Two Bays is back for 2020

Spend time this Summer (Late Jan-Feb-March 2020) on Port Phillip (Nairm) and Western Port (Mar-ran biik) Bays aboard Pelican1, a 19 metre sailing catamaran. Join stimulating discussions exploring our connections with local marine environments and discover opportunities for building relationships between coastal communities and the Bays’ underwater ecology, whilst visiting and researching marine protected areas and other bay features. Since its inception in 2006, the Two Bays project has undertaken annual sailing programs around Victoria’s largest embayments Port Philip and Western Port annually. Two Bays provides an exciting opportunity for building partnerships between marine managers, key stakeholders including Traditional Owners, schools, researchers and coastal communities, while promoting greater understanding and action for protecting the broad range of natural, cultural, recreational and economic values of the bays and the Oceans. The program is built around participating in ongoing health checks for both Bays including water quality, marine pests and micro plastics (marine debris), with a focus on citizen science. This year we will be listening to Sea Country with hydrophones and sharing an acoustic walk along Geelong’s foreshore The design of Pelican1 is inspired by the Pacific Islander migratory double canoe and incorporates the best of both ancient and modern catamaran design. She is a fast, safe and efficient vessel - suitable for sea projects involving marine research, Ocean Literacy education, monitoring and film making. Pelican1 provides a perfect space for ocean dialogues, sea classrooms and for purely experiencing the beauty of Sea Country.
