David has been a vendor on the street market has to be used in the market, market since he was 13 years old. I asked him what visible improvements to the was his favourite aspect of selling on market. He spoke a lot about the govleather lane, and he answered that there ernment, and the general disinterest in was a very strong social aspect the working class. David spoke about and sense of community on Brexit, and said that many of the people the street. Some vendors have been that voted to leave only wanted change, because they aren’t benefitting from the on the street for 40 years, he also says current state of affairs. that he enjoys the conversation with customers, and appreciates the varying I asked David what would be his ideal backgrounds that people come from. In market environment and he suggested his words “I can be serving a tax lawthat he’d like to see the market being a yer, who’s stood next to a meth addict weekend and nightly event, and perhaps y’know, it doesn’t really matter where the introduction of music, arts, and a you come from.” He made a point of commenting on the lack of interest from the labour council governing the constituency of Islington, as the money generated from the

platform for local creatives to generate interest and business.

“6-7 St Cross Street started out life as a bullion-processing centre for Johnson Matthey. This refurbishment for Derwent London involved opening up and expanding the floor-plate by reconfiguring toilet cores and lobbies. The design strategy maximised lettable space and maintained generous ceiling heights and offered enhanced flexibility by relocating fan-coil units to the perimeter. The services and suspended lighting are exposed against a backdrop of robust painted concrete. The memory of the buildings previous use is humorously referenced with leftover gold ingots.” http://www.hkarchitects.co.uk/archive/67-st-cross-street/#&panel1-6

Morning. Leather Lane market is devoid of the market, which the setup for begins at 11am. Most of the traffic passing through is deliveries and people heading to work in the places of business along the street.

Midday during the week and the market is at its busiest. People on their lunch break meander around the stalls offering delights from varying cultures. Smells fill the street and make it extremely difficult to resist a bite to eat. People pass around the building, occupying the courtyard at the back to eat their lunch or pass through into the surrounding offices.

Nighttime and most of the office workers have returned home. The bustle of the market died away around 3pm and left the street devoid of activity. Anyone walking through the street now uses it as a route to their next destination for the business of the street to resume the following day.

BLADE RUNNER NOODLE BAR

Blade Runner - Ridley Scott (1982) Sketches and designs by Syd Mead 3D model reinterpreted by me The noodle bar in the scene really epitomises the night market atmosphere of Asia, but with the element of tech-noir. The set is essentially a sidewalk diner, with a compact kitchen for noodle prep and service.

SPIRITED AWAY

SCREENCAPS AND A SKETCHED INTERPRETATION

The architectural language and atmosphere that is portrayed in the Bath House in Spirited Away is a language that I would like to interpret into my architecture. The organic and scattered aesthetic coincides with the idea that marketplaces are a collaborative, societal, and self-sufficient space.

CONCEPT SKETCHES

INITIAL 3D MODEL FIRST ITERATION 3D MODEL WITH EXPERIMENTS WITH OPENING AND CLOSING ELEMENTS Using the Spirited Away reinterpretation, I created a first iteration 3d model of my night market. One thing that I wanted to emphasise is the elements of opening and closing, as during the day, the architecture would be closed to the public and prep would occur for the evening service, when the architecture comes to life from the outside and opens up to the public. I still need to incorporate the exterior noodle bar and create a more cohesive design structurally.
