Welcome to the Autumn edition of What’s On, your guide to all the exhibitions and events at the National Galleries of Scotland from September to November 2014.

Opening Hours

Accessibility

We are open daily 10am-5pm and until 7pm on Thursdays at the Scottish National Gallery and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

All our galleries have step-free access. There are also specially adapted toilets for wheelchair users. Portable induction loops are available for visitors with hearing difficulties to attend lectures across all our sites. There is also a fixed loop in the Hawthornden Lecture Theatre.

Tickets Admission is free but a charge is sometimes made for special exhibitions. Book at nationalgalleries.org, on 0131 624 6200 or in person at the venue.

Study Facilities There are various resources across the Galleries open to the public for further study and research. The Prints and Drawings Collections in each of the Galleries may be viewed by appointment. The National Photography Collection is housed in the Print Room at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Each Gallery also has a publicly accessible Research Library. For more information on opening times and booking details call 0131 624 6200.

Pig Rock Bothy at Modern One The grounds of Modern One are currently home to a traditional Scottish bothy, designed exclusively as part of GENERATION. Pig Rock Bothy has been created by The Bothy Project - a team comprising artist Bobby Niven and architect Iain MacLeod in collaboration with artist Laura Aldridge. It is a temporary structure which will play host to a dynamic and varied programme of talks, performances, events and screenings. For full listings see nationalgalleries.org

Coming Soon to the Portrait Gallery Later this year, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery plays hosts to two new exhibitions, the first is the welcome return of the BP Portrait Award Exhibition 2014, which celebrates its 25th year of sponsorship by BP this year, and kicks off on 29 November 2014 and showcases the most outstanding and innovative new portraits from around the world. December marks the opening of Ponte City. Ponte City is a 54-storey tower in Johannesburg and from 2007-2012 the building and its inhabitants were documented by South African photographer, Mikhael Subotzky and British artist, Patrick Waterhouse. The resulting photographs reveal the hopes, dreams and realities of these residents living in postapartheid South Africa. The exhibition runs from 6 December 2014 to 26 April 2015.

Print Rooms & Libraries Open Weekends This autumn, visitors to the Galleries will have a special opportunity to visit the Print Rooms, libraries and Archives over two open weekends. Usually open Monday-Friday, the open weekends will provide the chance to explore these world-class facilities and enjoy regular talks throughout the day about artistsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; books, archives and works of art on paper. GENERATION is a ground-breaking three-venue exhibition, at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the Scottish National Gallery and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, that showcases some of the most significant works to be made in Scotland over the last 25 years. Featuring the work of 31 artists, the show includes existing and newly commissioned works, alongside the restaging of several significant exhibitions of the period. It celebrates the diversity, richness and power of the work that artists have made during the last quarter of a century, and which continues to be produced today. Amongst the works on show, the exhibition features new sculptural installations by Karla Black and Claire Barclay,Â paintings by Victoria Morton, Alison Watt and Callum Innes, immersive room-sized installations by Ross Sinclair, Graham Fagen and Martin Boyce, a room of sculptures and prints by David Shrigley, and film and video works by Douglas Gordon, Luke Fowler and Rosalind Nashashibi. 25 Years of Contemporary Art in Scotland Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern One) Until 25 January 2015 Admission free

At SNGMA, the entire Modern One is dedicated to GENERATION, including spectacular installations by Ross Sinclair (Real Life Rocky Mountain, 1996), Graham Fagen (Peek-A-Jobby, 1998) and Turner Prize-winner Simon Starling (Burn-Time, 2000). A diverse range of work by artists such as Victoria Morton, Alison Watt, Julie Roberts, Lucy McKenzie, Kate Davis, Charles Avery and Jonathan Owen demonstrates the continuing vitality of painting and drawing in Scotland Alongside these works are newly commissioned installations by Claire Barclay, Ciara Philips and Alex Dordoy. Douglas Gordon’s celebrated 24 Hour Psycho (1993) is among the video installations on show, as is Smith/Stewart’s Breathing Space (1997), Roddy Buchanan’s Soda Stream (1995) and Torsten Lauschmann’s Growing Zeros (Digital Clock) (2010). At the Scottish National Gallery, large-scale installations such as Steven Campbell’s groundbreaking 1990 On Form and Fiction and Turner Prize-winner Martin Boyce’s 2002 Tramway exhibition Our Love is Like the Flowers, the Rain, the Sea and The Hours are restaged. Also on show are the large scale canvases of Turner Prize nominee Callum Innes and films by Rosalind Nashashibi. Christine Borland and David Shrigley are exhibiting significant works which have never been shown in Scotland, while Karla Black and Sue Tompkins have developed newly commissioned works in response to the unique architecture of the building and its location within the city. GENERATION continues at the Portrait Gallery with Luke Fowler’s 61-minute film The Poor Stockinger, the Luddite Cropper and the Deluded Followers of Joanna Southcott (2012) which builds a profile of the Marxist historian EP Thompson (1924–1993). Fowler was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2012 and received the inaugural Jarman Award in 2008. GENERATION By Night

This season of GENERATION-inspired evening events offers everything from pop-up talks and experimental drawing and writing to live music, curator-led tours and artists’ talks. The Art of Golf – The Story of Scotland’s National Sport Scottish National Gallery Until 26 October 2014 £8 / £6

The Art of Golf is staged to coincide with the match between Europe and the United States for the Ryder Cup team trophy which will be played at Gleneagles, Perthshire in September. This will be only the second time this famous sporting contest has ever been held in Scotland. The exhibition provides a visual history of Scotland’s national sport, bringing together works of art, rare items of golfing memorabilia and museum pieces of unique significance within the game’s history. Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Art Scottish National Gallery Until 14 September 2014 Admission free

This exhibition celebrates the recent acquisition, jointly with the National Gallery in London, of two outstanding mythological paintings by Titian (about 1485/90–1576). It draws on the Gallery’s exceptionally rich collection of 16th century Venetian paintings, drawings and prints to showcase and contextualise Titian’s two Diana canvases. Almost all of the major names in Venetian art of the period are represented. Fair Faces and Dark Places: Prints and Drawings by William Strang (1859 – 1921) Scottish National Gallery 18 October 2014-15 February 2015 Admission free

During his lifetime, Dumbarton-born William Strang (1859 – 1921) built up an international reputation as a highly skilled and imaginative printmaker, portraitist and painter. This exhibition, drawn from the National Galleries of Scotland’s important collection of works on paper by Strang, will feature around 30 prints and drawings spanning the artist’s career, revealing his consummate technical skill and versatility, his powerful sense of psychological intensity and remarkable imagination. #StrangPrints

First Sight showcases some of the superb recent additions to the Scottish National Gallery’s world-class collection of drawings, watercolours and prints. This display offers a selection of around 30 works acquired over the last five years, ranging from 17th-century Old Master prints to the work of Manet and Cézanne in the late 19th-century. This, the first ever exhibition on this subject in this country, explores the response of American artists to French Impressionism. It features major international artists such as James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt, and artists better known to American audiences, such as Theodore Robinson, Childe Hassam, William Merritt Chase and John Twachtman. The Two Roberts: Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern Two) 22 November 2014-24 May 2015 £8 / £6

This will be the first major exhibition of the work of Colquhoun and MacBryde. It comes in their centenary year: MacBryde was born in Maybole in 1913, Colquhoun in Kilmarnock in 1914. They met at Glasgow School of Art in 1933 and became lovers. Moving to London in the early 1940s, they rocketed to fame, becoming two of the most celebrated artists of the postwar period, alongside their friends Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Their work was bought by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and featured in countless major exhibitions. In the 1950s their work dropped out of fashion. Colquhoun died penniless in 1962 aged just 47; MacBryde died four years later. This exhibition of over 100 paintings and drawings - many lent by private collectors and not seen in public for decades - offers the first chance to re-evaluate their extraordinary work. It includes their most celebrated paintings of the 1940s, Colquhoun’s haunting monotypes, their designs for the ballet and theatre, and a remarkable amount of archive material documenting their fascinating lives. #TwoRobertsArt For related events, see pages 30-39.

John Ruskin (1819-1900) is renowned as the greatest British art critic of the 19th century and the champion of Turner, but his role as an artist remains relatively little known. He was also an outstanding draughtsman and watercolour painter, who especially took inspiration from the natural world and architectural subjects. This exhibition illustrates, with the finest examples, the range and quality of his drawn and painted work. Gothic palaces in Venice, wild and spectacular Scottish and Alpine landscapes, and minutely defined and brilliantly coloured birds and plants are among the highlights of the show. John Byrne, who was born in Paisley, is one of Scotland’s most versatile and accomplished artists and writers. This exhibition explores and celebrate his highly innovative and richly varied portraiture. It includes a varied selection of his work including drawings, paintings and multi-media works from across his career, which depict friends and family as well as famous sitters, such as Tilda Swinton and Billy Connolly. Byrne has also produced many insightful and witty self-portraits which form a strong element of the show – the first of his work to be mounted by the National Galleries of Scotland. Following its appearance in Edinburgh the exhibition will tour to Inverness. Organised in partnership with Inverness Museum & Art Gallery. Beauty by Design: Fashioning the Renaissance Scottish National Portrait Gallery 15 November 2014-3 May 2015 Admission free

Beauty by Design is an innovative exhibition linking the renaissance art collections of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Scottish National Gallery to contemporary fashion design, practice and display. The exhibition showcases two different, but inter-connected strands of research activity: responding to old-master paintings in the National Galleries’ collections, UK-based fashion designers have created new works using high-quality materials such as lace, while renaissance art specialists have explored ideas about beauty and cosmetics. The theme of body image is central: the historic paintings have been approached both as a means of challenging current perceptions of physical beauty, and as inspiration for a more diverse and emotionally considerate practice on the part of today’s fashion designers. Beauty by Design has been organised in partnership with Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh and New Media Scotland. It also enjoys the support of Sophie Hallette Lace and All Walks Beyond the Catwalk. Remembering the Great War Scottish National Portrait Gallery Until 5 July 2015 Admission free

This exhibition is at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Thought provoking and poignant, and it encompasses famous Scots as well as less well-known figures.

Largely drawn from works in the National Galleries of Scotland’s collection, the exhibition includes a rich variety of portraits and related works in various media. Among those featured are Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, James Keir Hardie who opposed British involvement in the war, Dr Elsie Ingles who took a team of Scottish nurses to Serbia, artists Sir James Gunn and Sir William Gillies who were wounded in action, James Maxton who organized a ship-workers’ strike during the war and JS Haldane who invented the gas mask. Also included is a portrait of Sir Harry Lauder who entertained troops at the Front and who wrote the morale-boosting anthem ‘Keep Right on to the End of the Road’, and whose only son was killed in France on Boxing Day, 1916. #RtGreatWar Remembering the Great War is part of the First World War Centenary Partnership.

From Across the Pond As autumn approaches, bask in some American sunshine with our American Impressionism events. Both established and emerging international speakers will present at our American Impressionism: A New Vision - An International Symposium on 2 & 3 October. There will be a keynote lecture by Erica Hirshler, Croll Senior Curator of American Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, followed by a day of papers on topics ranging from Sargent’s portraits, the critical reception of American Impressionism and William Merritt Chase and Childe Hassam in New York. On 16 September, join Richard R. Bretell from the University of Texas at Dallas and Richard Thomson, Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh, as they go head-tohead to discuss the aesthetic and national differences between American and French modernism. Specialists from closer to home will explore contemporary literature by Edith Wharton, the real-life gardens featured in these paintings and life in an artist’s colony. For some lighter entertainment, we have a screening of An American in Paris, starring Gene Kelly as a struggling American painter in George Gershwin’s 1928 symphonic poem to Paris. Both attended Glasgow School of Art and have gone on to carve out notable careers in the arts. WW1 Centenary Art Commission Rising mezzo-soprano star Laura Margaret-Smith (pictured, right), currently a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist, is accompanied on piano by Geoffrey Tanti to perform A Castle Mills Suite, a new cycle of songs by John Maxwell Geddes, which was commissioned by Live Music Now Scotland and 14-18 NOW as part of the WW1 Centenary Art Commissions.
