Make safety your business
With Safe Work Australia
Make safety your business this National Safe Work Month
No job should be unsafe. No workplace death, illness or injury is acceptable.
The impacts of work-related injuries and fatalities are far reaching, affecting individuals, families and the broader community. Safe Work Australia data indicates that in 2022, 195 workers in Australia were fatally injured at work, and 127,800 serious workers’ compensation claims were made (2021-2022p).
This year’s National Safe Work Month theme, safety is everyone’s business, calls on workplaces across the nation to make safety their business. This theme highlights the collective benefit of safe work practices to everyone in the workplace by reinforcing WHS as a fundamental principle and right.
This October, prioritise work health and safety, by making it your business. Making safety a priority and taking action to ensure your workplace is free of physical and psychological harm helps to keep workers safe. Every worker, across all industries and occupations, deserves to come home safe.
See the National Safe Work Month website (safeworkaustralia.gov.au/national-safe-work-month) to promote WHS in your workplace.
Download customisable resources, follow Safe Work Australia on social media and subscribe to the National Safe Work mailing list to get involved.

Random Noise: Measuring your company’s safety performance
Findings from numerous research studies around the world demonstrates that commonly used safety metrics like Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rates (TRIFR) and Lost Time Injury Rates (LTIFR) are completely subject to and influenced by random variables. This presentation will show how these metrics fail to accurately reflect an organization’s true safety performance. To accurately reflect on “safety” within an organisation, a shift towards more qualitative assessments and proactive safety management is required. This presentation will provide tangible guidance to assist with advocating for a more holistic, culture-focused approach to safety measurement.

All these accidents are avoidable and mainly occur due to a lack of planning and lack of awareness of the hazard. Rethinking Leadership: A systems approach to workplace wellbeing
In the world of workplace mental health and psychosocial risk management, experts consistently highlight the crucial role of leadership in overcoming challenges. This session will challenge the current practice of “leadership shaming” and instead present ideas on the systemic elements that shape enterprise level leadership impact – and why organisations need to take investment in their leadership systems to a whole new level.

Prioritising your safety investment
With SafetyCulture
Where are the best Health & Safety teams spending their time on improvements?
Today's frontline industries have rapidly evolved due to technological advancements, safety concerns, ESG commitments, labour shortages, and supply chain issues. Health and Safety teams are working to prime the frontline for long-term success amidst these changes.
A recent Verdantix study surveyed leading companies in frontline industries to uncover their investment priorities.
1. Doubling down on safety fundamentals
Addressing foundational safety concerns is a core focus for OHS teams. When polled on reducing serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs) came out on top (44%). Reporting is crucial for workplace safety:
‣ Start with psychological safety: Encourage open lines of communication. When employees feel comfortable consistently reporting near misses, minor mistakes, and first aid, providing essential data points to inform incident prevention.
‣ Simplify reporting workflows: Teams can easily make anonymous reports using QR codes, helping to eliminate under-reporting. Providing an audit trail for each issue, allowing real-time collaboration to resolve problems.
2. Curating top-tier training
Workplace training should focus on actual learning outcomes. Training offers benefits such as improved retention and increased productivity.
Consider ways you can tailor your training to get results, such as:
‣ Configure training the way your team works: Training on the SafetyCulture platform is accessible on any device, allowing for upskilling opportunities for everyone, regardless of location.
‣ Focus on hyper-specific courses: Focus on creating microlearning courses on relevant content for teams.
‣ Link training and performance: Turn insights into action with the SafetyCulure platform. From Analytics, spot trends in failed items, then generate a course to bridge the demonstrated knowledge gaps in just a few clicks.
3. Watching out for our most vulnerable workers
Improving management and visibility of hazards faced by contractors and lone workers is crucial, and emerging technology is playing a key role in addressing these challenges.
‣ Vehicle telematics: provide real-time updates on location, performance, usage, and speed for improved driver safety and vehicle usage.
‣ Seamless contractor management: With SafetyCulture documentation, Check-in and onboarding is done on one platform.
‣ Personal safety devices: Cloud-based technology like SHEQSY allows managers to monitor and communicate with remote workers efficiently, using features like GPS tracking, emergency alerts, and two-way communication.
4. Tapping into real-time data
Optimising siloed data blocks and creating a single knowledge repository are needed for ESG compliance, removing paper-based processes and legacy systems. So how can companies make use of real-time data to connect the dots?
‣ Sensors: Sensor-based data is especially useful for environmental compliance. They can also help avoid stock loss, keep teams safe, and avoid downtime.
‣ A single source of truth: Consolidating data through a single operations platform enables better decision-making with a comprehensive view of compliance, health and safety, and operational risk.
5. Experimenting with emerging technology
41% of respondents want to increase AI deployment through further integration or pilot projects.
How can teams leverage AI to address Health and Safety challenges?
‣ Predict safety risks: AI can analyse existing data to predict safety risks, improving risk management and promoting a proactive safety approach.
‣ Break down language barriers: Instant translation of key virtual documents and training materials can enhance accessibility.
‣ Answers and guidance: AI-powered knowledge enables in-the-moment answers to equip your frontline with the right information at their fingertips.
Focusing on these areas will foster a culture of improvement to shape safer and better working methods that will have exponential business benefits.

Engagement: The shining future of safety
With ecoPortal
Engagement is a key piece of the safety puzzle, and is an important asset to have across all levels of an organisation. That’s why it’s amazing that we’re currently seeing an increase in the desire of leaders, officers, and—to a smaller degree—directors, to be engaged in their health and safety system.
Engagement of leadership is absolutely critical to a strong safety culture. The more visible the leader is—the more they’re out there walking the walk—the better the outcomes are likely to be.
I’ve been noticing this trend in ecoPortal’s own client base through an increased demand from middle- to high-level senior managers for proactive lead indicator tools like safety observation templates, safety tours, leader walks, and safety conversations.
We offer those tools within the ecoPortal package of products, and their increased use makes me confident that we’re seeing a shift in the officers and the senior managers. These groups are no longer solely relying on the monthly board report or their monthly health and safety report; they’re getting more boots on the ground, which is the best way to engage.
Engagement isn’t about more Zoom calls. It’s not about more memos or more emails. It’s not about more posters up around the lunchroom. It’s about the officer going to the site, talking to the team, working to personally understand what worries a worker, and using tools to capture this information. It’s gathering the risks they wouldn’t catch being offsite, shared in informal conversations, that don’t have sufficient controls in place. Many leading indicators that should drive performance reviews, improvements, and monthly tracking can come from those records of proactive onsite conversations.
With some significant prosecutions underway, as well as some interesting new prosecutions coming up with individual directors or officers named or implicated, we’re only going to see more pressure from leaders to provide proactive health and safety support.
Empowering high-risk industries with comprehensive solutions
With Ideagen
Maintaining rigorous safety standards and navigating complex regulatory landscapes is one of many challenges organisations in high-risk industries face that can impact operational efficiency and safety. Ideagen, a global leader in compliance and safety technology, is revolutionising safety management in Australia through the digitisation of manual processes.
Safer workforces
Organisations in high-risk industries such as construction, mining and utilities often manage large workforces across multiple sites and ensuring every employee is trained, compliant and operating safely can be daunting. Ideagen Damstra’s enterprise protection platform (EPP) integrates workforce safety, site access and compliance into one streamlined system. Real-time tracking, access control and learning modules ensure every worker is qualified and aware of their responsibilities before entering hazardous environments.
Safer machines
The complicated legal obligations of those operating and supplying machinery can mean risk assessments are completed subjectively and inconsistently, risking efficiency and workers’ safety.
Ideagen Plant Assessor‘s machinery compliance engine (MCE) helps businesses identify machinery hazards and suggests control measures to ensure equipment is safe and complies with regulations.
Safer sites and improved HSEQ
Ensuring consistency and communication of HSEQ processes across sites can be problematic when dealing with onsite and remote workers, office workers and contractors.
Ideagen Lucidity is a cloud-based HSEQ management solution connecting on-the-ground workers with management teams, allowing them to record hazards, incidents and HSEQ and operational processes in one central location to monitor compliance, accountability and efficiency.
Simplified policies and procedures for highly regulated industries
Health care, aged care and education industries are subject to strict regulations requiring meticulous management of policies and procedures. Complying with these regulations and ensuring correct implementation of policies is a continuous challenge.
Ideagen CompliSpace centralises and automates the governance and updating of policies and procedures, ensuring organisations stay on top of regulatory changes and maintain compliance.
Collaboration and information management
Efficient collaboration and information management are crucial for maintaining productivity. Ideagen OnePlace and Ideagen Op Central provide robust solutions to manage communication across teams.
Ideagen OnePlace enhances user engagement with Microsoft 365 platforms, simplifying document and email management, ensuring critical information is easily accessible.
For organisations and franchises operating across multiple sites, Ideagen Op Central’s comprehensive platform manages operations, multi-site communication, training and compliance. Its AI-powered tools facilitate seamless operations, ensuring all sites adhere to the same standards and key information is shared effectively.

Driving safety through behavioural change
With PBF Australia
The Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) presentation by PBF Australia (Spotlight Stage, Day 2, 10am) emphasises individual responsibility’s critical role in fostering a safety culture, particularly on the roads. As a comprehensive safety initiative, BBS centres around the idea that safety is not merely a set of rules to follow but a core life value that requires constant awareness and proactive behaviour.
Safety: A Core Life Value
The presentation underscores that safety is intrinsically linked to our core values—family, health, financial stability, and freedom. It stresses that safety is not just about preventing accidents; it’s about preserving the things that matter most in life. Whether driving, at home, or at work, the decisions we make every day have far-reaching consequences.
The Fatal 5: Key Risk Factors - Five major factors contributing to road trauma, known as the “Fatal 5”:
‣ Speeding: Excessive speed increases the likelihood of accidents and the severity of their outcomes.
‣ Seatbelt Usage: The wrong or non-use of seatbelts remains a significant issue, leading to preventable injuries and fatalities.
‣ Substance Impairment: Driving under the influence of drugs, medication, or alcohol severely impairs judgment and reaction times.
‣ Distraction: Mobile phones and other distractions, such as smart watches, significantly increase the risk of accidents.
‣ Fatigue: Driving while tired impairs cognitive functions, making accidents more likely.
Influencing Positive Behaviour
The presentation encourages individuals to reflect on their driving habits and identify areas where they can improve. By focusing on the Fatal 5, the presentation suggests practical ways to change behaviour, such as planning trips to avoid fatigue, securing children and pets, and using technology responsibly.
Real-Life Impact
Through real-life stories, the presentation illustrates the devastating consequences of unsafe behaviours on the road. These narratives serve as powerful reminders that safety is not just about compliance with the law but about protecting lives, including those of our loved ones.
Supporting PBF Australia
The presentation concludes with a call to action, encouraging the audience to support PBF Australia. This can be done through individual or corporate memberships, donations to the Gifting Fund, or simply by spreading the word about the importance of road safety. PBF Australia’s mission is to prevent injuries and promote safety, and community support is vital to achieving these goals.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Behaviour-Based Safety serves as a powerful reminder that safety is everyone’s responsibility. By understanding the factors that contribute to road trauma, taking ownership of our behaviours, and modelling positive actions, we can make a significant difference in reducing accidents and saving lives. The presentation leaves the audience with a clear message: safety is not just a set of rules—it’s a way of life that requires ongoing commitment and awareness

Learning in the ‘Flow of Work’
With HSE Global
Building a Future-Ready Workforce Through ‘Learning In the Flow-of-Work’.
In today’s fast-paced business environment, developing a Future-Ready workforce is crucial. Traditional training methods are often insufficient, especially with the rise of remote work, lean operations, and the need for rapid upskilling and reskilling. The solution lies in “learning in the flow of work,” integrating learning directly into employees’ daily activities. This approach aligns skill development with real job requirements, promoting continuous learning and adaptability, meeting the demands of the modern business environment.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report notes that about 40% of workers will require reskilling within six months, and 94% of business leaders expect employees to learn new skills on the job. Integrating learning into daily work is increasingly vital, and this approach lays the foundations for measuring learning impact and ROI.
Learning in the flow of work is what people want. LinkedIn conducted a survey involving over 4,000 L&D and business professionals to explore how workplace learning can be enhanced (LinkedIn Learning, 2018). The top challenge identified was a lack of time, with most respondents citing “getting employees to make more time for learning” as their primary concern. Additionally, among the learners surveyed, 58% expressed a preference for learning at their own pace, while 49% favoured integrating learning into their daily work activities.
Learning in the flow of work enhances learning efficiency. Learning integrated into the workflow allows employees to apply new skills immediately, creating a more efficient and engaging learning experience (Bersin & Zao-Saunders, 2019). Everyday work presents numerous opportunities to learn and apply learning, encouraging a community of learning where colleagues contribute actively, expertly, and kindly.
In-work development opportunities increase staff retention, internal mobility and skill retention. According to McKinsey & Company (2023), 80% of job changes involve moving to new employers. Redeployment within organizations allows employees to apply learning directly in their roles, leading to more effective skill utilization.
Customised Learning Solutions to Unlock Capability: Training should be customised and personalized to accommodate diverse learning styles and roles within an organisation. Tailoring learning experiences to address the specific needs of both employees and the organization enables adaptive solutions to unlock the organization’s capability.
Employee development is a critical factor in organisational success. According to Gallup research (Desimone, 2019), organizations investing in employee development report 11% greater profitability and are twice as likely to retain employees. When learning is tied to job tasks, employees are more engaged and motivated, contributing to a dynamic work environment. Additionally, a study in late 2023 found that 47% of 1,013 EHS leaders identified skills gaps and low awareness as key challenges for advancing EHS programs (Focus Network, 2024 Global EHS Readiness Report).
In conclusion, ‘learning in the flow of work’ provides several key advantages over traditional training methods. It enhances employee engagement, improves knowledge retention, boosts skill application, and reduces downtime. This approach also promotes continuous improvement, which in turn drives greater productivity and profitability. By integrating learning into daily tasks, organisations can effectively measure the ROI. Embracing this method is a strategic move for organisations aiming to thrive in today’s fast-paced business environment.

Innovating in personal injury claims management
With EML Group
Providing a safe workplace isn’t just a legal requirement, it’s a commitment to your people’s health and wellbeing.
At EML Group (EML), we’ve been leading the way in personal injury claims management for over 110 years, continuously innovating to provide Australian businesses and government agencies with safety programs, tools and services to keep their people safe at work. Our dedication to improving outcomes for employers, injured workers and communities is reflected in the $142 million investment Employers Mutual Limited has made to develop market leading products, resources and tools for employers, injured workers, and communities.
Workplace fatalities and serious injuries impact not only workers, but their colleagues, families and broader communities. Every year workers lose their lives in Australian workplaces. Tragically, 173 workers lost their lives in 2023. Whilst definitions vary between states, industrial manslaughter legislation allows both corporations and individuals to be charged for negligence or breach of duty when a death occurs.
The prevalence of psychological conditions arising from work also remains significant. Amendments to the WHS Regulations to workers’ psychological health and safety has reignited the priority for businesses to identify and
manage psychological hazards. There is a critical need for Australian businesses to invest in comprehensive risk management practices to safeguard their people. Without the right systems and support, many businesses struggle to meet the ever-changing safety regulations and compliance requirements at federal and state level.
At this year’s Workplace Health and Safety Show, we’re excited to showcase how EML’s innovative solutions can transform your approach to workplace safety and injury management.
EML is here to help your business with your safety management requirements. As a leading personal injury claims provider in Australia and through the Mutual Benefits Program, we offer EML customers with access to a range of valuable offerings:
‣ Employer Training Program: In 2024, we’re proud to offer customers an extensive program of over 90 free training events, presented by both in-house experts and external specialists. Sessions are presented virtually and in person to outline the latest trends in injury prevention, injury management and workers compensation. Topics include safety management, hazard identification, risk assessment and controls and psychosocial hazard identification and risk management. Rated 4.8/5 stars by participants, our training program is designed to support the professional development and education needs within your health and safety team.

Out with the old: Why traditional hiring methods might be costing you more and how data-driven assessments are the future
With Fitworker360
Hi, I’m Guy Terkelsen. As a physiotherapist for over a decade, I’ve spent years helping people recover and get back to work. However, I realised that my role often came into play too late in the process - after injuries had occurred. This insight led me to explore ways to prevent such issues from arising in the first place, which eventually brought me to FitWorker360.
Let me share why traditional hiring methods might be holding your business back and how our innovative approach can turn things around.
Why Traditional Screening Methods Fall Short
In my experience, traditional pre-employment screening methods fall short of what modern businesses truly need. Think about it: physical tests, gut-feeling interviews, and reference checks from candidates themselves. Sure, these practices have been around for years, but they often miss the mark when it comes to finding the right fit for your team and your company culture.
One of the significant challenges with these outdated methods is the risk of hiring individuals who may not be a good fit, leading to lower job performance and higher turnover rates. Furthermore, studies have shown that one in three workplace injury claims result from reactivating a previous injury. Traditional screening often overlooks this critical factor, leaving businesses exposed to unnecessary costs and risks.
How Data- Driven Assessments Address These Challenges
I discovered FitWorker360 after facing my own hiring challenges in my allied health business. I simply needed a smarter way to screen candidates. FitWorker360 offers a comprehensive, data-driven approach that goes beyond traditional methods. The platform allows our clients to upload job roles to the portal, where candidates complete a thorough assessment evaluating their physical, mental, and behavioural suitability for the role.
If necessary, candidates can be triaged to a 100% online physical assessment. With an average turnaround time of just 22 hours, FitWorker360’s mental and behavioural assessments can be completed from anywhere in Australia and New Zealand. This rapid and flexible approach enables businesses to make well-informed hiring decisions swiftly.
Real-World Impact: Success Stories
The impact of FitWorker360’s approach is evident in our success stories. One notable example is our work with Sydney Adventist Hospital, the largest not-for-profit hospital in New South Wales. By integrating FitWorker360 into their hiring process, the hospital achieved a 50% reduction in workers’ compensation premiums and a 55% decrease in their Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR) over five years. These results highlight how our platform can significantly reduce costs and improve workplace safety.
The Industries Seeing the Benefits
While FitWorker360 has traditionally been utilised in the health and aged care sectors, we’re now seeing increasing interest from the retail and labor hire sectors. Businesses across these industries are recognising the value of our data-driven assessments in reducing turnover and minimising injury claims.
What I find most exciting about FitWorker360 is the chance to help organisations save big on insurance premiums. One of our larger clients saved $900,000 through our platform. I often think about how those savings could be reinvested into employee wellbeing, innovation, or business growth. Seeing these positive changes is what makes my work truly fulfilling.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Workplace Safety
It has been interesting to see the landscape of workplace safety, and therefore hiring, evolve over the years. At the WHS Show in Melbourne, it was clear to me that more organisations are looking to fulfill their obligations to the Psychosocial Hazard Code. FitWorker360 is ready to lead the way, offering assessments that pinpoint where candidates might need extra support to excel in their roles. This helps create a safer and more productive workplace for everyone.
The shift from traditional pre-employment screening methods to a data-driven approach is not just a trend - it’s a necessary evolution in today’s competitive and complex business environment. FitWorker360 is at the forefront of this change, providing businesses with the tools they need to make smarter hiring decisions and create a safer, more effective workplace. By embracing these innovative assessments, companies can address the challenges of traditional methods and build stronger, more resilient teams. I’m also thrilled to be back at the WHS Show in Sydney for the second time! This year, I’ll be speaking on this very topic, sharing insights on how our data-driven approach can transform your hiring process and improve workplace safety. Come by our stand, say hello, and let’s chat about how FitWorker360 can make a difference for your organisation. See you there!
“FitWorker360 offers a comprehensive, data-driven approach that goes beyond traditional methods...This rapid and flexible approach enables businesses to make well-informed hiring decisions swiftly.

Looking after tradie wellbeing
With Steel Blue
Steel Blue celebrates success of the 10-year partnership with Beyond Blue.
Steel Blue and Beyond Blue have been helping boot the blues to support tradies mental wellbeing on and offsite through the blue boots initiative, raising over $450,000.
Over the 10-year partnership, funds raised through the initiative have enable 8,750 people to receive support through Beyond Blue 24/7 Support Service.
Looking after tradie physical and mental wellbeing is core to Steel Blue’s In Our Stride CSR initiative. To further support tradie wellbeing, Steel Blue conducts an annual tradie survey, in conjunction with Beyond Blue and the Australian Physiotherapy Association.
“Through the Steel Blue Boot the Blues tradie survey, we found that 1 in 5 tradies wouldn’t tell anyone if they had depression. We are also seeing the negative impact the labour shortage is having on tradies mental health,” said Georgie Harman, CEO Beyond Blue.
“The results show us how important the blue boots initiative is, to get tradies talking about their mental wellbeing or to encourage them to check-in on a mate. We want people to know there is support there for them, and initiatives like this encourage tradies to seek help when they start to feel flat, overwhelmed, or are stressed, by talking to Beyond Blue, their GP, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and other support services,”
Ms Harman said.
Concerningly, the majority of respondents did not know of or didn’t have workplace programs for physical wellbeing.
“The partnership is more than a donation, it is part of Steel Blue’s DNA,” said Peter Bell, CEO Steel Blue.
“The iconic blue boots help start a conversation on site and we believe over the last 10 years, we estimate that over 1 million conversations and check-ins on a mate have started at various workplaces throughout Australia to proactively address mental health issues.”
Key Findings
1. A fifth of respondents said they would not tell anyone if they had depression. Approx. 35% agreed or strongly agreed that most people would not employ someone they knew had been depressed, however only around 5% of respondents said that they would not hire someone they knew had been depressed.
2. 1 in 2 respondents said that skills shortages had impacted their mental wellbeing.
3. A majority of respondents did not know or said ‘none’ for programs their workplace has implemented for physical wellbeing.
4. The most common source of support for respondents is a family member or friend and their GP is the most accessed professional source of support.
5. Workplace injury incidence is high, with a significant impact on time taken off work.
a.Almost 30% being injured at work
b. More than 35% of those who had been injured had more than 3 months off.
6. This shows the strong links between poor mental health, poor physical health and loss of income.

Software solutions for injury management
With HSI Donesafe
Latest research into Australian Injury Management underscores the importance of adopting the right software solutions to drive effective injury management within organisations.
The 2024 GERI Report - The Australian Injury Prevention State of Play, which was released at the Comcare National Conference, highlights significant gaps in current practices, particularly regarding the adoption of unified systems and the role of technology in fostering collaboration between safety and injury functions.
According to the latest findings, only 14% of Australian organisations have fully integrated their Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and injury management functions. This lack of integration is often due to technology fragmentation, communication silos, and differing management priorities. Such barriers have inhibited collaboration between safety and injury functions, which is crucial for improving overall injury management outcomes.
Improved Adoption and Engagement through Technology
One of the critical insights from the research is the low level of engagement and adoption of new injury management technologies. Only 38% of respondents rated their adoption of new EHS and injury management technologies as good or excellent. This figure underscores the need for more effective solutions that can seamlessly integrate into existing workflows and encourage greater stakeholder participation.
The report also reveals that increased stakeholder engagement with both injury management and broader EHS programs typically leads to better outcomes. However, many organisations struggle with low engagement levels, particularly in injury management programs. Only 5% of respondents reported that their employees are highly engaged with these programs, a significant challenge that organisations must address to improve injury prevention.
Driving Collaboration between Safety and Injury Functions
The convergence of injury management and broader EHS functions is seen as a key factor in enhancing collaboration and improving outcomes. The study found that integrating these functions can significantly reduce administrative burdens, improve data accuracy, and
enable faster response times to incidents. It allows for a holistic approach to risk management, where data from various functions can be combined to prevent injuries and ensure a rapid return to work when they do occur.
Choosing the right software provider is critical
As the report suggests, to maximise injury prevention you must have the right software in place to support your organisation.
If reducing risks, minimising injury and providing the safest workplace is your priority, HSI Donesafe’s market leading software can help your team connect data, collaborate, and quickly identify your injury risks. Fingerprint drug testing With Intelligent Bio Solutions
Organisations across various industries invest in creating safe work environments to comply with Australian work health and safety (WHS) laws and ensure productivity and employee well-being.
Verifying employees’ capability is especially crucial in industries like construction, manufacturing, mining, logistics, and transportation. Traditional drug testing methods have limitations, and as workplace safety concerns evolve, methods for ensuring employee fitness for duty must also evolve.
Understanding Fingerprint Drug Testing
Fingerprint drug testing analyses sweat from the fingertips to detect drugs like cannabis, opiates, cocaine, and methamphetamine. It provides rapid results for timely decisions about an employee’s impairment, with a detection window of only 16 hours. Sweat naturally contains drug metabolites, making it a constant and accessible source for detection. The Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Screening System comprises two components: the Cartridge for collecting the sweat sample, and the DSR-Plus Reader for analysis. It’s a compact and portable system suitable for various workplace settings.
Advantages of Fingerprint Drug Testing
‣ Save Costs: The Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Screening System allows organisations to bring drug testing in-house and eliminate the need for specialised staff or facilities. The system’s portability allows on-site testing at any time and location, minimising downtime and improving operational efficiency.
‣ Non-Invasive: Unlike urine, saliva, or blood tests, which can be unhygienic, uncomfortable and require specialist staff or facilities, fingerprint testing is less intrusive for the employee and administrator.
‣ Increase Efficiency: Fingerprint drug screening batch-testing capabilities allow for rapid sample collection, providing drug screening results in minutes. This fast turnaround time and the system’s in-house portability enable employers to make immediate decisions regarding an employee’s fitness for duty.
‣ Secure and Tamper-Resistant: Traditional drug tests require private facilities, making them susceptible to tampering. Fingerprint testing prevents adulteration and maintains sample integrity through administrator-supervised testing and self-locking sample seals.
‣ Identify Current Impairment: The Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Screening System’s 16hour detection window aims to identify current impairment rather than past use, giving employers a more accurate assessment of whether an individual is fit for duty. Traditional tests often detect drug use that may have occurred days or even weeks prior without providing insight into an employee’s current state.
In fast-paced work environments, tools for employee fitness for duty must support efficiency, productivity, and wellbeing. The Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Screening System offers a modern, portable, and cost-effective solution for workplace drug testing, combining speed, convenience, and reliability. Innovative approaches like fingerprint drug testing will be increasingly important in maintaining a safe work environment as health and safety challenges evolve.

WashDrones clean The Dome
WashDrones exclusive at Workplace Health & Safety Show, Sydney Showgrounds
Workplace Health & Safety Show Sydney attendees will get an exclusive opportunity to view WashDrones cleaning the 30-foot Dome at Sydney Showground.
The demonstration is a first for this free-to-attend Workplace Health & Safety Show, and according to Stephen Blackie, Portfolio Manager of the Show, it’ll be the only live demo of this technology in Australia – an event not to be missed.
In addition, the demonstration will introduce cuttingedge drone technology to the local market, presenting a cost-effective, time efficient and safe solution to enable cleaning at height. “The safety benefits of this technology are significant, and this is why we have partnered with WashDrones – an Australian supplier of wash drone systems and services. Their demo is a great opportunity for safety officers, maintenance and cleaning professionals and business owners to view the drones in action, and chat to the WashDrones team about interventions that save lives while improving efficiency”.
Exterior cleaning and window washing remain highly risky tasks. In fact, falls from height are responsible for 9% of workplace fatalities and for 3.5% of injuries (according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics). “With the introduction of new manslaughter laws that penalise businesses for neglecting to safeguard employees companies cannot afford not to invest in solutions that keep workers out of harm’s way, explains Stephen. “Besides making regulatory compliance easier, WashDrones also address other workplace health and safety challenges, including the shortage of staff with the appropriate working at heights tickets, as well as the costs associated with traditional heights cleaning”.
A simple but effective solution for a multitude of applications
The drones used in data collection and aerial surveys, for example, can be quite complex. But the WashDrone is straightforward: The drone takes a hose to height and carries out pressure washing and cleaning – more safely and efficiently than other methods.
Paul New, Managing Director of WashDrones, emphasises that an Elevating Work Platform (EWP) or scissor lifts as a tool have a maximum wind speed rating of 10km/h (2.5 m/s meters per second) is allowed at its highest operational point. In the rope access industry, standard practice dictates no climbing and staying below wind speeds of 18km/h (5 m/s) for sector-specific activities. On the other hand, a drone can be monitored to operate in winds up to 30 km/h, with the ability to handle gusts up to 45 km/h, though careful monitoring is crucial in such conditions and dependent on assets/location.
“Ambient temperatures are also a consideration. In outside temperatures of 35 degrees, human-enabled methodologies must be shut down. A drone can carry on working. It’s an amazing tool to minimise downtime,” he says.
“The WashDrone is 85% faster than any other methodology on the market,” explains Paul. It’s particularly beneficial for industries like manufacturing and mining, reducing downtime and offering efficient cleaning for high-up areas such as maritime vessels, bridges, and towers.”
Paul mentioned that the response to the wash drone solution in local industries has been varied. The company has met with people involved in maritime projects, super yacht owners, rail and facades, and solar installations. Most people don’t realize that solar panel installations must be cleaned twice a year, and many don’t clean them at all due to a lack of thought and investment in the critical platforms enabling access for cleaning.
Complete service and support
Wash drones were accredited by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as a new category of drone in December 2023, enabling a new methodology for cleaning exteriors at heights. The wash drones are rated and able to carry out high pressure washing, using pressure of up to 3500 PSI, and lower for softwash applications.
“The drone’s ability to handle the recoil of the PSI fluctuation as the solution or the water, or a combination of the two is delivered at height, is the engineering wizardry of this tech,” notes Paul.
“Low awareness of the technology is the biggest obstacle. We need to educate audiences that this technology is real, and it’s being used in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the Middle East, Europe and the USA. There are aviation frameworks to be considered, as well as ticket and licence requirements, and training. We can help with all of that,” says Paul.
WashDrones caters to contractors and outsourced cleaning operators, as well as companies needing to train their own maintenance and cleaning staff. “We provide everything drones - consultation, training, equipment, insurance, service and even financing,” elaborates Paul.
The WashDrone comes with a 2 year-warranty – one from the manufacturer and one from WashDrones itself. An annual service is required to extend the second year of warranty.
“We’re really looking forward to Workplace Health & Safety Show Sydney, where live demonstrations of our drones in action will be a sure eye-catcher. We will be cleaning areas that are hard to access. We’ll also be at stand B02 in the exhibition area, where our team will be available to chat with visitors about the potential for our drones to be applied to their industry”.
“The WashDrone is 85 per cent faster than any other methodology on the market.

The future of health & safety: Adapting to evolving expectations and technology in a rapidly changing world
With ServiceNow
The world of health and safety is evolving quicker than we have ever seen. Technology is adapting and evolving at an even quicker pace. People are changing too, and their expectations are different from what they once were, even just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
So, how do we as Health & Safety professionals keep up with dynamic employee expectations, new laws and regulations, maintain a strong emphasis on well-being and inclusion, the need to manage multiple technology tools to safeguard our organisations—and of course, our employees?
Let’s drill down a little further.
Several key factors are driving this rapid evolution in the Health & Safety space:
‣ Changing Work Environments: Thanks to everyone’s favourite pandemic, the world was forced into remote work (where applicable). This changed everyone’s perspective on work-life balance and flexibility and introduced more hybrid working schedules. For us safety professionals, however, hybrid work brings new challenges and risks that some may not have experienced before.
‣ Regulatory Changes: Recently, updates to compliance and safety regulations have pushed us toward a more holistic approach that focuses on well-being and inclusivity. Examples include The WHS Amendment (Review) Act 2020 in New South Wales including stricter requirements around psychological health and hazards, the Bill C-65, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code to strengthen protections against workplace harassment and violence, and UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) increasing its emphasis on mental health in the workplace.
‣ Increased Advocacy and Expectations: As younger generations become the predominant workforce, there is a noticeable increase in expectations for holistic safety. These generations, especially as they step into leadership roles are starting to advocate for better practices and more services to support wellbeing.
‣ Technology: Tech is really the key tool in our toolkit for ensuring we have the data insights needed to understand trends and identify issues that require action and even begin to predict issues before they become just that. The days of multiple-point solutions that do not communicate with each other and work in siloed manners are over in this safety revolution. It is time to empower employees to self-serve safety and automate processes for safety teams to streamline operations and make data-driven decisions.
We have already mentioned employee expectations—is it really that significant?
The modern employee is influencing Workplace Health & Safety, and it’s great to see more companies investing in their people. Prioritizing well-being leads to better performance, productivity, and innovation. Offering simple services like EAP access, company discounts, workshops, and flexible work arrangements shows employees that their well-being is valued.
Younger generations, like Gen Z, are tech-dependent. Employers need to invest in accessible and convenient employee and safety technology and solutions. This involves promoting a reporting culture and providing easy access to policies and procedures. In case of injury, employees should have a seamless experience, with clear communication and support throughout their employment journey.
Real-life Scenarios, Challenges and Solutions
In the technology space, we spend majority of our time developing our Health & Safety solutions with our product directors, based on the use cases and problems our clients are facing. Let’s look at some of these use cases:
Public Sector Client:
‣ Issue: Bullying and employees going on psychological stress leave. No central location for data, with limited access to performance analytics to understand where the issues lie.
‣ Solution: Cross-departmental collaboration with our Health & Safety and HR solutions, providing a 360-degree view of employee journeys to see incidents/cases raised by or against them, allowing us to cross-reference before promotions or transfers to identify issues early. Performance analytics with leading indicators for early intervention.
High-Risk Client:
‣ Issue: Multiple siloed systems to manage Safety and injuries, no centralised location or one source of truth, leading to manual and tedious work for the safety team, and no collaboration across the organisation.
‣ Solution: Consolidation of multiple systems into one Health & Safety solution within the ServiceNow platform. Centralised location for all incidents, hazards, observations, and JSAs, with automatic actions sent to site leads for first-level investigations. Integration with HR, Payroll, and Legal for collaboration when someone is injured. Leading indicator dashboards for continuous safety performance.
Shaping the Future: Accelerating Workplace Health & Safety through Technology
Partners Technology is a powerful tool for connecting with employees and promoting health, safety, and well-being. AI can enhance this further with predictive intelligence and voice-activated issue reporting. Consultants with expertise in various industries play a crucial role in tailoring solutions to meet the unique needs of each business.
The future we envision is one where employees feel safe, empowered, and cared for, and where health and safety are integral to the organisational culture. The organisation of the future should not just be compliant but also a leader in safety innovation, with an engaged workforce actively improving workplace health and safety.
The future really is now.

Improving safety with cutting-edge video content
With Affirmer
Affirmer is an Australian owned and operated company that is deeply passionate about Workplace Health & Safety (WH&S) and risk management. Our mission is to create cutting-edge video content that makes safety, performance, and compliance accessible and straightforward for businesses across all industries.
We leverage the latest technology including our highly acclaimed 3D animation to produce videos that are not only informative but also engaging, ensuring that the critical
messages about safety and compliance are effectively communicated and understood by all employees. By focusing on clarity and engagement, we help organizations foster a safer, more efficient, and more compliant work environment.
Studies on training have often shown that the most successful learning is sensory. As is commonly understood, many employees and contractors struggle to engage and learn from text heavy training or traditional methods. These methods struggle to keep the attention of employees, leading to gaps in knowledge retention and, ultimately, increased risks in the workplace. We typically transform thousands of words in policies or company materials into concise videos which demonstrates most simply and quickly through visual and audio learning the ‘what’, ‘how’, and ‘why’ of safety and compliance. These videos can be delivered over any learning platform on any device. Learning becomes much faster, more convenient, more cost effective, and more effective.
Core to our videos’ effectiveness are a number of key values:
Firstly, they are all customised to your business. We recognise that every business has unique risks and challenges, and a one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn’t work when it comes to WH&S and risk management. We fundamentally believe with learning material that ‘you only keep workers safe if it’s yours’. We use either realistic 3D animation or onsite HD film to capture your procedures, your work environment, and your equipment.
This personalised approach ensures that the training and communication materials we produce are directly relevant to your employees and other stakeholders, increasing the likelihood that they will engage with the learning and retain the critical information presented.
Secondly, we also encourage microlearning, where quality content is delivered in short, focused bursts, making it easier for employees to absorb and retain the critical information they need to stay safe and compliant. Simply short videos promote better concentration, easier understanding, and develop stronger memory cues.
Thirdly, our content is delivered through a variety of mediums, each designed to maximize impact suitable to the knowledge being communicated. Whether it’s our acclaimed realistic 3D animation or onsite High-Definition Video, Affirmer provides transformative learning and communication tools that support your risk management and WH&S objectives. The use of realistic 3D animation allows us to recreate complex scenarios and environments, giving employees a clear understanding of the risks and procedures associated with their specific roles. On the other hand, onsite High-Definition Video captures real-life scenarios and practices, making the training even more relatable and effective.
And finally, video content can play many roles in the learning path for WH&S. In addition to providing the core learning, we find we also create videos that can be used as prereads for in person training to assess what is the common issues or standard or knowledge prior to a training session; they are also often used as an efficient periodical refresher for knowledge checks; used to share incident learnings including EU’s by recreating in 3d animation serious incidents; explainer manuals; and even pre employment knowledge checks.
We firmly believe that the delivery of engaging communication and knowledge across an organisation is a powerful tool. It can significantly contribute to removing risks, enhancing value for all stakeholders, reducing operational costs, improving overall performance, and motivating employees. When employees are well-informed and engaged, they are more likely to follow safety protocols and contribute to a culture of safety within the organisation. This, in turn, leads to fewer accidents, less downtime, and a more productive workforce.

Essential workplace first aid
With Aero Healthcare
Maintaining a safe working environment is not just a legal obligation—it’s the foundation of a thriving and sustainable business. Whether you’re managing a corporate office or a high-risk manufacturing facility, understanding and implementing effective first aid measures is crucial.
Let’s explore some essential steps every workplace should take to ensure they are equipped to handle emergencies, protect their employees, and ultimately, safeguard their business’s future.
Maintaining a safe working environment is critical for the safety and well-being of everyone. While some workplaces inherently carry higher risks—think bustling factories versus quiet offices—no workplace is entirely free from hazards. Under Safe Work Australia’s guidelines, it is a legal requirement that every workplace ensures the provision of first aid equipment and has fully trained staff ready to handle emergencies. Don’t wait until it’s too late; assess your first aid protocols today.
All Workers Must Have Access to a First Aid Kit
Every workplace must provide at least one first aid kit, equipped for a range of injuries such as cuts, burns, fractures, and more. Tailor the contents based on your workplace’s specific risks, particularly in environments with chemical handling or where eye injuries are a concern.
First Aid Kit Location in the Workplace
Quick access to a first aid kit can make all the difference in an emergency. Kits should be prominently placed in easily accessible areas, with additional kits in high-risk zones like laboratories or workshops. Portable kits should also be available in vehicles for mobile workers, ensuring safety on the go.
First Aid Kit Maintenance Requirements
A first aid kit is only as effective as its contents. Aero Healthcare offers two first aid maintenance solutions:
Managed Program: Ideal for high-risk industries, our partners visit your site to ensure kits are fully stocked and compliant.
Self-Managed Program: Aero Healthcare’s Surefill™ system simplifies compliance with its refill pouches, guaranteeing your kit is always ready.
Selecting the Best First Aid Kit for Your Organisation
To ensure your first aid kit is up to the task, start by conducting a thorough risk assessment. This will clarify the specific risks your kit must address. At Aero Healthcare, we adhere to Safe Work Australia’s guidelines, offering prepacked kits designed to meet these standards, so you can be confident your first aid kit is ready for action.
What to include in your first aid kit
The contents of your first aid kit should be guided by the risks identified in your assessment. Aero Healthcare’s kits are equipped to handle various injuries, from minor cuts to severe burns, ensuring comprehensive coverage for your workplace.
Other First Aid Equipment for the Workplace
Providing additional first aid equipment, such as Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), can significantly reduce the risk of fatality from cardiac arrest. AEDs should be centrally located, clearly signed, and maintained per manufacturer guidelines. Emergency eye wash and shower equipment should also be readily available in workplaces handling hazardous materials.
Investing in comprehensive first aid measures is more than just ticking a box for compliance; it’s a commitment to the well-being of your workforce and the long-term success of your business. By carefully selecting the right first aid, maintaining it diligently, and ensuring all workers are prepared for emergencies, you create a safer, more resilient workplace. Remember, the steps you take today can make all the difference tomorrow. Don’t wait for an accident to happen—be proactive in creating a safe environment that supports your team’s health and your business’s growth.
Workplace Requirements
Low Risk Workplaces
One first aider for every 50 workers. A basic first aid kit is recommended for workplaces with 200 workers or more.
High Risk Workplaces
One first aider for every 25 workers. A basic first aid kit should be supplemented with additional equipment specific to the risks identified. A first aid room is recommended for workplaces with 100 workers or more.
Remote High Risk Workplaces
One first aider for every 10 workers. In addition to a basic first aid kit, ensure availability of specialised items such as heavy-duty crepe bandages for snake bites, thermal blankets for shock, and torches for visibility.

Training & investigation services for continuous improvement
With ICAM Australia
In recent years, workplace fatalities in Australia have shown a rising trend, as outlined by Safe Work Australia’s 2024 data*.
While the overall trend has shown a decline since 2007, there has been an uptick in the trend from its lowest point of 1.14 in 2019. With the highest rates of fatal incidents occurring in transport, postal and warehousing, agriculture, forestry and fishing, and construction. These deaths serve as a sobering reminder of the ongoing need for enhanced safety measures and risk management strategies needed across the country.
A key aspect of correcting this upwards trend is performing effective incident investigations that focus on identifying systemic issues, such as organisational factors and absent or failed defences allow for proactive mitigation and reactive learnings to reduce the risk of similar events.
ICAM Australia is dedicated to supporting organisations in this evolving safety landscape. Our Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM) focuses on uncovering the contributing
The ICAM process is divided into several key stages:
Immediate Response. This involves taking necessary emergency actions to contain and control the occurrences, safeguarding people and the environment.
Gathering Evidence. Investigators collect physical, documentary, and testimonial evidence, including photographs, documents, witness interviews, and more.
Organising Data. All data is reviewed and categorised into contributing or non-contributing factors and a timeline or sequence of events can be developed displaying three phases – the lead up to the incident, the incident and postincident recovery events.
Analysing Data. The contributing factors are analysed using ICAM’s systematic approach, focusing on categorising the contributing factors into four elements:
a. Absent or Failed Defences - the risk controls that did not prevent the incident or mitigate the occurrence.
b. Individual or Team Actions – those actions or decisions that led directly to the occurrence.
c. Task / Environmental Conditions - the conditions under which the actions or decisions took place (both in terms of the task and human factors); and
d. Organisational Factors - the systemic organisational issues that allowed the conditions to exist or go unchecked.
Identifying Corrective Actions. The analysis recommends specific actions to reduce risk which aim to prevent similar incidents, including changes in procedures, training, equipment or enhancements to risk management for example.
Reporting. A comprehensive report outlines the investigation’s findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Benefits of ICAM
Unveiling the Latent
Factors
• ICAM helps identify the underlying systemic issues. This leads to more effective risk reduction and preventative measures.
Improved Safety Culture
• By involving staff at various levels in the investigation, ICAM fosters a culture of shared responsibility for safety, leading to ongoing improvements.
Compliance
Many industries require systematic incident investigation as part of regulatory compliance. ICAM provides a structured approach that goes well beyond these requirements
The Incident Cause Analysis Method is vital for organisations seeking to enhance safety and efficiency. By digging deep and identifying all the underlying contributing factors to occurrences, ICAM provides insights beyond mere symptoms and helps organisations build a robust safety culture.
The adoption of ICAM reflects an organisation’s commitment to continuous improvement, not just in safety but also in overall operational excellence. Whether applied in manufacturing, mining, healthcare or any other field, ICAM stands as a beacon of safety enhancement that every organisation can gain benefits from.
ICAM Australia offers tailored training and investigation services, helping businesses to build a proactive safety culture that prioritises the identification and mitigation of potential hazards.
