Phase 2:

Staging // Reealisation

Scarborough is a resort town on England’s North Sea coast. Its 2 bays with sandy beaches are split by a headland bearing the 12th-century Scarborough Castle. The Victorian Central Tramway funicular train links the town centre with South Bay and its harbour. The Rotunda Museum explores local coastal geology. Scarborough SEA LIFE Sanctuary’s marine displays and the Peasholm Park Japanese gardens are behind North Bay. Scarborough has many historical features about it but the most intriguing part of Scarborough that I discovered is the vast amount of open green parks that are spread across the town. From the St Nicholas Garden to Peasholm Park, Scarborough seems to be in one in nature and the fact that they have managed to roeserve and continue to look after their natural habitat means that nature plays a key role in the town’s image in terms of envrionmental concern.

My chosen programme has been derived through after undergoing the processes of fabrication of biomaterials. Fabrication and biodegradability relates to the biology of life: the change from young to old and how that relates to the ageing of people. This idea of the natural processes of ageing forms the basis of a programme that focuses on the slowing down of the ageing process within elderly people. In the current times, more and more elderly people are being diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s due to the man-made factors of earlier life. Ageing can be influenced by many factors, both psychological and physical, natural and man-made. Life is seen as process of biology and by slowing this process down, especially for the elderly, it enables them to live in the moment and allow them to experience the current times as a means of understanding the natural and man-made world.

My primary objective is to take a step back and reflect on our lives through a Journey Back Time - recollecting the memories from the past. I am proposing to create a building that reconnect the elderly (especially those with dementia) with the experience of place, memory and time through re-creation of past activities that they used to do through the design of a sensual and emotive environment that encourages memory regain. This will be in a form of a building that will provide art therapy sessions through assisted weaving, yarn and line making, basket making which will result in beautiful mistakes in weaving and the imperfections that make the fabric interesting

The project specifies include: -Create a cultural insitution that both supports spatial and economic redevelopment of Scarborough through the integration of a culture led generation. -Reimagining the town through the inclusion of an arts therapy centre that allows for the public to intergrate with the elderly through very hands on activities. - Particular spaces for various types of people join in shared interestes and create a link between making and socialising to build social connections. The target audience for this building will include the following: -The elderly (those with dementia, retired) -Young children (wanting to learn how to make woven kites with the elderly) - The community (both young and adult) - Health workers (art therapists, nurses) - Manufacturers (production of yarn/linen, baskets for fishing)

Since the building will be mainly for the elderly, the location and context of the proposed arts therapy building has to be suitable in terms of access for the limited mobility of the elderly. The site allows for access to bus stops right opposite the major road. Extension of this bus stop will be incorporated into the proposed building as it will allow not just buses but also van and car drop of points for the elderly who are coming from the care homes from surrounding areas. A shop will also be incorporated within the building due to mobility issues of the elderly. The Futurist is a great example of shops being located at the entrance, ensuring that the users are able to collect any products from the shops before entering the arts buidling for their activity.

In terms of the demographics within Scarborough, I examined the age groups within the town and whether a art therapy building for the elderly with dementia will be suitable. As a result, the graph shows that the majority of the demographic of Scarborough are age between 45-59 . Because of this, my proposal would be benefitial for this town and the inclusion of programmes that I will incorporate within the building will benefit this age group particularly however, everyone witin the town will still benefit too.

The proposed building will enable the link between making and socialising: the horticulture as well as the weaving, knitting and yarn spinning. This will enable shared interests between the users, creating knit and natter groups that are a mixture between the young, middle aged and the old. Elderly people are defined by loneliness and so members of the local community will be able to realte to the elderly through relevant activities such as the weaving.

“ Imagination is always the fabric of social life and the dynamic of history. The influence of real needs and compulsions, of real

interests and materials, is indirect because the crowd is never conscious of it.

Realisation At this stage of the project, establishing the form and shape is derived from further material testing. By undertaking some of the processes that will be occuring in the building (basket making), this can inform the form of the building, creating a link between designing and making.

Experimentation with massing through collaging the material testing to see whether the building can be composed of a woven shell. This material process informed the form of the new building as it allows for a ‘woven’ structure to be created based on the process of manipulation of the flax plant through weaving.

By experimenting with willow to replicate the structures that were created by weaving flax, this allows for a form to be created that has been informed by materiality. The flax weaving managed to test out that a natural material can be manipulated, which is what happens when weaving with willow as it has to be soaked into water for it to be woven into shape.

Using skills of making. this shape was created from the inspiration of the willow woven basket as well as the woven shell made by the flax weaving. By creating this moments of interaction, the design will incorporate spaces that will connect the age groups within Scarborough, allowing each demographic to understand and know about the other.

At this stage of the project, eunsuring that the correct dimensions have been alocated for each space within a building. Byt undergoing more material tests, this allowed for form to take shape from the processesssof making.. More material tests conducted but instead of using flax, willow was used. By weaving with willow, futher unerstanding of the process of basket making and theoutcmes of the project..
