Welcome to the winter edition of What’s On, your guide to all the exhibitions and events at the National Galleries of Scotland from December 2013 to February 2014. We are open daily and entrance is free.

Opening Hours

Accessibility

We are open daily 10am-5pm and until 7pm on Thursdays at the Scottish National Gallery and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. We are open from noon on New Year’s Day.

All our galleries have step-free access. There are also specially adapted toilets for wheelchair users. Portable induction loops are available for visitors with hearing difficulties to attend lectures across all our sites. There is also a fixed loop in the Hawthornden Lecture Theatre.

Tickets Admission to all three of our sites is free but a charge is sometimes made for special exhibitions. Book tickets at nationalgalleries. org, on 0131 624 6200 or in person at the venue.

Study Facilities There are various resources across the Galleries open to the public for further study and research. The Prints and Drawings Collections in each of the Galleries may be viewed by appointment. The National Photography Collection is housed in the Print Room at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. GENERATION at heart of 2014 programme The 2014 programme of exhibitions across the Galleries is set to include international stars, home-grown heroes and living legends covering all forms and disciplines. At the heart of our programme is GENERATION: 25 Years of Contemporary Art in Scotland. The exhibition will feature not only at all our Galleries around the city but also at a host of venues Scotland-wide, all summer from Shetland to Peebles and all points in between. GENERATION is part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme, which is a partnership between the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, Glasgow Life and Creative Scotland. Generation has ambitious goals to raise the profile of contemporary art in Scotland and to increase access and participation. It is being produced with the assistance and expertise of partners including VisitScotland and EventScotland, British Council Scotland, Museums Galleries Scotland, Education Scotland, Young Scot, Children in Scotland and the BBC. The aim is to shine the spotlight on a time when Scotlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reputation as an award-winning, ground-breaking centre for contemporary art has become recognised on a global scale. Among the artists contributing to GENERATION are Charles Avery, Sara Barker, Karla Black, David Shrigley, Martin Boyce, Simon Starling, Sue Tompkins, Christine Borland, Graham Fagen, Roddy Buchanan, Callum Innes, Toby Paterson, Lucy McKenzie, Jim Lambie, Alison Watt, Douglas Gordon and many more. Turner in January Scottish National Gallery 1 – 31 January 2014 Admission free

Welcome in the New Year with our annual display of Turner watercolours. These works, bequeathed to the Gallery by the distinguished collector Henry Vaughan, span Turner’s career and range, from his early topographical wash drawings to his atmospheric sketches of continental Europe from the 1830s and 1840s. Vaughan stipulated in his bequest that these delicate watercolours should be ‘exhibited to the public all at one time, free of charge, during the month of January’ and his wishes have been faithfully adhered to for over 100 years.

Edward Lear in Greece Scottish National Gallery From 15 February 2014 Admission free

Edward Lear (1812-1888) was one of the most original and inspired artists of the Victorian age. Although best known as a writer of nonsense verse, Lear was first and foremost an artist. He was a superb draughtsman and painter of ornithology and landscapes and an adventurous traveller, who regularly visited the Mediterranean and the Near East. Lear had a particular passion for the landscape and culture of Greece. This exhibition comprises an outstanding group of 32 watercolours of mainland Greece, Crete and the Ionian islands, from the collection of the distinguished historian Sir Steven Runciman. These stunning works were allocated to the Scottish National Gallery in 2003 by HM Government through the Acceptance in Lieu scheme. They include beautiful views of Athens, Mount Athos, Corfu, Sparta, Zante, Ithaca and Marathon, painted between 1848 and 1864. The watercolours have been the focus of a major conservation project and will now be shown, fully restored and as an entire group, for the first time. For related events, see pages 24-33.

Allan Ramsay at 300 Scottish National Gallery Until 9 February 2014 Admission free

This display, which showcases the Scottish National Gallery’s unrivaled holdings of drawings by Allan Ramsay, marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of one of Scotland’s most celebrated artists. Born in Edinburgh, Ramsay was internationally renowned for his outstanding portraits and was appointed King’s Painter to George III. He stands apart from his contemporaries in his life-long devotion to drawing, and hundreds of sheets by him survive. These provide a fascinating insight into his technical procedure, revealing the highly refined drawing and modelling skills which underpin his painted portraits. For related events, see pages 24-33.

Rodin’s The Kiss Scottish National Gallery Until 2 February 2014 Admission free

This is your last chance to see Auguste Rodin’s magnificent marble sculpture as its year-long loan from Tate Britain comes to an end. Rodin is widely regarded as one of the greatest sculptors of the 19th century and this life-size evocation of love is among his most famous works. Such was the allure of The Kiss that hundreds of bronze copies were produced by the Paris Barbedienne foundry. As a result, this spectacular sculpture has become one of the most instantly recognised and bestloved works of art in the world.

Constable’s Portrait of Laura Moubray Scottish National Gallery On display now Admission free

We are delighted to announce a remarkable acquisition which brings together two great artists from very different eras. Portrait of Laura Moubray, a fine early work by the English landscape painter John Constable (1776-1837), has entered the National collection from the estate of the artist Lucian Freud (1922-2011) through the Government’s Acceptance in Lieu (AIL) scheme. Portrait of Laura Moubray is a fascinating addition to the Scottish National Gallery. Constable is believed to have painted only around 100 portraits during his early career, of which about 50 survive. The painting complements the Galleries’ existing holdings of the artist’s work: the major landscape The Vale of Dedham (1828) and the small, vigorously executed sketch On the Stour (1830). The portrait is now on show at the Scottish National Gallery. For related events, see pages 24-33.

The Scottish Colourist Series: JD Fergusson Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern Two) 7 December 2013 – 15 June 2014 £7 / £5

The National Galleries of Scotland’s landmark Scottish Colourist Series of exhibitions culminates this winter with the eagerly anticipated retrospective of the work of JD Fergusson (1874-1961). Fergusson was born in Leith, and was essentially self-taught. He moved to Paris in 1907 where, more than any of his Scottish contemporaries, Fergusson assimilated the latest developments in French painting into his work. In 1913 he met the dance pioneer Margaret Morris (1891-1980), who became his life-long partner. Morris, her technique, pupils and Summer Schools, became the main sources of inspiration for Fergusson’s work, before his death in Glasgow in 1961. More than 100 paintings, sculptures, works on paper and items of archival material, lent from public and private collections throughout the UK, will be on display. The companion exhibition, JD Fergusson: Picture of a Celt, will be held at The Fergusson Gallery in Perth from 7 December 2013 until 15 June 2014 (see www.pkc.gov.uk). Admission is free. ARTIST ROOMS: Louise Bourgeois, A Woman Without Secrets Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern One) Until 18 May 2014 Admission free

This major presentation of work by the great FrenchAmerican artist Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) is the first showing of an outstanding collection of sculptures, works on paper and fabric pieces by the artist now on loan to the national ARTIST ROOMS collection and touring programme. Highlighting the artist’s late work, the exhibition reveals how Bourgeois employed a wide variety of materials and scales to investigate the mystery, beauty and complexity of human emotions. The exhibition includes two late masterpieces: the cycle of 16 monumental drawings A l’in�ini 2008-9 and the artist’s final vitrine, Untitled 2010 alongside important loans from Tate and other collections. Together these works offer an unparalleled opportunity to explore the unique imagination and power of Bourgeois’s artistic vision. A complementary exhibition of prints and drawings by Louise Bourgeois is on display in Edinburgh at The Fruitmarket Gallery – Louise Bourgeois: I Give Everything Away, until 23 February 2014. This display, which occupies the whole top floor of Modern One, highlights some fabulous recent additions to the National Galleries Collection. Among the new acquisitions are a major bequest from the collection of the late Henry and Sula Walton of prints by Picasso, Cézanne, and Hockney and paintings by Joan Eardley; works by Michael Craig-Martin donated by Eric and Jean Cass through the Contemporary Art Society; paintings by Carole Gibbons, Charles Pulsford and Edwin G. Viviane Sassen: In and Out of Fashion Scottish National Portrait Gallery Until 2 February 2014 Admission free

Dutch-born Viviane Sassen is one of the most exciting figures in contemporary fashion photography. Her imagery is challenging and flamboyant, formally inventive and occasionally surreal. She has created campaigns for fashion houses including Carven, Stella McCartney and M Missoni and has produced editorials in magazines such as Purple, i-D and Dazed & Confused. In 2007 Sassen received the Prix de Rome and in 2011 was awarded the International Center of Photography Infinity Award for Applied and Fashion Photography. In 2013 she exhibited in the Central Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. This exhibition is Sassen’s first retrospective and comes to the Portrait Gallery from Huis Marseille Museum, Amsterdam. Alexander Stoddart: Making History Scottish National Portrait Gallery Until 28 September 2014 Admission free

In 2011 Alexander Stoddart (Sculptor in Ordinary to The Queen in Scotland) was commissioned by the National Galleries of Scotland to make a monumental figure of History for the empty pinnacle above the entrance to the Gallery. The statue, cast in aluminium, was installed on 22 September 2013. Alexander Stoddart: Making History explores and celebrates this commission; Stoddart’s preparatory studies for History are on display, together with a commentary by the sculptor. Tickling Jock: Comedy Greats from Sir Harry Lauder to Billy Connolly Scottish National Portrait Gallery Until 25 May 2014 Admission free

Tickling Jock celebrates Scotland’s masters of mirth and our truly distinctive contribution to the world of entertainment in the 20th century. We turn the spotlight on performers who have generated laughter at home and abroad. The list of comedy greats includes variety stars of the music hall, stage, gramophone and radio alongside comedians and actors who have made audiences fall about with laughter on the big and small screens. The Nation//Live Work, Union, Civil War, Faith, Roots Scottish National Portrait Gallery Until 6 May 2014 Admission free

This exhibition features works of art created during five community outreach projects, which investigate the contemporary relevance of major transformations in Scottish history. Inspired by the portraits and personalities from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery collection, artists have led groups in four regional locations – Clydebank, Inverness, Dumfriesshire and Skye – to explore the impact of themes that define the national narrative. Roots, the fifth project, is an innovative collaboration led by folk musician Drew Wright (aka Wounded Knee) which sees migrants to Scotland create new music to represent their view of Scotland’s future. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a powerful new film by Daniel Warren which unites all the projects and reveals how today’s Scots feel about their ability to shape their own lives. Historic Embroidery in Contemporary Times We are delighted to welcome Helen McCook to the National Galleries of Scotland from January to April 2014 where she will be introducing the art of stitch in its many forms to children and families, students and teachers, the visually impaired and adults, both amateur and expert. Keen to meet and interact with as many people as possible, Helen will be based at the Portrait Gallery at set times, stitching, explaining, advising and telling tales of just exactly how much blood, sweat and tears went into the making of some of the elaborate costumes portrayed in the collection. Helen teaches at the Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court Palace and she is the author of Goldwork (Essential Stitch Guide). She was part of the team who created the embellishment on the dress, veil and shoes for the wedding of Catherine Middleton and Prince William and has worked on costumes for London West End, Broadway and German theatre productions. As the nights draw in, the events programme gets festive with Christmas-themed highlight tours of the National Gallery, exploring scenes of celebration and winter weather within the collection, and a journey through the history of a quintessentially Scottish festive tradition, the pantomime, by Paul Maloney. In January, The Vaughan Bequest returns and to celebrate this quirky Edinburghtradition, Julia Beaumont-Jones offers an insight into the place of Edinburgh’s collection of Turner’s work within his wider oeuvre. Our series of exhibitions on the Scottish Colourists culminates with the JD Fergusson retrospective. To open the discussion, Jenny Kinnear introduces Fergusson’s art and notoriously bohemian lifestyle with the dancer, Margaret Morris. To expand perspectives on this fascinating figure in Scottish art, Elizabeth Cumming explains the importance of France for Fergusson throughout his career and Sheila McGregor explores his relationship with indigenous Celtic tradition and the resurgence of Scottish Nationalism. This February half-term, we are lucky enough to have embroidery artist Helen McCook at the Portrait Gallery. Inspired by the Great Hall and William Hole’s frieze, join Helen for the Big Stitch Up! and help create a giant communal work of art, experimenting with colour, texture and super-size stitches. In Drawing with Thread, explore the exciting world of fabrics and work on a project of your own. To celebrate the theme, storyteller and musician Marion Kenny will be spinning yarns in the gallery.
