SPRING/SUMMER 2019 • VOLUME 4 • ISSUE 2
WELCOME! Dear Museum Members, Spring is always a great time to visit the National Cowboy Museum, and this year’s spring promises to be one of the most exciting ever! From A-list movie stars and NBA mascots (including the Oklahoma City Thunder’s beloved Rumble) to world-class events and fantastic exhibits (such as Layered Stories: America’s Canyonlands, opening in June), the Museum is the place to be in spring 2019. The arrival of April signals the first of the National Cowboy Museum’s major annual events: the Western Heritage Awards, April 12 – 13, 2019. Now in its 59th year, this prestigious awards ceremony was established not only to honor and elevate works in film, literature and music that celebrate the American West, but also to recognize the individuals who create them. This year, Hollywood icon Kevin Costner will accept induction into the Museum’s Hall of Great Western Performers. For more information visit nationalcowboymuseum.org/westernheritage. May marks the arrival of another popular and longstanding event at The Cowboy: The Annual Chuck Wagon Festival, May 25 – 26, 2019. This two-day, fun-filled family weekend is full of food samples, artist demonstrations, a petting zoo, live music, face painting, leather stamping, photos with a Longhorn and the list goes on. For more information, visit nationalcowboymuseum.org/chuckwagon. That brings us to June and to the most prestigious Western art exhibition and sale in the world: Prix de West. 2019 marks the 47th year of the Museum’s largest invitational art exhibition, in which nearly 300 paintings and sculptures by the world’s finest contemporary Western artists are displayed and sold. Prix de West Opening Weekend, June 7 – 8, 2019, features two days of related programming including artist seminars, a cocktail reception, live art auction, awards dinner and fixed-price sale of art. To learn more about the 2019 Prix de West, visit nationalcowboymuseum.org/prixdewest. This is just a sampling of Museum events coming this spring. The following pages are filled with worthwhile experiences happening every day. Finding Your West has never been more exciting. Come join us today! Sincerely, Natalie Shirley President & CEO

Kevin Costner Among 2019 Western Heritage Award Honorees
“
Oscar-winning actor and director Kevin Costner set to appear at the 2019 Western Heritage Awards For 59 years the Western Heritage Awards have been the gold standard in honoring the best in Western film, literature and music. It should come as no surprise, then, that some of the biggest names in entertainment have accepted their own Wrangler, the sculpture given to those honored with a Western Heritage Award. Last year’s ceremony saw celebrities including Sam Elliott, Katharine Ross and Barry Corbin gracing the stage of the National Cowboy Museum’s Sam Noble Special Events Center. And, considering that Oscar-winning actor and director Kevin Costner will appear at the 2019 Western Heritage Awards, April 12 – 13, for induction into the Hall of Great Western Performers, this year promises plenty of star power, too. Although Kevin Costner’s first big break in film — Lawrence Kasdan’s The Big Chill (1983) — largely ended up on the cutting room floor, Kasdan set the actor on the road to stardom with his next project, the Western Silverado (1985). Playing the irreverent Jake, Costner’s playful interpretation and his “fancy two-gun rig,” Paint Horse and now-classic line, “All I did was kiss a girl,” stole the film. Following the epic baseball movies Bull Durham (1988) and Field of Dreams (1989), Costner was back in the Western saddle (albeit a McClellan military saddle) in 1991, directing and starring in the Academy Award-winning Dances with Wolves. Three years later he starred as the lead character in another Kasdan Western, Wyatt Earp (1994). Costner took the director’s reins again in the much-lauded Western Open Range (2003), playing a former Civil War guerilla/shootist turned cowboy haunted by his past. Costner has also portrayed potent Western characters on the small screen, including “Devil” Anse Hatfield on the History Channel’s mini-series The Hatfields and McCoys: An American Vendetta opposite Bill Paxton, for which he received Emmy and Golden Globe honors. Today, Costner continues riveting audiences with his Western persona in the television drama series Yellowstone as rancher John Dutton. Slated for a second season in 2019, Yellowstone will also be honored during the Western Heritage Awards as the Fictional Drama category winner. Soon, Costner will also be seen on Netflix in the true-crime drama The Highwaymen opposite Woody Harrelson. For more information on the 2019 Western Heritage Awards, see p. 6. CONTINUING Ancient. Massive. Wild. – The Bison Exhibit Through May 12
Ancient. Massive. Wild. - The Bison Exhibit
Few animals conjure the power and symbolic presence of the North American bison. This exhibition explores the significance of this iconic creature, charting the dramatic changes that occurred to the bison and its habitat and to the people who depended upon it for their daily existence. It also illuminates the bison as a species and a symbol in the 20th century. American Indian Artists: 20th Century Masters Through May 12 Explore the Kiowa Six, Tonita Peña and Harrison Begay and the institutions that influenced them — particularly the University of Oklahoma and the Santa Fe Indian School. See how their art, and that of many others, reflected individual creativity and stylistic diversity. Cowboys in Khaki: Westerners in the Great War Through May 12
American Indian Artists: 20th Century Masters Waiting For The Bus. T.C. Cannon (Kiowa/ Caddo/Choctaw), 1977, lithograph. The Arthur and Shifra Silberman Collection, NCWHM. 1996.27.0332.
Drawing on the National Cowboy Museum’s militaria, rodeo and history collections — as well as loans from the 45th Infantry Division Museum and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum — this exhibition tells how those from the Western United States made decisive contributions to the war effort during WWI. Find Your West Through May 12 The American West is difficult to define and far more complex than stereotypes suggest. Featuring photographs representing the West’s diversity — images of husbands and fathers, mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters, family and friends, past and present — this exhibition shows the real people one reads about when reading about the West. Horseplay Through July 14
Find Your West, H.154.23, Dickinson Research Center, James A. Carson Collection, NCWHM
Watch horses take shape across mediums and styles. From abstract to realistic, pencil to pastel, small-scale to large, these preparatory works by artist Tom Lovell reveal how he developed ideas and practiced movement, anatomy, proportion and personality. 5

“
Construction is underway at the National Cowboy Museum on one of the most ambitious outdoor educational experiences ever undertaken. Liichokoshkomo’! — Chickasaw for “Let’s Play!” — is slated to open in spring 2020.
The educational experience we are building today will teach generations of children from throughout the world the important lessons inherent in the Western way of life.” - Diana Fields, Director of Annie Oakley Society
Liichokoshkomo’!’s creation has been a principal goal of the National Cowboy Museum’s Annie Oakley Society (AOS) since its inception. this fun and interactive, multi-cultural outdoor educational experience that combines thematic STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education with citizenship meant to strengthen the foundation of future generations, will be open to the public. For additional information regarding the AOS or to become a member, please visit the link above or contact Diana Fields at (405) 478-2250 ext. 233.
