LINCOLN

PARK

LIBRARY

The Lincoln Park Library is located at the Fullerton L stop in Chicago, Il. This was a very interesting and difficult site to work with since it was located next to the train. The project asked to design a 30,000 sqft library on a site that was 80’ x 140’. The library was designed with all age groups in mind. The first floor is a meeting area and a large lobby atrium. As you progress up the building you will find the second floor to be dedicated to children and adult learning. With a modern library in mind, the adult areas are centered around the computer, a new age technology that may not be familiar to them, while the childrens area is dedicated to traditional books and physical learning. This idea of digital and physical is seen in the plans, as well in the materials of the building seen in the elevation. The thrid floor is for research and book printing. The library gives people the opportunity to print a book from there facebook profile and store it on the shelves. The structure of the building streches out like arms that maxamizes open space while creating light wells.

THE BEACH HOUSE WAY A lot of good design is finding simple ways to make a big difference. The beach house is a 800 sqft wood framed structure for a family of four. The structure is lifted 22 feet above the tree line for wind ventelation, has only three rooms for a the family, has all screen walls, while keeping privacy is at a maximal level. Privacy was accomplished by closely studying the way the room organization, and only placing walls to not block the wind ventalation. While closely studying the project, and with the client in mind, it was discovered that water was a problem. The family would have to find a source of water, then haul it up 22 feet just to store it; and showers were out of the question. To solve this, the roof was designed in such a way that water could not only be collected, but a rainy day would provide a nice white noise, as well as additional privacy with a waterfall for the master bedroom. By simply inverting a roof, and tilting it down a few degrees, this structure changes the way people will experience camping, and improves hygene, sanatation, and hydration. What inspires me in architecture is the fact that the way something is designed can change or even save lives.

Good design can inspire others. Great design will shape the way buildings or communities are built. Santa Fe, New Mexico has a strong culture and building style. The city is also located in high altatude, and is exposed to southern sunlight for most of the year. This project focused on one unit on an urban block, and the goal was to create a new zero commercial store, with a net zero condo/apartment on top. This is acomplished by creating two trumb walls on the south side of the building to maxamize the solar gain in the winter, while having the balcony overhang the walls in the summer so it does not heat up. The north side has few windows, but has large bay windows so the residents can look up/down the street and interect with the community. Simple environmental systems like passave solar heating and ventalation, designed correctly, will shape the world and create a better environment.
