The National Ballet of Canada acknowledges our creative home on the sacred and traditional territories of the Anishinabek, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat. We acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaty signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands. We support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The National Ballet of Canada recognizes the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples, and that Toronto (Tkaronto) – which means “where there are trees standing in the water” – continues to be home to many Indigenous nations. Toronto has also been called “the Dish With One Spoon” which means all were and are invited and able to share, including sharing the responsibility of ensuring the dish is never empty, taking care of the land and the creatures we share it with and that there are no knives at the table, representing that we must keep the peace. The National Ballet of Canada is grateful to have the opportunity to work, dance and create on these lands and we thank the past, present and future caretakers of this land for their stewardship. We take this as a moment to reflect on our own activities and how The National Ballet of Canada can be part of a community of sharing as we take steps to ensure our practice, artists, staff, volunteers, Board members, patrons and audiences are open to engaging all peoples who live in these territories today and in the future. To this end, the National Ballet is now developing action plans to support this direction.

Alexei Ratmansky’s Piano Concerto #1 is the third part of his Shostakovich Trilogy, which pays tribute to Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Each part evokes the drama of Shostakovich’s life under Stalinism as he struggled to reconcile his desire for artistic freedom with the demands of the state. Piano Concerto #1 contains some of the most abstract choreography in the trilogy and it stands alone as a work of great beauty and power.

Petite Mort Choreography: Jiří Kylián Staged by: Roslyn Anderson Music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Piano Concerto in A Major (KV 488), Adagio & Piano Concerto in C Major (KV 467) Piano Soloist: Andrei Streliaev Set Design: Jiří Kylián Costume Design: Joke Visser Lighting Design: Jiří Kylián, Joop Caboort (Realisation) Technical Consultant: Joost Biegelaar Répétiteur: Rex Harrington Scenery and costumes courtesy of Boston Ballet World Premiere: Nederlands Dans Theater, Salzburg, Austria, August 23, 1991 The National Ballet of Canada Premiere: Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, November 27, 2019

Petite Mort is a dynamic short ballet from the acclaimed Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián. Playing on sexual inuendo in the phrase “petite mort” or “little death”, a cast of six male and six female dancers move and spar with another in beautiful and unexpected ways, sometimes using fencing foils in allusion to the sexual dual. This is a ballet of couplings, a witty exploration of sensuality that blends modern and classical sensibilities.

The National Ballet Orchestra The National Ballet of Canada is privileged to have its own full Orchestra with over 60 members. The Orchestra has performed in each of the National Ballet’s seasons and is led by Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin. The company’s first Music Director was George Crum who, along with Founder Celia Franca, was a pioneer of the company. Mr. Crum held the position from the company’s inception in 1951 to 1984, when he was appointed Music Director Emeritus. The Orchestra was led by Ermanno Florio from 1985 to 1990. Ormsby Wilkins was Music Director and Principal Conductor from 1990 to 2006. The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra has toured extensively with the company through Canada, the US and Europe. Over the years, the Orchestra has received much acclaim from audiences and critics alike and has recorded two CDs of Michael Torke’s compositions for The Contract (The Pied Piper) and An Italian Straw Hat. The Orchestra made their concert debut at Koerner Hall on April 3, 2012, in celebration of the company’s 60th anniversary.

Ishrani Jaikaran Legacy Donor and 20-year Subscriber When did you discover dance? As most little girls I loved to dance. I can remember how excited I was going to my ballet class. In my late teens, I was fortunate enough to see Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev dance in Swan Lake and I was hooked. When did you first see the National Ballet? In 1990, I moved to Toronto. I met three lovely ladies who attended the ballet regularly and I was invited to join them. While I was a caregiver, attending the ballet was always a treat which allowed me to forget about my everyday problems and lose myself in wonderful artistry. What do you appreciate most about the company? The dancers of The National Ballet of Canada dedicate their lives to their craft and in so doing give us so much pleasure. Why have you established a legacy gift? Because of the pleasure and enjoyment that the National Ballet has given me, I want in some way to contribute to the company’s continued growth and success. Leaving a legacy to this wonderful company is my way to express my appreciation. For more information, visit
