Dear Pet Parents, Thank you for reading the 2015/2016 Whole Earth Pets Directory. We received a lot of feedback for our 2014 Directory – our first attempt at providing a comprehensive pet parent resource for the Bakersfield area, and we’ve tried to incorporate that feedback to improve our listings and the usefulness of the information that we have compiled. Speaking of incorporating, this year we also incorporated as a non-profit company, our official new name is Whole Earth Pets Foundation, Inc. and we have received our 501(c)(3) 47-1116763 tax exemption. Our focus is on helping to keep pets with their families – whether there is

a behavior issue that needs to be addressed (barking, escaping the yard); or pet parents who are medically frail, chronically ill, isolated, and/or financially challenged and need assistance to care for their pets; or perhaps a pet is in need of spay/neuter or expensive medical treatment in a family that is already experiencing hardship – we hope we can bring the resources, education and support needed. Our business model is based on continuing to provide our paid pet care services, along with fundraising and applying for grants. And because we seek to make all our efforts count as much as possible for the betterment of our community – we have included aggressive recycling efforts to help raise funds as well as helping our neighborhoods. You can read more about these at our website www.wepfoundation.org. We hope that you find value in our Directory and welcome your feedback, suggestions and updates. If we missed your business or non-profit – please let us know so we can add you to the next directory. If you would like to distribute copies of the directory, let us know that, too. You can reach us at (661) 888-4241 ext. 105 or email info@bakwep.com . Sincerely, Natalia Corres Founder & President of Whole Earth Pets Foundation, Inc.

Where do animals picked up by City Animal Control Officers go? It is our first and foremost desire to reunite stray animals with their owners. Animals that are impounded by City Animal Control Officers are thoroughly checked for identification such as a license or microchip. If we can identify the owner of the animal, we will make every effort to return the animal. If we are unable to identify ownership, the animal will be taken to the City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center. Who does the City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center Serve? The Animal Care Center serves as a temporary home for stray and otherwise unwanted animals impounded by City Animal Control Officers or received from City residents. Since the Animal Care Center is funded by City taxpayers, residents who wish to surrender a stray animal or relinquish ownership of an animal will be required to show proof of City residency. Residents are encouraged to call the Animal Care Center during normal business hours to verify their residency and schedule an appropriate time for dropping off an animal. All citizens, regardless of where they reside, are welcome to adopt an animal from the City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center. Where is the City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center located? It is located at 201 South Mount Vernon Avenue.

WEP Foundation, Inc., Big Red's Buddies Program This is a community outreach program for Pet Parents who are medically vulnerable, chronically ill, frail and/or isolated by disease or age. We provide volunteer or sliding scale paid personalized in-home pet care services for those who, because of their physical or financial limitations, may need assistance in providing care for their pets. Examples of assistance we can provide are: * Dog Walks and pet play time; * Assistance with basic pet grooming-baths, brushing, flea control; * Maintaining a clean environment for the pets through poop patrol (solid waste pickup in the yard) and litter box cleaning/scooping; * Pet taxi to veterinary or grooming appointments or to visit a Pet Parent offsite (where possible); * Temporary foster care; * Grief support and assistance in the event of a pet passing away; * Assistance placing pet in a new forever home in accordance with the wishes of the Pet Parent; or if no family member wishes to take the pet after the Pet Parent has passed away. If you know someone who could benefit from a visit by Big Red's Buddies, contact Christina at 661-888-4241 ext 106, orChristina@bakwep.com

Big Red’s Buddies specializes in small victories…like Bella and Brandy. Their Mom was hospitalized due to a medical emergency, and their Mom’s roommate (and supposed doggy caregiver) moved out sometime during that time. When their Mom found out, she reached out and found us. We went immediately to see what was happening, and assess the situation. It was clear from the physical evidence that these babies had been alone for longer than a couple of days (as was her belief). We cleaned up the solid wastes, and fed and gave fresh water to the babies – but the biggest obstacle was not the mess or the malnutrition (they were both very skinny) – the biggest challenge was how terrified they were to have been left alone so long. It took several days for our assigned volunteer to build trust with them. They barked non-stop and hid under the bed, barely poking their heads out to get a look at her. She had some setbacks, and yet after a week – they are able to come out from hiding and actually go out into their yard. We all celebrated Bella and Brandy being able to see the sunlight and feel the ground and actually pee and poop in their own yard. It is the small victories that make this work so rewarding. Bella has been to visit her Mom in the rehab facility. Brandy is still working toward that. There is still much to do, as their Mom will have another surgery and probably won’t be home for Christmas. We’d like to help

get her home ready for her return, but we’ll need help. You see, her electricity has been turned off, as well. This is the life of older (and sometimes even younger folks) who have no family and limited income. One medical issue can cause a domino effect of devastating proportions. This scenario could have had so many tragic outcomes – the dogs might have starved; the neighbors might have alerted animal control – and since no one knew where the owner was, the animals would have gone to the shelter – where their survival chances would have been slim – fearful as they were. Our foundation focuses on helping to keep the pets happy, healthy and safe AND WITH THEIR PET PARENT. We do this in so many ways, and Big Red’s Buddies is our premier program focused on those who are medically frail, elderly, isolated or chronically ill and have limited options/resources. We help because we are able to, because you help us to make small victories possible. Thank you!

Love Buster Inc. (DBA) Buster's Pet Fund P.O. Box 80423 Bakersfield, CA 93380 busterspetfund@gmail.com busterspetfund.org Our organization was started to accomplish two main goals. The first and most important was to collect monetary donations to assist the rural Kern County shelters pay for medical, transportation, and spay/neuter costs for homeless animals. The rural shelters do not have the budget for these costs so the volunteers for these shelters pay for it out of their own pockets in order to save the animals from euthanasia. Most if not all out of town/state rescues require all vetting and spay/neuter to be done before they will even consider rescuing the dogs/cats. Donations can be made through our website busterspetfund.org or directly through PayPal using email: busterspetfund@gmail.com. The second goal was to make sure that every homeless shelter animal had comfort during the summer months and warmth during the winter months. We collect comfort items for both dogs and cats. These items include blankets, towels, beds (all sizes), toys, crates (both wire and plastic), food and water bowls, leashes, collars, harnesses, flea & tick drops/spray, food (canned & dry), etc. Every year we have a blanket drive before winter so “Remember to say you saw it in the Whole Earth Pets Foundation, Inc. these items can be distributed amongst all Kern County shelters in need. These items can also be donated throughout the year at either of our two donation bin locations: Petco (Gosford Rd) and Fur & Feathers (Allen Rd). Thank you so much for this opportunity! What is Dog Rescue? By Jackie Cameron For those not involved personally it is seen as an organization or group of people that saves dogs. When you work in dog rescue you quickly realize it is much more. Dogs, our life-companions, too often become discarded members of society. Over 135,000 years ago we built a bond with the wild wolf. Since that moment in time we have taken on the responsibility to care for and protect these creatures.
49
When a member of society neglects their responsibility to care for their animal, by either not maintaining their health, not providing a safe place to live, abusing an animal that trusts them wholeheartedly, or fails to redeem their animal from a shelter, a rescue group steps in. We at Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue focus our efforts on saving dogs from euthanasia. Most of our rescues have behavioral issues resulting from their impoundment that must be addressed prior to finding them a forever home. Foster families take in our rescue dogs and give them temporary homes, treat them as members of their family and show them the love that was denied to them before coming into our care. With our fosters, these dogs learn how to love, trust and live life without fear of pain or abandonment. Sometimes dogs come into our rescue after a traumatic injury and require special attention from our loving foster families, our associates at local vet hospitals, or our trainers. At Marley's Mutts, we emphasize education and youth involvement, viewing our presence in the community as a "preventative measure" to insure that our younger generation coming up understands the importance of animal welfare. Marley’s "Miracle Mutts" crew consists of dogs that are being trained for therapy work. We attend youth meetings, speak to kids of all ages and ability levels in classrooms across Kern County. We are involved in a wonderful reading program called Barks and Books, where local children join us to practice their reading skills and comprehension by reading aloud to dogs. Children are “Remember to say you saw it in the Whole Earth Pets Foundation, Inc. Directory.”

easily intimidated by the prospect of reading to an adult but open up when asked to read to a dog. Dogs cannot read and dogs do not judge, which makes them ideal partners for children struggling to read. We have found that by not actively correcting the reading of these children that they are more willing to ask for help when they come across a word that troubles them. Over time we see a progression in their reading abilities which not only is beneficial to the child’s literacy but also teaches the children that dogs can serve a purpose outside of companionship. Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue has also taken on the task of reducing pet overpopulation in Kern County. We have developed an extensive spay and neuter program that targets low income areas of Kern County with free and low cost sterilization. We feel that by offering spay and neuter services that are obtainable to all in the community, we can help reduce the number of animals born each year and furthermore the amount set to be euthanized in our shelter system. The Mutt Mission spay and neuter program is funded by donations, as are all of our programs and rescue efforts. If you would like to assist us in reaching our goals of rescuing and educating, please donate by going to www.marleysmutts.org

Facilitating Animal Rescue We are a small group of volunteers who strive to help with the “missing link” in the rescue effort. On an as-we-can basis, we offer transportation, temporary foster and support with supplies to small, rural shelters in California for the most part in the Central Valley & Kern County. We do not currently have a facility or authorize adoptions of animals – our current goal is to support qualified and reputable rescues & help get the animals to the rescues we work with through providing temporary foster and transportation (typically to the SF Bay Area). Mission Statement: to organize and support a network of individuals/groups that facilitate the rescue of animals otherwise at risk or slated for euthanasia and slaughter. Our goals are: * To help provide medical care, transportation and emergency foster;
53
* To place animals in loving permanent "forever" homes; * To provide appropriate animals to facilities/organizations that incorporate animals as therapeutic partners; and * To educate and support the community through outreach, intervention and service programs. * To promote a society free of euthanasia as an option for overcrowding We are always in need of monetary donations to sponsor emergency boarding, vet bills (for animals that have no owner and no one to take financial responsibility and have a good prognosis for a great life) and/or life-saving transportation for getting shelter animals to safety. Other items include: transportation crates (used but in working condition), volunteer transporters, volunteer networkers (email/Facebook), towels, pet food, medications etc. www.underdogz.org Contact through our website or email: donate2underdogz@gmail.com We are a 501(c)(3) designated public charity and thus, any contributions made are tax-deductible. Our Non-Profit ID # is 46-0791807. Announcements for transports & current needs are listed on Facebook page – please find updates there!
