The National Art School Public Programs present a diverse collection of high quality short courses and workshops in visual arts from June to October 2014.

The short courses and workshops are held in the dynamic and supportive environment of the National Art School’s historic site and contemporary campus, in innercity Darlinghurst, Sydney. The courses are open to people with all levels of experience; whether you are a newcomer to the visual arts, a continuing student, an art and design teacher or a practicing artist. Taught by eminent Australian artists in professional studios, the courses are designed to stimulate, inspire and enhance your skills whilst developing your personal visual language. WINTER SCHOOL Monday 30 June to Friday 4 July

An intensive week of stimulating arts courses held in the immersive learning environment of the Winter School. Specialist courses are offered in the studio disciplines of Ceramics, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture, and are taught by distinguished artist teachers, who share their knowledge and expertise through guided exercises, rigorous group critiques and one-toone tuition. A wonderful opportunity to work in an intimate, studio setting, learn new methods, materials and techniques, meet other artists and develop your imaginative faculties, inspiring you to create new artworks.

Printmaking Stone lithography: drawing to print Peter Lancaster Discover the exciting possibilities of drawing and printing from freshly grained Bavarian limestone, experimenting with direct mark-making that is not possible in any other print media.

SEMESTER TWO Evening and Saturday Short Courses Commencing 14 July

Semester Two offers a comprehensive selection of visual arts short courses which are run as weekly sessions in the evenings and on Saturdays. These courses give you the best start to your education in visual arts, enable you to experience the artistic community at the National Art School, join the library and attend our exhibition openings. You will be taught by practicing artists who teach in both the short courses and undergraduate programs with expertise in a wide range of studio disciplines. Drawing your visual language Pamela Vaughan This advanced drawing course explores a range of drawing media and compositional tools with the aim of encouraging participants to investigate their own personal visual language.

From drawing to mixed media Denis Clarke Experiment with wax, shellac, oil and chalk pastels, pen, wash and inks, acrylics and collage, as you put into practice the fundamental principles of tone, space, volume, colour and light.

Drawing fundamentals for beginners Rachel Fairfax Learn how to draw with proportion and perspective, working from small studies into larger sustained drawings. Explore different mediums including graphite, charcoal, pastel and ink.

Landscape painting in the city Kevin McKay Learn the fundamental skills of acrylic and oil painting, including composition and perspective. Create en plein air paintings at the Botanical Gardens, Observatory Hill, Strickland House and Cockatoo Island.

Open to all levels and abilities you will explore the flexibility of clay as it transforms into an object of beauty. All materials are supplied and selected works will be bisqued, glazed and fired.

Do you have bisque fired ceramic works that you would like to glaze? Bring your bisque fired work along with textured test tiles for two days of application, discussion, testing and firing.

Monday 29 September to Friday 3 October Experience the powerful landscape of Hill End, a historic gold mining town in Central Western NSW. This five-day painting and drawing workshop explores the town’s unique qualities and ignites your passion for the Australian countryside.

Landscape painting and drawing at Hill End Jeff Rigby The artists’ week is led by esteemed artist educator Jeff Rigby and based at the National Art School’s studio in the old Bryant’s Butchery.
