EDGE 1. Design Problem: The way people are choosing to work is changing. In 2014 33% of the US workforce was considered independent, and that number is expected to increase to 40% by 2020. These freelancers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses need a place to work, connect, and grow their enterprise. 2. Project Goal: To design a workspace that attracts contingent workers, that provides cutting EDGE technology, adaptable work and meeting spaces, and fosters a sense of community striving to be on the verge of the next big thing. 3. Concept: NEXT is a forward-thinking, progressive coworking organization at the forefront of the shift in how people choose to work today. The concept for NEXT is EDGE- “a quality or factor that gives superiority over competitors” or “the point or state immediately before something momentous occurs”. In this sense, EDGE is an extension of the philosophy of NEXT. Just as an EDGE is “the line along which two surfaces of a solid meet”, the first level is the “line” along which the community and “Nexters” can meet. It houses the Reception Area, Ideation Zone, Forum Space, and Studio. Remaining spaces are located on the second level. The workcafe is situated on the periphery of the north-west vicinity, adjacent to the patio. The transparency of the glass and the proximity to the patio allows the space and function of the workcafe to spill over the boundary of the window wall to the exterior. The offices and workspaces are encompassed with clearly defined circulation paths lining the perimeter window walls. Duplicate like-spaces (such as private offices and project rooms) will be placed edge to edge within the border of the circulation path. A modern aesthetic will be applied to the space to reflect the forward-thinking nature of NEXT. Intense contrasting black and white walls provide a visually stimulating backdrop. The idea of EDGE will also be reflected in clean lines and geometric patterns, as well as in playful details like carpet tiles spilling out from under partitions to the adjacent circulation path beyond.

NEXT is a forward-thinking coworking organization pioneering the changes in today’s US workforce. The concept for NEXT is EDGE. EDGE can be a competitive advantage or the point immediately preceding a significant occurrence, so in this sense, EDGE is an extension of the philosophy of NEXT. Just as an EDGE is the line formed where two surfaces coincide, the first level is the “line” along which the community and “Nexters” converge. It houses the Reception Area, Ideation Zone, Forum Space, Studio, and a Project Room. Remaining spaces are located on the second level. Situated on the periphery of the north-west vicinity, adjacent to the patio, is the Workcafe. The transparency of the glass and the proximity to the patio allows the space and function of the Workcafe to spill over the boundary of the window wall to the exterior. The Private Enclaves edge-in the patio, with two on each side of the interior corners. The offices and workspaces are encompassed with clearly defined circu-
