Annual Report 2022/23
HOPE MUIR’S INAUGURAL SEASON The 2022/23 season opened the next chapter for The National Ballet of Canada, introducing brilliant creators to the repertoire, strengthening our impact in the community and achieving record attendance as audiences returned to live performances. With the pandemic behind us, we were able to pursue creative collaborations, new productions and company premieres that expand the language of dance. Two of these, Wayne McGregor’s MADDADDAM and David Dawson’s Anima Animus, received Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations for Outstanding Production, with the company receiving a nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in Anima. We also collaborated for the first time with venerated choreographer Alonzo King and rising star Rena Butler. After four long years, we returned to national and international touring with appearances at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and, for the first time in 15 years, at New York City Center. This was also an important season for the National Ballet in the community. We returned to in-person YOU dance programming, hosted a second full-length Relaxed Performance with enhanced accommodations and deepened our relationships with local dance artists through CreativAction and Sharing the Stage. As always, our donors make all of this possible. Ticket sales cover only a portion

of our expenses and we are so grateful for the generosity of our donor community who made gifts so that we could plan, create and present a season of world class dance for a wide audience. After the long pandemic, it has been a joy to see our donors reconnect with our artists in person, to experience live performances once again and to feel the thrill of the curtain rising on what their investment makes possible for our artists, our company and our community. Now, we turn our attention to an exciting future – one that is only possible with your continued passionate advocacy and support. With gratitude,
Hope Muir, Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director

LEADERSHIP AT HOME & AROUND THE WORLD
Our Artistic Director and Executive Director serve as co-CEOs and their partnership is vital to the success of The National Ballet of Canada at home and around the world. In addition to the dayto-day planning and operations, Hope Muir and Barry Hughson represent the National Ballet as leaders in the local, national and international arts communities. This past year, Hope represented The National Ballet of Canada at Repositioning Ballet – a convening of artistic dance leaders from around the globe, hosted by Het Nationale Ballet in Amsterdam. In January of 2023, Barry joined 22 executive leaders from nine countries for the Executive Dance Leadership Summit, a biennial convening he established in 2015 in partnership with DanceUSA and The Royal Ballet. The 2023 Summit was hosted by former Canadian Opera Company CEO Alexander Neef, now the CEO of the Paris Opera. Barry also serves on the Advancement Committee of the International Society of Performing Arts. Closer to home, Barry serves on the Steering Committee of the Canadian Arts Coalition, and Hope and Barry are members of the Canadian Arts Summit.

THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA, ENDOWMENT FOUNDATION MESSAGE FROM DAVID MACDONALD, CHAIR
The National Ballet of Canada, Endowment Foundation was established to support The National Ballet of Canada with stable and predictable funding over the long term. The Endowment is designed to weather volatile times, like those we’ve seen over the past three years. We are proud that the Endowment Foundation has maintained, and increased, its annual operating disbursement to the National Ballet to support the company through the pandemic, renewed inflation and rising geopolitical tensions. For the 2022/23 season, the Endowment made a grant of $3.8 million, representing 9.8% of 2022/23 expenditures. Thank you to everyone who believes in the National Ballet and the art of dance, and who have made investments in both the short-term and long-term success of this extraordinary organization.
