National Ballet Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté has always brought to the many roles he has performed an unstinting spirit of passionate exploration and emotional honesty. As a Choreographic Associate with the company, those same principles apply. In Being and Nothingness from 2015, he finds in his source material, Jean-Paul Sartre's landmark philosophical work of the same name, questions of freedom, the nature of selfhood and the meaning of existence and illuminates those abstract ideas in his highly expressive, richly physical choreographic style.

The Dream Choreography: Frederick Ashton Staged by: Christopher Carr Music: Felix Mendelssohn, arranged by John Lanchbery By arrangement with Theodore Presser Company, agents for Editions Mario Bois, publisher and copyright owner. Set and Costume Design: David Walker Lighting Design: Thomas Saunders after Royal Ballet design Répétiteurs: Karen Kain, Christopher Stowell, Rex Harrington and Mandy-Jayne Richardson The National Ballet Orchestra with the St. Michael’s Choir School, Executive Director: Stephen Handrigan Soloists: Jean Paul Feo and Liam McAlpine World Premiere: The Royal Ballet, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, April 2, 1964 The National Ballet of Canada Premiere: O'Keefe Centre (now Sony Centre for the Performing Arts), Toronto, February 16, 1978

Frederick Ashton's The Dream, based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, is one of the most universally admired and artistically satisfying of all ballet adaptations of the playwright's work. Using Felix Mendelssohn's beloved music, arranged by John Lanchbery, Ashton's version of the play is a miracle of dramatic concision, giving us the familiar characters of Titania and Oberon, the four confused lovers, Puck and the rude mechanicals in a taut but lyrical one-act re-imagining of the story set in Victorian times. Ashton's vibrant, moonlit choreography is seamlessly integrated with every magical shift in the narrative's mood.

Krista Dowson Costume Designer, Being and Nothingness

David Finn Lighting Designer, Being and Nothingness

Sir Frederick Ashton Choreographer, The Dream

16

Krista Dowson learned to sew at her parents dining room table during her 14-year tenure as a dancer with The National Ballet of Canada. From the stage to behind the scenes, this self-taught costumier enjoys making spandex look beautiful and the challenge of turning two dimensional designs into three-dimensional apparel. Ms. Dowson has also designed and built costumes for Guillaume Côté’s Body of Work and Dance Me To The End Of Love, which were performed at the National Ballet’s MAD HOT BALLET gala in 2014 and at the Festival des Arts de SaintSauveur. Other costume commissions include The Seven Deadly Sins for The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Robert Binet’s choreography for YOU dance, the National Ballet’s 2017 Choreographic Workshop, the Hillside Beach Club in Turkey, Casa Loma’s Legends of Horror, JDX Entertainment and ProArteDanza in addition to a number of independent artists locally and internationally. Her creation for The Tutu Project fundraiser was featured at Toronto’s Design Exchange. Originally from Simcoe, Ontario, Ms. Dowson trained at Canada’s National Ballet School and, after completing a two-year apprenticeship at the National Ballet, was a member of the Corps de Ballet from 2002 to 2014.

David Finn began his career as a lighting designer for the puppeteer Burr Tillstrom and Kukla, Fran & Ollie. Mr. Finn’s work with The National Ballet of Canada includes The Firebird, Terra Firma, La Baiser de la Fée and The Four Seasons by James Kudelka and Being and Nothingness and Le Petit Prince by Guillaume Côté. His dance work includes The Nutcracker (Birmingham Royal Ballet, Atlanta Ballet), Romeo & Juliette (Paris Opéra Ballet), Swan Lake (The Royal Ballet) and works for choreographers Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Sasha Waltz, Merce Cunningham, José Limón, Helgi Tomasson, Liam Scarlett and Dana Reitz. Mr. Finn was Resident Lighting Designer for Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project from 1993 to 2000. His opera work includes projects for the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera, Paris Opéra, Teatro alla Scala, Salzburg Festival, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Canadian Opera Company and San Francisco Opera, among others. For film, Mr. Finn consulted on Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence and directed the PBS documentary The Green Monster. He designed Zed (Tokyo) and Michael Jackson ONE (Las Vegas) for Cirque du Soleil.

Sir Frederick Ashton created a distinct style of classical ballet imbued with a wonderful sense of musicality and intertwining of steps. Active until his death in 1988 at the age of 83, he created a vast repertoire of ballets which are performed around the world. Sir Frederick was born in Ecuador in 1905 and was raised in Peru. After moving to England at the age of 18, he began studying with the great dancer and choreographer Léonide Massine and with dancer/teacher Marie Rambert at the Rambert Dance Company. It was Ms. Rambert who discovered Sir Frederick's talent for choreography and helped him earn his first commission in 1926, A Tragedy of Fashion. Sir Frederick created hundreds of works, the best-loved being Daphnis and Chlöe, The Two Pigeons, Birthday Offering, La Fille mal gardée, A Month in the Country and Monotones I and II. Toward the end of his life, Sir Frederick embarked on a number of projects, including revivals of his older works, some thought to be lost, including Romeo and Juliet for English National Ballet and Capriole Suite for Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet. Sir Frederick also revived two of his full-length ballets, Cinderella and Ondine for The Royal Ballet and contributed to Natalia Makarova’s production of Swan Lake for English National Ballet. Sir Frederick was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1962. In 1970, he was made a Companion of Honour and received the Order of Merit in 1977. He was also made a member of the Legion d'Honneur by the French government, a Commander of the Danish Order of Dannebrog and was awarded the Swedish Carina Ari Gold Medal. Sir Frederick Ashton died in 1988.

The son of a Yorkshire coalminer, Christopher Carr trained in Barnsley, England with Mavis Burrows and at The Royal Ballet School. In 1967, he joined The Royal Ballet Touring Company and in 1970 transferred to The Royal Ballet. Mr. Carr was promoted to Soloist in 1975 and later to Senior Soloist and continued to perform until 1990. Mr. Carr became Assistant Ballet Master in 1983, Répétiteur to The Royal Ballet in 1984, Ballet Master in 1988 and Rehearsal Director in 2001. He has rehearsed and staged the majority of The Royal Ballet’s extensive repertory and has taught and staged various ballets for most of the leading companies around the world. St. Michael's Choir School Founded in 1937, with the purpose of providing sacred music for services at St. Michael's Cathedral in downtown Toronto, St. Michael's Choir School is a centre for musical and academic excellence. It is one of only six choir schools in the world affiliated with the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome. Each student admitted to the Choir School is trained in vocal and instrumental music, and sings in at least one of the school's choirs. In addition to the annual Christmas concert, the choirs tour regularly and perform at many local events. For 75 years, graduates of the Choir School have pursued studies in science, education, medicine, law, business, and, of course, music. In the last group are the Crew Cuts and Four Lads of the 1950s and present-day musical artists Michael Colvin, Stewart Goodyear, Kevin Hearn (Barenaked Ladies), John McDermott, Claude Morrison (The Nylons), Robert Pomakov, Michael Schade, and the late Michael Burgess. “I want to help ensure that The National Ballet of Canada’s outreach programme continues to expand and to reach people in the far-flung corners of our global community, particularly those who have less visibility to ballet. Looking ahead, I would love to see the National Ballet use its global influence to forge a healthy and diverse dancer base, and to reach audiences of the future in dynamic and engaging ways. We have so many new ways to share the arts that didn’t exist in previous generations. It’s critical that we use them to nurture the next generation, to inspire and include them with meaningful dance.” — Flora Do Soaring Campaign Ambassador Turnout Cabinet

Soaring: The Campaign for The National Ballet of Canada 24

With a goal of $100 million, Soaring is one of the most significant cultural campaigns in Canadian history, and is already laying the foundation for a vibrant, artistically visionary National Ballet that will engage more audiences than ever before. Now, with $94 million in funds raised, we are asking you to join us in this final phase of the campaign and to pave the way for continued success. We are so proud to share the magnificent results of our community’s generosity this season and beyond, with dance that engages and moves us, and strikes a chord with our common humanity. — David Macdonald Chair, Soaring Campaign
