Welcome to The Sleeping Beauty by Hope Muir
Rudolf Nureyev’s lavish staging of The Sleeping Beauty entered The National Ballet of Canada repertoire in 1972, launching an unprecedented period of international touring and acclaim. It was the most ambitious production the young company had ever performed and it galvanized everyone, from the promising dancers who soaked up Nureyev’s coaching to the generous donors who mortgaged their homes to help with the costs. Now, 50 years later and The Sleeping Beauty has lost none of its challenge, elegance or allure. Full of exhilarating dance, Nureyev’s production retains much of Marius Petipa’s original choreography from 1890 while expanding the lead role of Prince Florimund to a degree that had not been seen before. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed some of his finest ballet music for The Sleeping Beauty and the timeless story of good prevailing over evil can be felt in each note. The Sleeping Beauty is at once the pinnacle of classical ballet tradition and a deeply personal work for this company, one whose legacy of excellence and collaboration still resonates. I’m thrilled that you’re joining the generations of audiences who have delighted in its splendour. Welcome to The Sleeping Beauty!
With gratitude,

The National Ballet of Canada is grateful to have the opportunity to work, dance and create on these lands and we thank the past, present and future caretakers of this land for their stewardship. The land we are performing on today has been home to dance and storytelling traditions of Indigenous people since time immemorial. As we celebrate the return of our beloved art form, we recognize that colonialism and intergenerational trauma has silenced Indigenous artists for far too long. With this in mind, we encourage you to experience and support the work of the many extraordinary Indigenous dance artists working in Canada today. The Sleeping Beauty’s 50th Anniversary A Reflection by Veronica Tennant
10
When Rudolf Nureyev strode into The National Ballet of Canada’s rehearsal studio to stage his production of The Sleeping Beauty, his entrance was much anticipated by us dancers. He appeared, the grandest of princes, the embodiment of the living legend, the original superstar. It was the summer of 1972. We had just returned from the company’s first European tour, deeply significant for then Artistic Director, Celia Franca, who had triumphantly taken us back to London, England, where she was born. In the incredibly brief span of three and a half weeks that August, we plunged into learning Rudolf’s complex and challenging version of the great classic. It was intense, exhausting yet exhilarating because to be taught by Rudolf – to be cajoled and inspired by his example – revealed a dazzlingly unique vision of dance infused with excellence and passion, the keys to his greatness. There were many firsts in the months that followed, from opening at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa to appearing in every major city across the US. Four months later, I found myself onstage as Princess Aurora on the National Ballet’s opening night at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. With Rudolf, we, “his Canadians”, came of age. And how we grew! He woke us, as dancers, with the kiss that changed our lives. And now 2022 – how can it be that we are celebrating a 50th anniversary? With memories reinvigorated every season that The Sleeping Beauty has been danced, I’ve come to understand how meticulously researched, how brilliantly conceived, how imaginatively staged this production is. And how right it is, that my magnificent friend Karen Kain, whom Rudolf championed, is the inspiring force staging this momentous anniversary production. I am sure that Rudolf would approve – her spirit, her gifts and her chosen dancers, who with brilliant artistry rejuvenate the balletic legacy that is The Sleeping Beauty. – Veronica Tennant, C.C. | Principal Dancer, The National Ballet of Canada (1964 – 1989), Filmmaker, Author, Producer/Director Ms. Tennant’s latest film, Christopher Plummer: A Memoir, can be screened on the Hot Docs OnDemand platform until April 28 veronicatennant.com Opposite: Rudolf Nureyev and Veronica Tennant in The Sleeping Beauty (1972). Synopsis Prologue A Room Inside the Palace The scene opens on a lavish court setting of the mid-16th century where King Florestan and his Queen are celebrating the christening of their baby daughter, Princess Aurora. Beautiful fairies arrive, bringing gifts and good wishes to the baby princess. Catalubutte, the master of ceremonies responsible for compiling the guest list, remembers that he has forgotten to invite the evil fairy Carabosse who suddenly arrives during the festivities. Carabosse is furious at being slighted and declaring that she will be avenged she predicts that one day Princess Aurora shall prick her finger and die. At that moment the beautiful Lilac Fairy appears and alters the curse by promising that the Princess shall not die but fall asleep for 100 years, only to be awakened by the kiss of a prince. Still distraught, the King forbids anyone to bring sharp needles into the court for fear that Princess Aurora will come to harm. Act I The Palace Garden As the court prepares for Princess Aurora’s 16th birthday, Catalubutte discovers some old women knitting with sharp spindles. The King orders they be executed for breaking his decree but the Queen persuades him to spare them. The birthday celebrations begin and young girls dance with their partners, carrying beautiful garlands of flowers. Princess Aurora descends the grand staircase and is presented to four Princes who are seeking her hand in marriage. She dances with each of them and they in turn present her with a gift of roses. Carabosse, disguised as an old woman, arrives at the birthday celebration and gives Princess Aurora a bouquet of flowers in which a spindle is concealed. She pricks her finger on the sharp spindle and collapses. Guided by the Lilac Fairy, Princess Aurora is carried into the palace by the courtiers. There the Lilac Fairy casts a spell over the entire court, causing everyone to fall asleep and a thick forest to grow around the palace.

Act II Scene 1: One Hundred Years Later Prince Florimund and his courtiers are in the forest hunting for deer. He becomes melancholic and sends everyone away so that he may be alone. In his solitude, he is visited by the Lilac Fairy who learns that he is looking for love. She tells him of an enchanted palace and the sleeping princess who lies there. A beautiful vision of Princess Aurora appears before Prince Florimund and she dances for him. He falls in love with his vision of the princess and boards a magical boat to search for her. Scene 2: The Awakening Carabosse, now old and grey, continues to spin her wicked web on a spinning wheel. With the arrival of Prince Florimund, her thread breaks and she finally collapses, overpowered by goodness and virtue. Inside the palace, Prince Florimund passes immobile courtiers, still asleep in the same positions as when they were put under the spell one hundred years earlier. Coming upon the sleeping princess, the Prince recognizes his true love and kisses her. Magically, she awakens from her 100 year sleep and the entire court is restored to its earlier splendour. The King and Queen approve the betrothal of Princess Aurora to their hero, Prince Florimund. Act III The Wedding in the Palace Ballroom Catalubutte is once again busy, arranging the court for the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund. The scene opens with a glorious Sarabande led by the King and Queen. This is followed by dances performed by fairy tale characters, including the Pas de Cinq of the Jewels: Gold, Silver, Emerald and Diamonds, the Bluebird and Princess Florine and Puss in Boots with the White Pussycat. Descending the grand staircase, Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund arrive and declare their love with a romantic Grand Pas de Deux.
