With tractors becoming even more powerful and faster on the roads and the current tractor/ trailer gross weight limit of 24t due to increase to nearer 30 in years to come, there has been much talk of how to increase the braking performance of trailers. The fact remains that prevention is better than cure and that is why over the past 5 years Bailey have led the market in putting brake safety first. All Bailey grain and root trailers over 12t are fitted with commercial axles which provide the 45% braking efficiency proposed by the EU while any smaller models can be fitted with the same as an optional extra. “With faster tractors and more road haulage, demand for the high performance axles has steadily increased to a point where it is viable for us to fit them as standard on our top selling trailers” explains Michael Bailey. EU Proposals state that only trailers with the 50% braking efficiency should be allowed on the road but some farmers have been reluctant to spend around £1000 to upgrade from their agricultural axles which provide 25% efficiency. Bailey are increasing being asked to match tractor performance with air brakes. These also can be added to the commercial axles at a later date as a ʻbolt onʼ addition without compromising axle performance.

BAILEY TRAILERS COMPANY PROFILE
Baileyʼs flagship TB trailer range is available in capacities up to 24 tons… Tag range to 16 tons… Root Specials to 20 …and ʻBeeteapersʼ up to 22 tons. These are now all fitted with chromed rams as standard, plus heavy duty RHS chassis, tandem springs and LED lights. The ʻBeateaperʼ is fitted with flotation tyres for reduced ground compaction and mud guards for minimal mud transfer to the roads. Tipping to 60 degrees, ʻBeeteaperʼ is fitted with a hydraulic rear door on extended side arms so beet can be heaped to around 3 metres, 9 feet high. Like most Bailey designs the ʻBeeteaperʼ is multi-functional being equally useful with grain and other crops requiring tipping within buildings.
The Root Special Series

The Root Special features a longer and lower design to minimise damage to their valuable contents. They are equally at home in the grain harvest. Silage kits quickly convert the standard monocoque model into an efficient silage trailer. These are offered in a choice of designs: square back, flat back or mechanical. Large rear openings ensure fast and efficient discharge of the silage of forage crop. Commercial axles ensure safe transport on the roads. Among Baileyʼs optional fittings, the roll over ʻEasy sheetʼ offers crop protection from the damaging effects of wind, rain and vermin. They are designed to permit full door opening without unrolling the sheet. The popular bale and pallet trailer has been adapted to suit the needs of the potato grower with the addition of hydraulic rams to secure the boxes, a roll over sheet and hydraulic working platforms both sides for safe working on the field.

A family business It was 30 years ago when Tom Bailey and his step brother David Hoyes produced their first trailers in the Lincolnshire village of Aunsby. Their steel framed building business was facing a downturn following the governmentʼs reduction of building grants. Tom had previously worked for a trailer manufacturer and when the opportunity came for him to subcontract initially trailer chassis and later bodies, it was obvious that both the skills and the knowledge needed to produce complete trailers was available locally and their first Bailey trailer was a 10 ton tipper for a local farmer. Word spread and expansion followed.

Soon they needed a salesman and Graham Wright started his 30 years as the companyʼs sales manager. 26 trailers were manufactured in that first year, coincidentally the same number as Bailey are currently producing each week! The early grey finished trailers soon gave way to the Bailey green we know today, a colour selected on the simple expedient that no one else was producing green trailers at the time! 99% of Bailey trailers still get finished in green although alternative colours are available at a modest charge. The main exception is the yellow finish commonly applied to their contract tippers and dumpers to match JCB tractors.

Within 3 years Bailey switch their focus to concentrate solely on trailers which had by then eclipsed their building fabrication business. Twenty or so years later the original site had been fully developed but still could only produce around 12 trailers a week and accommodate 40 staff. Continued expansion demanded that the company moved on and a suitable site was identified at nearby Sleaford. And todayʼs purpose built factory with efficient work flows and computer controls was completed in early 2010. “We were never concerned about the investment required to make the move as we could see the demand for our trailers remaining very high” says Sales Director Michael Bailey.”We have an excellent dealer network and had been losing orders due to extended lead times. We currently have plans for further expansion within the year so capacity keeps pace with demand.” The company currently employs 9 members of the Bailey family. Richard Bailey heads the design department and oversees production including a state of the art laser cutter installed to handle sheet steel and runs 24 hours a day, five and a half days a week. He is also responsible for scheduling production so that delivery dates are met. “When we receive an order the delivery date agreed with the customer will be the date the trailer is delivered” explains Richard. “The computerised system gives us up to 12 months planning capability. This is increasingly important because dealers are forward ordering more than before. For example if you ordered a trailer in October, the factory has capacity. However, we may already fully booked for next June! So if you want a trailer for June/ July we would need to schedule for April /May. The new system is critical for our future expansion.”

As Michael Bailey says “Dealers like the build quality as well as the backup we provide. We believe we manufacture a top quality product and with the level of growth plus repeat business, we must be doing something right!” Dealers regularly take in 20 year old Bailey trailers in part exchange for new ones.
