McGill College, Reinventing the Avenue

01. Park and public space

Drummondville library

Location. Drummondville, Canada.

Description. The layout is inspired by the undulating and expressive shapes of the building to deploy them throughout the site. The library landscape includes the creation of paved footpaths, the planting of various varieties of trees, shrubs and grasses, and the placement of wooden and concrete furniture and benches. A large open space on the lawn allows the reception of events.

Status. Completed in 2017.

Project team. Civiliti with Chevalier Morales Architects.

Role within project. Responsible for conceptual design, 3D modeling and perspectives, production of presentation documents, and preparation of the preliminary sketch.

02. Park and public space

The Discovery Halts of

Mont-Royal

Location. Parc du Mont-Royal, Montréal, Canada.

Description. As part of the 375th anniversary of the founding of the City of Montreal, the project aims to develop the heritage site of Mont-Royal Park through the establishment of a special commemorative trail. It includes a family of objects made in granite and bronze: tridimensional maps designed as orientation devices, low conical stones serving as place-markers in the landscape, and larger belvedere-like halts.

Status. Completed in 2018.

Project team. Civiliti with Vlan paysages, Luu Nguyen landscape architect, Services EXP and Luce Lafontaine architect.

Role within project. Concept design and preliminary sketch of the project, 3D modeling, production of presentation document, management of the production of prototypes and construction drawings.

03. Park and public space

Séminaire square

Location. Rue du Séminaire, Montréal, Canada.

Description. Following the public development guidelines of the area, the Séminaire square was built in 2019 and offers a break space along the Lachine Canal. A specific design of furniture has been developed to mark the public domain as a place for socialization.

Status. Completed in 2019. Project team. Civiliti with Fnx-innov.

Role within project. Responsible for design, preparation of preliminary sketch, detailed design, estimates, production of construction drawings and specifications.

04. Park and public space

La Fontaine park

Location. Parc La Fontaine, Montréal, Canada.

Description. Located in the heart of a mature park, the project offers a landscape dedicated to childhood through a journey of discovery. Small thematic islands are distributed over the site, and connected by a water circuit. Playful and idenfifiable elements staging Writing guide the children along the site discovery.

Status. Under construction.

Project team. Civiliti with CMA Architects, Dikini, Tetra Tech, Nadeau Foresterie Urbaine and UDO Design.

Role within project. Analysis of existing conditions, programming and development of a conservation strategy, design and preliminary outline of the project, research on materials and equipment, project budget, overall team coordination, construction drawings and specifications.

05. Private development

Housing development Outremont

Location. Avenue de Gaspé, Montréal, Canada.

Description. Located on the site of a former industrial wasteland, the subdivision includes three buildings on two separate lots. Civiliti carries out the entire landscape architecture of the project, including the design of the spaces adjacent to the public domain as well as the interior courtyards, the roofs, the pedestrian walkway and the front courtyards. The project is based on close collaboration with the team of architects and engineers for the development of leveling and stormwater management strategies.

Status. Under construction.

Project team. Civiliti with Chevalier Morales Architects and Equipe SP Inc.

Role within project. Analysis of the directives and regulations in force, development of an overall plan, sketches, detailed design, research on materials, construction budget, coordination of the teams assigned to the project, responsible for the production of construction documents and specifications, and first stages of site supervision.

Development guidelines

Saint-Laurent’s Biodiversity Corridor

Location. Arrondissement de Saint-Laurent, Montréal, Canada.

Description. Located in a vast area fragmented between industrial, commercial and residential sectors, the project proposes the gradual installation of new green, blue and social infrastructure. It aims to restore people’s contact with nature by creating a healthy urban environment. The master plan describes all the planned short and long-term developments that promote the preservation of ecosystems, the creation of new natural environments, the increase in biodiversity, water management, as well as the planning of recreational and cultural activities.

Status. Award winner. Completed in 2019.

Project team. Civiliti with LAND Italia, Table Architecture et Biodiversité Conseil.

Role within project. Analysis of the existing infrastructure, synthesis of current data and development of the vision and guidelines, support for the structure, drafting and production of the master plan, coordination of the internal team.

07. Development guidelines

Griffintown public domain

Location. Quartier de Griffintown, Montréal, Canada.

Description. The guidelines illustrate the developtment concept of the public domain and the preliminary geometry for all the streets in the neighborhood. Over the next ten years, it will help supervise the various designers involved in the creation of the public domain The establishment of good practices in terms of sustainable development (integration of cycle paths, tree planting and better management of rainwater) guided the design of the future public domain. Several street typologies accompanied by a specific design of furniture have been developed to meet all the criteria.

Status. Completed in 2019.

Role within project. Development of different street typologies, development of the overall plan and drafting of guidelines, study of geometry options and realization of a final geometry, feasibility study of cycle paths, overall budget estimate of the project.

08. Competition

Simon-Valois Shared Space

Location. Rue Ontario, Montréal, Canada.

Description. The Simon-Valois meeting area extends the existing public square onto the adjacent streets. The new layout creates an open area dedicated to urban movements, predominantly pedestrian. This flexible and safe place allows for animation and event programming. A family of corten steel furniture is used to express the historic railway use.

Competition

McGill College, Reinventing the Avenue

Location. Avenue McGill College, Montréal, Canada.

Description. The project aims to develop a new public square by transforming McGill College avenue for pedestrian use. To constitute a diversified landscape and promote an enrichment of biodiversity, a linear park extends continuously along this historic axis. It is bordered by a long winding bench and a generous esplanade. To retain rainwater, a channel takes shape in the roadway. It evolves between the pebbles, a collection of furniture, which offer spaces for intimacy and pause.

Status. Award winner. In development.
