WINTER SPANI SH MARKET

MARKET GUIDE 2017

T

he Spanish Colonial Arts Society is delighted to bring Winter Spanish Market back for its fifth year in Albuquerque, and its 29th year overall. In addition, we are so pleased that we are partnering this year with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. We are encouraged to see so much support from artists, partners and sponsors, as well as from the public. Our goal is to preserve and promote the Hispanic art forms that continue to change the Americas – and markets such as this do indeed help many New Mexico artists to make a living each year, thus preserving the tradition. Since the 1600s, Spanish Colonial arts have been a highly important part of life in New Mexico and Southern Colorado. However, by the early 1900s, the practice of these traditional arts was gradually declining. In 1925, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society was founded in Santa Fe to encourage and promote Spanish Colonial arts and to inform and educate the public about traditional art forms, designs and techniques. It is a notable success story, and some art forms that you will see at Market this year – notably, straw appliqué and encrusted straw work, colcha embroidery and tinwork – really were saved by the timely intervention of the Society. Incidentally, another notable “save” was the Santuario de Chimayó, which our founders purchased in 1929 when it was endangered, prior to donating it to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. In 1926, the Society held a small exhibition and sale in the courtyard at the Museum of Fine Arts in downtown Santa Fe, during Fiesta weekend. This later developed into our annual Summer Market, which is held in the historic Santa Fe Plaza. Since the 1920s, the Spanish Colonial Arts Society has played a major role in developing markets for the artists, increasing public awareness, preserving Spanish Colonial art, and emphasizing the importance of continuing community traditions. Winter Market was first held in Santa Fe in 1989, so this is its 29th year. Then, in 2002, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe was opened, so there is now also a museum dedicated to these historic traditions. We added another market in 2015, in Las Cruces, so we now cover the whole of the state from north to south. We hope that you enjoy Winter Spanish Market and, if you do, that you go home with a piece of the artistic history of New Mexico. Our artists represent a tradition that is unique in the entire world. Pieces are made the same way they were three hundred years ago, and use the same local materials, so they are very different from mass produced tourist pieces in terms of quality and the time and effort used to create them. Finally, remember, each artist is a small business owner who relies on our markets to feed their families, and the artists keep one hundred percent of all sales. So, BUY LOCAL and help to preserve a tradition that is integral to the New Mexico economy and brand. Finally, we owe a great debt of gratitude to our partners here at the NHCC. Thanks are also due to our major sponsors: the County of Bernalillo, the City of Albuquerque, the Hispanic Heritage Committee, Hutton Broadcasting/SantaFe.com, KUNM 89.9, KRQE 13, KSWV 810, KANW 89.1 and New Mexico Arts.

Hunter Lawson Retablo Artist

Las Tallas de Sotos My name is Hunter Lawson. I am an 11-year old boy that will be entering the 6th grade in August 2017. I have my own company called “Las Tallas de Sotos”, which means “The Carvings of Thickets”. This year (2017) was my first in participating in the historic Spanish Youth Market and I was excited and honored to be able to display my retablo creations. I started learning the art of creating retablos during the beginning of July, which was only 3 ½ weeks before Market. Thanks to my mentor, Santera Arlene Cisneros Sena, I was able to learn a lot in that short time. I am very proud of my Spanish heritage and am very thankful for the opportunity to learn from my mentor. She is tough, and she expects a lot out of me, but she is also kind and is teaching me to believe in myself. I enjoy expressing myself through the art of creating retablos. I feel like it helps me get closer to God, and it allows me to fill my soul with His message. Plus, I am able to learn more about my culture and the ways of my ancestors. When I create retablos I like to work outside. It’s my favorite place to be, in fact. Being outside Santiago by Hunter Lawson means that I am surrounded by the beautiful world that God made, and I try to transfer that beauty, the best that I can, into my artwork. Each time I start a new piece I am able to share this message with everyone - that God is inside all of us and he loves each of us so much. I have a younger brother and sister and I also have two dogs. I enjoy playing baseball, golf, and creating furniture with my dad in my spare time. I’m looking forward to what the future holds as I continue to learn more about creating this historic art form. Visit Hunter Lawson at Booth Y3 to sign your 2017 Winter Spanish Market Poster.

NOTES

Saints are the ultimate time travelers as they exist both in the past and present. Time Travelers explores the enduring imagery of Christian saints created by New Mexico artists. By pairing historical and contemporary pieces, the exhibition looks at how the portrayal of a saint compares throughout time.
