DAYS 1–3 I ARUSHA, TANZANIA/LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to our lodge. The next day, drive to Lake Manyara National Park and keep an eye out for hippos, giraffes, flamingos, and lions on an afternoon safari. Then enjoy a morning wildlife drive before a hike to a coffee plantation. Rivertrees Country Inn; Plantation Lodge Meals: 2B, 2L, 2D DAYS 4–5 I NGORONGORO CRATER Travel to the Ngorongoro Highlands and meet with the village elders of a Maasai community off the tourist circuit. Then descend to the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, home to more than 25,000 animals. Observe elephants, cheetahs, zebras, and more on an afternoon safari, and return to the crater floor for breakfast and a safari the next day. DAYS 6–9 I OLDUVAI GORGE/SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK/ARUSHA Take a private tour of Olduvai Gorge and join Louise Leakey or Dr. Masao to discuss the Leakey family’s legacy and ongoing fossil finds here. Journey to the southern Serengeti. Set out on morning and afternoon safaris; opt for a hot-air balloon ride; and meet with a conservationist from a National Geographic–funded initiative to prevent human-lion conflict. Tanzanian conservationist Hans Cosmas Ngoteya co-founded the Landscape and Conservation Mentors Organization, which improves livelihoods through sustainable practices.
