the project of „rethinking, refurbishment and re-usage of an turn of the century building into a street Kids residence“ came as a result of collaboration between Cuas (Carinthian university of applied sciences) and JuNo Klagenfurt (Jugendnotschlafstelle- homeless and runaway youth shelter). the main goal of the collaboration was to develop a project whose realization should provide an overall functional solution and structure that would support the challenging process of dealing with problems of the street Kids in Klagenfurt. the main concern of this project was dealing with an existing house within the plot of the future JuNo Center. minding the different groups of JuNo-users, the house is meant to be used by young adults as the most independent beneficiary group. What made this project important was an opportunity to make a social impact in the local community, which might be the crucial aspect of the architecture nowadays. project development took a place in few different stages that were influenced by the changing nature of the collaboration between the involved institutions and the owner of the property.
starting point was the need of putting the renovations expanses on minimum by organizing as many living units within the existing structure, in the most simple way. This included turning the roof floor into the living zone and optimizing usage of the shared spaces as well as the room heights. initial idea to provide more space with extension on south was transformed in to making wooden pavilion that is suppose to serve as meeting point between different venues in future Juno center. pavilion was supposed to be built by JUNO clients, and it has a significance in terms of social link between different groups of users.
possibility of realisation and very complex situation of an existing structure as well as a compounded background of its future users, make this project very sensible and down to earth. the absolutely most important part was to find a balance between different aspects and actors involved, and moreover to offer a solution that goes along with requirements, budget and laws as well as ideas and visions of the space.
