T
he RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s new season promises to be an epic and exhilarating journey of adventure and discovery as it celebrates the art of storytelling through the world’s greatest music. The magical orchestral mystery tour begins with a very special Season Taster concert on Friday 6 September featuring some of the exciting and entertaining highlights to be encountered in the year ahead. The very good news is that all tickets for this special concert are priced at ¤10. In a one-off opportunity this season to encounter its swaggering sequined brilliance, Bizet’s thrilling Les Toréadors from his ever-popular opera Carmen (6 September) provides the perfect opener to a season full of familiar favourites and surprising new discoveries. Evidence of the contrasts of tone and temperament in the months ahead comes courtesy of the Sleeping Beauty Waltz by Tchaikovsky (24 January), whose compelling Fantasy Overture to Shakespeare’s Hamlet (13 February) reveals the great Russian romantic’s darker side. Darkness abounds in the stories of the Brothers Grimm, too, and the RTÉ NSO marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Jacob with a spooky surprise in a night of poetry and power featuring Schumann’s sublime Cello Concerto and Beethoven’s majestic Eroica Symphony (20 September), with his dramatic Seventh Symphony (31 January), muscular Emperor and powerful Fourth Piano Concertos also highlights of the season (11 April and 23 May). Saint-Saëns’ wickedly wonderful Danse Macabre ushers in two supernatural concerts combining the demonic and the Gothic with a free recital of organ music by Bovet and Franck, and an 8pm concert featuring brimstone and hellfire from Liszt and a blistering witches’ Sabbath in Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique (both 28 February). Proving the fantastical can also be fun, the Scherzo from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream flags up a very special concert celebrating the works of William Shakespeare in words and music, with some of Ireland’s finest actors joining the RTÉ NSO on the Abbey Theatre stage (15 December). Mendelssohn’s sense of drama is also to the fore in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, a journey from becalmed threat to buoyant safety (23 May).
Journeys on land are no less colourful, even against the snow-white background of Prokofiev’s mesmerising Troika ride from Lieutenant Kijé (4 April). Offering different sides of Prokofiev, we also have the grief-stricken Sixth Symphony (7 February) and exhilarating Classical Symphony (12 March, Limerick; 13 March, Waterford; 14 March, Dublin). And we celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth with the apocalyptic ‘Storm’ sea interlude from Peter Grimes and his shadow-lit Serenade for tenor, horn and strings alongside Leonard Bernstein’s joyous 24-hours in New York, On the Town (18 October), while the tormented and poignant Piano Concerto shares the stage with Mahler’s effervescent Fourth Symphony (4 October). Just as animated, albeit more combustibly, is Mussorgsky’s menacing and magical Night on a Bare Mountain (7 February) with soothing balm provided by the serenely beautiful Meditation from Massenet’s Thaïs in another season once-only opportunity to hear it in our opening concert (6 September). To Spain’s sunnier climes with the ‘Jota’ from Falla’s The Three-cornered Hat, a hint of what’s to come in a concert of fun, frolics and vivacious music including Dvorˇák’s feisty Carnival Overture and the hauntingly beautiful and hugely entertaining Second Piano Concerto by Brahms (8 November). And to end this 6th September Season Taster concert we travel from the old to the New World and Aaron Copland’s irresistibly romantic salute to the pioneering spirit of frontier America in Appalachian Spring (18 October), and back again to the elegance of 19th-century Vienna with Johann Strauss II’s irresistible Emperor Waltz, just one of the many polkas, marches and waltzes from the Strauss family and ravishing arias – with soprano Caro O’Sullivan – by Gounod, Offenbach and Lehár that will usher in the New Year in style (1 January, Dublin; 3 January, Cork). by Michael Quinn ‘The Story Begins’, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s 2013– 2014 Season Taster concert takes place on Friday 6 September at 8pm. All tickets ¤10. RTÉ NSO Main Season concert prices start at ¤10. Get the best value with a Season Package. Concert Packages (3 or more concerts) start from ¤28.50.

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHT
THE SÃO PAULO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA & MARIN ALSOP The new season’s International Concert Series welcomes a number of ‘first-time appearances’ at Earlsfort Terrace. Smaller ensembles include the Danish String Quartet, Amsterdam Sinfonietta and City of London Sinfonia while larger groups bring the Irish débuts of the Bournemouth Symphony next March and Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP) – the São Paulo Symphony on 26th October.

T
here is an interesting connection between Bournemouth and São Paulo as the latter’s music director Marin Alsop was the former’s principal for six years from 2002. Now its conductor emeritus, she has also made a number of commercial recordings with both orchestras. Founded in 1954, the São Paulo Symphony undertook triumphant European tours in 2010 and 2012. Described as the leading and largest orchestra in South America, with 115 rostered musicians, this year’s fifteen-venue circuit covers Austria, England, France, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland. During its season, OSESP (Orquestra Sinfonica do Estado de São Paulo) presents thirty-five weekly concerts, with each repeated two or three times, tours throughout Brazil and regularly plays elsewhere in South America. There are also recitals by OSESP’s chamber groups and, like the RTÉ NSO, the orchestra has related symphonic and children’s choirs. It commissions at least five works annually from native composers with Clarice Assad’s recently completed rhapsody Saravá, - commemorating the centenary of composer/poet Vinicius de Moraes – being featured at the National Concert Hall. A composer-in-residence programme has been in operation for some time with significant participation by England’s Thomas Adès, Argentina’s Osvaldo Golijov, Russia’s Sofia Gubaidulina and Finland’s Magnus Lindberg. There is an educational outreach programme and OSESP runs its own academy where up to twenty young artists receive on-going tuition from the orchestra’s principals and are given practical rank and file playing experience. Most of these developments stemmed from John Neschling, who became OSESP’s charismatic principal conductor in 1997 following the twenty-four year reign of Eleazar de Carvalho (1912-1996). During his tenure, Rio de Janeiro-born Viennese-trained Neschling negotiated improved musicians’ salaries and working conditions and raised the orchestra’s profile to international status. He was also one of those responsible for the conversion of the dilapidated Júlio Prestes railway terminal to the splendid fifteen-hundred-seat Sala São Paulo – OSESP’s base. However, not without some recriminations, his baton was handed on to Jan Pascal Tortelier in 2008. Now principal guest conductor in São Paulo,
Tortelier was the Ulster Orchestra’s music director from 1989 to 1992. Another Irish connection comes through former director of the National Chamber Choir, Celso Antunes, currently the orchestra’s associate conductor. New York-born Marin Alsop assumed the principal conductor’s mantle last year. Another magnetic musician she will direct the São Paulo Symphony here. A graduate of New York’s Julliard School, Marin Alsop, who also studied with Leonard Bernstein, was awarded the Koussevitzky Prize in Tanglewood in 1989. Engagements quickly followed with Maestra Alsop appointed principal conductor of the Colorado Symphony in 1993. Holding that position until 2005, she is presently Colorado’s conductor laureate. As well as retaining her aforementioned Bournemouth post, Marin Alsop became music director of the Baltimore Symphony in 2007 with her contract recently extended until 2015. Besides her innovative programming, Marin Alsop has spearheaded several outreach initiatives including OrchKids – a ‘music education and life improvement program’ for underprivileged youth across suburban Baltimore. A familiar figure on the podia of many of America’s leading orchestras, Marin Alsop has guest conducted with Bavarian Radio, Royal Concertgebouw, Czech Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Vienna Symphony and the London Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras. Marin Alsop passes another historic milestone on 7th September as the first woman to direct the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms. Awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for exceptional creative work, Marin Alsop became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008 and, hailed as ‘as a breath of fresh air in the music world’, was listed among the Top 100 Women by The Guardian in 2011. OSESP’s Dublin programme comprises Clarice Assad’s Saravá - Homage to Vinicius de Moraes; Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story and Mahler’s First Symphony. Written by Pat O’Kelly, music critic for the Irish Independent. São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop, perform on Saturday 26th October 2013 8pm as part of the National Concert Hall’s International Concert Series 2013/2014. Tickets from ¤30.

NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHT
THE LATEST ON LEMALU New Zealand’s great bass-baritone
J
onathan Fa’afetai Lemalu is a big guy. Not as big perhaps as a certain towering Welshman whose name jumps effortlessly to the top of the queue when the best bass-baritones in the world are being discussed. This is a popular pastime among opera lovers as deep-lying baritones seem to have grabbed the public favouritism that was once the exclusive preserve of high-flying tenors. Ireland is not exactly over-endowed with bass-baritones. There has, in truth, been a national drought for ages, and maybe that’s the reason we value them so much when they come our way. Bryn Terfel dropped in last June with ecstatic results at the National Concert Hall so the arrival here of Lemalu,
54
considered in his native country of New Zealand as the best Maori-born singer since Kiri Te Kanawa, will certainly be a highlight in the matinée section of the International Concert Series 2013/ 2014. Now 37 years old, Lemalu, the son of Samoan immigrants -- Fa’afetai, means ‘thank you’ -- must have caught the eye of All-Black scouts during his school days. Sturdy of build in true Samoan style, he exudes the solidity and confidence to prop up a scrum, but it was in the less heady (and sweaty) environment of church choirs that he learned the trade that has made him an international singing star today. “My parents were by no means wealthy and wanted the best for me, so my mother enrolled me for all the
NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie no booking fees
church choirs she could -- even if they were not of our religion,” he recalls. After winning all round him in New Zealand’s top competition (with help from Kiri’s own Hungarian-born music teacher Vera Rosza) he arrived in London in 2000 with his music sheets and scores, letters of introduction and, in his back-pocket a useful back-up -- a law degree from the University of Otago, where he had also studied music. Three years at the Royal College of Music, where he won the esteemed gold medal, saw him winning a rake of top accolades, including the Kathleen Ferrier Award. His reputation quickly took wing in the professional sphere, not least when his first album, a collection of lieder works, won the prestigious Gramophone Award for best debut album in 2002. “A major new talent destined for greatness. Every so often a musician arrives on the scene with a talent so richly endowed that the musical world sits up and takes note,’’ boomed Gramophone itself, Newspaper scribes went into maudlin mode describing the young man as “the Next Big Thing’’ and (definitely worthy of Masterchef) “a voice that is “sumptuously honeyed’’ and “richly creamy, like slow melted chocolate’’. Fame was flashing its besotting charms in his direction and not for a career in pastry-making. It came very soon via the BBC Proms, a programme that can convert classical talent into household names overnight. Such was the case with Lemalu whose vocal quality and personal warmth resonated of his South Seas ancestry. More than one newspaper declared him “King of the Proms’’ and he has appeared consistently on the popular television show over the last decade. Like all leading singers, he works extremely hard, and admits he is fiercely competitive -- particularly with himself. Being a stickler for detail in all aspects of his performance, led him in recent times to learn Chinese so as to perform in that vast land.
Since his early beginnings in London, Lemalu has performed in many of the great opera houses of Europe, the US and Australia. While his repertoire so far skirts around Wagner, he has conquered every other area including Verdi, Britten and Mozart, and is happy to point out that his voice is still darkening and deepening -- a nod towards Wotan, perhaps. A major triumph for Lemalu was the part of Queequeg, the Polynesian harpooner, in Dallas Opera’s production of Jake Heggie’s Moby Dick in 2010. This was a role for which his ethnicity fitted perfectly and he was immensely proud of his portrayal. The catalogue of conductors with whom he has worked reads like a who’s who of the best and includes such as Valery Gergiev, Zubin Mehta, Antonio Pappano, Simon Rattle and Colin Davis. Lemalu is based in central London with his wife, Croatian mezzo-soprano Sandra Martinovic (who is also an opera director) and their son Joshua. The bass-baritone estimates that he spends two thirds of his time travelling the world and has spoken in philosophical terms about what that means. “Opera singing is an inherently nomadic life. If you want to be at the top of this business or want a good living, you have to be prepared to travel and that means knowing how to continue or create a life for yourself wherever you are.’’ “We need to know where the supermarkets, banks, trains and tubes are, and now we need to know where playgrounds and children’s cinemas and things are. I guess we’ve just got really good at creating our lives at wherever our suitcases land.” By Dick O’Riordan, classical music columnist with The Sunday Business Post

W
hen I was about seven years old, I went to London to see the musical Annie. My parents brought the five Gormley kids for a weekend away with this new musical being the central attraction. My Dad, who was an avid musical theatre director, had seen it on one of his trips to the West End. He returned home full of enthusiasm and decided that the rest of the family just had to see it! We were beside ourselves with excitement as we arrived at ‘The Victoria Palace’. We had our tickets and were shown to our seats, only to find that there were seven other people sitting in them! The usher checked our tickets. A double booking seemed to have occurred. We stood in the aisle as the curtain rose. I was mesmerised as I looked at this little redhead on stage singing Maybe. Then came the line of orphans dressed in grey with their scrubbing brushes and buckets singing Hard-Knock Life. I was hooked. At such a young age, I was unaware of the hassle regarding our seats and was glued to the stage. Thankfully, the performance wasn’t sold out and we were soon seated in the dress circle. The production was fantastic and I left with a big badge saying “I saw Annie” on my coat lapel. My parents left with a full refund of our tickets from the theatre manager with sincere apologies for the mistake regarding our seats. This London production followed the original Broadway show that opened in 1977. It ran in New York for nearly six years. It was based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie, with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin. So many little girls have dreamed of playing the role of Annie. Andrea McArdle was the choice for that original Broadway production and this role was later taken up by none other than Sarah Jessica Parker. Dublin-born Jacinta Whyte started her career taking over the role of Annie in the original London production and went on to play Annie in the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. The role of the baddie, Miss Hannigan has attracted a series of great actors. The
West End 1998 revival starred Lily Savage (the female alter ego of comedian Paul O’Grady). A 35th anniversary production opened on Broadway last year with the inspired casting of Jane Lynch (of the TV series Glee). Carol Burnett played the role in the 1982 film and we are getting another film version next year with, wait for it..Cameron Diaz playing Miss Hannigan! One might not immediately think of Annie as a “Christmas musical” but in fact it is the perfect choice for The National Concert Hall in December. All of the best musicals that we like to see around Christmas need to have certain ingredients. A heart-warming story is a must. It needs to have elements of sadness but with the promise of a happy ending. The cast needs to include children as well as a memorable baddie! Then we need somebody to save the day and songs that audience members will be humming as they leave the theatre. Think Oliver, The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz. Annie fits in with them perfectly. It is remembered musically for several songs but Tomorrow really hits home. It provides that optimistic feeling that, let’s face it, we all need…. that everything will be alright. The sun’ll come out Tomorrow So ya gotta hang on ‘Til tomorrow Come what may Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love ya Tomorrow! You’re always A day A way! Aedín Gormley presents Movies and Musicals (Saturday 1-4pm) and Sunday Matinée (Sunday 1-4pm) on RTÉ lyric fm
