Welcome to an Exciting Programme of Dance by Hope Muir
Welcome to our winter mixed programme, featuring new work by Choreographic Associate Alysa Pires and Principal Dancer Siphesihle November, who are making their main stage debuts with The National Ballet of Canada. Supporting Alysa and Siphe as they develop their choreographic voices has been so inspiring and I can’t wait to share their innovational creations with you. This is also a significant occasion for Principal Dancer Jillian Vanstone, who is retiring with select performances of Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain, a company premiere. Jill has been a magical stage presence for 22 years and her choice of After the Rain reflects her deep respect for Chris as a collaborator and her wish to find authenticity and connection in her final performances. It’s a wonderful way for Jill to experience this milestone in her career. Our programme concludes with Kenneth MacMillan’s ragtime classic Elite Syncopations, which entered our repertoire in 1978 and has since become a trademark work. We’ve been fortunate to have Artistic Director Emerita Karen Kain back this season to share her first-hand knowledge of Elite with a new generation of artists, adding considerably to the excitement and fun. There is so much to delight in with this ballet and I hope you enjoy every moment.

The National Ballet of Canada’s creative home is on the sacred and traditional territories of the Anishinabek, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat. We acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaty signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa peoples. We support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The National Ballet of Canada is grateful to have the opportunity to work, dance and create on these lands and we thank the past, present and future caretakers of this land for their stewardship. The land we are performing on today has been home to dance and storytelling traditions of Indigenous people since time immemorial. As we celebrate the return of our beloved art form, we recognize that colonialism and intergenerational trauma has silenced Indigenous artists for far too long. With this in mind, we encourage you to experience and support the work of the many extraordinary Indigenous dance artists working in Canada today. The National Ballet of Canada recently had the opportunity to collaborate with Tribal Vision Dance, Red Sky Performance and DNA Stage on a variety of projects and we hope you will follow their work at the links below: Tribal Vision Dance tribalvisiondance.com @tribalvisiondance Red Sky Performance redskyperformance.com @redskyperformance DNA Stage dnastage.ca @dnastage

Kenneth MacMillan created Elite Syncopations for The Royal Ballet in 1974 when he was the Artistic Director there. The score features ragtime favourites by Scott Joplin and other composers of the era, played by an onstage band. Flirtatious with an air of spontaneity, the choreography is influenced by social dances of the 1920s. Viewed through a contemporary lens, Elite shows the influence of Black history and culture in its music and choreography. The National Ballet’s equity partner Theresa Ruth Howard examined these cultural references in a company-wide presentation that she has since captured in an article, which is available by scanning this code.

Jillian Vanstone Says Farewell
Congratulations to Principal Dancer Jillian Vanstone on a beautiful 22-year career with The National Ballet of Canada. She will appear in Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain, acquired by the company in her honour, and Elite Syncopations. Jillian is a luminous artist with an ease of movement that defies the difficulty of her many leading roles. She dances with exquisite clarity as Princess Aurora, generosity as the Sugar Plum Fairy and youthful wonder as Alice in Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a role that led to her promotion to Principal Dancer in 2011. A consummate professional, Jillian has been an example of hard work and dedication for her fellow dancers and she has enriched the artistic life of the National Ballet immeasurably. We wish her continued success and happiness in the adventures ahead. Thank you, Jillian, for your legacy of unforgettable performances!

Two Main Stage Debuts: Skyward and On Solid Ground The Winter Mixed Programme celebrates the talent of two young creators in Choreographic Associate Alysa Pires and Principal Dancer Siphesihle November, who are debuting their first main stage works for The National Ballet of Canada, Skyward and On Solid Ground. Both are optimistic, energetic works that feel representative of the upward trajectory of their creators’ careers. “Skyward feels like taking off,” says Pires. “A burst of energy and then a moment of weightlessness. The suspension right before you fall… or fly! It was the first new creation that many of us had worked on after lockdown and the energy and excitement of being back in the studio really influenced the movement. I wanted to bottle that feeling.” Describing On Solid Ground, November says, “I wanted to explore what it means to find joy in dance and how we translate the joy and internal self-awareness and self-exploration of the body and spirit for the audience. Sometimes you get glimpses of it – you’re so caught in the spirit of it that you forget about what it looks like. I wanted to translate that in the choreography.” Congratulations to Alysa and Siphesihle on their exciting debuts!
