ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO

HELLO. My name is Nathan Doggett

While I was a student at Iowa State University, I developed a passion not only for architecture, but also for psychology. As a student, I invested my time in understanding emotion and the complexity of the human mind. All my projects are driven by my desire to create an atmosphere that puts the wellness of its users at the center. Throughout my professional career, I have had the opportunity to work on many different project types, including commercial/office, religious, recreation, municipal, K-12, multi-family housing, and historic preservation.

DES MOINES FLYING SERVICE

DES MOINES, IOWA

DES MOINES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HANGAR RELOCATION PROJECT COMPLETED: APRIL 2021 SQUARE FOOTAGE: 27,800 SF BUDGET: $7.8 MILLION The Des Moines International Airport is exploring a new terminal. Des Moines Flying Service was one of the first hangars to be relocated to start the process. An important aspect of this project was the division between the administration space and the maintenance hangar. This resulted in a large corridor dubbed “the blade” in the center of the project to divide the two spaces. At nearly 22 feet in height, this corridor leaves an impact. Digital modeling and rendering played a huge project in the design and finishes seen throughout this project. I joined this design process during the Design Development phase. As the General Contractor’s main point of contact throughout Construction Admin, I was able to gain a lot of experience in this phase.

WASHINGTON, IOWA CITY OF WASHINGTON

CITY HALL AND POLICE RENOVATION PROJECT COMPLETED: DECEMBER 2020 SQUARE FOOTAGE: 9,500 SF BUDGET: $1.9 MILLION

The current building holds the City Hall, Police Station, and Fire Station for the city of Washington, Iowa. The initial phase consisted of an addition to relocate the Fire Station. The second phase was to convert the remaining building to the new City Hall and Police Station. This project included complete demolition of the interior as well as the roof. Layout and flow throughout the municipalities was key throughout the entire design process. I joined this design process during Construction Documents. I focused on color selections and reviewing submittals throughout Construction Administration and Closeout.

RENDERINGS

I have achieved proficiency in a number of different rendering softwares including; V-Ray, Enscape and Lumion. I continue to develop my skills in Photoshop by touching up the renderings. This extra process pushes the image beyond the restraints of the software and gives me the opportunity to add much more dimension. Enscape and Lumion both come with a live sync feature, meaning the computer will render your scene in real time and update as you make changes. I have used this multiple times during meetings with project Owners. Not everyone has the ability to decipher what small revisions to the floor plan mean in 3D. Through this process, I can show the owner, visually, what each change means for their building.

TRANSITIONAL TENSION

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON PIER 62 + 63

THERMAL BATH + REHAB CENTER BOSUK HUR - 5TH YEAR STUDIO TRANSITIONAL TENSION is a project that uses form to alter emotions with the space. The roof features a variety of angles that, when perceived within the space, give the users different levels of tension. We chose to give the users within the thermal bath space higher tension, while those within the rehabilitation center experience less tension. This resulted in much higher, intense angles above the thermal baths and much more gentle sloping angles above the rehabilitation spaces. The assignment required antithesis to be used within the programs, this meant that program layout was essential due to the importance of separation of public and private spaces. This project was completed in collaboration with Kelly Hanson.

MIRAGE

US + MEXICO BORDER BORDER WALL PROPOSAL DEBORAH HAUPTMANN - IND. STUDY MIRAGE is a conceptual exploration of the US – Mexico border. The project aims to compare a Utopic – Dystopic dichotomy to provide a solution to the issue of illegal immigration as well as working to promote community and acceptance. Most of the border is kept as a desolate wasteland to prevent connections and to further divide not only the two countries, but the people within each country. This border wall proposal seeks to create new Utopian communities through a vast number of nodes. These nodes accentuate various connections through material manipulation, programs that provide opportunities for unity and enlightenment, as well as spaces that focus on atmosphere and emotion.

ID8 ARCHITECTS

DES MOINES, IOWA STUDENT INTERNSHIP During my time as a student, I had been a student intern for ID8 Architects (Shiffler Associates Architects) in Des Moines, Iowa. At the beginning of my employment I spent most of my time drafting in Revit and AutoCAD. The second summer I was given a little more freedom. In addition to drafting, I began to create graphics and renderings for the office. I worked closely with other employees to help pick colors and materials on projects around the metro. Towards the end of my internship, I worked with the managing partner to produce working drawings for an addition to the Jethro’s in Altoona, Iowa.
