Presenting Sponsor 2020/21 Season

A Message from Artistic Director Karen Kain Dear Friend,

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted so many aspects of our lives and I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy during these very difficult times. This unprecedented situation has necessitated the cancellation of our 2020/21 Fall Season and The Nutcracker. Not being able to share the power of live performance with you is deeply disappointing for our dancers, musicians and staff, and we know you share this disappointment, but the safety of our audiences and artists is our foremost priority. We have seen our city, province and country pull together during this pandemic. That commitment is paying off with good news from Public Health that we are succeeding in flattening the curve. We remain hopeful that this trend will continue and, at this time, we intend to proceed with our Winter Season in March 2021 and our Summer Season in June 2021 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The updated season will open with Crystal Pite’s Dora Award-winning Angels’ Atlas on March 3, 2021. I could not think of a more fitting ballet for our return than Crystal’s profoundly moving work about human connection and the ephemerality of existence. Angels’ Atlas will be presented with George Balanchine’s Serenade and The Four Seasons by James Kudelka. As previously announced the company will also perform James’ Cinderella and John Neumeier’s A Streetcar Named Desire in March and the world premiere of my new Swan Lake in June. I look forward to sharing the beauty of ballet with you again in March 2021. Warmly,

Karen Kain, C.C. Artistic Director

Angels’ Atlas with Serenade & The Four Seasons March 3 – 7, 2021 Crystal Pite’s acclaimed creation for The National Ballet of Canada, Angels’ Atlas, explores the impermanence and vitality of human life by setting the dancers against a gorgeous, morphing wall of light. George Balanchine’s iconic Serenade and James Kudelka’s The Four Seasons round out this moving triple bill.

Cinderella Perfect for March Break

March 11 – 20, 2021

James Kudelka’s Cinderella balances tradition with modernity in a unique rendering of the story that discards the rags-to-riches scenario to put Cinderella on equal footing with Prince Charming, confined by their respective circumstances and in search of a simpler life. Tender and hilarious, Kudelka’s is an unrivalled adaptation of the classic fairy-tale.

A Streetcar Named Desire A Ballet by John Neumeier March 24 – 28, 2021 John Neumeier’s powerful adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tennessee Williams follows the demise of Blanche DuBois, a southern belle transplanted into a hostile landscape she cannot accept. Richly characterized and simmering with violence, A Streetcar Named Desire is a gritty, psychological portrait of loss, delusion and desire. Contains mature content.
