GUEST SPEAKERS Matthew D. LaPlante ■ is an author and journalist
whose work focuses on science, sports and global crises. He has reported from more than a dozen nations for publications including The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Daily News and CNN. com on subjects including ritual infanticide in Northeast Africa, the legacy of genocide in Southwest Asia, epidemic gang violence in Central America and insurgent warfare in the Middle East. He is an associate professor of journalism at Utah State University, where he has cultivated a reputation as one of the toughest teachers on campus.
Ryan Cheek ■ is a nationally recognized policy debate coach
and instructor of communication at Weber State University where he teaches courses such as Analysis of Argument and Communication Law. As a self-styled student activist who learned the limitations of Tinker and impositions of Hazelwood the hard way, Ryan was disciplined multiple times in high school for engaging in anti-war and Gay-Straight Alliance actions. He has a B.S. in Sociology from Weber State University, an M.A. in Communication and Journalism from the University of Wyoming and will begin working on a Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Rhetoric this fall at Utah State University.
Eric Peterson ■ is the Executive Director of The Utah Investi-
gative Journalism Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to strengthening watchdog journalism in the state. He previously worked at The Salt Lake City Weekly where he broke numerous stories on allegations of pay-to-play corruption at the Attorney General’s Office. He also currently serves as President of the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
