JUNE HIGHLIGHT

BRYN TERFEL THE VOICE OF THE VALLEYS

A

funny thing happened the young Bryn Terfel Jones on the way to his spectacular opera career. Aged 19, he applied for a place in a Cardiff music college but received a reply addressed to “Miss Terfel’’. The fact that a Welsh college did not know Bryn was a man’s name so incensed the native Welsh speaker that he took himself off to London and a place in the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The incident now amuses the charismatic Terfel, who sings in the RTÉ Concert Orchestra Signature Series at the National Concert Hall on June 22 next. Cardiff may have lost out, but he still speaks in glowing terms of his school music teachers in Caernarfonshire, in north Wales. “They provided the key that opened the door for me,’’ he says. 6

The episode has a humorous side, but it also pinpoints the deep-rooted convictions and single-minded attitude to life. Terfel, who dropped the Jones in favour of his second name because he knew another singer named Bryn Jones, was born into a Welsh-speaking farming family and is immensely proud he has passed this language inheritance on to his three sons. Wherever he travels his passion to return to the hills and valleys of his homeland has never wavered. At the Guildhall, the new kid on the baritone block was soon making his considerable presence felt by winning prestigious competitions, bursaries and awards. However, his road to stardom really began seriously in his graduation year of 1989 when he won both the Kathleen

Ferrier Memorial Award and the Gold Medal. In the same year he was shaded out of first prize in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition in what was known as “the battle of the baritones’’ with the Russian Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Terfel’s single-mindedness has, not surprisingly, landed Terfel in various spots of bother. Not the least of these was the media storm when he pulled out of a much-heralded production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle in Covent Garden in 2007 because his son had sustained a serious finger injury at home. Terfel was subjected to fierce media flak but weathered the storm (though its echoes remain to this day). Not long after, he sang an acclaimed Figaro to ecstatic reviews in New York but then astonished the opera world by announcing he was dropping the role from his repertoire. Don Giovanni soon received a similar dismissal. These had been iconic early-career roles for Terfel and had helped enormously in funding and promoting his career, so there was considerable angst among faithful fans when he decided to move to pastures new through Verdi and Strauss. He was spectacularly successful there too, but the ultimate peak loomed large in the distance and when he took on his first performance as Wotan in Wagner’s Das Rheingold in 2004 it was described by one critic as “a case of the emperor finally claiming his throne’’. It comes as no surprise that Terfel singles out the Welsh National Opera production of Die Meistersinger two years ago as one of the proudest occasions in his career. “It was in Cardiff and the well over half the cast was Welsh-speaking. It was the first time I walked into a rehearsal room speaking my mother tongue. I was so happy and proud to be part of such a company. It was like a breath of fresh air from the Welsh mountains.’’ Towering and commanding are now the kind of words used to describe Terfel’s performances in the Wagnerian world of gods and goblins, but he is no opera snob and has his enormous feet

firmly planted on the ground with his eyes on his bank balance when it comes to crossover singing. He recalls: “When I was in Munich doing the Flying Dutchman, I was in an opera house that had 3,000 to 4,000 seats while Paul Potts was in the city’s Olympic stadium selling maybe 15,000 tickets because the Nessum Dorma he sang had been used in an advert for a mobile phone network in Germany. That’s fine by me. Paul obviously got into the minds and hearts of people so he is entitled to enjoy the fruits of that.’’ Because of his physique, it is often remarked that had Terfel not opted for singing, he might have performed a leading role of a different kind in that other great Welsh passion – rugby. Surprisingly, soccer is his favourite ball game, stemming back to those glory years of Manchester United when George Best became his football idol. He is also an enthusiastic golfer. There is no doubt that Wales is in the heart and soul of Bryn Terfel. He established an eclectic music festival there (which unfortunately failed) and is a patron of the Welsh language and culture movement. The National Eisteddfod has admitted him to the Gorsedd of Bards, which dates back to 1792. He has also founded his own charity foundation and is president of Shelter Cymru, a charity for the homeless. Bryn Terfel CBE may yet end up as King of Wales. A couple of years ago a small island off its coast named him honorary monarch of all he surveyed. He’s a very big chap, so you never know! by Dick O’Riordan, classical music columnist with the Sunday Business Post.

Bryn Terfel performs with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra as part of its Signature Series at the National Concert Hall on June 22. Tickets: ¤34.50 - ¤69.50. 10% discount available for groups of 10 or more. Tel 01 417 0000 or www.nch.ie

ESB LIVE: BELL X1 CHOP CHOP ALBUM PREMIERE SHOW

Bell X1

SATURDAY 29 JUNE 8PM The National Concert Hall Dublin is pleased to announce this special show as part of its ESB Live Series with Bell X1 to premiere their luminous new album, Chop Chop. Chop Chop is a bold, unique and beautiful new direction for the band produced by Peter Katis (The National) and Thomas Bartlett (The Gloaming). To mark the release the band will perform the entire album in sequence before taking an interval and returning to play selections from their beloved back catalogue. Chop Chop will be available in stores on June 28th. Last summer the three of us got together in Dave’s studio and demoed 15 songs, I think it was. We returned to simpler times, when all around here was fields - piano and guitar, bass & drums... less computers and noises from boxes. Shrink the palette! We’ve loved some of the records that Peter Katis has made in the last few years, and the cut of Thomas Bartlett’s playing with The Gloaming, so when the stars aligned for two weeks in January we made a record together. JULY HIGHLIGHT

BRYAN FERRY: AN APPRECIATION

A

any big-name musicians find a template and cling to it, limpet-like, for the remainder of their careers. A less common breed appear allergic to standing still and their need to experiment remains steadfast. Bryan Ferry is such an artist. For more than 40 years, the 24

art-school graduate and style icon from Newcastle has confounded expectations, hopscotching gleefully from one genre to the next, but rarely at the expense of quality. From the hugely influential avant-garde rock of early 1970s Roxy Music, through to the sumptuous,

NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie no booking fees

immaculately produced pop of a decade later and on to gloriously eclectic solo endeavours and choice collaborations, Bryan Ferry has rewarded the judicious listener time and again. Just think of the songs: There’s the giddy, futuristic pop of Virginia Plain, the stately majesty of Avalon and the pristine radio-friendly appeal of Slave to Love. There are curveballs like the unsettling In Every Dream Home a Heartache with its dark eroticism as well as zeitgeist-defining favourites such as Love is the Drug, whose glorious, cacophonous racket still sounds vital all these years later. Then there have been the much-lauded reinterpretations of other people’s songs, including the better-than-the-original covers of John Lennon’s Jealous Guy and Wilbert Harrison’s Let’s Stick Together. And, yet, the truly thrilling thing about this hard-to-pigeonhole songwriter is just how many great less heralded compositions there are from every facet of his career. There’s the heartstrings-tugging power of Both Ends Burning and the troubled, contemplative The Space Between from his Roxy days as well as the sublime confessional, Tender is the Night, from the much-regarded Olympia album, a project that saw such luminaries as The Smiths’ Johnny Marr and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood queue up to work with him. And don’t forget his marvellous re-imagining of All Along the Watchtower, from Dylanesque – an album of Bob Dylan covers that would encourage even the most ardent Robert Zimmerman student to reappraise the songs. It’s a reminder of his peerless ability to take even the best known songs and make them his own. “The only songs worth covering are the ones you really love,” he told me when I interviewed him two years ago. “They’re the ones you feel you could have written yourself. Otherwise, what’s the point?”

His latest project sees him tear up the rulebook once more – and attract some of the most euphoric reviews he’s ever had. The Jazz Age is an appropriate title for an album that sees Ferry remake/re-model material from his Roxy and solo back catalogues as big band instrumentals. Not only do songs like Do the Strand and Slave to Love get radically overhauled by The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, but in choosing not to sing, Ferry has opted to give his songs a new lease of life. Comparisons to Duke Ellington in his pomp have come from all quarters. “I started my musical journey listening to a fair bit of jazz, mainly instrumental, and from diverse and contrasting periods,” Ferry says. “I loved the way the great soloists would pick up a tune and shake it up – to go somewhere completely different – and then return gracefully back to the melody, as if nothing had happened.” With the help of arranger Colin Good he has done just that, leading one critic to deduce that it is arguably the most radical album of a radical career. It’s little wonder, too, that his exquisite 1920s renderings of his own material have found their way onto the soundtrack of Baz Luhrman’s recently released big-screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby. F Scott Fitzgerald’s era-defining parable is reaching a whole new audience – and so too is Bryan Ferry’s enduring music. Quite what he has lined up next remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: you will want to be there for the ride. by John Meagher, Irish Independent

4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION WITH DIANNE REEVES QUEEN OF AMERICAN SONG

Dianne Reeves

THURSDAY 4 JULY 8PM More than two generations have passed since jazz stars took on aristocratic titles, otherwise Dianne Reeves would surely be known as The Queen. Possessing a glorious voice and majestic stage presence, she’s one of jazz’s most regal figures; an artist who embodies the music’s enduring values of elegance, class and improvisational poise. Though her jazz roots run deep--pianist/producer George Duke is her cousin--Reeves first hit the road with Brazilian pianist and bandleader Sergio Mendes in the early 1980s, and before long she attracted the attention of Harry Belafonte. She won the Best Jazz Vocal Album Grammy Award for three consecutive releases, an unprecedented feat. She earned another Grammy for the soundtrack of George Clooney’s 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck, which featured her prominently on screen. Making any era she explores her very own realm, Dianne Reeves reigns uncontested as jazz royalty. “There was a period when it looked as if the tradition of Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday was behind us. But with the appearance of singers like Ms. Reeves, those shoes are beginning to be filled. Hallelujah!” - The New York Times

AUGUST HIGHLIGHT

MARTIN HAYES INVITES... JORDI SAVALL’S CELTIC VIOL & TRIÚR WITH DENNIS CAHILL

M

usical tributaries find their own way of intersecting, regardless of the boundaries or limitations we might attempt to impose upon them. Catalonia’s Jordi Savall has had a long and immensely fruitful relationship with early and Baroque music, and has mined its depths with an ear cocked as much to the space, as to the sounds 44

within the music. Martin Hayes, as curator of this concert, traces a natural path to Savall’s door, since both musicians are long practiced in the art of unearthing the essence of a melody line so that it glistens afresh for its (diverse) audiences. East Clare music has had a long and fruitful history before Martin Hayes

NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie no booking fees

lifted a fiddle under his chin, but ever since he did, guided by the listening ear of his late father, P. Joe Hayes and the Tulla Céilí Band, he has breathed new life into its veins, putting a finger on the essence of its lonesome touch, and in the process, lured swathes of new listeners to its doors. For those whose rapt attention was already in thrall of this music, he’s revealed layer after delicate layer in tunes he’s inherited from the late Paddy Fahy, as well as those from his own father and from countless, nameless others in traditional music. Ever since Hayes encountered Jordi Savall’s music for the first time, on the soundtrack to the 1991 Alain Corneau film, Tous Les Matins Du Monde, he was transfixed by the level of sensitivity in Savall’s playing. The refinement and subtlety of Savall’s bowing on the viola de gamba, and its inherent warmth, revitalised the music of French composers, Marin Marais, Sainte Colombe, François Couperin and Jean-Baptiste Lully. Encouraged by his first exposure to Savall’s interpretation of this early music, Martin Hayes was determined to delve deeper into the finer detail of tunes within the Irish tradition. And instinctively, Hayes felt, a natural connection exists between Savall’s reading of early and baroque music and the music of the Irish tradition. Jordi Savall released two albums in 2009 and 2010, The Celtic Viol 1 and 11, which featured airs and dances by Turlough O’Carolan alongside a rich repertoire of traditional Irish and Scottish tunes. Savall’s often stark, bare boned, deeply resonant interpretation of music from the Irish tradition was a further lure for Martin. Here was a Catalan musician who really understood how to populate space with densely-textured yet buoyant sound, much as Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill have re-imagined such traditional tunes as The Pigeon At The Gate and Tell Her I Am. What both musicians unquestionably share is an ability to reach out to that intangible

aspect of the music that, although sometimes born of pain or sadness, has a transcendent quality reflecting a joyous, celebratory undercurrent. And that’s what they call in Clare the ‘lonesome touch’. It demands much of a musician: to set aside his own personal foibles or concerns in order to yield to the needs of a particular piece of music. And anyone who has had the joyous experience of hearing Savall’s reading of ‘Carolan’s Farewell’ or ‘The Lamentations From Owen Roe O’Neill’ (both included on Celtic Viol 1) will recognise the common ground he shares with Hayes in this regard. This concert poses a challenge for both musicians. While each can bask in the respective comfort of their own ensembles, Savall and Hayes relish the prospect of bartering repertoires in this chance encounter. Having the courage to follow the leads which have brought them together, it’s likely that both musicians will mine those authentic soundscapes which characterise their music. Hayes’ choice of Triúr adds further to the intrigue: with a repertoire populated by the infinite riches of Peadar Ó Riada’s compositions, infused by a warm and indefatigable wit, Hayes will encounter Savall at a crossroads where anything is possible. And both musicians have clearly embraced the challenge that this encounter poses for themselves – and for the audience. Some might see such coalitions as unnecessary risk-taking by musicians whose reputations are firmly established. For Savall and Hayes, this concert marks an opportunity to test the elastine qualities of their creative limits, and enjoy the adrenaline rush that fuels such an encounter. by Siobhán Long, The Irish Times

EDUCATION EVENTS JUNE-AUGUST

MUSIC IN HEALTHCARE As part of our portfolio of work in the healthcare sector, we have two very exciting programmes currently running: KIDS CLASSICS Since its inception in 2008, this highly successful initiative has provided interactive workshops to children in hospitals and hospital schools in Dublin, Waterford and Cork. Led by cellist Gráinne Hope and her team of musicians this project aims to give children a chance to interact with music and provide a sense of well-being. This programme is kindly supported by the Community Foundation for Ireland and the National Concert Hall. HEALTH AND HARMONY In October 2012 the National Concert Hall launched a one year project in collaboration with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland called Health and Harmony. The aim of the project is to bring live musicians into four centres in Dublin, Tipperary and Limerick to enhance the quality of life for long and short-term care patients, to inspire expression through music, to develop a framework to support the continued development of music programmes in each setting and to support and encourage the rollout of similar music programmes throughout Ireland in the future. On completion of this programme an open seminar will be hosted by the National Concert Hall to share our experiences and learnings. This project is supported by The Ireland Funds and the National Concert Hall.

TEA DANCE TUNES The National Concert Hall is delighted to partner with Create Louth, the Arts Service of Louth Local Authorities, to present “Tea Dance Tunes” – live classical music concerts – in six communities of older people in Louth during the month of May as part of the month-long Bealtaine Festival, Ireland’s groundbreaking nationwide celebration of creativity as we age and an initiative of Age & Opportunity.
