The National Ballet of Canada’s creative home is on the sacred and traditional territories of the Anishinabek, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat. So, it is with enormous gratitude and joy that we finally welcome you back to the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts for the first time in more than 20 months, our dream realized at last. We are proud to present a programme of dance that feels so attuned to the emotion and sense of community that inform this moment of our reopening and our shared experience of recent global events. Crystal Pite’s Angels’ Atlas and George Balanchine’s Serenade are both visually striking, contemplative works that evoke the collective human experience through their ensemble work. The sight of so many dancers onstage together feels incredibly powerful in the context of the past year. The Art of Serenade

An Interview with Christopher Stowell

By Caroline Dickie Speed and agility are top of mind when it comes to the work of George Balanchine, but he was also a gifted creator of imagery and poetic moments of stillness, as when Apollo gently rests his head in the hands of his Muses. In Serenade, the curtain rises on an image of astonishing beauty from which everything else in the ballet will flow: 17 women drenched in blue light, arms raised to the sky. “You get the sense that there are infinite women standing there and that you’ve only been given a small slice of their world,” says Associate Artistic Director Christopher Stowell. “Nearly 100 years after the ballet was created, the image still hasn’t lost its power. There’s a reason why ballet companies are choosing to return to the stage with it.”

Serenade was first performed in 1934 by students at the School of American Ballet. It was the first ballet Balanchine created in America and is now a signature work for the company he co-founded, New York City Ballet. The story of its creation is legendary, with Balanchine incorporating unexpected events from the rehearsal process into the choreography and reworking the ballet repeatedly over time. But as Christopher observes, the core of Serenade – its “palette” – is so exquisite that Balanchine was able to do a variety of things within it and not distract from its power. “What makes a piece of art last? I think it comes down to a combination of surprise and inevitability,” he says. “Serenade certainly isn’t predictable, but there is an inevitability about it. Every aspect comes to a satisfying conclusion – the patterns resolve themselves into a beautiful shape – and you’re left

with the feeling that it couldn’t have happened any other way.” In Serenade, Balanchine harkens back to his early Russian training and the choreography of Marius Petipa while stripping away traditional notions of character and plot. In a sense, the opening tableau is a reimagining of the female ensembles from classical ballets of the past, full of atmosphere and structure yet unbound by theatrical elements. Musically, Serenade also enters a dialogue with ballet’s past, with Balanchine choosing Petipa’s frequent collaborator and classical ballet composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Balanchine felt strongly connected to Tchaikovsky as an artist and returned to his music many times throughout his career. “Balanchine and Tchaikovsky were meant for one another,” says Christopher. “They were kindred Russian spirits despite being a generation apart.

Both managed to be emotional without wearing it on their sleeves. The form and structure of their works, the colours and atmosphere, all serve a deeper artistic expression.” Though it was created for students, Serenade is a challenging piece to dance, with fast footwork and intricate patterning for the Soloists and Corps de Ballet alike. After nearly two years offstage, the dancers of The National Ballet of Canada have welcomed the opportunity that Serenade has afforded to hone their technique. “It’s deeply rewarding to do something that we’re comfortable with and is also a challenge,” says Christopher. “It feels good to do these steps right now. Serenade is incredibly physical but it’s also full of joy. The dancers are getting so much satisfaction from that.”

In lieu of intermission, you will see the dance film Soul, a beautiful work created for film by Canadian choreographer Jera Wolfe for the company’s virtual season in 2020/21. Soul explores the insular beauty of personal relationships through two duets set to the same piece of music. The film is edited to show only half of each six-minute duet, leaving the remainder of the choreography unseen. This reinforces Wolfe’s theme that every relationship is a world unto itself and can never truly be known from the outside. This poetic film features Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté and First Soloist Tanya Howard, and Principal Dancers Harrison James and Ben Rudisin.

Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite created Angels’ Atlas for The National Ballet of Canada in 2020 to rapturous reviews. The ballet unfolds against a morphing wall of light that carries the illusion of depth and a sense of the natural world. Here, the dancing body becomes a sign of humanity’s impermanence and – equally – its vitality within a vast, unknowable world. Angels’ Atlas

A Note from Crystal Pite The impetus for this creation came from my partner and set designer Jay Gower Taylor. Through our last few creations, Jay has been developing a system that allows him to manipulate reflected light. Working with lighting designer Tom Visser, they've been discovering a myriad of ways to deliver light to a surface. The system is analog, made of the simplest materials, yet it manifests complex, painterly images that have the illusion of depth and a sense of the natural world. There is a quality of controlled chaos about it. The light dances on a pivoting, reflective topography, creating the conditions for the unexpected to appear. For us, this wall of morphing, shifting light is a frontier, a portal, a portrait of the unknown. When I was a little kid, my uncle and my dad talked to me a lot about the cosmos. Sometimes I would experience a dizzying thrill in brief moments of embodied comprehension: it felt like I was falling within the vastness of it all. They inspired me to wonder about colossal ideas that were, and always will be, beyond my grasp and to approach great unanswerable questions with imagination and creativity. Working with light in this way reminds me of that feeling of wonder and my longing to lean into the unknowable. The light looks intelligent, awesome. The chaos and beauty of it make me feel small in a thrilling, destabilized way. Small, in the face of unanswerable questions about things like love, death and the infinite.

The movement of the light is mercurial and ephemeral in the same way that choreography is. It reminds me of something the writer and critic Max Wyman said about dance: It is an artform that simultaneously defines and defies the ephemerality of existence. We have nothing but the body, and soon enough we will not even have the body. But it is that physicality that speaks so eloquently about the implications of mortality and at the same time voices our defiance. No other artform speaks so directly about the fragile, temporary quality of life, or about the human instinct to transcend those bonds and aim for that perfect moment of self-realization. I like to think of the body as a location, a place where being is held and shaped. In this way, dance gives form to the unknown. In the dancing body, the unknown appears as something both familiar and extraordinary. We might possibly catch a glimpse of something eternal. But both the dancers and the dance are temporary: their beauty resonates with meaning because of their impermanence. This is potent for me. I like working in a form that is always in a state of disappearing. Our dances, like our lives, are built in relationship with time… and by extension, mortality. I am trying to create something that speaks of our impermanence and ‘voices our defiance’ as Wyman says. Something that evokes a fierce pulse of life. The ephemeral part will take care of itself.

David Briskin Music Director and Principal Conductor

Hope Muir is an acclaimed dancer, teacher and director whose 33-year career spans two continents and a range of classical and contemporary styles. Born in Toronto, she is one of the first graduates of Peter Schaufuss’ London Festival Ballet School and a former dancer at English National Ballet, Rambert Dance Company and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. In 2009, Hope assisted Crystal Pite with the creation of Emergence for the National Ballet and has since helped to stage the work internationally. She has assisted numerous choreographers in this capacity, staging work by Christopher Bruce, Javier De Frutos and Helen Pickett, among others. Hope is the former Assistant Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet and the current Artistic Director of Charlotte Ballet in North Carolina, where she expanded the repertoire and established the highly successful Choreographic Lab. She officially assumes the role of Artistic Director with The National Ballet of Canada on January 1, 2022.

Barry Hughson joined The National Ballet of Canada as Executive Director in 2014. Since that time, the company has accelerated its trajectory of artistic growth, fiscal responsibility, community engagement and international acclaim. In 1988, Mr. Hughson began his professional career as a dancer with The Washington Ballet, performing at the Kennedy Center and internationally. After retiring as a performer, he served as Executive Director at a variety of arts institutions in the US, including The Warner Theatre, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, American Repertory Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and Boston Ballet. Mr. Hughson is deeply engaged with the international arts community and is sought-after as a speaker at industry events around the world. For nine years, he served on the board of Dance/USA, North America’s largest service organization for professional dance. In partnership with Dance/USA and The Royal Ballet, Mr. Hughson spearheaded the first meeting of North American and European executive dance leadership in 2015. In Canada, Mr. Hughson serves as Vice-Chair of the Canadian Dance Assembly and as a member of the Coordinating Committee for Respectful Workplaces in the Arts, where he chaired the working group responsible for the development of a nationwide Code of Conduct for the Live Performing Arts.

Music Director and Principal Conductor of The National Ballet of Canada since 2006, David Briskin is widely recognized as one of contemporary ballet’s most accomplished conductors. Prior to moving to Canada, Mr. Briskin lived and worked for 23 years as a conductor in New York City, working in opera, ballet and in concert. He conducted for seven years with American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City Center and in major opera houses throughout the world, and was a seasonal conductor for New York City Ballet. He has conducted for nearly all the major North American ballet companies. Highly in demand internationally as a guest conductor, Mr. Briskin has appeared with The Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, The Royal Swedish Ballet and The Royal Danish Ballet, where in 2021/22 he will conduct productions of Romeo and Juliet and La Sylphide at The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen and on tour throughout Denmark. He will also make his first appearance this season with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Briskin has appeared with orchestras and opera companies throughout Europe, Asia and North America including the Pittsburgh, Detroit, Baltimore, Cincinnati Pops, Indianapolis, Windsor and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras, as well as Calgary Opera, Manitoba Opera, Opera Carolina, Lake George Opera and Sarasota Opera, among others.

On November 4, The National Ballet of Canada announced a landmark gift from Joan and Jerry Lozinski to endow the position of Artistic Director. Joan and Jerry recognized the company’s need for consistent and long-term funding for sustained creative vision and inspired leadership to ensure our ongoing success. With the Lozinskis’ most recent gift to the Endowment Foundation, the National Ballet becomes the only performing arts organization in Canada with an endowed Artistic Director and one of few ballet companies in North America with this distinction. Over the course of their nearly four decades long relationship with the National Ballet, Joan and Jerry have offered their insight, advice and heartfelt commitment to the goals of the company. We are grateful for the scope and depth of their generosity, as well as their ability to galvanize our community of support. The naming of the Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director is a fitting testament to their longstanding contributions to the company and advances their wish to leave a powerful legacy for future generations of ballet lovers.

Christopher Stowell Associate Artistic Director

Christopher Stowell was born in New York City and received his training at Pacific Northwest Ballet School and the School of American Ballet. Upon graduation, Mr. Stowell joined San Francisco Ballet where he became a Principal Dancer and remained for 16 years. In 2003, Mr. Stowell was named Artistic Director of Oregon Ballet Theatre (OBT), a position he held until 2012. During his tenure Mr. Stowell made significant additions to OBT’s repertoire, bringing to Portland works from some of the world’s most celebrated choreographers. Mr. Stowell has taught and coached in San Francisco, New York City, Japan, China and across Europe. He has created works for San Francisco Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Los Angeles Ballet, Diablo Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet as well as New York City Ballet Choreographic Institute. He has also staged the works of George Balanchine, Mark Morris and Christopher Wheeldon. In 2017, Mr. Stowell joined The National Ballet of Canada as Associate Artistic Director. In this role, he oversees the Artistic staff, teaches, coaches and stages works for the company. Mr. Stowell is a member of the creative team for Artistic Director Emerita Karen Kain’s new production of Swan Lake which will premiere in June 2022. George Balanchine was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1904. He joined the State Theatre of Opera and Ballet in St. Petersburg at the age of 17. In 1924, Mr. Balanchine was invited by Serge Diaghilev to join Ballets Russes in Paris and was hired as Ballet Master in 1925. Mr. Balanchine formed his own company, Les Ballets 1933, in Paris and shortly thereafter met the dance connoisseur Lincoln Kirstein. In collaboration with Mr. Kirstein, Mr. Balanchine formed the School of American Ballet and American Ballet, which later became the resident ballet company at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Mr. Balanchine was choreographer for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo from 1944 to 1946 and in 1946, he formed Ballet Society, which became New York City Ballet in 1948. He held the title of Ballet Master with New York City Ballet until his death in 1983.

Internationally acknowledged as one of the pre-eminent authorities on the ballets of George Balanchine, Joysanne Sidimus has staged the great choreographer’s works for dance companies and schools the world over, including the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Deutsche Oper Am Rhein, Stuttgart Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, Teatro alla Scala, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Beijing Dance Academy, Alberta Ballet and The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. Born in New York, Ms. Sidimus studied under Balanchine at the School of American Ballet and then joined his New York City Ballet. She later performed as a soloist with London’s Festival Ballet and as a Principal Dancer with Pennsylvania Ballet and The National Ballet of Canada. As well as being a Balanchine répétiteur for both the National Ballet and The George Balanchine Trust, Ms. Sidimus is the founder of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre and was also the founding Vice President of the Artists’ Health Centre, a comprehensive health care facility for artists at Toronto Western Hospital In 2003, she was awarded the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Medal and in 2006, she received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.

Born in Toronto, Canada, Dora Award winner Jera Wolfe is a choreographer and performer of Métis heritage and is an Associate Artist with Red Sky Performance. Mr. Wolfe’s captivating choreography has awarded him the 2019 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Original Choreography for Trace. He has demonstrated an impressive repertoire of works presented by Canadian Stage, Fall For Dance North, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Festival des arts de Saint-Sauveur, Danse Danse, and Jacob's Pillow. Some of his recent works include Bare choreographed on Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet, FLOW by Red Sky Performance, Arise for Canada's National Ballet School and Begin Again for Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers. Most recently Mr. Wolfe presented an evening of works titled Reverie at Festival des arts de Saint-Sauveur. Aside from choreography, he performs primarily for Red Sky Performance and has also performed with many other companies including Peggy Baker Dance Projects.

Max Richter Composer, Soul

Max Richter stands as one of the most prodigious figures on the contemporary music scene. Memoryhouse, Mr. Richter’s 2002 debut, has been described by The Independent, and Pitchfork Magazine as a “landmark”, while his 2004 album The Blue Notebooks was chosen by The Guardian as one of the best Classical works of the century. SLEEP, his eight-and-a-half-hour concert work, has been performed worldwide, including at the Sydney Opera House, Berlin’s Kraftwerk, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, the Philharmonie de Paris and at the Barbican, London. Mr. Richter’s music has become a mainstay for many of the world’s leading ballet companies, including The Mariinsky Ballet, Teatro alla Scala Milan, New York City Ballet, Paris Opéra Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. Mr. Richter has written award-winning music for over 50 film and TV projects including Mary Queen of Scots, HBO’s My Brilliant Friend and The Leftovers, Tom Hardy’s Taboo, and Black Mirror. Mr. Richter’s recent score for James Gray’s Ad Astra earned him his second Grammy nomination.

For over 25 years, Paul McNulty has worked on numerous award-winning projects as a producer, director, videographer and editor. Travelling near and far, Mr. McNulty has captured exceptional moments for both broadcast television and documentary film making. From an early age he delved into the world of visual storytelling, fascinated by the ideas and experiences of people of all walks of life, from backyards to the backstage. Along the way he has partnered with countless corporate clients, agencies and art organizations in branding campaigns and productions. An avid practitioner of yoga and an enthusiastic hiker in his hometown of Toronto, he is the proud father of three. Mr. McNulty has been a long time associate of The National Ballet of Canada partnering on many video projects.

Crystal Pite Choreographer, Angels’ Atlas

Crystal Pite is a Canadian choreographer and former company member of Ballet BC and William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt. Ms. Pite’s professional choreographic debut was in 1990 at Ballet BC. Since then, she has created over 50 works for companies such as Paris Opéra Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater I, Cullberg Ballet, Ballett Frankfurt, The National Ballet of Canada, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal (Resident Choreographer, 2001 – 2004), Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Ballet British Columbia. She has also collaborated with Electric Company Theatre and Robert Lepage. The recipient of numerous awards for artistic excellence, including the 2017 Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production and most recently, the 2018 Grand Prix de la danse de Montréal (PDM), Ms. Pite is an Associate Choreographer of Nederlands Dans Theater, Associate Dance Artist of Canada’s National Arts Centre and Associate Artist at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London. In 2002, she formed her own company Kidd Pivot in Vancouver.

Owen Belton lives in Vancouver and graduated from Simon Fraser University in 1993 with a degree in Fine and Performing Arts, majoring in music. He studied acoustic and computer music composition with Owen Underhill and Barry Truax. Mr. Belton has been writing music for dance since 1994 when he created the music for Shapes Of A Passing for choreographer Crystal Pite’s piece for Toronto-based Ballet Jörgen. Since then, he has created many scores for dance companies including Kidd Pivot, The National Ballet of Canada, Nederlands Dans Theater, Cullberg Ballet, Ballet Nuremberg, Oregon Ballet Theatre and 420People in Prague. Mr. Belton also creates sound design and composition for film and live theatre. In 2009, Mr. Belton won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best Dance Score for Emergence.

Morten Lauridsen Music, Angels’ Atlas

Named an “American Choral Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2005, Morten Lauridsen received the 2007 National Medal of Arts in a White House ceremony “for his composition of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power, and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide.” He is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the USC Thornton School of Music where he chaired the department of composition and founded the Advanced Studies Program in Film Scoring. He was Composer-in-Residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale from 1995 to 2001. His compositions, including eight vocal cycles, arts songs, instrumental works and a series of sacred motets are performed regularly throughout the world and have been recorded on over 200 CDs, several of which have received Grammy nominations. The award-winning documentary, Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen, was released in 2012 and in 2016 Mr. Lauridsen received The ASCAP Foundation Life in Music Award at Lincoln Center. He currently lives in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Jay Gower Taylor started in theatre as a professional dancer where he accomplished an international career spanning more than 20 years. As a Scenic Designer, Mr. Taylor has collaborated with Crystal Pite over the last decade, creating onstage environments for works such as Plot Point, Frontier, Solo Echo, Parade, In the Event, Partita for 8 Dancers and The Statement for Nederlands Dans Theater, Emergence for The National Ballet of Canada, Polaris for Sadler’s Wells Theatre, The Seasons’ Canon for Paris Opéra Ballet and Flight Pattern for The Royal Ballet. For Ms. Pite’s company, Kidd Pivot, he designed Dark Matters, The Tempest Replica, Betroffenheit and most recently, Revisor.

Jay Gower Taylor Scenic Designer, Angels’ Atlas Tom Visser has been working since 2004 as a lighting designer in productions by Johan Inger, Crystal Pite, Stijn Celis, Medhi Walerski, Peeping Tom and Alexander Ekman. His lighting designs have been seen in Nederlands Dans Theater, Royal Opera House, Sydney Dance Company and Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, among others. In addition to his work for the stage, Mr. Visser has created art installations and projects with interactive media.

Nancy Bryant is an established costume designer living in Vancouver and works widely designing for dance, theatre, opera and television. Ms. Bryant’s previous collaborations with Crystal Pite have had much notoriety in Europe, UK, US and across Canada, including Body and Soul and The Seasons’ Canon (Paris Opera), Flight Pattern (Royal Opera House), Partita, Parade and Plot Point (Nederlands Dans Theater), Revisor, The Tempest Replica (Kidd Pivot) and Betroffenheit (Kidd Pivot/Electric Co.). Costume designs for theatre include collaborations with artists and groundbreaking directors Morris Panych (The Overcoat: A Musical Tailoring, amongst many since 1996), Kim Collier (Tear the Curtain, Angels in America, Hamlet), Jonathon Young (Betroffenheit, Revisor) and Stan Douglas (Helen Lawrence). Costume design credits for television include Legend of Earthsea, A Wrinkle in Time, The Snow Queen and Snow White. Ms.Bryant is the recipient of the 2020 BC Achievement Foundation Award of Distinction, a Leo Award and twelve Jessie Richardson Awards. She proudly shares Olivia Awards for Best New Dance Production (2017 and 2018) and a Toronto Critics Theatre Award with the Pite team.

Spencer Dickhaus is a freelance dancer, teacher, and creator. Most recently Mr. Dickhaus danced with Hofesh Shechter Company on their tour of Grand Finale. Later this year, he will continue to set work by Crystal Pite at Zürich Opera Ballet. As a teacher he has worked with Nederlands Dans Theater, Nuova Officina della Danza (Torino) and Princess Grace Academy (Monaco). For seven seasons (2012 – 2019), he was a member of Nederlands Dans Theater where he had the privilege of working with internationally recognized choreographers including Crystal Pite, Hofesh Shechter, Jiří Kylián, Alexander Ekman, Franck Chartier, Gabriela Carrizo, Sharon Eyal, Gai Behar, Johan Inger, Paul Lightfoot and Sol Leon. He graduated with a BFA from The Juilliard School in 2012 after completing the LINES Ballet Training Program in San Francisco. Mr. Dickhaus currently lives in The Hague, Netherlands.

Ballet and music have been equally influential in Ms. Seletskaja’s life since early childhood. Parallel to a dancing career that spanned 15 years during which she performed with the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Staatsballett Berlin, Zürich Ballet and the Estonian National Ballet, Ms. Seletskaja continued her musical studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and privately. First honing her conducting skills with the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Ms. Seletskaja has been pursuing a full-time conducting career since 2016. Born in Estonia, Ms. Seletskaja first studied piano and then violin. She was influenced by such conducting teachers as James Tuggle, Music Director of Stuttgart Ballet, celebrated conductor Paavo Järvi and Rodolfo Saglimbeni. She worked as assistant to the Music Director of the Casco Phil, former Flemish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, and Stuttgart Ballet Orchestra and made her official conducting debut with Stuttgart Ballet in La Fille mal gardée, followed by performances of Mayerling. Ms. Seletskaja recently made her conducting debut at the National Ballet of Georgia and Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra. She will make her first appearance next season with Ballet de Santiago. Jeff Morris joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1995. Born in Toronto, he studied technical theatre production and administration at Ryerson’s Theatre School. From 1990 to 1995 he was Production Stage Manager for Toronto Dance Theatre, including the company’s debuts in Berlin, Warsaw, Tokyo and at the Joyce Theater. He was Production Stage Manager for Dancers for Life (1991 – 1997), Stage Manager for Theatre Passe-Muraille (Never Swim Alone) and for the Fringe Festival of Independent Dance Artists. Since joining the National Ballet, he has stage-managed a wide range of the company’s unique classical and contemporary repertoire, including the world premieres of James Kudelka’s The Four Seasons, Cinderella and An Italian Straw Hat, Crystal Pite’s Emergence and Angels’ Atlas, and Guillaume Côté’s Le Petit Prince and Frame by Frame (with Robert Lepage). Company premieres include John Neumeier’s The Seagull, A Streetcar Named Desire, Nijinsky and Anna Karenina and Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale. He is an adjunct faculty member at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre and Festival Co-Director for dance:made in Canada/fait au Canada. Liliane Stilwell joined The National Ballet of Canada in 2015 and has stage managed The Merry Widow, Onegin, Giselle, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio. Previously she served as stage manager for the Canadian Opera Company for 22 years. Highlights include Don Quixote, Barber of Seville, Lucia di Lammermore, La Cenerentola, Otello, Marriage of Figaro, Götterdämmerung (complete Ring Cycle), Macbeth, La Bohème, Eugene Onegin, Madama Butterfly and was part of the team that took Oedipus Rex to the Edinburgh International Festival. She was production stage manager for Grease and stage manager for Robin Hood and Cinderella at the Elgin Theatre, Dirty Dancing at the Royal Alexandra Theatre and Hairspray at the Princess of Wales Theatre. Other credits include Tom Jones, Speed-The-Plow, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Big River, Carousel, Me and My Girl and Roar of the Greasepaint – Smell of the Crowd. Ms. Stilwell has stage managed several industrial shows in Canada and the US.

The National Ballet Orchestra The National Ballet of Canada is privileged to have its own full Orchestra with over 60 members. The Orchestra has performed in each of the National Ballet’s seasons and is led by Music Director and Principal Conductor David Briskin. The company’s first Music Director was George Crum who, along with Founder Celia Franca, was a pioneer of the company. Mr. Crum held the position from the company’s inception in 1951 to 1984, when he was appointed Music Director Emeritus. The Orchestra was led by Ermanno Florio from 1985 to 1990. Ormsby Wilkins was Music Director and Principal Conductor from 1990 to 2006. The National Ballet of Canada Orchestra has toured extensively with the company through Canada, the US and Europe. Over the years, the Orchestra has received much acclaim from audiences and critics alike and has recorded two CDs of Michael Torke’s compositions for The Contract (The Pied Piper) and An Italian Straw Hat. The Orchestra made their concert debut at Koerner Hall on April 3, 2012, in celebration of the company’s 60th anniversary.
