THREATS (T) // Delta areas stay unexplored, unexploited and inaccessible

THE DELTAS // a natural treasure at the edge of town Protected Areas by Natura 2000 and Ramsar Convention rice fields, grasslands , salty marshes and swamps ideal habitat for many species of wild animals and plants.

PROJECT AREA

The birds … More than 270 bird species find shelter in the wetland, many of them rare and threatened the riparian forest of Axios hosts one of the most important mixed heron colonies in Greece one of the basic migratory routes of Europe, so thousands of birds stop over for some days in order to rest and feed up, before continuing their journey. The animals valuable habitat for many other animal species, some of which are under threat of extinction. In the fields and in the islets of the Axios river lives a herd of wild horses, descendants of the animals once used by the farmers for agricultural work. In the Gallikos estuaries one can see an impressive stock of water buffalos, that enjoy spending most of their time in the water. The plants In total there are more than 500 species and subspecies of plants, some of which change colors during the year, producing a diverse scenery.

CANOE GAMES

People’s participation

MANAGEMENT & ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT Attract visitors in the area and promote further and repetitive visits in order to assure a continuous flow of people with environmental sensibilities and interests

Prolong the visit but also encourage future visits as well

Active involvement and participation

Sense of ownership and responsibility, a sense of familiarity

Well-managed and maintained green spaces enhance cultural life, local festivals and theatrical performances. (T. Baycan-Levent and P. Nijkamp, 2009)

People are being involved throughout the whole process

“If people feel themselves more involved with their environment, and experience that positive change is possible, then authorities can build up a better relation with them which continues beyond the mere taking of a decision or completion of a plan (A. Van Herzele, K. Collins, V. Heyens, 2005, p.11)

Discussion

Would the human presence disturb the animals’ life? Should we then leave the area an unexploited land, insecure and polluted?

Will attractiveness to the area eliminate fears? Giving a value and attention to the area would alter the negative perceptions about the place and nature.

We should balance the benefits obtained compared to conflicts possibly raised.

Conclusion The quality of the area will be raised People will take into more consideration of the environment and raise the attention of the local authorities.

Increase today’s low percentage in green spaces

Pollution will be reconsidered

Friendlier means of access

Today’s disposal of trash and other materials will be prosecuted and, hopefully, stopped

ENVIRONMENT

ACCESSIBILITY

SAFETY

Continuous flow of people or locals, that will raise the level of safety

Health benefits obtained, reflected to the city and the citizens

HEALTH

ECONOMY

Local economy and products will be supported
