The National Ballet of Canada’s creative home is on the sacred and traditional territories of the Anishinabek, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Haudenosaunee and Huron-Wendat. We acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa peoples. We support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The National Ballet of Canada is grateful to have the opportunity to work, dance and create on these lands and we thank the past, present and future caretakers of this land for their stewardship. The land we are performing on today has been home to dance and storytelling traditions of Indigenous people since time immemorial. We recognize that colonialism and intergenerational trauma has silenced Indigenous artists for far too long. With this in mind, we encourage you to experience and support the work of the many extraordinary Indigenous dance artists working in Canada today. WELCOME TO THE 2022/23 SEASON!

Welcome to the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts and The National Ballet of Canada’s first complete season of dance since the pandemic began. It’s so rewarding to share this rich and varied repertoire with you in my inaugural season as Artistic Director. We are all filled with a sense of momentum and the feeling that a new chapter has finally begun.

The opening ballet of the November Season is the Canadian premiere of The Collective Agreement by Alonzo King, an accomplished choreographer I have long admired. The physicality of Alonzo’s work and his nurturing, almost spiritual approach in the studio challenges the dancers both mentally and physically. I am so grateful that the company, and now our audiences, can share this experience.

Joining The Collective Agreement is the mainstage debut of Vanesa G. R. Montoya’s Crepuscular which was first performed in August 2021 as a part of our Sharing the Stage residency at the Harbourfront Centre. The final ballet on this programme has not been performed by the National Ballet for over 30 years; Kenneth MacMillan’s poetic Concerto is a work in which the full company comes together to celebrate the purity of the art form.

Thank you for joining us in celebration of these inspired works.

A PLACE WITHOUT BORDERS: THE COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT

The National Ballet of Canada’s mainstage season kicks off with a trio of works led by The Collective Agreement, an exciting first acquisition from American choreographer Alonzo King.

Created for San Francisco Ballet in 2018, the work explores King’s idea of “oneness” as the foundation for a healthy community and a corrective for divisive notions of difference.

"We begin life with ‘me’ – myself, what I want, my likes and dislikes,” says King. “With maturity and experience we evolve into ‘we, the collective'. And with more maturity, depth, expansion and experience we emerge into the ‘oneness’. We have to come to a place where there are no borders.”

The Collective Agreement introduces Toronto audiences to the fluidity and power of King’s aesthetic and, for the dancers, to his collaborative approach in the studio, honed over 40 years at his San Francisco-based company Alonzo King LINES Ballet and with artists all over the world.

“I want to foster a positive and nurturing environment for my dancers and that starts with artists like Alonzo whose instinct and approach embodies this," says Hope Muir. “It’s very inspiring to watch him interact with

these incredible artists and to see them respond and develop through both his choreography and mentorship.”

The Collective Agreement is set to an original score by award-winning jazz musician Jason Moran, a frequent collaborator of King’s. Their partnership sets music and movement in dialogue, with each discipline enriching and showing the intricacies of the other.

“Working with Jason was like finding the partner that I had wanted for a long time,” says King. “It is a wonderful, auspicious moment when you have someone who is going to build a world with you from the very beginning.”

The Collective Agreement is followed by Vanesa G. R. Montoya’s Crepuscular (2021), a meditation on the emotional landscape of twilight set to the music of Frédéric Chopin. The programme closes with a work of quiet beauty and humour, Kenneth MacMillan’s Concerto (1966), which embodies the company’s joy and sense of togetherness as this new season begins.

are hallmarks of Kenneth MacMillan’s  Concerto , his beloved abstract ballet in three movements. Created for Deutsche Oper Ballet in 1966,  Concerto  channels the exuberance and variation in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major, with the first and third movements serving as lively bookends to the quiet pas de deux of the second. A fresh and optimistic work from the one of the 20th century’s finest choreographers,  Concerto  was last performed by the National Ballet in 1990.

CELEBRATING THE 2021/22 SEASON

The National Ballet of Canada’s Annual General Meeting on October 19 provided an opportunity for us to reflect on the highlights of the 2021/22 season and to appreciate everyone who came together in support of a company and art form we all treasure. It was simply amazing to watch the dancers at work in the studio, performing brilliantly onstage and celebrating career milestones with colleagues and friends. Since the earliest days of the pandemic, we all yearned for these experiences.

The 2021/22 season turned a spotlight on the National Ballet’s determination to make an unforgettable return to live performance. Despite many initial unknowns, we were able to reach more than 106,215 audience members over the course of the season.

These achievements are the result of a collective effort within our community to rebuild from the pandemic. Our donors and audiences saw us through the worst of those early days and they continue to provide invaluable support today, giving generously to our donor programmes, renewing subscriptions and staying with us through setbacks. Thank you for all that you do to support and grow the art of dance in Canada through this fabulous company.
