L

egendary Super Bowl Champion and Emmy-nominated Fox NFL Sunday analyst Michael Strahan is the new co-host for ABC’s top-rated morning program, Good Morning America. Prior to joining the ranks of the top sports broadcasters in the country, Strahan’s entire 15-year football career was typified by the charisma and sportsmanship that made him a seven-time Pro-Bowler and one of only four players ever to lead the NFL in sacks for two seasons. Off the football field and talk-show set, Strahan is dedicated to many charitable works—volunteering for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the USO and Cedar Sinai’s HELP USA. Join Strahan at this afternoon’s Opening General Session and hear from the Pro Football Hall of Famer, talk show host, author and philanthropist. General Session Sponsored by

Growing your Business with Shareable Content

9 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Jonathan Perelman, Head of Digital Initiatives at ICM Partners, Former Executive at BuzzFeed & Google

H

ow do you stand out, rise above the noise and get your organization’s voice heard online? Having successfully guided the growth of digital businesses his entire career, Jonathan Perelman — the head of digital initiatives at ICM Partners and a former executive at BuzzFeed and Google — knows how to do it right. Perelman believes that “content is king but distribution is queen — and she wears the pants.” Pulling from his extensive experience at some of the world’s most suc-

cessful and influential brands, he shows audiences how to tell their story in a genuine, authentic and meaningful way that generates word-of-mouth marketing at Internet scale. With great energy and stage presence, he breaks down the tactics and mindset that propelled BuzzFeed from a small blog to a cultural phenomenon read by millions of people the world over (including the President of the United States). Perelman not only addresses how to create shareable, social content but also offers insights into how to maximize its reach and impact.

Game Changer Panel: Sharing Underused Assets – New Business Opportunities Emerging in Multifamily

U

ber, Airbnb, WeWork and ZipCar all change the “highest and best use” of fixed assets by increasing the pool of users for assets. Sharing apps enable greater profit potential to property owners from more users benefitting from the same assets. Developers in high-barrier markets are already planning to build specialty short-stay rental properties as a new hybrid property type. Within rental real estate, a new multifamily niche is at hand. This brainstorming session will dive into some of the startups that are responding to this new profit potential, and we will collectively brainstorm additional opportunities in property services, access control, reservations management, revenue management, parking, compliance, screening, insurance, concierge services and more. Everyone will come away with ideas for property investments, business creation and ways to extend existing platforms into this new niche.

Entrepreneurs (Clockwise from top left): Moderator: Steve Lefkovits, Partner, RealtyCom Partners and Co-Producer of MAXIMIZE: Multifamily Asset Management Conference; David Ordal, CEO of Everbooked, a revenue management tool for shared-stay listings; Alex Enchin, Founder of WhereIPark, an urban parking space sharing app that yields two rentals in one day; Jaja Jackson, Director of Multifamily Housing Partnerships, Airbnb; Diana Thai, Co-founder and President of Voyajoy, a stay facilitator; John Helm, Venture Partner, DN Capital and former founder and CEO of MyNewPlace.com, an apartment home rental website

From Courtesy to Competitive Necessity, Why Package Management Matters

Keeping an Eye on Smart Home Technology Is Smart

Google Me: Fostering an Innovative Company Culture

Smart Homes. The Internet of Things. The shared concepts and technology behind these buzzwords are very real. We may not have the same home technology as Bill Gates, but smart home technology IS here. It’s no longer only in movies or for millionaires. Home security, entertainment, comfort and more can be controlled from your mobile device or by simply walking into a room. Becoming more reliant on technology means big changes to the future of apartment living.

Private nap pods, company ski trips, a bikefriendly campus and free wheat grass shots aren’t the only reasons why Google has a cult following. The balance between work, family, friends, health and service is an ongoing priority for companies like Google who have honed in on the secret to creating motivated, loyal employees. Explore Google’s company culture and how the world of multifamily can benefit by joining our panel of experts across management, vendor and consultant silos.

Speakers: Pamela Darmofalski, LEED Green Associate, Director, National Accounts and Sustainability, Greystar; Gene LaNois, Head of Professional Channel, Nest; Sean Stadler, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, WDG Architecture, PLLC; Raymond van Beveren, Senior Vice President, CFLane; Clayton Burnett, Business Development, Internal Technology Trainer, Watchtower Security, Inc

Speakers: Tracy Bowers, Managing Director, Matrix Residential/Pollack Shores Real Estate Group; Audra Lamoon, Managing Director, Livewire Performance; Lee Bienstock, National Partnerships Manager, Google; Dana Pate, Director of Marketing, Pollack Shores, Matrix Residential

Consumers are expected to spend $334 billion online this year, leading to increases in package deliveries to apartments. With some properties fielding hundreds of packages every day, providing quick deliveries is more than a convenience, it’s a necessity. The alternative—deliveries to residents’ workplaces or stolen packages—won’t work. Explore the state of package management in apartment communities and lead a discussion about the future of this service as a competitive amenity. Speakers: Barry Hume, President and Cofounder, Package Concierge; Dean Holmes, Chief Operating Officer, Madison Apartment Group; Craig Meddin, CEO and Co-founder, The Postal Solutions Company

Newcomer Tips Welcome first-time NAA Education Conference attendees! Here are some helpful tips for making your experience even more enjoyable.

HOW DO I PLAN MY SCHEDULE? • The myNAA Planner is a convenient tool that enables you to plan ahead and determine which education sessions will provide the best return on investment. Create a schedule based on your own educational needs, and those of your company. • If you’re not already on Twitter, get on and follow the conference hashtag at #NAAEduConf. This will give you an insider’s view of what is trending before and during the meeting. • Download the myNAA Mobile App and have the conference information and schedule at your fingertips!

ARE THERE HELPFUL HINTS FOR NETWORKING? • Do you have a colleague attending the meeting? Ask them to take you under their wing and introduce you to fellow attendees. • Attend as many social events and receptions as you can. You’ll be rewarded with free food and cocktails! • If this is your first NAA Conference, take part in all Newcomer events being offered. • Show up for sessions early. You’ll score a great seat and have time to mingle with the other attendees around you. • Need a conversation starter? Ask an attendee how they liked a session you both attended.

WHAT SHOULD I DO ONSITE? • Attend the NAA Thursday Night Party tonight! This is a great, relaxing way to meet other attendees. • Be flexible with your conference schedule. The “law of motion and responsibility”—formerly known as the “law of two feet”— should apply: If a session is not working for you, leave (even if you are seated up front). Go to another session or meet up with others outside the session rooms who want to engage in other conversations and networking opportunities. • Smile, be open and enjoy yourself! This is going to be a great experience and you are going to meet some wonderful people.

T

he Keurig is brewing and your bagel just popped out of the toaster when the lights in the kitchen start blinking. The bus is five minutes away. Wait, what? At Grant Park Village, an apartment community in Portland, Ore., developed by Capstone Partners and managed by Greystar, residents are involved in a pilot program aimed to bring historically cost-prohibitive smart devices to apartments under a more affordable business model tailored for multifamily housing. “If you look at the current world of the Internet of Things, it’s smart home devices that are pretty damn expensive and hard to install,” says Sce Pike, CEO of IOTAS—a startup designed specifically for the apartment industry that shares 10 percent of its gross revenue with

the apartment owner. “You end up with the wrong price point and it doesn’t fit the business model for multifamily housing negotiations.” Inspired to fill that void, Pike partnered with Grant Park Village and deployed the smarthome technology in 100 of the community’s 210 units. In each of the participating apartments, all light switches, motion sensors and power outlets were outfitted with the technology. Using the program’s phone app, residents can select from 10 pre-programmed, habit-informed Smart Stories™ that pair common functions—such as turning the bathroom lights on or off based on the time of day and the resident’s daily routine. Integration with Amazon’s Echo is also happening in the very near future. This will allow residents who own Echo or

NAAPAC/BGF Silent Auction

Echo Dot the capability to send commands like: “Dim the lights to five” or, “Goodnight” will shut off all the lights in the apartment. Residents received the smart home technology at no additional cost for participating in the pilot program. Going forward, apartment managers have the option of including the system in the base rent or as a separate amenity, like utilities. Residents who opt out of the program still have a fully functional home—the technology is simply inactive. Blinking bus lights aren’t part of the package yet, but Pike says they’re the next step in an increasingly sophisticated world of technology that’s aimed to provide just the opposite for residents: More simplicity.
