EDUCATING RITA Director’s Notes

In this country getting an education is required. I take that back, going to school is required, getting an education is a choice. How much education you get is up to you. I take that back, how much education you get is determined by your life circumstances. And a better life will give you a better education. I take that back, having a better education will give you a better life. And a better life will make you happy. I take that back, being happy is not determined by a better life or a better education. So having an education will give you….You know what? I don’t know. Maybe that’s what education gives you, the ability to say I don’t know. I take that back, I know plenty of educated people who will never admit they don’t know. But having an education gives you the ability to ask questions, to seek answers, to doubt, to question, to reason, to see beyond your life circumstances. I take that back, having a curious mind gives you the desire to ask questions, to seek answers, to doubt, to question, to reason, to see beyond your life circumstances and in to others. And that will give you an education.

THE WIZARD OF OZ Director’s Notes THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME Reflections on The Wizard of Oz Who has not experienced the movie The Wizard of Oz? (Actually, you’d be surprised, but we have employees here at Barter who have never seen the film.) I remember every year at Easter we used to gather as a family and watch this wonderful film with great delight and anticipation. I do mean every year. I’m willing to bet that most of you know almost all of the music from this show by heart as Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg have written some of the most popular and heartwarming music ever to grace film or stage. The story originated in 1900, when L. Frank Baum wrote the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He went on to write fourteen Oz books in all. Plus he wrote a collection of related short stories. Baum died in 1919, with his last book on the subject, Glinda of Oz, published posthumously. If you have not taken the opportunity to read all of these books or to read them with your children or grandchildren, I would highly recommend that you revisit these masterpieces that made Baum one of the most loved and most read American children’s authors of all time. I have discovered immense pleasure immersing myself in these works once again. There has been much written about the meaning and allegories of the Oz books and of The Wizard of Oz in particular. The preoccupation with bringing such meaning to Baum’s writing was spurred largely by an article by Henry Littlefield in 1964, who really just wanted to teach history to his students through the use of Baum’s books. Following Littlefield’s article, many other scholars began to write about the political and financial allegories contained within The Wizard of Oz (after all, Baum was at one time a political reporter and newspaper man), to which Littlefield responded that his theory about Baum had no basis in fact and that his intention was “not to label Baum, or to lessen any of his magic, but rather, as a history teacher at Mount Vernon High School, to invest turn-of-the-century America with the imagery and wonder [he had] always found in Baum’s stories.” For those who have the desire, articles speculating on the historical and financial allegories contained in the Oz books are quite interesting. But in the end, L. Frank Baum created a work that spoke to the true American notion of family and self. Regardless of distance, regardless of tough economic conditions, regardless of adversity or conflict of any kind, in the end it is family and a sense of inner self that will get you through. Dorothy, who dreams the dream of being “Over the Rainbow,” discovers that there is truly “no place like home.” She learns, as we all must do, that it is in ourselves, in who we are and where we came from, that the lessons of life are found and that if we can’t find it there, we will never find it anywhere else. We must discover ourselves in our homes – whatever and wherever we call home – and in our family and friends. Once discovered, usually through the help of others, then, and only then, can we take that journey to live our dream – even if those dreams take us over the rainbow. In the end, when we go over the rainbow, home will be with us, inside of us. For, indeed, there is no place like home.

WELCOME BACK TO IVY GAP Director’s Notes I grew up in a Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and so much of my life was shaped by the women who made the day-to-day life of the church run. They were the ones who headed every committee, organized every event, knew the goings on of every church member, and who loved us and each other fiercely. The women in this play feel like home. There’s a reason that Barter audiences have loved the women of First Baptist of Ivy Gap for more than a decade: We all know these ladies. We know them because they live around us every day. We recognize our aunts, our friends, our mothers, ourselves. These familiar women are faced with big questions in this play. Change has come to each of their lives, and they are not sure how they fit anymore. In the past, their best answers have been to stay put and to hold the course to solve problems. But now, there is a new pastor and a new chapter in each of their personal lives, and they find themselves searching for their place in the world. Each of them has to ask herself: Who am I now? Where do I belong? And don’t we all ask ourselves those questions from time to time, especially as we get older? Just like the women of Ivy Gap, we come to a crossroads where we find that the self we have always been won’t quite fit into the new world in front of us. What happens then? What do we do now? It makes me think of the monarch caterpillars my mother used to share with her kindergarten classes each year. She would collect the caterpillars and then over weeks she and the students would watch them spin their chrysalises and finally hatch out as their butterfly selves. It was never as simple a process as I imagined— it was in fits and starts and sometimes looked painful. They had to struggle to become their new selves—but they did. Beauty came from the struggle to change into the new selves they had to become. It’s the same way with these women—they have to allow themselves to become who they must be for this new stage of their lives. This time it’s not just about staying put. This time they let go of some of the familiar in order to learn how to fly--and they do it with all the love, humor, and personality of those incredible ladies who built my childhood and maybe yours as well. Welcome home, indeed.

HOLLYWOOD CONFIDENTIAL Director’s Notes SOMETIMES IT IS JUST BETTER TO LAUGH Thoughts about Hollywood Confidential There are times—maybe more and more these days—when you just need to laugh. And that’s why we are here. I have always had great admiration for playwrights who can bring us a good story, create witty and clever dialogue, transport us to places where we can get away and have fun and who can in the process make us laugh. You know the old adage of actors in the theatre, “Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.” It’s really difficult to make people laugh in today’s world. We come into the theatre out of a stressful world with a load of anxieties and pockets full of worries. We also have access to tons of entertainment that tries hard to make us laugh: videos, friends’ posts, television and way over-the-top movies. We think we’ve seen it all. We are jaded and judgmental. This is why I love the work of V. Cate and Duke Ernsberger, who have successfully made audiences laugh uncontrollably at Barter Theatre since their first play here in 2007. And whose stories and characters we have loved in the process. Why are they successful in making us laugh? Because, like any good comedy, we recognize ourselves and people we know in their plays. The struggles of the characters are familiar to us in all of the good and comforting ways. Attending the plays of V. Cate and Duke Ernsberger is like visiting friends we love who make us feel better and with whom we have a great time every visit. We understand the struggles of their characters to get ahead and the obstacles that keep them from reaching their dreams. We see our own struggles and feel better about our lives watching others battle all of the obstacles preventing them from succeeding. They remind us that we, as humans, are simply funny; and I don’t meant that in a judgemental way. We simply can be humorous creatures even as we strive for perfection in our lives. Man plans and God laughs. I’m not afraid to tell you, I love this play. I laughed out loud when I read it, which is very rare for me. We laughed a lot while we rehearsed it. And I laugh every time I watch it. So do me a favor as you watch this play: leave everything that happened today or yesterday and that you might be thinking about for tomorrow or the future behind, outside of the theatre; just let all of your cares go away for a while; relax, have fun and laugh…a lot. Because sometimes, it is just better to laugh!

A FACILITY FOR LIVING Director’s Notes A NEW ERA OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY Satire: a genre of literature in which irony, sarcasm, or ridicule is used to point out the vices, follies, abuses and shortcomings of a system, ideally with the intent of shaming corporations, government or society itself into improvement It is about time that a playwright has had the nerve, nay, the courage, to write about the elderly, their abuse of our government systems, and their need to take responsibility for the way they have selfishly lived their lives. In A Facility for Living, our brave playwright introduces us to a new era of personal responsibility, where no longer will the elderly be treated with kid gloves simply because of their age and fragility. No longer will the excuses of “The Greatest Generation” be heard to justify their selfishness. “I fought in two wars,” you might hear one of them whine. Yeah, well you also ate, drank, and smoked yourself into a diabetic coma and now I have to pay for it with my health insurance premiums! Today’s story is about a heroic young woman, Nurse Claudia, who has been charged with the impossible task of keeping four irresponsible elderly citizens from sucking the government dry of its resources with their seemingly unending demands of food, medicine, and services (including hearing aid batteries and colostomy bags!). As you’ll see, Nurse Claudia has her work cut out for her as these four old leeches attempt to undermine her authority by, of all things, putting on play readings. It seems we have a couple of actors in this group of misfits who think they might be able to salvage some dignity, and prolong their inevitable eternal sleep by having something to look forward to like a play reading. This play is a warning shot. A call-to-action. No longer can we enable the elderly on their long, slow, resource-sucking march to the grave. We must be vigilant. We must live by the biblical warning: “ye shall reap what ye sow.” We must preserve our future by holding our past accountable and recognize that we have nothing to learn from those who have been before us. Rather, we must realize that our hope lies in a world in which people take responsibility for their actions whatever their age, social status, creed or color. They say that laughter is the best medicine—well, get ready for a big healthy dose as you watch these bumbling old troublemakers try to bring down our country and sabotage our future.
