nota della capodirettrice As they say in Game of Thrones ‘Winter is Coming’...you’ve heard it to death by now. However, when that brisk breeze starts to swirl the crisp, fragile leaves of autumn around the piazzas, we know that our adored Italian summer has come to pass. It’s that time of year we yearn to hold warm, rich drinks, sit in front of deleciously cozy fires, and wrap ourselves in sumptuous, seductive knits or (faux) furs. I don’t necessarily mean seductive in a tight-sexy-ribbed-turtleneck-kind-ofway but more in the way you feel in your fall and winter layers. You should feel good in them and it will show, I promise you. Seduction and femininity go hand in hand, notably in this season. In this issue, I am especially excited to say we showcase many kinds of seduction. From the smart brain of our woman of the month, or country’s bonafide bombshell celebrating her 80th (!) birthday, to our editorial shoot mixing the sleek hardness of a vintage Alpha Romeo with the provocative pairing of knits and lingerie, and many things in between. Just because the mercury goes down doesn’t mean the magic has to.

DEVE AVERE

The foundation pieces every woman needs have been refreshed and revamped for Fall. These are your wardrobe classics 2.0 by Sarah Scheurich

THE MASTERPIECE Updated bomber jacket

The ultimate luxurious take on athletic wear, this Marni mink fur jacket reinterprets the bomber jacket in a luscious coffee-toned mink. Although it evokes a sporty silhouette with its varsity stripe collar and cuffs, the jacket’s opulent roots are undeniable. Keep it zipped up and pair it with a pencil skirt for an effortlessly chic look.

THE STATEMENT PIECE Cinched Waist Belt

Feminine silhouettes were created on the catwalks by the use of wide waistbelts to accentuate an hourglass figure. These extra-wide belts looked particularly new when worn over oversized outerwear, pulling the waist in to create a more formal look. Olivier Rousteing infuses a glamorous safarichic into his latest fall collection. It’s set with rows of gold beads and has glossy patent-leather trims. Fasten it over a plain top to make a statement.

THE 24/7 SHOE Biker Ankle Boots

When Hedi Slimane sent elaborately embellished military boots down the Saint Laurent runway, he helped unleash a ’90s grunge revival. This pair is made from cool croc-effect leather and they only get better with wear. This luxe boot has a slight heel, waxed laces and a buckle-fastening cuff. Whether worn to toughen up black jeans or ground a matching set, each striking pair adds a subversive kick to every stride.

HOW TO WEAR IT

THE NEW SILHOUETTE Elongated Proportions

High necks and floor-grazing hems create slim column silhouettes, while floor-sweeping maxi dresses add a sense of romantic drama to the fall season that evokes show-stopping elegance. Everything in XL sizes; chunky cable sweaters paired with a pair of baggy trousers; ribbed-knit separates worn head to toe. Coats should hit the floor: see Haider Ackermann for a modern spin on longer lengths. Sound toasty? Yes, it will be. But it’s also an ultra-stylish approach to layering up this time of year.

CARATTERISTICA STILISTA

Marni Consuelo Castiglioni, designer of Marni, took all the ways that we might cocoon ourselves from the outside world—from the quilts on our beds to the neoprene worn while engaging in extreme sports—and turned them into a strong collection. This was one of those more radical, experimental Marni moments that brought together all sorts of oppositional forces—the elegant versus the utilitarian, the natural versus the synthetic, the arts and crafts versus the industrial. Our highlights include the wool-blend vest, the playful use of shearling and the fresh approach to layering – a top trend this season.

29

THE SEASONS HOT COLOR Oxblood

Designers went to a deep, dark, and sexy place on the runways for fall. Moving into rich winter darks, saturated oxblood tones replace last year’s berry reds. These dark-red tones continue to have success and would be an ideal shade for Holiday and Christmas deliveries. This season, designers are using a wide range of materials for textural variations including fur, pony hair and polished leathers. Oxblood is kind of “the new black” and it looks amazing on all skin tones and complexions. WORK THESE INTO YOUR CLOSET

THE FOREVER PIECE Leather Blazer

Tailored blazers emerge as the must-have cover-up when worn with printed trousers or over floor-sweeping skirts and dresses, taking each look from day to night. For a slice of instant attitude, there’s no stronger or more enduring piece than the Saint Laurent lambskin blazer, served in classic black. Layer this over denim for the day, or slip it on over a sheer blouse and fluid pants for evening sex appeal.

30

THE ARM CANDY The Bucket Bag

If ever there was a moment for the bucket bag, it is now. Equal parts form and function, the bucket bag is an absolute essential for any woman who spends her days on the go. For one, it expands for all of your schlepping needs and then conveniently cinches at the top. Luxury materials including snakeskin and crocodile elevated this simple drawstring style. Both modified tote and bucket styles were seen with medium and longer straps this fall. Skilled artisans in Colombia have handcrafted Nancy Gonzalez’s crocodile bucket bag. Classic in design, this enduring style has a tasseled drawstring top and a spacious suede interior with organizational pockets. Carry it on your shoulder with the detachable strap, or hold it in hand by the top handle. And when it comes to styling, bucket bags will pretty much go with any ensemble, but we suggest pairing it with a skirt and blazer for a more relaxed look.

THE FINAL TOUCH Transparent Frames

Retro Sunglasses get updated with an upscale feel. Yes, I am talking about clear frames. Transparent sunnies are comfortable and thanks to a sturdy, plastic body- they look stylish and trendy.

80 Candele Auguri la Sophia!

35

The woman being described is obviously none other than Sophia Loren, who just blew out her birthday candles on September 20th. Loren has graced the pages of magazines, television and film screens, and more for over half a century, and has looked stunning all throughout.

port Sophia and their other daughter, Maria, 4 years Sophia’s junior, by herself. The trio chose to live with Sophia’s grandmother in Pozzouli. Loren was raised in near poverty, but the family held themselves together during World War II by opening a bar in their home in Naples.

Being a household name for so long, its hard to imagine someone as exemplary as Loren ever having a ‘beginning’ to her illustrious career. Born in Rome, Italy in 1934 to parents Romilda Villani and Riccardo Scicolone. Her father, Sci colone, refused to marry Villani, leaving her to sup-

Painfully thin due to their lack of income, Sophia garnered the nickname ‘little stick’ among her schoolmates. That is, until age 14, when, suddenly, her nickname was forced into retirement as she developed the confidently curvy figure she is now famous for. On a whim, Sophia entered a beauty pageant and placed

36

as a finalist. It was 1950, and while this was the first time her beauty was recognized publicly, it was only the beginning of her career. The next year, Sophia began acting. Chosen to be an extra in Quo Vadis, directed by Mervyn LeRoy. Her career took off in the next decade, developing the stage name Loren in 1952, where she was first credited as Sophia Loren in the film La Favorita. However, it was not until 1953 that she claimed her first lead role in the hit Aida. Starring in a slew of films over the next few years along side the likes of John Wayne, Cary Grant, and Frank Sinatra, Loren was becoming a household name in Europe, and soon, the United States. Following her string of film after star-studded film, Loren signed a contract with Paramount, where she fought to star as the mother, not the daughter, in the film Two Women. The film was about a mother and daughters struggles during World War II. Her fight paid off, as did her incredible acting, and she won Academy Award for Best Actress in 1961.

“

I never, ever thought I had a chance to even be in the top five. There had never been an actress in a foreign-language film to win an Oscar. It was too impossible to believe.

RAGAZZE CORRONO L’UNIVERSO From Bolshoi ballerina dreams to Nobel Prize hopeful, physicist Fabiola Gianotti has come a long way from Italy to be the head of CERN research lab in Geneva. Written by Kate Walker 52

A Milanese physicist by the name of Fabiola Gianotti was recently named head of CERN particle physics lab based in Geneva, Switzerland. Gianotti who had joined the lab in 1987 was a project leader of the Atlas collaborations that found the Higgs boson particle, a particle, which scientists had been searching for over 40 years. But why is this particle so important, you may ask. Fabiola Gianotti explains,” Because it’s a crucial particle, which” provides mass “to other particles. If it did not exist, the universe would not exist or would be much different than it is. Before her discovery, there were sixteen known elementary particles, among them the quarks and electrons, which make up ordinary

Prize rumors swirling around her and understandably so. Not only is she an incredibly accomplished physicist, she also helps to empower the younger generation. When asked how many girls write to her, Gianotti said, “Very many, and from many countries: Italy, Singapore, Brazil, United States. They ask me for advice, suggestions, speak to me of their dreams. Maybe not right away, but I try to reply to everyone. I consider it a duty. “ Women lifting up women, that’s the way the world should be. However, she did not always dream of becoming a physicist. “As a child I dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer, but not just any: I wanted to become a star in the

She also had studied piano in the Conservatory in Milan. “In recent years I have played a little ‘less, but the music takes me in every moment of life. If you are tired, the English Suites of Bach’s restored my charge. “ Another one of her passions is cooking. Gianotti is Sicilian and one of her specialty dishes, she often makes for her colleagues in Geneva is swordfish and pasta with sardines. But she says, “But I avoid the spaghetti because I cannot see my foreign friends to eat with a spoon. “ When asked if Gianotti misses Italy, she says that, “For those who live in an nternational environment as CERN is very important to maintain their cul-

matter, and the photon, responsible for transmitting the electromagnetic force. The Higgs boson is neither a matter particle or a particle that transmits a force is a particle that gives mass. “ Now you might be a bit confused because this is all very complicated but, essentially, Gianotti is the real deal. There are even Nobel Peace

Bolshoi.” Her parents are very proud of the goals she has achieved. “Of course. My mother is indeed a very inventive woman and always encouraged me a lot, making me do different activities from an early age. “ She is delightfully aware that, although science and her work are very important to her, she has to “keep an open mind and also have other interests. “

ture and attachment to their roots.” I speak for our country when I say we are very fortunate to have such an intelligent, powerful Italian woman as a model for the rest of us. It reminds us that the universe is truly at our fingertips. *Interview quotes from Vanity Fair Italia *Quotes from Vanity Fair Italia

This evening’s ruling should bring to an end a painful tax investigation that has dogged the designers since 2008, and ensuing court cases that have dragged on for three years.

INNOCENTI Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana and a group of senior executives at the designers’ company have been cleared of tax evasion. Written by Kristin Terrana 56

Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana and a group of senior executives at the designers’ company have been cleared of tax evasion. The innocent verdict from a five-judge panel at Milan’s Corte suprema di Cassazione in Rome overturned the findings of a Milanese court that previously found the designers guilty and sentenced them to 20 months each in prison. The designers have always insisted their absolute innocence, and last year closed their Milan boutiques, bar and restaurant - yet continued to pay the 250 employees at those ventures - in protest after a City council official said:

“Their fashion is seen as excellent the world over, but we do not need tax evaders to promote us.” The investigation has been extremely upsetting to Dolce and Gabbana, whose fortunes are built on slickly designed clothes steeped in the glamourous iconography of their home country. When the charges against them were first revealed in 2011 Stefano Gabbana tweeted that the tax authorities were “thieves” and said it would be “better to leave” Italy - and then hastily deleted the messages. Since the last recession and ensuing eurozone crisis the Italian taxation authorities have targeted

many of the nation’s most successful fashion houses in an attempt to put a dent into a national debt currently reckoned to top €2 trillion. Gossip in Milan holds that several other famous Italian fashion labels have paid hundreds of millions of Euros over the last few years to avoid public investigation. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, though, always insisted that they have done nothing illegal - a stance that has today been vindicated in Rome’s Supreme Court. We are please to see the magic of Domenico and Stefano will continue to be shown on the runway season after season.

Simon Boccanegra Giuseppe Verdi Teatro alla Scala From 31 October to 19 November 2014 Plácido Domingo’s Simon Boccanegra has arrived at Teatro Alla Scala in Milan. After debuting as the Doge in Berlin in 2009 and at the Met in New York earlier this year, the Spanish singer is currently singing the title role of Verdi’s opera in a series of performances in Milan. The Domingo-Boccanegra ‘tour’ will continue this summer first in London (ROH) and then in Madrid (Teatro Real). The performances at La Scala, where Simon Boccanegra’s thoroughly revised second version had its premiere in 1881, were awaited with impatience. The highly demanding Italian audience was eager to judge the Spanish tenor tackling one of Verdi’s most beautiful baritone roles. The series of six performances (the opening night was on 16 April) was also Domingo’s comeback on stage following a colon cancer surgery which he underwent less than two months ago. 62

PRENDENDO IN PRESTITO IL MIGLIORE by Kristin Terrana Imagine

the rush of seeing the perfect garment walking down the runway. The light hits the catwalk and the fabric is immaculate. You imagine it on yourself, on a friend, in your next editorial, on the red carpet. It is exactly what you wanted from this designer. It exceeds everyone’s expectations for the season. However, did you even begin to think about where it came from? You know the fabric was chosen 70

for a reason, mockups were probably made to fit it on the model. But really, where did it come from? The idea of an Italian luxury brand has long been coveted as the richest of the rich. From Prada to Pucci, fashionistas look to Milan fashion week because they know exactly what they are getting. Rich textiles, fine details, and the newest trends that have never been attempted before. But what if you found out that about fourty percent of that beau-

tiful, perfect garment, was in fact made in China? Would you care? Would it devalue the piece? Not to Miuccia Prada, who is fine with sending around 40% of the brand’s production offshore to China. Offshoring Now, turn that around. Think of a hip, edgy Chinese designer. Where do they go for their outsourced materials? What makes their garments the top of the top? Why, Italian textiles of course.

Offshoring has been around for nearly as long as retail therapy has. Countries have outsourced certain factors of production for decades, as it is an easy and inexpensive way to create portions of the product that may be difficult to make in-house. However, the controversy around offshoring is as large as its benefits. Ethical issues raise debate over whether offshoring is safe very often. In 2012, there was a major fire in Bangladesh at a sweatshop that killed over 100 workers. It was not the first time and it may not be the last. Negative aspects aside, most fashion companies thrive on the money they save by offshoring, despite the threat of a negative impact it may have on their image. But, what if offshoring could improve a fashion houses image? That’s exactly what Chinese fashion designer Uma Wang is now using a 60% Made-In-Italy production model, paired with 40% Chinese production in order to add quality, luxury and legitimacy to her brand.

An extra thirty percent can be added to the price of an item if it is produced in China, so for Wang, production in Italy is a no brainer. While saving money, Uma also benefits from Italian’s vast amount of textiles, especially their hi tech fabrics, something she states that China is not up to par with yet.

But for the fabric it is 100 percent from Italy.

” Another Chinese designer has taken it a step further and purchased Krizia, an Italian fashion house. The designer, Zhu Chongyun, does not want fans of the brand to think this will add an ‘asian culture’ to the house. By acquiring the Italian brand, Chongyun is furthering her legitimacy in the industry by managing a house generally thought of as luxe. It is not only the Chinese that are moving to Italy. Formerly Canadi-

an brand Ports 1961 has moved their brand to Milan as well. A subsidiary of Hong Kong’s Ports Design Ltd, Ports 1961 plans for immense growth now that they have evolved into the European lifestyle. The move began two years ago and has seen a steady incline ever since. In reality, it makes perfect sense that Chinese designers look to Italy for quality. The international exchange of art, textiles and production has been going on for centuries, normally with other countries looking to China. Now, with Italy being the textile king, it only seems right to have other countries take the high tech and luxury Italian fabrics for use in their designs.
