Chicago Housing Project
Main Question? How to design a Public Housing Project in Chicago that
adds to the neighborhood, creates a sense of community, and promotes a healthy lifestyle, while also incorporating sustainable design?
Screen Project- Prior to beginning the housing
project, our class undertook the task of designing permeable screens with tessellating patterns. Intrigued by its aesthetic and functional potential, I translated my design into the operable screen facade and railing system of my building.
Chicago
2.
1. Typical Schemes use double loaded corridors, this
approach denies residents adequate day lighting, allows for no natural cross ventilation, and creates no sense of community.
2. By pushing the units apart, a protected courtyard is made, and all units enjoy both direct and indirect sunlight and natural cross ventilation.
3. An addition of an extra bay creates a second
courtyard for neighborhood use, and using a tessellated operable screen facade, each resident room controls their own privacy level and sun shading.

Kansas City Arts Academy Main Question? How to design a Multipurpose Arts Academy in the historical district of downtown Kansas City that appreciates and adds to its context, while also creating a new social hub of community activity?

Sited on the edge of the historic district, the KC Arts Academy seeks to revitalize the area as a social hub for community activity.
3. To attract visitors and exhibit activities, the performance hall is directed towards the community, while the studios and offices face the historic district, allowing them to appreciate its great late nineteenth century buildings. Running down the center, the open lobby connects and creates permeability through all spaces.
2. With the removal of the building’s edge, a sunken theater courtyard is made, both drawing in the community and creating event space. Along the buildings front, a second subtraction provides a covered entryway with protected bike parking.
4. Atop the lobby, classrooms project out onto a greenroof, showcasing itself to the community as a destination for activity.

Communal Gathering
-While Communal Gathering requires a large open space, the Arts Academy will be host to multiple activities, each preferring spaces of varying size and proportion. To achieve both, a movable wall system will be incorporated, creating flexible space.
Customization
-With just 3 movable partitions, virtually any combination of room sizes and shapes can be attained, allowing for ultimate flexibility, where the space can be defined by the activity and not by the size of the room
14. -Acoustic Partitions -Hanger Track -Swing Joint -Partition Hanger -Track Rollers
Room partitions both slide and rotate
