MIADbridge: Art + Public

Dear Reader, Finding ourselves reaching back to our roots, this issue of Art + Public takes a look at the Midwest and the artists making a name, and a home, for themselves there. The Midwest is known for its slower pace and friendly cadence and the artists featured in these pages live up to the well-mannered hype. But be careful not to confuse well-mannered with well-behaved, as these creative minds are both breaking rules and breaking new ground in their pursuit of richer, more colorful communities. On page 6, Step Back & Look at the World, Milwaukee native Isabel Kent takes a close and mindful look at today’s society and ways that we can unlock our deepest potential for an empathetic and well-rounded view of our world. Her words are accompanied by the delicate and perceptive illustrations of guest illustrator Sandra Leidecker. On page 10, If No One Hates It, No One Loves It, you’ll find an exclusive interview with founder and director of The Heidelberg project, Tyree Guyton and Jenenne Whitfield. The two discuss the history of the project, what kind of obstacles they’ve encountered along the way, how they hope to continue influencing their home base of Detroit, Michigan, and what keeps them inspired to work on in spite of dissent. And in our final feature on page 18, The House that Theaster Gates Built, author Deanna Isaacs of the Chicago Reader investigates the work and service of artist Theaster
