Hottest Hair Care Ladies, its that time of year again; time for the fall fashion preview of the beauty trends that rocked the runways at Fashion Week! The runways were filled with interesting, beautiful, and contrasting beauty trends this year.

The Wet Look Wait, so now running out the door in a rush with soaking wet hair is trendy? It is according to the runways of designers such as Roberto Cavlli, where the look was paired with smudgy smoked-out eyes, and clean skin. According to Redken creative consultant Guido, the models’ hair was treated with hair oil, creating an overall vibe that was “sexy, and non-chalant.” If the straight-out-of-the-shower look is not for you, then seek inspiration from the runways of Oscar de La Renta, where the look was styled into side-swept Veronica Lake- style waves, a wined stained pout and smoky eyes. So next time you are running so late for work that you just don’t have time to do your hair, just leave it soaking wet, and ignore the stares from strangers on the train, you’re right on trend! Hardwear 16 super strong gel redken.com

Wind-Blown Va Va Va Volume Models were seen stomping down the runways of Bottega Veneta, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Lela Rose with hair so voluminous that even Snooki’s signature poof would be jealous. The look was completed clean, matte skin, and ruby stained lips, giving it a 1940’s feel. Wax Blast 10 - High Impact Finishing Spray Wax redken.com 24 Nationalistmag.com

Fine-mist aerosol spray illuminates hair with brilliant sheen and a silky feel. Weightless formula gives a light, clean application to all hair types.

Undone, Cool-Girl Hair You know that girl in school who always seemed to have the most gorgeously undone, wash-and-go kind of hair that made us girls who spent hours painstakingly blowdrying and flat-ironing our hair, all jealous? Well, she is back, in a sense. The carefree, cool-girl hair was seen on the runways Altuzarra, Helmut Lang, Isabel Marant, and Vera Wang. The look was paired with clean skin, and minimal makeup, just a little highlighter on the eyes, and maybe a pop of color on the lips. The result: an effortless cool and a slight tinge of jealousy for legions of us who, if we left our hair undone, would look probably look more like Phil Spector than a “cool-girl.” Sigh. stares from strangers on the train, you’re right on trend!

Braids-head Revisited As-if braids had ever really gone anywhere; they have made quite a comeback on the fall fashion runways. Whether you care for more of a side-braid style, as seen at Valentino, or you feel like you want to keep the memories of summertime alive and go for a Coachella inspired look, with loose flowing waves and a two princess braids fashioned into a rosette, there is a style for everyone! My personal favorite was the reverse French braid at Badgley Mishka where the braid started at the nape of the neck and led up to a loose pin-up style crown of hair atop the head. redken.com

Nationalistmag.com

25

Sleek and Futuristic The future is now; at least it is on the runways of Alexander Wang, Giambattista Valli, and Kenneth Cole. The hair was slicked back, and away from the face, creating an androgynous yet still feminine look that was a little “business up front, party in the back. The look was completed with minimal makeup, clean skin, and a whole lot of attitude! Glass 01 smoothing serum redken.com

Punk Riot It looks like the punk trend is here to stay for the fall. There was tons of graphic winged liner, dark, stained lips, and wacky hair to make even the most hard-core punk fan happy. Fendi put punk of full display where models were seen with long inside out braids, and mohawks made out of feathers! At Thakoon, models wore halfcuts of bangs, and at Alexander Wang, models had unique cognac-colored ponytails. The looks were paired with clean skin, soft smoky eyes, and either clean lips, or dark stained lips. So embrace your inner Ramone and rock the punk trend! So there you have it, a glimpse into the future of trends for fall! Whether you braid it, go punk, let it loose, or leave it undone, just remember to have fun with it! How Your Feet Can Beat The Heat Now that your boots and tennis shoes are locked away, and you have been living in your favorite summer sandals. Here are a few tips to have your feet looking and feeling good for the rest of summer. The first step to successfully acquiring healthy feet is to keep them exfoliated and moisturized. Having dry, rough, cracked heels can be a result of various situations. Using an exfoliating product like Antho Body & Foot Scrub will be removing all the dead skin cells that build up on your feet. Just add a teaspoon of the scrub to your washcloth or a foot spa and soak your feet for 30 minutes and gently scrub your feet. Moisturizing your feet will also help to prevent any type of skin damage the sun may cause. Caren Original foot treatment will help keep your feet sleek and smooth after your exfoliation. Just apply the cream to your feet every morning and night and your feet will be shiny and soft in no time The next tip for getting your feet prepared for the summer heat is to learn how to prevent blisters. Being in the sun for long hours at a time can cause one’s feet to become sweaty and swell up. The friction of your feet rubbing against the sandals is what creates these unwanted blisters. The best way to prevent this from happening is to make sure you buy shoes that are your size and also try and switch up the shoes you wear. If you already know that a certain pair of sandals gives you blisters, put a Band-Aid on the area where it is most likely to cause soreness As much as we all love to expose our toes to the summer sun, we must resist the urge to walk around barefoot. "Walking around barefoot (on surfaces other than grass or the sand) exposes your feet to a variety of bacteria, viruses (warts), and fungi (athletes foot). These types of risks thrive in areas that are warm and wet like around pools and public restrooms. Your bare feet are at risk to be harmed from unexpected objects like glass and splinters. To avoid getting hurt, try reducing the amount of time you spend barefoot, it may be time to invest in a pair of comfy flip flops that you can easily slip on and off. Lastly, if you are going to walk barefoot remember to wash your feet immediately afterwards. Last, but not least, this final tip will benefit your entire body, not just your feet. Make sure to drink plenty of water and keep yourself hydrated. Just like the rest of your body, you need to keep your blood pumping to your feet so that you can have healthy circulation. Drinking water will help keep you cool and flush out any unwanted bacteria's that may be lurking through your bloodstream So remember when you’re getting ready lounge in the summer sun, exfoliating and moisturizing will keep your feet soft and smooth, switch up your shoes to prevent blisters, avoid walking barefoot and keep yourself hydrated. With these tips in mind your feet will look beautiful in the sun and feel that way too. . By Alicia McCoy

Summer’s Best Beauty Delicacies

by Alicia Mccoy

Lets face it, as much as we love going to the beach, wearing the latest summer trends and spending those late summer nights with friends, the best part of summer is all of the delicious foods that are enjoyed during the season. Here are some foods that not only will be pleasing to your tummy, but other parts of you as well. Having that shimmering glow is a must for your skin during the summer, but that can’t be accomplished if one does not take proper care to protect their skin from too much sun. Eating foods like tomatoes, in addition to wearing sunscreen, will help keep your skin from being exposed to harmful ultraviolet rays. Lycopene is the compound that gives tomatoes their bright red color and also protects the skin from turning that same color from sunburn. It’s been found that those who eat the recommended amount have seen up to 40 and 50 percent more skin protection. This delicious summer fruit has also been known to prevent skin sagging and wrinkles. Other foods with this compound include pink grapefruit and carrots.

Try adding fresh tomato salad , tomato juice, or tomato sauce on pasta to your diet.

While spending the summer outdoors indulging in warm weather and cool swimming pools, it’s also important to make sure your hair stays healthy and strong. Mixing eggs with your regular shampoo or conditioner will help moisturize and strengthen your hair against harsh summer heat and damage caused by chlorine. The large amounts of protein, fat and nutrients found in eggs have been known to keep hair moisturized and add volume, shine and texture. The whites of the egg contain enzymes that attack certain bacteria and unwanted oils. But be warned, whichever part of the egg you choose to use, do not rinse the egg out with hot water. Doing this will cause some of the egg to cook and scramble. Lastly, having healthy nails will make your favorite nail polish look that much better. The nutrients needed to help your nails can be found in various types of foods, even those previously mentioned. This summer try eating foods that contain the vitamin Biotin. Adding this vitamin to your summer diet will help with brittle nails, adding a beautiful thickness to the nail plate. The best way to obtain this vitamin would be to incorporate foods such as romaine lettuce, carrots, walnuts, tomatoes and cucumbers into a gorgeous summer salad. So sit back and relax this summer and enjoy all the natural beauty of the foods you eat 28 Nationalistmag.com

Demi Lavato “Demi was released on May 10, 2013. The fourth album for this singer / songwriter. Straying from the R&B styles featured in Unbroken, this is a little bit different but it has some great songs that I think will add to her collections of hits. Her single Made in America was released July 2013.

Music Budweiser Made in America Festival Come this Labor Day Philly will be rocking like never before with a crazy lineup . An exciting, two - day music festival in Philadelphia, Jay – Z will curate the blockbuster roster of talent, which will include nearly 30 artists that embody the American spirit performing across three stages on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. The eclectic roster of talent cultivated by JayZ include acts ranging from rock, hip-hop, R&B, Latin and dance. Beyoncé, Nine Inch Nails, Deadmau5 and Phoenix are set to headline the second edition of Budweiser's Made in America Festival. Queens of the Stone Age, Calvin Harris, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, A$AP Rocky, Wiz Khalifa, the Gaslight Anthem, Public Enemy and Solange. You can check out this year's entire Budweiser Made in America lineup on madeinamericafest.com

For year two Jay-Z will not be headlining but we hope he will be there for the festivities and to cheer on his amazing wife. Budweiser and Jay-Z wanted a diverse lineup spanning sounds and styles for the second year of the festival and I believe they have delivered just that. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer filmed the last years festival lfor a documentary about Made in America and Jay-Z's rise to fame. Hopefully we will be able to see that before or during the event. What a great way to end the summer, I know I will be headed off to Philadelphia to close out my summer with some good friends, good music and good food. Nationalist will be posting pictures of the event all weekend long so check out Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for behind the scenes of the event . Send us your pics and we may post them or include then in next months issue. For more info on tickets, location, and lodging . Go to nationalistmag.com

Music Highlight

Matt and Kim ★★★★★5 Stars For many bands, making music is all about the routine of recording an annual album, or being able to tour in progressively bigger venues. Not Matt and Kim. "Our goal is to make music we want to hear," says Matt Johnson, who co-founded the band with Kim Schifino. "When it comes time to make a new album, I'm just so excited, since I know we have all these ideas and I just want to get them out there." As for the band's extra-emphatic live shows, which these days happen in large venues, he explains, "We've always just really enjoyed playing music, and things have kept growing." Matt and Kim's enthusiasm comes across loud and clear on the band's new album, Lightning, its most diverse and developed to date. From the relentless drive of “Now” to the dance-fueled beat of “Let’s Go” to the more contemplative “Ten Dollars I Found,” Lightning is the strongest distillation yet of Matt and Kim’s unique sound: a spunky hybrid of indelible songs, an emphatic beat and almost tangible energy, mixed with the duo’s influence of listening nonstop to Top 40 Hip-Hop and pop-punk. 54 Nationalistmag.com

Music Highlight

To make the album, Matt and Kim spent six months working in their home studio in Brooklyn, producing the record themselves. Lightning is a touch more minimal than their earlier work – with layers taken away, instead of added, enabling its intense performances and memorable tunes to really come to the forefront. “What’s made the songs on this album really strong is we’ve been able to pull a lot off – to not have so much going on – and still have a strong song,” Kim explains. “It’s easier to make a song with a lot going on,” Matt adds. “It feels very safe. It’s like putting on a lot of clothes: you feel all covered up so no one can judge just one aspect of it, but when you try to break it down to be as simple as can be, you’re really baring it all. When you can see clearly what’s going on, those are the times that the songs are easiest to connect to.” Connecting with their audience is certainly a key focus for Matt and Kim. The indie dance duo’s live shows – which are legendary for constant, in-your-face exuberance – feel more like vibrant, sweaty loft parties than traditional concerts, for both audiences and the band. “I think we’ve managed to continue to make them feel intimate,” says Matt. “When we first started playing venues instead of playing on the floor at parties, we tried hard to keep the vibe of ‘we’re all doing this together and having a wild time’ going. The show is not just the two of us: it’s the 3002 of us, or however big the venue is.” If I can only see one show this summer this would be the one I would pick it not only has the best music but the show will leave you with a smile for days afterward. You know how a song can get stuck in your head, well this is a feeling that gets stuck and it’s a good one!

When did you decide to make the move from Texas to Los Angeles? I can remember it very vividly actually. I was in the 10th grade and one day I left school and just knew that I never wanted to go back there. I told my mom about my decision and we ended up leaving Dallas and we moved out to LA. What was it like to work on the tv series “The Lying Game” ? It was such an incredible experience. I learned so much from the experience of being on the show. The opportunity to work with such an incredible cast and crew was so wonderful. The crew and the cast were so fantastic and I am really going to miss all of them. My character Laurel will be especially missed but she will always have a special place in my heart. Tell us about your band “The Good Mad” The band includes myself, Adam Brooks and Andy Fischer-Price. Based on the instruments the three of us play our sound just kind of came together, a kind of American folk sound. For all of us, harmonies are really important so we try to include that in our music. Some of our biggest influences are Fleetwood mac and the Dixie chicks. Four our first EP “Alta” we recorded in Nashville but we actually recorded the EP “Strangeworthy” in Austin and it was in amazing experience. We went in to the studio really prepared, and we got to meet Adam’s parents Nationalistmag.com

since they were in Austin. It was great to have our producers on hand in case anything went wrong or to help us through the recording process. We are having an amazing time performing and both of our EP’s are available on iTunes. How many musical instruments do you play? Do you have a favorite instrument? I can really only play the violin on an expert level. I also play the mandolin, guitar, and a little bit of piano. If I had to have a favorite I would say the violin is my favorite instrument. Do you believe in purchasing American made brands? I absolutely do. I think that buying locally is really important. I try to purchase foods from farmers markets and products from small local businesses. I think it is important to buy from other places as well depending on the product. I also think we make some pretty good make up over here as well. Do you think the American dream is realistic to achieve? I feel that people coming and living in America is still achievable. I think it is easier for some people than other people based on what their dream is. For instance someone whose American dream is to be a doctor and laywer can go to college and go on that path to start their careers in an easier way, than someone who is trying to start their own business or help out the less fortunate in other countries or become a superstar. I think the American dream is still possible to achieve. Where, in your opinion, is the best place to vacation in the United States of America? I would have to say Hawaii. Usually when I go I stay on the Maui Island. Maybe New York City as well for the best vacation. There are so many great places to go in the United States it is hard to choose just one. Are you a cat or a dog person? Definitely a dog person I have two dogs Lola and Milo. A Chihuahua and Charles king cavalier. I love them so much. What was it like to go on tour with Justin Bieber? It was an incredible and insane experience. We (The Stunners) were afraid of how his fans would react to an all girl group being that most of his fans are female.

They accepted us and it was amazing. It was like being on a traveling summer camp with your four best girlfriends playing to audiences of thousands. We gained a lot of fans on the tour and had an amazing time. It was crazy because it was my first tour ever, and it was the biggest tour in the world. Which artist or actor do you admire the most? The first person that I really admired was the Dixie chicks fiddler Martie Maguire. But really all of the Dixie Chicks girls are huge inspirations for me. I also really admire The Beatles and their overall coolness. We have heard you are a big fashionista, do you have any favorite stores or a distinct style? My style is constantly evolving, and I am excited about it. As I get older my style is changing and I’m moving away from the teen look. I really love TopShop, Burberry and Cavalli. I know those are a little on the expensive side but I am shooting for the stars here. What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone looking to become a triple threat in Hollywood? I would tell them to stay focused. So many people come out here every day and are working to make it so it is tough. Don’t get caught up in the glitz in the glamour try to stay focused and work hard to get what you want. Do you have any upcoming projects we should know about? I have a Hallmark movie coming out in September. I also have another movie not sure when exactly it is coming out. The Good Mad has a few live shows planned that I am really excited about. Also, I am constantly working on my music and auditioning for acting roles while living my dream every day. How do you stay in touch with your fans? I use my Facebook page and my twitter handle. I think if you search me on Facebook it is the first main one that pops up, there are so many fake Allies on there. I also love twitter, and connecting with fans on that site at @go_nino Nationalistmag.com

Hipsters, Food Joints and Vintage Galore

by Lincoln McElwee

The Growing “Destination Scene” in Orange, California It’s a calm, warm morning in Orange, California and the streets are noticeably empty. I drive by a multitude of closed stores, quaint little craftsman houses with their American flags waving in the morning breeze and tenement houses that have obviously seen better days. By the time I reach the heart of Orange, I can tell that the breakfast brigade is out in full force. To many people, Orange, California may seem like the typical American town: quiet, sleepy and steeped in tradition. With its manicured lawns and beautiful homes, the city is indeed a bastion of Orange County tradition. And though the city is probably most known for being home to Chapman University, there is still a lot more to the place than initially meets the eye! Indeed, the downtown scene in Orange, California has been growing into a veritable scene for hipsters and lovers of all things antique. The most popular section is known as “the Circle,” as it is a roundabout with the city’s two major streets intersecting it: Glassell and Chapman. The Circle is a combination of old-school charm, countless vintage malls and stores, boutique clothing, and a plethora of establishments for the hipster crowd to eat, drink and be merry.

Before I get there, I drive past the Chapman Coffee House with its green façade and laptops peeking through the windows. And then Chapman University files by, with the obligatory groups of college students meandering about the green. They all seem to look like they’ve fallen out of an Abercrombie & Fitch ad. They look as if they’ve all just woken up. And many are walking around in what looks like their pajamas. It seems that people have been lining up and camping out in front of Bruxie since before dawn. The heat lamps aren’t on and every seat is filled. The crowd is a mixture of sweaters with college names, tracksuits, blue jeans, plaid and beanies. And I don’t blame the crowd: Bruxie’s gourmet waffle sandwiches are heaven on earth, and I’ve stood in line there many a time to score one of their Photo by Courtesy of Chapman Coffee House

prosciutto and gruyere waffle sandwiches, or my favorite, the Ogura Bruxie, an Asian-inspired sandwich with red bean and sweet cream. Rutabagorz is closed, it still being so early. The place is usually packed with people. It offers plenty of vegetarian dishes as well as lean meats and healthy alternatives. They even do a pretty decent gluten-free menu, which is why I love this place so much. To my left, the Filling Station is mobbed. Behind the white picket fences, people are eating their omelets and drinking mimosas with sunglasses on and shorts. College kids look tired and sleepy. The waitresses are perky. And the coffee-only crowds have saturated the Starbucks near the cigar shop. A guy sits out on a bench with a thin novel in hand, his pint-sized dog sitting obediently in his lap and in a rugged-looking brown leather harness. Even Kimmie’s Coffee Cup – my favorite breakfast stop – is packed to the brim with families and hipsters and out-of-towners. There are people waiting outside with their dogs on leashes. Two German Shepherds are playing so animatedly that they’re actually in the street, though their owner has no clue as she sips her coffee with relative ease. I love the cinnamon roll pancakes and the huevos rancheros at Kimmie’s, not to mention the coffee to go.

There are a few people waiting sitting on the ground in front of Haven Gastropub. The Haven Gastropub offers some amazingly high-quality food, and reminds me of dining in Napa Valley. The truffle fries, with house-made truffle salt and garlic aioli, are out of this world. The mac n’ cheese comes with black truffles. My favorite is the lamb burger, with onion jam, tzatziki, onion sprouts, and a rosemary brioche bun. Next to the Haven Gastropub is the Antique Station, an antique mall with a plethora of used and antique goods to choose from. Across the street from this store is the Antique Depot, also filled to the brim with antique bric-a-bracs and unique finds. The Orange Circle Antique Mall is a little further down, as well as the Army Navy Store, where used gear can be purchased for costumes or regular wear. A great vintage store is Lost & Found, where you can purchase unique clothing from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. As well as making a point to stop here every time I’m in the city, I also make it a point to stop in at Joyride, a vintage clothing and accessories store for men. I can’t stress enough how much I love Joyride. It’s been in business for three years now, and is actually an offshoot of Elsewhere Vintage, a women’s vintage shop that has been in business for five years. Aside from Mr. C’s Records, a few stores down from Haven Gastropub, ( havengastropub.com ) Joyride is a place where I can seriously spend a paycheck in the blink of an eye, whether it’s on authentic footwear, pipes, glasses, jewelry, or sweaters. A trip to Joyride and Orange, California is like Christmas come early, and oh how I love Christmas! 106 Nationalistmag.com

Vintage Redux

by Lincoln McElwee

The Little-Known Vintage Shopping Haunts of Downtown Fullerton, California.

Ask yourself what comes to mind when thinking of the O.C. and you’ll probably imagine surfboards and sunblock, beach sand and worn, wooden piers jutting from the shallows of coastal water. Or maybe you connect to the television show – you know, the one starring Mischa Barton, Adam Brody, and Ben McKenzie – the one that was actually filmed in Los Angeles County.

Regardless of what you think of as the real O.C., there are endless exceptions to every “rule” in Orange County; in other words, Orange Country both is and is not what you perceive it to be. It is a universe of worlds where board shorts are still worn but where vintage is king and hipsters walk the beat in tow with other believers of the retro scene. One such world is Fullerton, California, located in northern Orange County. Here, the vintage clothing shops of Downtown Fullerton have been making a remarkable fashion statement in their offerings of all things vintage! I recently traveled to Downtown Fullerton on a steampunkinspired clothing bender; this year’s Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Irwindale, California featured Steampunk Day on April 21st and I knew Fullerton would be a good fit for the theme-inspired weekend. Harbor Boulevard cuts its way through downtown Fullerton, flanked on both sides by eateries and vintage stores. To the south, Chapman Avenue intersects with Harbor Boulevard, and a few stores further down from this intersection lies Ipso Facto, arguably on the more expensive side of the vintage/retro outfitters, but a key player in the city’s retro retail. Ipso Facto is primarily known as a Gothic fashion store, with Industrial, Steampunk, Punk, and Victorian fashion thrown in for good measure. Though the prices are on the higher end for some of the

merchandise, Ipso Facto is a one-stop shop for all of your outfitting needs as the store also includes a plethora of accessories, as well as music, books and shoes. After drooling over the store’s steampunk outfits on display, I picked up a few pieces of steampunk jewelry and a pair of goggles. I have to admit that my favorite part of Ipso Facto is the stand of free comics by the door! To the north of Chapman Avenue, and before Harbor Boulevard intersects with East Commonwealth Avenue, lies the bulk of the vintage shops that are situating downtown Fullerton as a noteworthy addition to the vintage/retro trend. My favorite place among the lot is American Vintage, located at 210 North Harbor Boulevard. The store is massive, with men’s clothing and the dressing rooms on the right side of the store (from the entrance) and women’s on the left. The store has belts in the back and accessories around the register in glass cases and on display. Used shoes are displayed on racks above the clothing, as well as hats. Most everything is arranged by color or type of clothing, such as all men’s vests in one area, and all men’s leather jackets in another. From a turnstile near the entrance with ties and suspenders, I was able to snag some wonderful vintage suspenders with a crazy assortment of metal pins and buttons on them. Nationalistmag.com

117

I also found a nice pair of some navy blue sailor pants. I made plans to go back for an awesome leather jacket and a pair of cowboy boots as well. Ever since I was a kid and watched my mother and father getting ready to go country-line dancing with their matching pairs of cowboy boots, I’ve always wanted a pair. The prices at American Vintage are extremely reasonable and the store has some great clothing to choose from, whether you’re looking for a theme-inspired outfit or simply to feel fashionably retro! Stray Cat Vintage and Costumes, which has been in business since 1989, is located at 108 North Harbor Boulevard. This place is the mecca warehouse of vintage clothing. It might seem a bit pricey, but the pieces are truly vintage and often one-of-akind. Just listening to owner -----as she takes you through the store is worth the visit! Her obvious love for what she does, and for the clothing she sells, as well as her willingness to help you find exactly the look you are searching for, is indispensable and a true definition of having passion for her profession. I snagged a suede vest and some steampunk-inspired jewelry. I had actually gone to the store previously to find a renaissance outfit – and find one I did – before I learned of the Steampunk Day. Out of Vogue, actually located on Commonwealth Boulevard, has clothing for sale in addition to the furniture and vintage bric-a-bracs that are also on display. ModTex, at 122 North Harbor Boulevard, is the place I usually end up for my regular clothing needs. I’ve found countless vintage/retro shirts at really good prices at ModTex, and I almost bought a leather jacket from the store when shopping there for my Steampunk Day gear as well. Buffalo Exchange is another well-known option for vintage shoppers, and whether buying or selling clothing at the store, there is always a plethora of clothing, accessories, and shoes to choose from. There are of course plenty of other shops, some that specialize in women’s clothing, and some that specialize in just vintage furniture, which can be found in downtown Fullerton. So if you happen to be looking for a scene that is a bit different from your perception of the sand and surf crowd, try downtown Fullerton and it vintage/retro scene. You’ll be glad you did! The Seductive Sights & Sounds of Berkeley, CA & UC Berkeley’s Greek Theatre

On a recent weekend getaway, I traveled up to Berkeley, California to witness the brilliance that is the XX play the Greek Theatre. Hundred Waters, a band recently signed to Skrillex’s label OWSLA, opened for the trio, and the concert in its entirety was one of the best experiences I’ve had this year!

As my girlfriend and I touched down at Oakland International Airport the day before the XX played, we were thrilled to get away from Orange County and out to the bay; the vacation felt like it was long overdue and the gorgeous weather looked as if it, too, would add to our idea of a perfect California weekend along the coast. We stayed at the Double Tree by Hilton at the Berkeley Marina, and as we learned from other guests of the hotel, it was indeed a busy weekend for UC Berkeley: Mumford & Sons had already played two nights of a three-night gig at the Greek Theatre and would be finishing their gig that very same night with Michael Kiwanuka and the Mystery Jets kicking off the show. That evening, the city was pulsating from all of the concert energy. You could feel it in the streets and in the parks, at the metro stations and even in the taxis. We took the hotel shuttle up to the Greek Theatre, the very last stop. Everyone else was headed to the show, anxious to get there for a place in line, while we just went along for the ride. A couple near the back of the shuttle had brought along their six-year old son who knew most of the words to Mumford and Sons’ newest album, Babel, already – Mumford and Sons at the Greek Theatre was to be his very first concert experience. The crowds were amped and the feeling of the place was exceptionally vibrant. Walking back down the road on Hearst St. was like walking against the flow of traffic.

We stopped off at the Pho Bar on Euclid Ave. for a bit of a breather. I ordered the Broken Rice Plate – pork over broken Jasmine rice with a fried egg on top – and my girlfriend ordered the Chicken Pho. We sat there in the dining hall area, the last customers of the night, wondering what our concert experience the next day would entail. The next day, as we walked through a farmer’s market near the downtown Metro station, I could smell the amazingly fresh and aromatic aroma of Blue Bottle Coffee filtering through the warm morning air. That signature blue bottle on the eco-friendly coffee cup stared up at me as I waited impatiently for the wet grinds to finish dripping. Already sweating from the heat of the day, I cherished that warm cup of coffee as if my life depended on it. And in a way it did: not only am I addicted to coffee, but one of my guiltiest pleasures in life is going “coffee bar-hopping” in the bay area, with Blue Bottle Coffee being my favorite place to visit. The relaxing, dream-like warmth of the coffee was the prefect precursor to the XX. The Dream Photo Courtesy of thephobar.com

Pop labeled genre of their music, which we’d be hearing in less than seven hours, is currently another one of my addictions. It’s funny; many people have commented that the XX’s music is the perfect breakup music. As it turns out, it was the first band that I introduced my girlfriend to, and it’s the band that we always reference, always listen to, together. The lyrics are so gorgeously sung by both the male and female vocalists, and the guitars pull at every chord and fiber in your chest as they crone out their rich melodies. If I had to choose a single word to describe the XX’s music, I’d simply say ‘seductive’ – a throbbing, dreamy, strumming seduction. As usual, by the end of the night my throat was hoarse from all of the singing out loud – just about the only time I sing out loud aside from the shower is at a concert, so I never miss the chance. Even if I don’t know all of the words to a song, I’ll still belt out a questionably sound yet reasonably close facsimile at a concert! But I knew the words to the XX. And as my favorite songs were played, such as “Angel,” “Fiction,” “Shelter,” and “Try,” my girlfriend and I took turns as lead vocalists during our favorite parts of our favorite songs. And though I probably spent more money on food at the Greek – street tacos and beer: yes! – the entire experience was one of those moments that you play and replay and play again in your mind, that you gel with and hum along with like your favorite song on repeat. by Lincoln McElwee

Safety First! Ways to keep your pet well this summer. By Tracey Griswold

Photos courtesy of coolvest.com

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, but for your pet summer can also be a dangerous time. As the temperature begins to rise, so do your pet’s chances of developing heat stroke. Taking the proper precautions for your pet can allow both of you to safely enjoy all that summer has to offer. When taking your pet for a walk, choose times where the temperature outside is much cooler, such as earlier in the morning or later in the evening. Cement can get uncomfortably hot for your pet’s sensitive paws. Luckily, there are now products such as Paw Tectors Dog Paw Protection that cover your pet’s paws, and allow for protection against the hot pavement as well as other elements. You can find these paw covers online at PetSmart. Although it is advised to keep your pet indoors when living in a hot climate, this is not always possible or desired. There are now products

such as cooling vests and collars to keep your pet from getting overheated in the summer months. Glacier Teck makes high quality vests for dogs as well as other pets, which are guaranteed to keep your pet cool. Although expensive, these vests can be used in the most extreme environments and are completely non-toxic. For more information on these cooling vests please visit their website at coolvest.com. If you are looking for a more cost effective and less cumbersome way to keep your pet cool, Kool Collar is another wonderful option. This product attaches to your pet around the neck and can be used both indoors and out. With the Kool Collar you are provided with a freezer tube, which is inserted into the collar after being put into the freezer. When outside you can also fill the collar with ice cubes to keep your pet cool. The Kool Collar can keep your pet comfortable for up to fifty minutes before needing to refreeze. You can purchase the Kool Collar on their website Keeping your pet hydrated is another must for preventing heat related illness. Carrying a water bottle for your pet at all times is advisable to help prevent them from getting overheated. Although the precautions above can assist in preventing heat stroke, it is also important to be aware of the symptoms that can indicate a pet on the verge of overheating. According to Pets WebMD, look out for a pet that is heavily panting, having difficulty breathing, vomiting and/or having diarrhea. You may also notice that your pet’s tongue turns bright red and he or she becomes unsteady. As heat stroke progresses seizures can occur and eventually death. Always be aware that although you may be enjoying the warm weather, your pet may have a different reaction to it. Discussing any questions you have with your veterinarian, you can assure that your pet and you will have a safe, fun-filled summer.

Pets Are Welcome Top travel tips when traveling with your furry friend this summer. By Tracey Griswold

Traveling with your pet can be a nervewracking experience, but with the tips below you can count on trouble – free travels. Depending on your mode of transportation, you will need to prepare a few items. When traveling by airplane it is important to check with your designated airline on the guidelines for approved crates to house your pet during the flight. Stella and Chewy’s: The Raw Approach By Tracey Griswold When I first brought home my French bulldog, Tank, I struggled to find a dog food he would actually eat. I tried all different varieties of food, but with each one he would refuse to eat, or become sick minutes after he took a bite. I had also started to notice that he seemed to have itchy skin, and was lethargic for a puppy. I finally had a friend recommend Stella and Chewy’s, a raw food diet for dogs. I was so desperate to get Tank to eat that I ran out and bought Stella and Chewy’s that day, and haven’t looked back since. Stella and Chewy’s is an American produced brand that contains only the best ingredients for your pet. According to Stella and Chewy’s, their brand’s focus is on feeding your pet as simply and naturally as possible. Their food contains organic produce and USDA inspected raw meat. All of their food is tested for harmful bacteria so you can rest assure that your pet is consuming a safe and healthy raw food. Stella and Chewy’s makes both dog and cat food and comes in frozen or freeze-dried patties. When using the frozen patties, it is advised that you thaw out a patty overnight by putting it in the refrigerator before consumption. Never leave a patty out of the refrigerator for too long, as it can become spoiled. When traveling with your pet, freeze- dried patties are ideal. You do not have to worry about refrigerating them; just add water before consumption as instructed by the package. For dogs the food selection includes beef, chicken, duck, rabbit, lamb, venison, and salmon. I’ve found that Tank prefers rabbit and venison the most, however I’ve heard all selections are equally popular. For cats there are only freeze-dried meals that include chicken, salmon and chicken, duck, herring and tuna, salmon and cod, and turkey. Stella and Chewy’s also make treats that are just as delicious and healthy for your pet. After having Tank on this raw diet for almost a year, I see substantial improvement in him. I never have to try and coax him to eat; his food is literally gone in less than a minute. He also no longer has issues with vomiting or itching, his coat looks shinier, and the veterinarian says he’s at a much healthier weight now. When deciding to switch your dog or cat to Stella and Chewy’s, make sure to follow the instructions on the back of the package, mixing in Stella and Chewy’s with your pet’s other food. Switching too quickly can cause your pet to have an upset stomach, so make sure to slowly transition their food. Although I highly recommend the raw diet approach to feeding your pet, always discuss with your veterinarian if a raw diet is suitable for your dog or cat.
