SS13 FASHION WEEK MEXICO CITY Ushering in a new Mexican wave with Mercedes-Benz

The bastions of high fashion – New York, London, Paris and Milan – will always lay claim to their own respective and established territories within the global market. But the Mercedes-Benz/ Dazed Fashion Broadcasting project invests in the industry’s outlying areas: those previously overlooked cities whose younger generations of designers are proving to be real contenders on the global stage. The sixth instalment of the project takes place in Mexico, a country with a colourful history that was visibly woven into the distinctive threads shown at the country’s fashion week in November. The clash between the pop sensibility of some designers and the more loyal adherence to tradition of others is evidence of Mexico’s creative scene. A multiplicity of reference points and ideals coexists comfortably, reflecting a wider sense of acceptance between everybody involved. Fashion Week Mexico City is an all-encompassing affair that sees a relaxed atmosphere maintained between buyers, bloggers, special guests and designers. The 21 shows hosted by MercedesBenz were held in the Santa Fe tent, which not only showcased the best emerging talent, but considered the global impact of Mexican clothing in recent years; from crochet to embroidery to the bold clash between streetwear and

Clockwise from above: LYDIA LAVIN The main impetus for Lydia Lavín’s SS13 collection was embroidery techniques collected from local craftsmen in Cuetzalan, Puebla. The colourful collection is an innovative collision of new and old. CARLA FERNANDEZ With garments resembling traditional huipiles and rebozos (local pashminas), Carla Ferdandez’s collection, which was inspired by the Mexican Caribbean, distilled her country’s rich aesthetic heritage. Her garments were made at the hands of Yucatán and Campeche craftsmen, and referenced the archaeological drawings of Miguel Covarrubias.

organic fabrics such as wool, linen and untreated cotton. Many designers have taken inspiration from the nation’s rich aesthetic heritage, from the first collection by California’s Shaun Samson to the Givenchy’s AW10 couture collection (inspired by Frida Kahlo). So what’s next for Mexico? And what can we expect to see filtering through internationally? Here Dazed selects a handful of the country’s most promising designers from the event to take a closer look.

PINK MAGNOLIA The SS13 collection from Pink Magnolia took inspiration from designer/founder Paola Wong’s previous collaborative ventures with Disney and Swarovski. Chiffon, silk and lashings of glitter stood out among the a-line skirts, culottes, bodysuits and the collection’s staple: white platform shoes. MALAFACHA Victor Hernal and Francisco Saldana, the creative force behind Malafacha, delivered ready-to-wear Seine trousers and raincoats for a collection inspired by a Kurt Weill song based on a Roger Fermay poem. The 20 looks, or “teams” as the designers call them, epitomised light-weight, springtime simplicity. TEXT NATHALIE OLAH PHOTOGRAPHY CUAUHTEMOC SUAREz
