James Kudelka

THE MAGIC OF CINDERELLA!

James Kudelka’s Cinderella is a joy from start to finish – musically, visually and choreographically. Created for The National Ballet of Canada in 2004, this stylish production is part of James’ legacy with the company and it reflects his unique gifts as an influential voice in Canadian dance.

James has made an art of balletic storytelling, often refracting well-known stories through a contemporary perspective. His Cinderella is not a traditional rags-to-riches fairy tale, whereby a poor girl is rescued by a wealthy prince. Instead, Cinderella and Prince Charming are on equal footing as they search for authenticity in a superficial world. It’s a wonderful nuance that brings the story into our time.

Cinderella is also incredibly funny. Kudelka uses a light touch with his humour, never pandering or sinking to the ridiculous, but maintaining notes of wit and whimsy throughout. It is such a treat to share this ballet with you in my inaugural season as Artistic Director, particularly as I know how many young people are joining us for the occasion. I hope you will all enjoy the magic of Cinderella!

Warmly,

The National Ballet of Canada’s creative home is on the sacred and traditional territories of the Anishinabek, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat. We acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa peoples. We support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The National Ballet of Canada is grateful to have the opportunity to work, dance and create on these lands and we thank the past, present and future caretakers of this land for their stewardship. The land we are performing on today has been home to dance and storytelling traditions of Indigenous people since time immemorial. We recognize that colonialism and intergenerational trauma has silenced Indigenous artists for far too long. With this in mind, we encourage you to experience and support the work of the many extraordinary Indigenous dance artists working in Canada today.

SYNOPSIS

ACT I

Not so very long ago, in a suburb of a rich and fashionable capital city, a young orphaned woman named Cinderella lived with her Stepmother and two ambitious Stepsisters. Cinderella tried to keep house for this small family but no matter how hard she worked, her Stepsisters flew through the house like whirlwinds and turned any order she might create into chaos. Whenever she had a chance to rest, which was not very often, Cinderella would sit and dream by the hearth or go into her kitchen garden for she always felt happiest amongst the vegetables and herbs.

One day, the Prince’s advisors decided to have a ball for all the well-born, well-to-do young people of the land so the Prince could choose a bride. Cinderella’s Stepsisters were accomplished social climbers and somehow managed to wrangle invitations for themselves. Because they wanted to present themselves in the most glamorous and fashionable light, they hired the most expensive and well-trained dressmakers, makeup artists and escorts from the very best agency in the city; the best agency they could afford.

Once the Stepsisters were on their way and Cinderella had settled in at the hearth, something very magical indeed happened (unless, of course, Cinderella was only dreaming). Her Fairy Godmother appeared and summoned the creatures of the garden – Blossom, Petal, Moss and Twig – as well as the moths, butterflies and other insects who mysteriously transform themselves from one shape to another as the seasons change. Each creature brought something for Cinderella to wear to the ball but her Fairy Godmother warned Cinderella to return home by midnight lest something dreadful happen to her. It’s not safe in palaces late at night.

ACT II

In the palace, the Prince was very uncomfortable. He was depressed by the chic young women vying for his attention, seeking fame and riches. He felt like a complete outsider at his own party. All the Prince really wanted was a quiet life with a woman he could love deeply and he saw no such person until Cinderella and her attendants arrived. The Prince and Cinderella instantly fell in love but all too soon it was midnight.

As the clock struck 12, the courtiers underwent a horrible transformation into Pumpkinheads, attacking the terrified Cinderella. In her desperate attempts to escape, Cinderella lost all of her finery except one of her beautiful new slippers. The other slipper was all that the Prince could find to remind him of the woman he had come to love so suddenly.

ACT III

The Prince and his aides searched all around the world to find the woman who had lost that slipper. They found countries where women wore wooden shoes, boots with blades for gliding on the ice, long thin wooden slats for sliding over snow, riding boots and every kind of footwear you can imagine but never did they find a woman who could wear the slipper that the Prince’s ideal woman had lost.

Meanwhile, Cinderella was back home in the suburbs where the kitchen itself had been miraculously transformed into a place of order and her sisters didn’t seem to be such a nuisance anymore. But all she had to remind her of the ball was that slipper. She couldn’t bear to take it off but, not wanting to draw attention to it, she covered it up with a sock.

Finally it occurred to one of the Prince’s aides to check out the suburbs of the capital city just in case they’d missed anyone. And there, in his own back yard, and quite literally in Cinderella’s own back garden, the Prince and Cinderella found each other again. They had a fairly fashionable afternoon wedding – even Princes can’t completely ignore the conventions – but then, instead of a lavish honeymoon abroad, the Prince and Cinderella did what each of them would love best for the rest of their lives, they retired quietly to the garden where they would always find peace and love in making their garden grow.

THROUGH A NEW LENS Examining Ballet for A New Era

As part of the global shift toward improved Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, The National Ballet of Canada is committed to examining ballet practices, traditions, choreography and stories in partnership with cultural consultants and creative collaborators to lead positive change in dance. Hope Muir, Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director, has prioritized this work as part of her planning each season, as the company applies a new lens to the repertoire with a growing understanding of issues around representation, cultural appropriation and other barriers to inclusion. There is no destination for this work – it is an ongoing process of listening and learning. However, the impact is evident in our Winter and Spring seasons, reflecting a collaborative effort to apply key learnings and share outstanding dance for today.

James Kudelka is among today’s most versatile and innovative dance artists. He has choreographed for many of the world’s leading ballet companies and for smaller contemporary troupes. His creative range reflects his eclectic musical interests, command of diverse movement idioms and commitment to working collaboratively with artists from other disciplines. James is renowned for distinctive versions of such classics as The Nutcracker and Cinderella – signature works of The National Ballet of Canada where he served as Artistic Director (1996 – 2005). Equally, James excels in making smaller-scaled dances that are rich in psychological implication and human drama. Born in Newmarket, Ontario and trained at Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS), James began choreographing as a student and continued throughout his dancing years with the National Ballet (1972 – 1981) and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (1981 – 1990). He began an affiliation with Toronto’s Citadel + Compagnie in 2006 and has been resident choreographer since 2008 where he has experimented with cross-disciplinary collaborations. As a teacher, James has worked with Vancouver Arts Umbrella, Toronto Metropolitan University and NBS and he continues to work internationally as a choreographer. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2005 and is among the 2020 Dance Collection Danse Hall of Fame inductees.

David Boechler has worked across the country and internationally, with five seasons at Stratford Festival (Cabaret, South Pacific and My One and Only), and eight at Shaw Festival. During his tenure, he created lighting designs for many productions, including Aszure Barton’s Watch her, James Kudelka’s Cinderella, Matjash Mrozewski’s A Delicate Battle and Jean-Pierre Perreault’s The Comforts of Solitude. Christopher’s lighting designs are in the repertoires of ballet companies across the globe, including American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and West Australia Ballet. Make the Extraordinary Possible COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

In my time as Executive Director, I’ve been fortunate to witness many extraordinary experiences during The National Ballet of Canada’s community events and initiatives and I want to share of some of them with you.

A year ago, we held our first-ever mainstage

Relaxed Performance structured to be accessible and welcoming to people who are Neurodiverse and members of the d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Disability Communities. Families came to see a performance of Act III of The Sleeping Beauty with various modifications in the theatre setting and additional supports in place. There was such a sense of overwhelming joy on the faces of so many of these audience members who can often find access to the arts very limited. I was pleased that we were able to share our artform in a relaxed environment where the families felt celebrated and cared for. And I’m proud that we are offering a Relaxed Performance of Act II of Cinderella and enhancing the experience based on our learnings from last year.

The digital stage became a priority during the pandemic, as it was the only means by which we could stay connected to audiences. In fact, our first meaningful leverage of the digital stage happened long before Covid-19, when we began livestreaming our YOU dance programme across Canada. In 2022, we reached schools in every province and territory, uniting Canadian children

through a shared passion for dance. I loved the enthusiasm of students joining us from every corner of the country, including Qikiqtani School, Iqaluit, Nunavut. In real time, we were able to answer questions from the students, who inspired me with their curiosity and joyful engagement with our teaching artists. To see so many young people, separated by great geographic distances being brought together to experience dance was incredibly moving.

At the National Ballet, we believe that accessibility means several things – that people can access and enjoy dance anywhere and everywhere; to ensure that everyone feels welcome and to eliminate or minimize financial barriers.

We rely entirely on you to help fund these vital programmes and initiatives, most of which are free for participants (three programmes include only a nominal fee). Thank you to our donors and sponsors for helping provide extraordinary experiences open to all.

If you wish to inspire more people in the community through the joy and expressiveness of dance, I hope you consider joining our donor family today.

YOUR DONATION FUNDS COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING THAT PROMOTES ARTISTIC EXPRESSION AND EXPERIENCES AND PROVIDES A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL.

By supporting the National Ballet’s initiatives, you make these extraordinary experiences possible:

• YOU dance Workshops, Performances and an annual Residency within the Greater Toronto Area

• A National Livestream to reach students from coast to coast to coast

• Invitations to attend a special performance at the Four Seasons Centre through Share the Magic

• Outdoor events and performances at Harbourfront Centre

• Student Matinees and Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Workshops
