Welcome It gives me great pleasure to present The National Ballet of Canada on stage for MAD HOT BALLET: Desert Dream, our 2019 fundraising gala. Tonight’s performances capture the diversity and artistry within our current roster of dancers and our growing repertoire of new and classical works. We also pay homage to Principal Dancer Xiao Nan Yu, who marks her retirement following an exquisite 22 years with the company in an excerpt from The Merry Widow. Once again, I had the opportunity to include a preview of an exciting new work from a Canadian choreographer, this time from Choreographic Associate Robert Binet, featuring Xiao Nan Yu with costume design by Canadian designer Thomas Tait. We also present George Balanchine’s beloved Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, an excerpt from Guillaume Côté’s Being and Nothingness, and the pas de deux from La Sylphide, performed by our competitors for the 2019 Erik Bruhn Prize, Corps de Ballet members Jeannine Haller and Siphesihle November. The gala always makes for a very special and collegial evening, one that bears the stamp of so many creative individuals. I want to extend sincere gratitude to our Co-Chairs Rana Florida and Rochelle de Goias for their vision and leadership, to the Gala Committee for executing so many treasured details, and to our corporate partner, CIBC, for sponsoring the gala since 2007. To our loyal audiences, thank you for opening your hearts and lives to The National Ballet of Canada not just tonight, but throughout each season. We share our every success with you.

Welcome MAD HOT BALLET: Desert Dream is the 13th installment of our annual fundraising gala, and is poised to raise more than $1 million in support of The National Ballet of Canada. This evening’s events, from a curated performance to a themed cocktail reception, reflect everything we love most about the company today – artistry, diversity, innovation and excellence.
Cornell C.V. Wright
As our signature fundraising event, MAD HOT BALLET directs vital funds to the daily operations of the National Ballet and helps to secure a strong foundation for future growth. The gala is also a celebration, not only of the company and its artists, but also of the many groups and individuals who support the National Ballet each season. To attend the gala is to participate in a broader community of support for Canadian arts and culture, and to share with others the joy and meaning that comes from experiencing great art. We owe this fabulous evening to the steady guidance of our Gala Co-Chairs, Rana Florida and Rochelle de Goias, and their Gala Committee. Thank you for taking the lead on the event and for infusing it with the National Ballet’s signature style and grace. We also thank our longstanding corporate sponsor, CIBC, for many years of partnership on the gala and beyond.
Barry Hughson
To you, our valued audience members, welcome to Desert Dream and thank you for your patronage. The National Ballet of Canada is soaring because of you.

Thank You Welcome to Desert Dream! In partnership with our fantastic Gala Committee, we have created an evening of dance and celebration that promises to whisk you away to the warm sands of the Sahara. Desert Dream was inspired by Morocco’s diverse cultural landscape, unforgettable architecture, vibrant colours and exotic tastes. Tonight is a wonderful opportunity for those who love great dance to celebrate the world-class company in our midst and to share the joy we experience watching and supporting the National Ballet with others. As the National Ballet’s largest fundraising event, this evening’s gala will raise over $1 million in support of performances and community outreach programmes. Your attendance tonight contributes to the vitality of the National Ballet so that it will continue to enrich the cultural landscape of our community and Canada. As the co-chairs, we want to take this opportunity to thank you for helping to bring Desert Dream to life, as well as our committee members, sponsors, volunteers and National Ballet staff. Finally, we thank the talented artists of the National Ballet for inspiring us with their performances, not only tonight, but throughout each incredible season. Let the adventure begin!
