Message from the Board of Directors

Social Workers & Friends, Welcome to the 2020 NASW-NJ Conference, virtually! We hope this message finds you and your families healthy and well. We are grateful for your commitment to showing up in this new space with us. We know this is much different than the environment we are all used to and collectively there is a sense of loss we share in not being able to come together physically, find respite and share meals as we have done in past conferences. While there is a sense of loss, we also hope you find this new space equally as full of inspiration and innovation. We certainly do. The central conference idea this year is innovation and inspiration, an underlying theme that resonates more now than we could have possibly imagined a year ago. This year’s conference embodies all that we had hoped to spark in the dialogues from presenters and keynotes—that social workers are forward thinking, rise to the challenges before us, and are innovators in treatment, technology and communities. You, arriving in this space, with an openness to learn virtually, engage online and do so despite a global pandemic illustrates how inspirational our profession is. Our collective hope for this event is that we learn from it and grow. We hope you will find support in these virtual spaces as we navigate these uncertain times and that the presentations resonate with you amidst the COVID-19 crisis. We hope this conference will leave you hopeful about the times ahead when we are able to come together again and strengthen your skills to meet the certain challenges ahead. We are online with you, and collectively, we are stronger together. In health, Nkechi Okoli, President Judyann McCarthy, First Vice President Jenny Conger, Second Vice President Pat Spencer, Secretary Frank Greenagel, Central Regional Representative Sierra Spriggs, Northeast Regional Representative Northwest Regional Representative, Paula Barber Southern Regional Representative, Dawn Konrady Graduate Student Representative, Megan O'Brien Undergraduate Student Representative, Thomas Cadmus

Friends & Colleagues: One of my favorite sayings throughout life has been “When you can’t change the direction of the wind, adjust your sails.” Never has that quote held more meaning for me than now and specifically for this conference. Just a short month ago we stood on the outside of what we thought might be a catastrophic occurrence and realized that in just a few short weeks our community would come together for our Annual Conference—an event that we all look forward to each year. While we did not know what was to come, we saw there was the potential for harm and made the difficult decision to move our Conference online. We asked you to stick with us and join us in this innovative space.

GETTING STARTED

Message from the Executive Director

And you rose to the challenge. On behalf of the Board and our team, thank you. The past several weeks have illustrated the absolute beauty of our profession and community. Despite a global pandemic, full of uncertainty and fear, you continue to show up for work, your clients, your families and children, and still find time to connect with us and volunteer your time and resources to strengthen your communities. You have risen to the call of our world and not lost sight of the future. For me, that is what the Conference this year represents—our collective commitment to the future through learning, growth and building new spaces to find meaningful connection. While we remain focused on addressing the immediate needs of our communities through telehealth and modified ways of outreach and service, we have not lost the understanding that at some point, we will come back together and our communities will undoubtedly have new needs. This conference is about talking through what we are currently experiencing and remaining true to our values—using this experience to make us stronger, more agile, and more prepared for the challenges of tomorrow. I hope you find as much inspiration in this event as I have. I am personally grateful for the Chapter leadership, speakers, volunteers, and staff who saw possibility in creating this virtual space for us and the tireless work that went into it. This space, this event, is a testament to our collective strength as a social work community in New Jersey. Thank you for adjusting your sails with us. In health and gratitude, Jennifer Thompson, MSW Executive Director

Dear 2020 NASW-NJ Virtual Conference Attendee: Welcome to our first-ever Virtual Conference! We are so glad that you are joining us in this new and exciting experience. Despite the pandemic, we knew it was vitally important for our community to gather for our annual “Meeting of the Profession.” Social Workers are on the frontlines of this crisis, supporting and advocating for those in need, and we are here to support and help you, by providing you a space to gain continuing education credits in fun and creative ways.

GETTING STARTED

Message from the Continuing Education Committee

Last Fall, when we started planning the 2020 NASW-NJ Conference, we decided to highlight the intersection of technology and Social Work. Little did we know that six months later technology would become an integral part of not only our professional lives, but it would also help create new ways we connect with our clients and communities. Our Monday keynote, The Importance of Social Work to Emerging Technologies, with Dr. Desmond Patton and Dr. Courtney Cogburn, highlights how—as our technological advances continue to push the boundaries of human possibility and understanding—we need to envision a crucial role for social workers in creating more humane and ethical technology. On Tuesday, Daphne Alroy-Thiberge, LCSW and Katie Tracy, LCSW will host a live group event around, Grief and Loss Intervention for Your Staff and Clients in the Era of Covid-19: An Integrative Approach. This keynote will provide an experiential, evidence-based trauma-informed intervention. It will be a much-needed discussion during these stressful times. At the conclusion of our first day of workshops, Margot Escott, LCSW, will show us how techniques from Improvisational Theatre can enable clients to try new behaviors in an accepting environment. Be prepared to learn and laugh while watching Humor and Healing/Improv Theatre Therapy for Wellness, on Sunday. Please remember to visit the virtual EXHIBIT HALL to network with companies offering important services and resources that may be useful in your everyday practice. Plus, each exhibit session will bring a chance to win prizes, including a free 2021 conference registration, a CEU package, an iPad and more! Thank you for joining us in this new online learning experience. We appreciate your willingness to embrace change as we forge ahead in this new normal. With Gratitude, Continuing Education Program Committee Dawn Apgar, PhD, LSW, ACSW. Chair. V. DuWayne Battle, PhD, MSW Katherine Findley, PhD, MSW Kecia Melvin, LCSW Widian Nicola, DSW, LCSW Donna Pincavage, LSW Gil Velasquez, LSW

ABOUT THE BOOK Whether it's due to fear about asking for help, feeling overwhelmed by which type of help to get, or simply a lack of awareness that their symptoms are danger signs, many people wait far too long to get support when problems crop up. Drawing on his twenty years of experience in behavioral healthcare and private practice, the author outlines the symptoms and behaviors of the most common mental-health issues people suffer from, as well as when and how to seek help. "Robert is a genuine expert in his field and is able to share his knowledge in this book in an easy-to-understand format. What is Live-in Care?

Live-in care is an arrangement whereby a caregiver stays with an elderly client 24 hours a day in the client’s home. The live-in caregiver helps the elderly client with activities of daily living (ADL) such as bathing, cooking, dressing, feeding, toileting, walking, laundry, light housekeeping, etc. Such a live-in care arrangement can last for any length of time. Periodically, relief caregivers may step in to allow the primary caregiver some time off.

Care-free living... with a live-in caregiver in your own home!

GET INVOLVED

SUPPORT US

VOLUNTEER WITH US! Are you ready to strengthen your connection to the profession of social work? Are you eager to connect with other members and social workers throughout the state? Do you want to develop your leadership experience while learning new skills? Great! We’re looking for individuals who are passionate and share a desire to contribute to our Chapter in a meaningful way. The NASW-NJ Chapter volunteer leadership is composed of social workers just like yourself, who are passionate about our field, our collective purpose, and have a desire to contribute to the dialogue and lend their talents and voices to the betterment of our Chapter. Here are a few ways you can volunteer with us: •

Volunteer in the office. We’re a small, lean-mean team and we are always looking for volunteers who can help us look at data, do research, think through new marketing materials, and attend outreach events. Have a specialty you think we could benefit from? Let’s talk. We’d love to help you find a space to share your talents.

Serve as a Unit Leader. NASW-NJ has 12 units across the state of New Jersey to provide members regionally based networking and educational opportunities. Each unit has a volunteer chair and co-chair to plan and coordinate events that bring value to our members. Units are a crucial way our Chapter engages and connects members! 2020-2021 Unit Leader Applications are now open!

Serve on a committee. These are one-year appointments and committees typically meet by phone or in person on a monthly basis. Committees are a great way to learn more about the internal workings of our professional organization and help shape programs and policies. You’ll be a leader in our organization. Sounds great, right? Connect with us to learn more about open committee appointments!

Serve on the Board of Directors. Lead and serve our organization at the highest level! Board positions are elected by member vote and serve one to two-year appointments. Our Board meets bi-monthly and is active in conversations, dialogue, and Chapter governance in-between meetings. We know you have great ideas and passion—we want you to be prepared to share that with us throughout your term!

Am I qualified to volunteer? You should be a social worker (but if you’re an associate member and want to run, we can talk with you about those qualifications as well!) and can practice in ANY setting. We know that social workers are in every aspect of our community and we hope our leadership is as diverse as our membership. You do need to be a member of NASW-NJ (of course!) and we certainly encourage you to be active in the Chapter in some capacity. Sound exciting? Ready to get started or continue your Chapter volunteer leadership journey? Contact us today about becoming a volunteer! You can email Annie Siegel, Membership and Education Coordinator at asiegel.naswnj@socialworkers.org or complete the form online.
