SASK STORIES We are the Art 10 classes of Aden Bowman Collegiate and we were involved in an exciting project this semester. Professional comic book artist, Nathen Wahl, came into our classes to guide us through the process of designing our own comic.
With Nathen’s guidance we did storyboarding exercises and character development; we worked on creating dynamic facial expressions as well as poses for our characters; we practiced crosshatching and shading using lots of different techniques; we
also learned about different points of view, about gutters and even comic lettering. The comic you are holding in your hands is what happened when we put all of the above learning into practice. We hope you enjoy it!
Arts Board Acknowledgement We gratefully acknowledge the generous funding for this project that was provided by The Saskatchewan Arts Board though an Arts Smarts Grant. ArtsSmarts Saskatchewan (now known as Artists in Schools) offers schools a chance to “enhance arts-related activities that are linked to educational outcomes through partnerships with professional artists. The aim of the program is to expand access to meaningful artistic activities, increase student engagement in learning, cultivate cross-disciplinary learning skills and attitudes, and foster a lifelong interest in the arts” www.saskartsboard.ca

On our trip to 8th St. Books & Comics, Pat Thomson provided students with a sense of the depth of talent to be found in Saskatoon. Comic book artists such as Tom Grummett, Elaine Will, Troy Nixey, and Riley Rossmo, allowed students to realize that they can be a successful artist here in the city. Pat proudly shared his passion for comics with the students, as well as some delicious cookies! 8th Street Books and Comics is your source to buy, sell and exchange used books. We carry thousands of fiction and non-fiction titles in a range of categories. Our comic section is state of the art and features titles from all the major publishing houses as well as small press and independent distributors. We stock over 4300 adult graphic nov-
els, approximately 300 titles for young readers as well as nearly 2000 manga graphic novels; all of which we sell based on the American price/ exchange, rather than at the posted Canadian. Every Wednesday we receive the latest in releases and our stock is always growing!

At Amazing stories, Jody Cason shared her vast knowledge of what it takes to create a black and white comic with depth and impact. She provided great visual examples and talked through all of the important aspects for creating an engaging story. Jody also informed students about how they could get more involved in the comic book community by submitting their artwork to the local publication of Punch magazine. There were several students who were immediately interested, so it was great for them to learn about this wonderful opportunity.
Amazing Stories has relocated once again! Since 1993, we have continued to expand our business to bring you the best comics, manga, t-shirts, statues, toys, magic, and more!
