The global pandemic of COVID-19 prompted extensive lockdown measures across Canada, including the closure of our performance and rehearsal spaces at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts and The Walter Carsen Centre. On March 13, 2020, The National Ballet of Canada cancelled all remaining performances of Alexei Ratmansky’s Romeo and Juliet and, on April 2, postponed the world premiere of Karen Kain’s Swan Lake and 50th Anniversary Celebration Gala. In the midst of this upheaval, the company moved quickly to stay connected with our diverse communities, exploring the digital space for new ways of sharing and creating dance, supporting the dancers’ training and wellbeing, and consulting with our partners in education and community engagement to meet children’s needs through dance, music and stories. One of the highest purposes of our art form is connecting with others, and we have been incredibly fortunate to find so many who are willing to come with us as we traverse this new normal. The National Ballet of Canada was established by volunteers and continues to rely on the support of passionate donors, audiences and friends to inspire, create and share dance of the highest calibre. We are humbled and thankful that so many have continued to give by donating or exchanging tickets, renewing subscriptions and participating in our donor programmes. The significance of these actions cannot be overstated. Digital programming will continue into the 2020/21 season, with Karen Kain remaining in her role as Artistic Director to provide much needed stability as we plan for a safe and exciting return to the stage.

“We are confident that COVID-19 will be defeated and audiences will once again be thrilled by the unsurpassed magnificence of the National Ballet’s performances, music and creative excellence.” – Patrons’ Council Donor Hugh Siddall Opposite: Brenna Flaherty and Kota Sato. Photo by Karolina Kuras.

KAREN KAIN’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Few individuals in the history of Canadian culture have served with such passion and commitment as Artistic Director Karen Kain. Over her long and varied career with The National Ballet of Canada, she has excelled as a dancer, colleague, mentor, arts advocate and leader. One of the most gifted classical dancers of her era, she has worked tirelessly to cultivate the same opportunities for artistic development that fuelled her own career. Under her direction, the National Ballet has created more new productions, nurtured more Canadian talent, and toured internationally more than at any other point in its history. Karen’s vision for the National Ballet as an innovative, accessible organization has galvanized new levels of support from audiences and donors worldwide, setting the stage for continued excellence. Karen was honoured for her myriad achievements throughout the 2019/20 season, beginning with the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award from The Royal Academy of Dance on August 29, 2019 and carrying into the company’s fall and winter performances, where each work represented a significant moment from her career. The celebrations will conclude with the forthcoming world premiere of Karen’s new staging of Swan Lake.

“The goals I set when I assumed this position required a huge commitment from our dancers, staff, board and donor community. The unwavering support I received allowed my dreams to become a reality and I am so grateful.” – Artistic Director Karen Kain, C.C.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

The National Ballet of Canada’s Policy Statement for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

At The National Ballet of Canada, we strongly believe that embracing each of our different and unique experiences based on factors such as our cultural and racial backgrounds, citizenship, creed, sex, gender identity and gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital and family status, ability and disability bring value to the workplace and the Company. We also recognize that Toronto is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, and as a major arts institution, we need to better reflect that diversity throughout our organization. We also acknowledge the historic inequities of our art form, and look to further partner with our community and peer institutions around the world to remove real and perceived barriers that exist, while preserving the integrity of the artform and maintaining the highest artistic standards. The National Ballet is committed to creating a more diverse and equitable workplace, advancing the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in our field, and approaching this work with authenticity and respect.

Over the 2019/20 season, The National Ballet of Canada continued its partnership with Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario (CPAMO) in developing a multi-year company-wide plan for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. CPAMO’s Charles Smith and Kevin Ormsby have been guiding us in work that includes an international dance sector environmental scan, multiple stakeholder meetings and the creation of an internal EDI Task Force. We also completed our participation in The Equity Project – Increasing the Presence of Blacks in Ballet, a three-year cohort of large North American ballet institutions convened by DanceUSA, the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) and Dance Theatre of Harlem. The Equity Project held its final convening in New York City in January, 2020 and a few weeks later, we were fully immersed in the COVID-19 pandemic. As we were coming together as an organization to find our way through the pandemic, on May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered by police in Minneapolis, filmed for the world to see. This crime resulted in a global outcry to end systemic racism. At the National Ballet, we joined hundreds of arts institutions around the world in making statements of solidarity. These statements drew praise and condemnation, and one of our own dancers publicly spoke up about his painful experiences in ballet and as a member of our company. 10

Our Partners in Change

Theresa Ruth Howard Founder, Memoirs of Blacks in Ballet (MOBBallet)

Kevin A. Ormsby Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario (CPAMO)

With support from our equity team at Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario, we brought our company together for difficult and important conversations about race. We welcomed American activist, consultant and former ballerina Theresa Ruth Howard, who brought her unique perspective through her lived experiences in the ballet world. There has been a collective “leaning in” to this work over the last two years at the National Ballet and an amplification of its importance in the last few months. At the end of September, Second Soloist Joe Chapman took a video of Corps de Ballet member Tene Ward receiving her first pair of pointe shoes that matched her skin tone, manufactured by Freed of London. There was an overwhelming social media response to Tene’s emotional reaction, with hundreds of thousands of views. Comments ranged from praise to anger that it had taken this long for something so simple and so obvious. In 1795, Charles Didelot created the predecessor of classical pointe shoes. 225 years later, Tene got a pair of pointe shoes that match her skin tone. 225 years. Under Karen Kain’s artistic leadership, today’s National Ballet is more visibly diverse than at any point in its history, but over nearly seven decades, there has been only one Black Principal Dancer. We have to do better, as an organization and as an art form – and we will.

DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT “Thank you for the lovely We Applaud You video. It truly warmed my heart and was a bright moment during this time. We certainly will get through this together!” – Friends’ Corps Donor Michele Whitcombe

The National Ballet of Canada is committed to using new and emerging technologies to create and share high calibre content with a wider audience both within Canada and globally. These efforts accelerated in the wake of COVID-19, when the company increased the volume, frequency and range of content on our existing web-based and social media channels, while adding new platforms to our repertoire. With the help of technology, frontline workers enjoyed dedicated ballet classes, donors attended virtual events, dancers attended daily class, and children accessed special videos and activities online. The 2019/20 season also saw the continuation of our regular virtual programming and plans, including our participation in Digital Reach, a three-year initiative funded by the Canada Council for the Arts to help arts institutions develop and share content worldwide. “One of The National Ballet of Canada’s highest priorities is to bring the unique rewards of dance in terms of creativity, joy and human connection to young people throughout Canada. Our hope is to make dance familiar, inclusive and enjoyable for all.” – Lisa Robinson, Manager, Education and Community Engagement

“What a difference the ballet has made for our family. These performances allow us to be out as a family with our son with significant special needs. He is non-verbal but mesmerized by the ballet to a point he was almost dancing in his seat – we had never seen him do that before. At your performances we fit in because you make it so authentic and warm for our families.” – Family, YOU dance performance Lisa Robinson. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

YOU dance “Your reputation precedes you and our new classes look forward each year to being part of the YOU dance programme. Share the Magic “Aisha and her children loved, loved watching Romeo and Juliet. It was magical for them. It was their first experience seeing a ballet. I’m not sure that they quite knew what a special evening they were in store for. But they left the theatre absolutely floating on cloud nine. Thank you for allowing us to once again introduce Canadian newcomers to the wonder of ballet.” – Roncesvalles Refugee Relief

Relaxed Performances “For a child who is largely locked in his own little world, I saw him enlivened by the stunning artistry onstage. My husband and I were moved by the beauty of the ballets, but we were more touched by our son’s reaction to the experience. It was an evening that will stay with us in our hearts forever.” – Parent, Kerry’s Place, Autism Service

Dance About The highest form of praise is sparking curiosity, imagination and general interest in our audiences. Dance About is special because the students get to see every aspect of ballet, from class and partnering to pas de deux and character miming. The programme introduces dance to future audience members, dancers and stage crew, so the wonderful art of ballet lives on!” – 2019/20 Apprentice Daina Zolty

CREATIVACTION

2019/20 marked the second season of CreativAction, an initiative that develops Canadian choreographic talent and shares The National Ballet of Canada’s resources in support of Toronto’s diverse dance community. Established by Artistic Director Karen Kain and Associate Artistic Director Christopher Stowell, and curated by Creative Producer and Choreographic Associate Robert Binet, CreativAction has three core activities: The Choreographic Workshop, Open Space and Micro-Commissions.

“My experience with the National Ballet’s Choreographic Workshop was a complete game changer for me. Not only was it invaluable in translating my contemporary movement vocabulary onto more classical dancers, participating in the Workshop was the catalyst for many other career opportunities that followed, both inside the company and out.” – Choreographic Associate Alysa Pires

32

The Choreographic Workshop A platform that provides National Ballet artists and independent choreographers with the opportunity to create works in collaboration with the company’s artists, music and production staff within the National Ballet’s facilities. In 2019/20, the workshop commissioned seven solos inspired by the two oldest works in the fall season, Sir Peter Wright’s Giselle and Harald Lander’s Etudes.

Open Space The National Ballet provided 891 hours of free studio space at The Walter Carsen Centre over one to two-week periods this season for Torontobased dance artists. From July 2019 through March 2020, the National Ballet welcomed 25 independent artists and companies to use the studios at The Walter Carsen Centre free of charge.

“The choreographic residency was such a valuable experience for my project. I realized so much of my work has been small because of the spaces independent artists can afford. With one week of larger space it was striking to see how full and explosive the movement became, making me really consider how tied our art is to the spaces we work in.” – Contemporary Dance Artist Emma Kerson Alexander Skinner in Kota Sato’s Trio Sonata from The Choreographic Workshop. CREATIVACTION

Micro-Commissions Each season, the National Ballet commissions three small scale, flexible and innovative dance works that can be presented in a wide range of contexts.

“I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to work so closely with Lucy Rupert. We had an incredible in studio connection which lead to an amazing collaboration and the bringing to life of a thoughtful, challenging and beautiful solo. These are the initiatives that are so vital to the development of dancers and to create works and memories that enhance a career.” – First Soloist Tanya Howard

34

“CreativAction is essential to our work as a leading dance organization in Canada. In addition to supporting the local dance ecology and helping independent creators bring their projects to fruition, the three programmes create a variety of new and radical pathways for artists into creating ballet.” – Creative Producer and Choreographic Associate Robert Binet

AUDIENCE IMPACT

The power of the performing arts exists at the intersection of artist and audience, when a creative offering connects so entirely with others that the experience becomes shared. The National Ballet of Canada strives to create meaningful connections with diverse audiences through dance. The audience is a mirror for our artists and every performance a window into the ideas, emotions, stories and aesthetics that shape our world. In 2019/20, we were fortunate to have 290,328 audience members in theatres, schools and the broader community join us in dance.

REMEMBERING THOSE WE LOST IN 2019/20

Richard M. Ivey, C.C. Richard M. Ivey first saw The National Ballet of Canada perform in London, Ontario and became a subscriber with his late wife Beryl when they moved to Toronto. Over the past decade, Richard became a transformational supporter of new productions, beginning with Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Richard went on to support another Christopher Wheeldon ballet, The Winter’s Tale, along with John Neumeier’s Anna Karenina in 2018 and Karen’s Kain’s forthcoming Swan Lake. In bringing numerous new creations to the stage, Richard has provided endless opportunity to artists and joy to audiences. He was a leader and philanthropist and his legacy lives on with the Beryl & Richard Ivey Fund in the Endowment Foundation. Arthur Scace, C.M., Q.C. Arthur Scace was a close friend to The National Ballet of Canada and together with his wife Susan, Arthur provided decades of influential support to the company through the Patrons’ Council, The Producers’ Circle, The Endowment Foundation and Karen Kain’s Swan Lake. Arthur was a member of the Campaign Cabinet of the Canadian Opera House Corporation that raised the funds to build the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, a project he and Susan supported independently through the National Ballet’s Next Steps campaign.

Ada Slaight A cherished friend, Ada Slaight is remembered for the empathy, vision and concern for young people that defined her relationship with The National Ballet of Canada for three decades. Ada’s legacy of support for children and arts education began in 1989 with her first gift to Share the Magic, an annual event that provides free tickets to The Nutcracker for young people and their families each year. In total, Ada’s 30-year investment in Share the Magic has brought joy into the lives of an incredible 97,400 children and youth.

Diana St. Barbe Weatherall Diana St. Barbe Weatherall was a beloved and passionate friend to The National Ballet of Canada as a Celia Franca Society member and Dancers First sponsor, providing vital support to the company’s dancers. In recent years, Diana sponsored First Soloist Chelsy Meiss with genuine love and interest, making a significant impact in her life and career. Diana had a great interest in people and was surrounded by a wide circle of friends and family, not least of all her husband John. Her love for the arts was infectious and will continue through her legacy gift to the Endowment Foundation.

Ted Weatherill A respected leader, Ted Weatherill served on The Board of Directors of The National Ballet of Canada from 1966 to 1973, sharing his insight and expertise on all aspects of the organization. Ted was also President of Coordinated Arts Services (1970-1972), which operated under the Canada Council for the Arts to provide shared services to arts organizations including the National Ballet. Ted’s successful 60-year career in the legal profession reflects a level of dedication that the National Ballet is grateful to have experienced firsthand.

William Weldon William (Bill) Weldon served on The Board of Directors of The National Ballet of Canada from 1989 to 1996. In 1996 his colleagues at Arthur Andersen Partners paid tribute to William’s years of dedication to the ballet by sponsoring the naming of the Weldon Boardroom at The Walter Carsen Centre in his honour. William and his wife Arlene remained committed members of The Patrons’ Council for several years following his retirement from The Board of Directors. The National Ballet is honoured to recognize William’s life, legacy and philanthropic spirit.

MESSAGE

The National Ballet of Canada’s 2019/20 season was programmed with exciting new productions, touring, community engagement initiatives and the celebration of Karen Kain’s 50th anniversary. The company was on track to have a very successful season when COVID-19 required us to close theatres mid-run of our Romeo and Juliet performances in March. This initial cancellation and the subsequent postponement of our ground breaking new Swan Lake, the Karen Kain 50th Anniversary Gala, all live In Studio classes and outstanding tours presented us with significant challenges in achieving a balanced budget and had a substantial impact on the financial statements presented this year. The impact of these challenges on the Statement of Financial Position includes the deferral of all funds raised for production of Swan Lake and the Anniversary Gala, the deferral of costs incurred related to the development of Swan Lake and the deferral of all box office monies collected for cancelled performances that were placed on account or in gift vouchers. These deferred revenues and expenses will be recognized in a subsequent year when the related performances take place. On the Statement of Operations, these challenges resulted in a $4.1 million decline in box office revenue over the prior year due to the loss of ticket sales for cancelled performances and cancelled tour revenue and a $4.0 million decline in fundraising revenue resulting from the deferral of donations associated with the delay in presenting Swan Lake and the Anniversary Gala. To offset these losses, the company quickly shifted gears to reduce expenses by $2.8 million over the prior year, while protecting artists and staff through June 30, 2020. This control over expenses along with proceeds from a performance interruption insurance policy, the generous support of our donors as well as government funding through the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy for staff and a one time special COVID-19 emergency grant from Heritage Canada, made it possible for the National Ballet to deliver a modest deficit of $303 thousand for the 2019/20 season.

The National Ballet of Canada has prepared these summary financial statements to be included as part of the annual report. The criteria applied by management in preparation of these summary financial statements are as follows: a. the information in the summary financial statements is in agreement with the related information in the audited financial statements; b. a summary statement of cash flows, and notes to the financial statements have not been presented, as the relevant information can be obtained from the audited financial statements; and c. the summary financial statements contain the information necessary to avoid distorting or obscuring matters disclosed in the related audited financial statements, included notes thereto. Audited financial statements are available on The National Ballet of Canada official website.

Note 2

Since January 1, 2020, the spread of COVID-19 has severely impacted many local economies around the globe. Due to these unprecedented circumstances, on March 13, 2020, The National Ballet of Canada (the “Company”) announced the cancellation of all remaining performances, in-person events and classes for the remainder of the 2019/20 season and for the first half of the 2020/21 season, up to and including performances of The Nutcracker. The Company is monitoring the situation closely and has taken certain measures to contain operating costs and is preparing for multiple scenarios, including, in the worst case, a complete cancellation of the 2020/21 season. There is no impact to financial position and results of operations as of and for the year ended June 30, 2020 other than the immediate financial implications of the cancellation of the above productions and events. The duration and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the effectiveness of government and central bank responses, remains unclear currently. Accordingly, it is not possible to reliably estimate the duration and severity of these consequences, as well as their impact on the financial position and results of the Company for future periods.

“I would like to extend deep appreciation to The Audit and Finance Committee, who were instrumental in providing guidance, and to the senior management team who worked thoughtfully and tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the loss of the March and June season. As well, the generous support of our donors and those who donated tickets and subscriptions for cancelled performances back to the company along with our annual Endowment Foundation grant helped us to end the year on the best possible financial footing. I am proud of what was accomplished by the company under these extraordinary circumstances.” – Krista Kerr, Chair, Audit and Finance Committee
