The National Art School Public Programs offer an exciting range of short courses in visual arts from June to November 2015. We welcome you to the National Art School, a centre of excellence in fine arts education. Here you will meet a community of artists, alumni and students, who are passionate about art and enjoy the benefits of our highly-regarded courses, workshops, exhibitions, forums and studio facilities. Located in the historic Darlinghurst campus in the heart of Sydney, the National Art School offers a dynamic and supportive learning environment. The five-day Winter School in June is followed by the new Term Three Short Courses from July, the two-day Spring Weekend Workshops in September, five-day High School Holiday Workshops in September and Term Four Short Courses from October. Enrol in a National Art School short course and experience a unique, visual arts education with a studio-based, hands-on approach to learning. Be taught by eminent Australian artists in professional studios, receive one-to-one tuition and rigorous critiques, try new studio disciplines, learn practical techniques, discuss historical views and contemporary concepts, and gain the personal confidence to express your own visual language and unique style.

See the structure of the body demonstrated from the life model and the skeleton in every session, and give your life drawings a clear, solid foundation using the anatomical conceptions you acquire.

DRAWING Drawing, Materiality and the Tactile Michele Elliot Explore a range of experimental artmaking techniques to create tactile artworks that incorporate the elements of drawing and textile-based methods such as stitching, binding, knotting and layering. Painting Light Kim Spooner Do you want to know how to paint the atmospheric effects of light and mood? Learn how artists utilise basic tonal and colour theory to evoke romantic, realistic scenes and abstract fields of light. Create exciting sculptural forms from collected and discarded objects, and learn basic assemblage techniques such as screwing, gluing, riveting, modelling and joining. Anita Larkin shows you what makes a constructed sculpture more than just the sum of its parts, and how to create rich narratives by joining disparate objects together.

Are you time-poor and want to learn how to ‘see’ and take great photos? This five-day intensive course in digital DSLR photography will guide you away from your automatic settings and lead you through to the fundamentals of manual exposure. Glenn Lockitch teaches you how to achieve an accurate exposure and put your theoretical knowledge into practice, in the professional photographic studio and on-location.

Discover the mystery of bronze, from planning a sculpture to casting in bronze. Model a figurative sculpture in wax then make the ceramic shell casting, including sprueing the waxes, burning out the ceramic moulds, pouring metal, metal chasing and patina techniques.

Explore the medium of etching with a variety of tools and techniques. Learn to work with acid, hard-ground, soft-ground, drypoint, aquatints, chine collé and other techniques and acquire the skills to transfer your printing plates onto paper using a printing press.

Introduction to Colour, Composition and Collage Deborah Marks

Memory is a creative act, constructed through recollection and imagination. Learn how to use drawing to visually interpret different aspects of memories, using personal photographs and stories. Chelsea Lehmann introduces ideas and methods on how to interpret memories using the processes and materials of drawing.

Explore the highly creative realm of colour and collage, the art of visual composition and the principles of colour theory to discover the relationships between colours and stimulate your imagination. Develop your understanding of the formal aspects of colour including tone, saturation, hue, contrast and texture, and combine them with different compositional structures to make exciting collage works.

This one-day workshop teaches the skills required to create a professional portfolio that best articulates and presents your artwork. You will learn how to select a strong work sample, to photograph your artwork and to display the work with consistency. The day will focus on the creation of a classic printed portfolio for use in interviews and presentations, and will also investigate different creative strategies of display including publishing books, creating PowerPoint presentations and developing blogs and websites.

Exploring Colour Theory and Practice Pam Vaughan Develop your understanding of the expressive, symbolic and plastic qualities of colour with the theories of Bauhaus artist and educator, Johannes Itten, and then explore this in relation to your own art practice. Pam Vaughan leads you through a series of exercises based on Itten’s research and introduces you to the seven colour contrasts which consider hue, light and dark, cold and warm colours, complementary colours, simultaneous colours, colour saturation and extension. ceramics The Raku Experience Joseph Purtle Experience the exciting technique of Raku firing, a special process involving post-firing reduction which produces unpredictable flame marks and effects. Students will make a range of ceramic objects with different types of Raku clays both hand-built and wheel-thrown, and experiment with glazes, soluble salts and naked Raku slips. The NAS Gallery presents an annual program of exhibitions reflecting the vitality and complexity of contemporary visual art, as well as providing the School community with a physical and intellectual space for critical discussion and engagement. In 2015 NAS Gallery is showcasing a broad spectrum of visual arts practice by local and international artists.

The National Art School offers three fully accredited degree programs; the Bachelor of Fine Art, Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) and Master of Fine Art. With electives including Art History & Theory, Drawing, Ceramics, Painting, Printmaking, Photography and Sculpture, all programs of study entail a comprehensive investigation of studio practices and theoretical reflection, under the guidance of distinguished practising artists and art historians.
