Ash North Event ManagerWelcome to the inaugural Kitchen+Bath Show, where designers and industry professionals will meet to explore all things K&B.
As an industry group dedicated to kitchen and bathroom design, KBDi has long recognised the value of these spaces.
In June 2022, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) estimated that there were 10.9 million dwellings in Australia. New housing adds around two per cent to the existing stock each year, meaning we have over 11 million homes today and expect around 600,000 more new home builds between now and 2026.
The National Construction Code (NCC) requires that all dwellings be provided with ‘space and facilities for the preparation and cooking of food’ and ‘space and facilities for personal hygiene’, so it’s safe to say that all of these new dwellings have or will have a kitchen and at least one bathroom.
And then, of course, we have the renovation market. With 200,000+ homes set to be renovated over the next few years, the kitchen and bathroom industry is a healthy place to be. It’s a sector that offers many great opportunities for innovation and growth, and—let’s be honest—who doesn’t want a beautiful kitchen and bathroom?
We’re delighted to partner with a home-grown, stand-alone kitchen and bathroom show and can’t wait to see our design and manufacturing communities mingling with world-class suppliers over the next few days.
If you can appreciate the value of these spaces, we’d love to see you in the KBDi KItchen+Bath Lounge. Pop in and join us for a coffee today.

Australians have a long history of punching above their weight on the international stage, whether it’s on the sporting field, the arts or even the world of science. We’ve made great strides too, in design, with names such as Grant Featherston, Douglas Snelling and Marc Newson making their mark with original, highly functional furniture prized by collectors.
In interior design, from the legendary work of mid century interior designer Marion Hall Best to the likes of contemporaries such as Greg Natale and David Hicks, our small nation has inspired generation after generation of creatives and manufacturers to design beautiful, functional furniture, lighting and more.
But it hasn’t happened on its own. Indeed, as local businesses find themselves competing with cheaper imports, it has become increasingly challenging for some to remain profitable, despite the quality of their work.
Since its launch, Kanebridge Quarterly magazine has been a consistent supporter of Australian design and manufacturing. From single, dedicated craftspeople operating out of a small workshop to growing businesses taking orders from all over the country and the world, we’ve sought to showcase products (and producers) that demonstrate a commitment to craftsmanship, sustainability and excellence. Far from being a flag waving exercise, the support comes from a pragmatic position. In short, for anyone seeking the best, most bespoke products designed to meet local conditions, buying furniture, lighting, glassware, ceramics and more designed and made locally is just plain good sense.
To foster the next generation of designers, Kanebridge Quarterly magazine is sponsoring Australia’s Next Top Designer, The Design Show’s award program, to not only celebrate emerging designers, but provide them with practical support. This year, Kanebridge Quarterly magazine is awarding a cash prize of $10,000 to the winner to help them on their way to the next stage of their career. It’s a pleasure to be a partner at this event, which has fast become the premier awards program connecting designers with industry, to be privy to the work of some of our best and brightest designers as they too make their mark.
Attendees can also join us for a lively panel discussion on the rebirth of Australian Design with leading makers and designers lead by Kanebridge Quarterly Editor in Chief, Robyn Willis. It promises to be a great show.

Flexmirror Australia’s brief for the gallery space of Australia’s Next Top Designer asked exhibition design and build company, Mayd, to showcase finalists’ work in a way visitors would not have seen before. Highlighted in the brief were the new spatial opportunities available using Superbrilliant and Semitransparent mirrors and how these might connect to concepts presented in finalists’ work.
The quality and scale of Flexmirror has not been seen in the Australian market so the team wanted to create a completely new display space, giving Australian architects and designers a sense of the possibilities now available to them.
Mirrors and large-scale mirrored surfaces are usually thought of in context with the limitations created by glass mirrors or mirror-like panels. Flexmirror works outside of these parameters, allowing an opportunity to re-imagine how a distortion-free, near 100% reflective surface might be used within an interior.
Flexmirror foils allow an unmatched mirror size of up to 3m wide and 30m plus long. With this scale, crystal clear clarity, total weight less than 2kg per square metre and efficient onsite assembly, it’s fair to say the game is now changed for large scale interior mirrors.
Fortunately for Mayd, ample reference material was available to help understand the possibilities, with Flexmirror International having completed many landmark projects over the years: including Apple Flagship stores in Abu Dhabi and Orange County with Foster and Partners, installations with Olafur Eliasson at Tate Modern and Samsung Museum of Art, and retail installations for brands including Audi, Coca Cola, Samsung and Chanel.
Hand sketches started the design process, with Mayd illustrating the architecture, mirror scale and material possibilities. The team then consulted with Workshopped, who run the competition annually, to understand the long history of ANTD and the broad range of scale, colour and materiality within the ANTD finalist work. All elements were then considered within an immersive, expanded space of multiple viewpoints.
Signage for the space was able to be re-imagined, facilitated by two giant 5m x 2.5m semi-transparent mirrors, each backed by LED screens displaying content that seems to float within the mirrors. Creating a unique viewing experience that is not to be missed.
With finalist selection complete and materials confirmed, including an innovative 100% recycled plastic surface for the display tops, the team at Mayd refined the concept and crafted a series of 3D visuals to illustrate the final design.
Flexmirror and Workshopped are delighted with the result which promises an exciting platform for finalists’ work and a new experience for visitors to the 2024 edition of Design Show Australia in Sydney.
Flexmirror Australia’s team is located right next door at Stand 224 if you’d like to know more about the possibilities now available with these extraordinary large-scale mirrors. Or get in touch with matt@flexmirror.com.au.
"The idea of new possibilities is close to our hearts at Flexmirror and we are very proud to be supporting the next crop of emerging Australian designers through our sponsorship of Australia's Next Top Designer Awards."
- Matt Angus, Managing Director Flexmirror Australia

The design of the Design Talks Theatre space is an exploration of shape and form. The design started with the idea of simply stacking forms to create vertical elements that can be used as seating and walls.
The design has a ‘make do’ approach, in that it uses a very simple design language of stacking two different materials on top of each other. What appears simple is then pushed beyond what we know and the alternating materiality between the carpet and the foam provides soft and hard touchpoints for the human body.
At its core, this design is all about furniture and how furniture can inform and create space. We wanted to explore the threshold of where furniture can expand and become ‘furnitecture’.
The soft pillow-like forms are exaggerated and oversized to create a ‘pillowy’ aesthetic. The foam, supplied by Dunlop Foams, and carpet, supplied by EC Carpets, were strategically stacked on top of each other to raise up vertically and grow to become seats and walls. This design language was then translated across all other elements.
The design showcases new possibilities and knowledge of the qualities of foam and carpet.
Design Talks 2024 features a mixed program of panel discussions and presentations centring around two compelling pillars of Purposeful Design. The first emphasises the importance of intentionality in creating impactful and meaningful spaces. It invites participants to explore how thoughtful design decisions can shape environments that not only meet functional needs but also resonate on deeper levels, influencing experiences and fostering connections. The second focuses on nurturing value and purpose within the design industry, empowering designers for commercial success.
Craft, Innovation, And Human-Centred Design: Creating atmospheres with purpose
Designing purposeful spaces demands a delicate interplay between tradition and exploration, craftsmanship and innovation. This session will explore how to create atmospheres that resonate with meaning - whether that is a bespoke residence or a museum interior - with particular focus on the tactile and visual qualities of textures, materials and light.
