ome musicians like to claim that their instrument chose them. Not Xavier de Maistre, who, at the tender age of nine decided he wanted to be a musician but was adamant that ‘I didn’t want to play an instrument that everybody else was playing’. The harp perfectly fitted the bill. Happily, his choice has proved to be as prodigious as it was precocious. On the eve of his 30th birthday next year, the young French virtuoso has acquired a formidable reputation as a harpist of unimpeachable technique and rare emotional insight with an almost evangelical passion for what is surely one of the most challenging of all instruments. ‘I want to make it a more normal and common concert instrument. But with 47 strings and seven pedals, it’s a very complex and demanding instrument, and much richer than the common perception of it as ethereal and angelic. And more rewarding, too, with a very broad range of colours and temperament.’ His début appearance with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra on Friday 26 October promises to be a revelatory experience when he performs the Tango-infused Harp Concerto by the Argentinean composer Alberto Ginastera. Completed in 1964 after an eight-year-long gestation period – and approvingly described by the composer as ‘the most difficult work I have ever written’, de Maistre regards it as offering ‘a new musical language for the harp: very rhythmic, not so many glissandi, and a very spectacular experience for the audience’. Immediately surprising about the Concerto is its blending of traditional Argentinean folk idioms inspired by the iconic figure of the gaucho horseman with distinctly modern, 20th-century accents. The result is something altogether unique from a composer, the 30th anniversary of whose death at the age of 67 will fall in 2013, widely considered to be one of Latin America’s greatest and certainly one of its most successful musical exports. ‘Ginastera explores a range of techniques to find new ways to express and exploit what the harp can do. It’s a very distinctive, beautiful and exciting piece for both
the harp and the orchestra, which boasts 28 different percussion instruments, a big brass sound and rich use of horns.’ All of which calls into question the conventional image of the harp as a delicate and fragile instrument with a small sound. ‘It can be delicate, but it’s also surprisingly robust. It’s not a concert piano, of course, but the sound of a harp is just as varied and can easily fill a concert hall. It has a very direct and focused tone and Ginastera really draws out the full range of what it can do in music that is challenging to play and at the same time very beautiful and dramatic and emotional to listen to.’ With echoes of Stravinsky in its strong rhythms and of the ‘night music’ of Bartók in its evocation of mood, its harmonies and orchestration, the Harp Concerto proves a remarkably accessible piece. ‘Every time I’ve played it before, audiences have been surprised, impressed and above all, entertained by it. It’s a rare opportunity to discover the harp as a more flexible and powerful instrument than you might think it is, and to discover a composer of great and very approachable gifts. It is music you can begin to understand and appreciate even when hearing it for the first time.’ There’s a certain courage, too, in de Maistre’s first appearance as a concerto soloist in Ireland, where, he says, ‘there are harps everywhere but none, I think, that will ever have sounded quite the same as Ginastera allows it to be. I’m sure it’s going to be a very exciting experience for everyone in the hall!’

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHT
CELEBRATING WILLIAM VINCENT WALLACE (1812-1865)
T
ime was when William Vincent Wallace was a household name and his music graced many an operatic stage and concert venue and was played and sung in many a homely parlour. However, time and fashion change and what is enjoyed by one generation is relegated to obscurity by the next. As this year celebrates the bicentenary of Wallace’s birth maybe the time is ripe to rekindle his memory and resurrect some of his forgotten treasures. To this end, pianist and musicologist Una Hunt has been conducting considerable research into the composer and will be presenting a commemorative event in the Hall on 15 October. Wallace was born in Waterford City on 11 March 1812 to a protestant father William Spencer, who was a sergeant bandmaster in the Royal 29th Regiment, and a catholic mother Elizabeth McKenna, who came from Limerick. The following year the family were posted to Ballina where the Wallaces had three other children Wellington, Eliza and Susanna. The lads became boy soldiers with William showing unusual talent as a pianist as well as on several other instruments. He was permitted to play with the regimental band and, on occasions, he led it. The regiment returned to Waterford in 1825 but on learning of its planned 24
posting to Mauritius, William Spencer bought himself and his sons out of the army and moved to Dublin where William joined the Theatre Royal Orchestra and took organ lessons from Haydn Corri (1785-1860) at the Pro-Cathedral. When a mere eighteen-year-old, handsome and well mannered, William was appointed organist at Thurles Cathedral and accepted a teaching post at the Ursuline Convent in the town where one of the novices, Isabella Kelly of Frascati House in Dublin’s Blackrock, fell in love with him. This was much to the consternation of Isabella’s father and her sibling – Sister Vincent – who was a professed nun in Thurles. William saw a way out through becoming a catholic and adding Vincent to his name. Thereafter he was known as William Vincent Wallace. After their marriage, the young couple returned to Dublin living for a while in South William Street where their son Willy was born. Wallace rejoined the Theatre Royal orchestra as violinist and conductor and also led the Anacreontic Society with which body he made his debut as composer - his violin and piano concertos being particularly well received. Hearing Paganini play at the Theatre Royal in 1831, Wallace became obsessed with the violin so much so that fears
NATIONAL CONCERT HALL BOX OFFICE TEL: 01 417 0000 • www.nch.ie no booking fees
arose for his health and sanity. Isabella took matters in hand, deciding to emigrate to Australia. Sailing to Liverpool, the family left the English port on 9 July 1835 and William Vincent Wallace’s extraordinary odyssey began. Initially calling to Tasmania, where Wallace gave a number of recitals, the family settled in Sydney and within a month Wallace gave his first acclaimed concert under the patronage of the Limerick-born governor general Sir Richard Bourke. Hailed as the ‘Australian Paganini’ for his violin virtuosity, he was also likened to Liszt through his remarkable pianism. Wallace was soon an established figure in society. When a recession hit the Australian economy and the Wallace finances, the family returned to Ireland in 1838 although Wallace, leaving considerable debts behind him, took a ship for New Zealand where he went through a form of Maori marriage and had a cross engraved on his chest by his ‘bride’ to prove it. He is alleged to have been court pianist to the Begum of Oudh in Uttar Pradesh and to have hunted elephant with the King of the Belgians before arriving in South America and riding a mule across the Andes. It must be remembered Wallace revelled in story telling!! However he was in Chile in 1837 and was director of the Italian Theatre in Mexico City in 1841, the year he also conducted at the French Theater in New Orleans. The following year found him in Philadelphia and Boston before making his New York debut at the Apollo Saloon on 6 June 1843. Coming back to Europe in 1844, Wallace’s English debut was at the Hanover Square Concert Rooms where he was introduced to the dramatist Edward Fitzball (1792-1873). The meeting proved fruitful as Fitzball later provided the libretto for Wallace’s first, and most successful, opera Maritana. Premiered at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 15 November 1845, it was conducted by Julius Benedict (1804-1885) composer of the equally popular The Lily of Killarney. Further productions followed quickly including Dublin in 1846 and Vienna, New York and Philadelphia in 1848. A favourite at court, Queen Victoria had a special medallion minted in Wallace’s honour. Only five were
struck - showing a side view cameo of Wallace’s head – with one each going to the Russian Czar, the Austrian Emperor, the King of Prussia and the composer. Victoria kept the fifth herself. Wallace came back to Dublin in 1846, hoping for reconciliation with Isabella but news of his philandering exploits preceded him and she refused to meet him. Somewhat dejected, Wallace ventured to Paris where, meeting Berlioz and Rossini, he accepted a commission from the Opéra. This was not fulfilled and the planned work – Lurline - waited until 1860 for its Covent Garden production. In the meantime Wallace had returned to the New York where he fell in love with, and it appears married, the German-born singer Helene Stöpel. She bore him two sons – Clarence and Vincent – before the family settled in London in 1853. Wallace’s opera The Amber Witch followed in 1861 with Love’s Triumph in 1862 and The Desert Flower in 1864. None achieved the popularity of either Maritana or Lurline. Wallace’s health and eyesight deteriorated in 1865 and the family travelled to France, staying initially in Passy outside Paris and then continuing to the Pyrenees and the Château de Bagen, owned by Helene’s sister and her husband. William Vincent Wallace died there on 12 October 1865. He is buried in London’s Kensal Green Cemetery. Commenting on Lurline, George Bernard Shaw felt ‘there are several moments in the opera in which the string of hackneyed and trivial shop ballad rise into melody that surges with genuine emotion’. Among Wallace’s instrumental music his pièce de résistance may well be the Introduction and Variations Cracovienne. Some of his piano works display enormous Lisztean difficulties while others are reminiscent of Chopin. – Pat O’Kelly Pat O’Kelly is classical music reviewer with the Irish Independent. NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHT
AND ALL THAT JAZZ...
N
oel Kelehan was an all-round musician. As pianist, conductor, composer and arranger, he played music of many genres, but his greatest love was jazz. On Sunday 25 November, the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, plus guests, will play a concert in tribute to this great Irish jazz pianist, who died on 6 February 2012. Born in Dublin on 26 December 1935, Noel studied classical piano, theory and harmony, but was self-taught as a composer and arranger. His main jazz influences were George Shearing, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Miles Davis. After leaving school, he worked for a while in a clothing company before becoming a professional pianist, playing for dances in tennis clubs and the Metropole Ballroom. In 1963 he went to New York for a year. Although he enjoyed playing there, he was glad to return home to Dublin. He never lived outside Ireland again. He became a familiar part of the Dublin jazz scene, playing with Louis

Stewart, Jimmy McKay, Mike Nolan, Keith Donald and John Wadham, and writing charts for big bands. But a musician in Ireland cannot earn a living from jazz alone, especially with a family to support. Noel took on a staff job as Musical Director in RTÉ, writing arrangements for the Light Orchestra, later the Concert Orchestra. From 1966 to 1998 he conducted most of the Irish entries to the Eurovision Song Contest, including five of the winning songs. This work made his name known to a wider audience. No matter how busy he was, Noel always found time for jazz. In the late 1970s he led the Noel Kelehan Quintet, with Keith Donald (soprano and tenor sax), Mike Nolan (trumpet and flugelhorn), Frank Hess (bass) and John Wadham (drums). The group played music by Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis. They had a Sunday night residency in a Dublin hotel, and recorded an LP, Ozone. As time went by and visits from international jazz musicians became more frequent, Noel played piano for

A TRIBUTE TO MASTER OF JAZZ, NOEL KELEHAN big names like Zoot Sims, Kenny Wheeler, Art Farmer and Johnny Griffin. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he appeared at several Dublin Jazz Society concerts, accompanying American greats like Scott Hamilton, Joel Helleny, Randy Sandke, Harry Allen and Spike Robinson. Honor Heffernan, who frequently sang with Noel, and who recorded Chasing The Moon with him in 1991, spoke on RTÉ Radio 1 soon after his death. Remembering how he helped to nurture talent, she described him as ‘supportive, wonderful, funny, kind, caring’. Honor led a tribute concert to Noel Kelehan in Bewley’s on 25 February. Ronan Guilfoyle, who first played bass with Noel in the late 70s, echoes Honor’s praise. In his ‘Mostly Music’ blog, he writes: ‘He was always positive and supportive to me despite being light years ahead of me in knowledge and experience. This musical and personal generosity was something he was renowned for.’
Ronan has composed a specially commissioned piece for the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, to be performed at the tribute concert. Formerly known as Dublin City Big Band, the DCJO was founded by Ciaran Wilde and Ray Martin in 2007 to encourage students at the Ballymun Wind Project. The band went on to play in the Button Factory, Temple Bar, as well as touring the country and playing a concert at the National Concert Hall in March 2011. Also appearing at the Noel Kelehan tribute concert are Laura MacDonald (alto sax), Ellister van der Molen (trumpet), Mike Nielsen (guitar), Phil Ware (piano), Cormac O’Brien (double bass) and Shane O’Donovan (drums). Whitlock
Sonata in C minor 1. Grave - Animato 2. Canzona 3. Scherzetto 4. Choral
Linked to RTÉ NSO Main Season programme This complex and monumental work is linked with Rachmaninov’s second symphony (heard in the 8pm concert), first heard by Whitlock in 1934 and referred to cryptically in the Sonata’s dedication. Whitlock’s unashamedly lush romantic style owes much to the older composer, and marks him out as an important if somewhat neglected figure in the twentieth century canon of organ music.

Frank Corcoran’s ‘lyrical, leppin’’ and song-like Violin Concerto combines, the composer says, ‘fiddling fun, violinistic seriousness and art’s sorrow, and fast, furious, last orchestral thoughts’. Estonian Arvo Pärt’s bewitching, prayer-like elegy for Britten is a haunting recognition of a lost kindred spirit, and Rachmaninov’s swooningly beautiful Second Symphony could have no better champion than the dynamic conductor Christopher Warren-Green.

Mavis Staples
SATURDAY 3 NOVEMBER 8PM Mavis Staples, lead vocals Yvonne Staples, Vicki Randle & Donny Gerrard backing vocals • Rick Holmstrom guitar • Jeff Turmes bass, guitar Stephen Hodges drums Mavis Staples doesn’t so much sing a song as baptize it in truth.’ Boston Globe Mavis Staples’ career is one of the most remarkable in all of music, not only for its spirit and longevity, but also for the period of history that it spans. The gospel music of The Staples Singers in the 1950s blossomed into the 1960s popular mainstream on the strength of Mavis Staples’ voice, and she was at the epicentre of the civil rights movement, when she sang for both Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy. Her later career includes both powerful solo recordings and collaborations with such major artists as Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder and Prince (who called her ‘the epitome of soul’).
