Education, Community and Outreach Programme Of Events

Welcome to the first programme of events for 2015 of the National Concert Hall’s Education, Community and Outreach (ECO) programme, covering activities from January to March. We’ve been working to develop a vibrant programme for 2015, and we hope to see you at many of our events throughout the year. The ECO programme seeks to engage people with music, to enhance people’s understanding and appreciation of music and music making, and to encourage personal, community and social development through music. We believe that music should be enjoyed by many, and not be the preserve of the few, and that no matter what your age, background or experience, everyone can benefit greatly from engaging with, and learning about, music. We recognise the importance of supporting high-level, high-performing musicians, and we provide many activities in that area, but we also fundamentally believe in the value of the process of music education and learning for everybody; as a National Cultural Institution, we have a duty to play our part in developing this. In the following pages, we hope that there will be something for everyone, remembering that learning is a lifelong process, and there is no time too early or too late to embark on your personal musical adventure. I look forward to welcoming you to an ECO event in the near future.

Education, Community and Outreach Programme Of Events

Our programme for children and families is based on principles of fostering the natural creativity of the child, and of promoting music’s potential to enhance family cohesion. We view children as co-creators of the education process and develop our initiatives to be child centred, and wherever possible, child led. In developing initiatives for families, we encourage engagement with the National Concert Hall and with music in general, as a shared experience. We believe that family cohesion can be enhanced through this process, and so most of our activities in this area include both parents and children as active participants.

Mini Music A growing body of research provides evidence of the long term benefits of music education from very early in a child’s life. We believe in this, and we also believe that it’s a great way to have fun! Mini Music is an action-packed music workshop experience for babies and young children aged 3 months to 8 years old. These 30-minute workshops take place on Saturdays at the National Concert Hall, and seek to provide an immersive learning environment for young children. Carefully designed to suit each of the age groups, workshops are fun and accessible with foot-tapping, memorable tunes. Mini Mini Mini Mini Mini

Education, Community and Outreach Programme Of Events

In our activities aimed towards Schools and Teachers, our goal is to enhance students’ experience of music by adding value to curriculum delivery and development. Building on the great work of our primary and post-primary teachers, we hope to encourage musical engagement within the whole school community and to help further development of musical activity in schools. We also aim to support our teachers by providing continuing professional development opportunities and teaching and learning resources.

Music and Science Programme This programme is inspired by the STEM to STEAM movement, which challenges the educational orthodoxy to include Art (including music) as a central component to the four traditional pillars of education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The first of these workshops will examine how music and physics can be mutually explanatory – participants examine sound, resonance and vibration through an engaging variety of experiments using musical instruments and physics apparatus. For further information please contact education@nch.ie

The Irish Music Project The ECO programme is delighted to support an initiative from Irish traditional music masters, Martin and Ciarán Tourish. This project has been developed to support and promote the understanding and performance of traditional music in the Leaving Certificate Music Syllabus. Using a variety of workshops conducted by prominent figures in traditional music and collaborative performance opportunities for Leaving Certificate music students, the project supports both the theoretical aspects of the syllabus, while preparing students for their exam performance. Music Workshops for Schools These workshops place an emphasis on participation and enjoyment. Nevertheless, participants will learn much from these events informally that will link into many other areas of their music education. Workshops can take place in your school, or in the National Concert Hall as either a dedicated trip, or as part of a school tour. Whole classes or smaller groups are invited to participate in the workshop of their choice. Options include the following: • Percussion – Discover the world of rhythm with a group percussion workshop. Our skilled facilitators will take your group through a rhythmic journey exploring the drumming traditions of West Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean. No previous experience is required, and we can supply all of the instruments. • Singing – This workshop uses the one instrument that we all possess: the voice. Group singing is one of the easiest ways into music participation, and our facilitators are experts at getting everyone involved, joining in, and having a good time. • Song-writing – Designed for those with an interest in writing and recording their own songs, this workshop guides participants through the creative process, culminating in a recording of their own newly crafted piece. Participants collaborate in the writing process, guided by experienced facilitators, and also perform to each other throughout, and at the end of the event. • Gamelan Introduction – Experience the magical sound of the Javanese Gamelan! This unique set of tuned percussion instruments was gifted to the National Concert Hall by the Sultan of Yogyakarta, and is a great way of getting to play music in an ensemble, even with little or no previous experience. Due to the size and number of instruments, this workshop is currently only available at the National Concert Hall. See our Introduction to the Gamelan at the end of this brochure. Indicative price per student (depending on group size etc.): €5 - €8 Please contact us for booking and further details education@nch.ie 7 education@nch.ie | www.nch.ie | 01 417 0000

St. Declan’s School St. Declan’s School is a school for children with behavioural and emotional difficulties. Our work here involves engaging the talents of sound artist and composer Slavek Kwi. Slavek visits the school on a weekly basis and works with children, some of whom have complex developmental difficulties including communication/speech and language difficulties, emotional/behavioural difficulties, ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome. “The children have mild emotional and/or behavioural difficulties and their weekly encounter with musical instruments in this free style environment gives them a chance to express themselves and communicate with each other outside of verbal language…Music gives them a different way of listening.” Slavek Kwi for The Irish Times Health Plus

Slavek’s particular expertise focuses on the development of children’s communication skills through the medium of music, enabling them to give a creative response through music/sound making. Please contact education@nch.ie for further details

Recognising the talent of our young music students and emerging professionals, the ECO programme provides a programme of activities and initiatives aimed at various levels and ages. We aim to support, develop and mentor high-level students and musicians, to foster the development of younger music students, and to encourage a pluralist and genre spanning approach. By linking our activities to the concert programming of the National Concert Hall, we also facilitate the interaction of great visiting and domestic artists with developing Irish Musicians.

International Education Series The International Education Series offers unprecedented access for Irish music students to some of the best musicians in the world by linking with the International Concert Series, the National Concert Hall’s flagship performance series. Selected master classes and other educational activities from each of the strands of the International Concert Series provide our students with the opportunity to work with the best orchestras, choirs, singers, pianists and other instrumentalists. West Cork Comes to Dublin: String Quartet and Cello Master Classes Ensemble playing is at the heart of musical activity, yet it can be an area in which young musicians find it hard to gain experience. In this collaborative event with the West Cork Comes to Dublin Chamber Music Festival, we aim to address this by providing an opportunity for student quartets to rehearse and perform under the guidance and tutelage of some of the best chamber musicians both from Ireland and internationally. On Sunday 29th March 2015, a selection of Ireland’s promising quartets and cellists will benefit from the teaching of Krzysztof Chorzelski and Natalie Clein respectively. Education, Community and Outreach Programme Of Events

Whether you are a long standing attendee of the National Concert Hall, or are less familiar with what we do, we believe that your life can be enriched by not just listening to music, but by active participation and learning. We aim to engage with our local and national community, and provide greater opportunity for all members of society to experience the benefits of musical engagement. We believe in lifelong learning, and our activities for older people are central to our programme, grounded in the belief that it is never too late (nor too early) to participate in, or learn about music.

ECO Ensembles

A frequent regret expressed by many adults is that of never having played music. It is our belief that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in a musical ensemble, and that everyone will benefit from doing so at some point of their lives. We also believe people should be encouraged to begin performing regardless of age, experience, training or musical background. The ECO ensemble programme provides a range of ensembles where the emphasis is on participation and enjoyment - discover your inner musician!

Insights Unlocking the mystery behind the music Insights is a series of talks given by respected figures in Irish music education and performance, and is loosely based on the International Concert Series. Each talk takes its theme from an upcoming concert, and as such will be of particular interest to those attending, but will also have much to offer anyone with an interest in expanding their understanding of classical music. Join us for evenings of musical enlightenment! Tuesday 20 January 6:45 – 7:45PM Carolan Room

Bach-Chorale to Barcarolle: Piano and Song David Mooney – Head of Department of Keyboard Studies, DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama In the first talk of the Insights series, David Mooney will focus on the relationship between piano and song. Using repertoire from the upcoming Benjamin Grosvenor recital, David will explore the theme in a general way, before focusing on specific works for illustration, such as Bach-Busoni (Chaconne), Franck (Chorale), Chopin (Barcarolle), and the song elements of Granados’ Goyescas. Full Price: €8 Friends of the National Concert Hall: €6

Tuesday 10 February 6:45 – 7:45PM Carolan Room

David and Goliath, the Ballet of Unequals: a Stradivari and Model D Steinway Recital Keith Pascoe – Violinist with the Vanbrugh Quartet In this talk, inspired by the Ray Chen (violin) and Julien Quentin (piano) recital, Keith Pascoe will ask the question: How has the violin and piano duet format survived? In the light of the modern concert grand piano’s increased power and ability to dominate a symphony orchestra, how and why has the violin, hardly altered since the eighteenth century, managed to hold its own? Keith will explore the roles of the two instruments, and how composers and performers have adjusted to the ‘Frankenstein’s monster’, which the piano has become. On Wings of Song: Music and the Lyric Poet Virginia Kerr – Celebrated Irish Soprano and faculty member of the Royal Irish Academy of Music and NUI Maynooth. Using as inspiration the upcoming performance by Natalie Dessay (soprano) and Philippe Cassard (piano), Virginia Kerr will explore the world of Art Song. Lyric poetry has inspired composers throughout the centuries. The Art Song strives to be the perfect combination of music and literature, based on four elements: the poet, the composer, the singer and the accompanist. The poet inspires the composer and the result is interpreted by the singer and the accompanist. It is one of the most communicative and important musical genres. Education, Community and Outreach Programme Of Events

We are proud of our activities in the healthcare sector and are constantly striving to increase our reach in this area. Our activities are geared towards enriching the lives of those suffering from long-term health conditions; contributing to learning, through music, of those with special needs; and enhancing physical and emotional wellbeing by providing the opportunity to participate in music-making. To date, our activities have brought musicians and music programmes into all parts of the country, and into a wide variety of settings. Whether working with sick children, people living with dementia or mental health concerns or those dealing with life-limiting injuries, we believe that engagement with music can have positive effects in ways that extend far beyond the performance.

Music in Children’s Hospitals - Kids’ Classics In developing this programme we have partnered with Kids’ Classics to bring music out from the National Concert Hall and into Ireland’s children’s hospitals. The programme offers distraction and relaxation for young patients undergoing stressful treatment, and helps to improve the quality of life for patients, families and staff. The programme aims to achieve a positive influence on patient mood and wellbeing, support of personal happiness and fulfilment while in care, and increased social interaction between patients, family members and staff while in the hospital or care setting. By providing regular workshops and ward visits, Kids’ Classics brings a musical component and live music experience into a healthcare setting, where it had previously not existed. Kids’ Classics is kindly supported by the Community Foundation for Ireland, Brackaville Investments, and Michael O’Brien.

The Gamelan – An Introduction Gamelan Facts • Gamelan originates from Bali and Java in Indonesia. • The word ‘gamel’ means hammer. • A gamelan orchestra consists mostly of gongs, metallophones (instruments with rows of tuned metal bars that are struck with mallets), xylophones and drums. • Gamelan music is used to accompany performances such as dance and shadow puppet plays. • Gamelan pieces are based on a primary melodic phrase. Each instrument plays a variation of this melody. • There are two main ‘scales’ used in gamelan music: • The Slendro tuning system divides the octave into five equidistant parts. • The Pelog tuning system divides the octave into seven unequal parts. • No two gamelan sets have exactly the same tuning, giving each one its own distinctive character. • Gamelan pieces are cyclical - with repetition and variation being characteristic features. Structure The music is made up of interlocking layers, each played by a different instrument. The layers are usually based on a melodic line called a balungan. The texture is heterophonic (made up of a main melody played at the same time as variants of it). Gamelan music is characterised by the following: • the lower the pitch, the longer the note values • the highest layers are for virtuoso solo instruments played very fast • the lowest gongs are often played by beginners • the music is divided into four beat groups called keteg • gongs of different sizes are used to mark cycles of music known as the gongan education@nch.ie | www.nch.ie | 01 417 0000
