Playing With Fire
have always had a good sense of personal finance. Even when I was a little kid I understood the importance of making more money than you spend, and I would work whatever odd jobs I could find in the neighborhood to add to my savings. Perhaps it comes from having parents who grew up during the Depression, and simply absorbing their attitude about money. Wherever it came from, it’s an ethic that has served me well as the owner of a small business over the past 30 years, or at least I think it has. I’ve known many others who have grown their companies much faster by borrowing as much money as they could get their hands on, while we rarely financed anything and relied on our own cash flow as much as possible. I can’t really tell you that our way was better because I have no way to prove it, but I do know that the majority of those businesses are long gone. My interest in saving and investing has led me to acquire a passable knowledge of financial markets and the products that are bought and sold in them. I’m not about to start a second career as a bond trader at Goldman Sachs, nor do I claim to fully understand the complex derivatives that helped cause the banking crisis of 2008, but I have a basic understanding of your more prosaic investments. It is important, however, not to confuse personal finance with economics, about which I know next to nothing. Economics is the science that studies the creation of capital, its movement throughout the world and its effect on labor markets, interest rates, inflation, and so on. Whenever the news media, or anyone else, talks about economics, most people’s eyes glaze over. We would rather hear stories about Casey Anthony,
or Jodi Arias, or George Zimmerman. There is an old expression in the newspaper business, “If it bleeds, it leads,” because violence is the element that draws and holds our attention at some instinctive level. Monetary policy, not so much. At an NSSEA show a few years ago, I was chatting with a couple friends of mine about the financial mess that our country seems to be perpetually mired in. They are both much more knowledgeable about economic issues than I am, and at some point in the conversation I referred to the Federal Reserve Board as being a part of the federal government. They both shook their heads. “You mean it’s not?” I said. “How’s that possible? It controls our currency. The president appoints the members. I’ve seen their building, right there on the National Mall. If it’s not part of the federal government, what is it?” The answer, apparently, is that “the Fed” is an entity unto itself, created by the government but acting independently of it. In structure it is similar to the Supreme Court, but governors are not appointed for life and it is not prescribed by the Constitution. Its function is to serve as the central bank of the United States, and its enormous power lies in its ability to create money. We have not always had a central bank, and in fact the current Fed represents our third attempt to create one. The first version opened for business in 1791, just a few years after our founding. It issued currency, lent money to banks, purchased securities, and acted as fiscal agent for the government, which was required to purchase 20 percent of the bank’s stock. The rest of the stock was purchased by private investors. (continued on page 6)

The system worked fairly well, but it had its detractors, including state banks which considered it a competitor and others who thought it would make its investors too rich and powerful. When its 20-year charter expired Congress failed to renew it, and for six years there was again no central bank. The Second Bank of the United States, pretty much identical to the first, was established in 1817. That one was killed off singlehanded by President Andrew Jackson, who vetoed the renewal of its charter in 1836 on the grounds that it was unfair to grant a public monopoly that enriched individuals. For the following 77 years there was no central bank, although a system of national banks was established during the Civil War in order to standardize a national currency that was backed by treasury bonds. I know, I know. Your eyelids are getting heavy. It would be a lot easier to tell this story if somebody would just murder her boyfriend or something, but I’ll cut to the chase in a minute. Without a central bank the supply of money was difficult to control, and individual banks could easily get into trouble whenever depositors got worried about getting their money out. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there was a series of panics, leading up to a severe crisis in 1907. At that point the highrollers like J.P. Morgan and the Rockefellers began to quietly discuss the need for a central bank, and in 1910 a small group of bankers got together in secret at Jekyll Island in Georgia and designed the Federal Reserve System. Their plan was passed by Congress in 1913. The Fed has accumulated a number of responsibilities over the intervening years, along with the powers required to carry them out, but thankfully I have neither the time nor the inclination to get into most of them. The one I’m concerned about, that I think everyone should be getting nervous about, is monetary policy, or managing the total amount of money available to our economy. It has three tools to control the money supply. One is by setting the “discount rate,” which is the interest rate
The industry’s leading at which commercial banks borrow from the Federal Reserve System, and another is by determining the amount of funds banks must hold in reserve. The third, and here’s the kicker, is that the Fed can buy (or sell) U.S. Treasury securities and other debt instruments. Following the financial crisis of 2008 and the near collapse of our economy, the Fed began a program it called “quantitative easing,” which meant buying mortgage-backed securities, bank debt and Treasury notes to inject money into the economy. Over two years it spent about $600 billion. In November 2010 it started a second round of buying, which was widely referred to as QE2 (not to be confused with the ocean liner), and amounted to another $600 billion. Then last fall it began round three, through which it is currently spending 85 billion dollars a month, with no end in sight. All of this amounts to a nearly unfathomable amount of money. It has been the main driver behind the run up in the stock market and the turnaround in the real estate market, which together have finally got the economy starting to pick up steam. That’s great, but let’s remember that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Our economy has become totally addicted to the steady infusion of cash. When Ben Bernanke suggested to a Congressional hearing on June 19 that the Fed would at some point need to start tapering down the stimulus, the stock market dropped by 4.3 percent in three days. He later backed off those remarks and the markets went back up. Too much money in circulation causes inflation, and inflation destroys economies. We have been pouring gasoline on a smoldering fire for a very long time, and I am very afraid that someday it’s going to blow up in our faces. But enough about economics. How about that royal baby, huh?

Program Rather than wait for business to come to them, teacher store owners in Michigan go out and get it using fun events by Alyssa LaFaro
“We host more than 100 family game nights a year,” says Nancy Korte, owner of 17-year-old Learning Gizmos in Warren, Michigan. If that sounds like too much work, know this. 1. Nancy and her two sisters Linda Carless and Carol Korte have been passionate game players since they were kids. For them, game nights are fun, and 2. it’s worth it to their business. The three sisters attribute most of their instore foot traffic to the exposure they get at game nights and other programs they plan and execute throughout the year. “We do all kinds of events – instore, in-school and special sales like our Teacher Swap,” explains Nancy. “They keep us connected to our market.
From left: sisters Carol, Linda and Nancy
Our events create goodwill and make the community aware of all the products and services we offer to support them. “Sales are stronger and larger when they’re based on long-term relationships,” she adds. “Word of mouth is positive, not because Learning Gizmos is a few cents cheaper, but because our customers know we understand, appreciate and support them.” If you’re looking for some creative event ideas, the Learning Gizmos sisters share some of theirs here.
Swap ’til they drop “Year after year, teachers lamented that they didn’t have a way to sell all the supplies and resources they don’t use anymore,” says Nancy. “They didn’t want to simply give them away, so

Linda came up with an idea to host a garage-sale-like event called a Teacher Swap. It was so successful last year that a second one was held this July. Each teacher/vendor paid $20 for a table in the parking lot to display their used resources, which sold for 10 to 20 cents on the dollar. “First-time teachers thought they’d died and gone to heaven,” she laughs. “Each one left with three to four bags full of classroom products for only $10 or so. They were very grateful.” “It was a blast!” her sister Carol adds. “One of the teacher’s ‘booths’ had completely sold out with two hours still left in the sale. Another teacher made $350!” As a happy side note, Learning Gizmos did a booming business that

day. “It was for the teachers to sell their stuff; it was not about us,” says Nancy, “but we thought, ‘They’re in the parking lot, they’ll probably come inside at some point,’ so we gave them a coupon for 25 percent off one item. The result? Phenomenal sales.”
A real treat During the last three weeks of August, local schools are invited to bring their teachers into the store for a free catered lunch, plus shopping time. The event, called Eat at a Terrific Teacher Store, or “EATTS,” is a real treat in more ways than one. Shoppers get a delicious lunch, plus 10 percent off their purchases. “Then, because we send a simplified bill directly to the school for teachers’ purchases, everyone wins: The teachers don’t have to spend their own money and hope to get reimbursed, and the schools don’t have to deal with dozens of reimbursement forms and hundreds of individual receipts,” explains Nancy.
Limbo for a deal The first weekend in August is the store’s annual “Hawaiian Sale.” Nancy and her sisters have been hosting this event since the store’s inception in 1996. Because customers can’t get low with the hula, they limbo for a discount. The lower they go, the higher the discount – up to 50 percent off one item. For those who would just rather not, the store offers other Hawaiian-themed percent-off chances. September 2013 — ShopSchoolSupplies.com 9
The best part is the raffle, with prizes donated by industry vendors. In each of 11 canvas tote bags donated by Scholastic, the sisters pack $75 worth of product. There’s a bag for every grade level K through 8, plus a parent’s bag and children’s bag. Customers place their raffle tickets in a bowl in front of the bag they want to win. “We also raffle off our bulletin board displays,” adds Nancy. “We put together 15 different ones and hang them from the ceiling.” Her sister Linda dresses up as the “prize fairy” with angel wings and a wand. She circulates through the store asking trivia questions, like “How many Learning Gizmos sisters are there?” (Answer: five) The person with the correct answer wins a prize.
“Hot Diggity Dogs” “We hold this event in June or July to introduce the new products for the upcoming school year,” says Nancy. Everything in the store is discounted 15 percent. Free hot dogs are served in the parking lot, and the store’s giant popcorn machine runs all day.
Workshops kick off science fair season “Science fairs are huge in metro-Detroit,” says Nancy. The fairs are good for Learning Gizmos’ business because they allow Nancy to assist with a big challenge parents often face: the late-night or lastminute need for those science kits. To solve that problem, Nancy contacted her cousin, Chris Livingston, a science teacher, to develop a workshop for children and parents. “Our goal is to put them at ease with their projects,” says Nancy. From January through March each year, Chris takes it on the road. “For many schools, it’s their science fair program kick-off,” she notes. “Chris’s presentation starts with a one-hour explanation on the scientific method, followed by an interactive experiment. For the parents, he presents and discusses completed science fair project boards.” 10 EducationalDealerMagazine.com — September 2013

More about game nights Like the science fair workshops, Learning Gizmos’ game nights are a road show. The game night “teams” travel to schools first to teach the games – all aligned to Common Core – to teachers and parent volunteers, and then oversee the event while families play the games, which are sold throughout the event. They charge $100 to pay for marketing; the school receives 10 percent of the total game sales. A typical game night showcases games that reinforce skills in language arts, geography, science, critical thinking and minor math, but participating

schools can choose to highlight a specific subject if they like. A crowd of anywhere between 125 to 300 participants is the norm. Soon, similar game nights will be offered by Learning Gizmos to a totally different market: senior citizens in Lakeland, Florida. Sister Laura, who lives there with her family, heads up the effort. “Instead of at schools, they’ll be held in nursing homes, assisted living centers and senior communities,” explains Nancy. “We offer games that can stimulate the brain, encourage memory skills and evoke fun all at the same time.”

STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE
Learning Tools for
Skill-Building Fun by Ellen Metrick, Lekotek
More teachers and therapists than ever before will be coming into your store for toys, games and manipulatives to help teach children with special needs. Statistics show that one in 20 kids today has a disability, and one in 50 kids is on the autism spectrum. To help them learn, the employment of special education teachers is expected to increase by 17 percent by the year 2020. And don’t forget parents. A fifth of U.S. families with children have at least one child with special needs. In addition to skill-builders for home, parents will be looking for special gifts for the holidays. Both educators and families will turn to you and your staff for products that – in addition to being hardworking – are also kid-appealing. Every child learns better when the process is fun. So are you ready with your toy/game/gift recommendations for children with special needs? To help you, here are five categories of “skills to build,” along with play-and-learn characteristics to look for and suggested items that fit the bill.

In the latest Student Watch study conducted by OnCampus Research, a division of the National Association of College Stores (NACS), college students estimate they spend $662 annually on required course materials. While that
number is up slightly from the $655 reported a year ago, it is still down from the $702 reported five years ago, “While ANY increase is tough for students who continue to be pressured by the higher cost of attending college, it demonstrates that the money-saving strategies college stores have implemented continue to have an impact,” said Charles Schmidt, NACS’ director of public relations. College stores now routinely offer the option of renting a hard copy textbook – the format preferred by 77 percent of college students. The number of college stores offering textbook rental over the past three years has skyrocketed. Such print-version rental programs can save a student between 45 and 66 percent off the price of a new print textbook, Schmidt said.
In addition, college stores continue to work hard to increase their stock of used textbooks, a 25-percent savings for students; and digital, which can save students 40 percent off the new-text price. Some college stores also offer such innovations as guaranteed buyback, price-matching, free shipping and textbook sales the day before classes begin. Stores also are actively working with faculty and publishers to create custom educational products that enable professors to pick and choose the content they wish to present to their classes in the format they prefer, eliminating redundancies. “The result is a reasonablypriced ‘mashup’ of chapters from various textbooks,” Schmidt added. “A student would then only have to purchase one custom offering rather than several texts, reducing costs.”

Toby Prince from All About Education in Lexington, North Carolina “The new chevron-patterned décor from Creative Teaching Press (1) is doing very well. I think it’s because chevron has been such a popular pattern in clothing. “As far as workbooks go, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s On Core Series (2) has been our bestselling series of Common Core math workbooks. “People are really happy that Carson-Dellosa brought back the Language Arts 4 Today (3) and Math 4 Today (4) workbooks. Frank Schaffer Publications used to offer them, but they discontinued them at one point. Carson-Dellosa 22 EducationalDealerMagazine.com — September 2013
bought the company, however, and rereleased the titles. They have been really popular as of late.” Laurie Uherek from Educate & Celebrate Inc. in Prince Frederick, Maryland “From what I’ve heard, teachers are attending Common Core workshops, and I think that’s motivating them to get a head start on implementing Common Core into the classroom for next year. The Core Skills workbooks from Steck-Vaughn School Supply (5) (a Houghton Mifflin Harcourt company) do well for us. “The Summer Express workbooks from Scholastic (6) did well throughout the summer.

They continued to sell into August. “Mavalus Tape (7) is a constant bestseller. We keep it on our counters, and we replenish it daily. People seem to need it every day.” Luann Hundley from Above & Beyond Learning in Fort Mill, South Carolina “The Skill Builders workbooks by CarsonDellosa (8) were a parent favorite this summer. “The construction toy called ZOOB by Infinitoy (9) is popular. They are similar to LEGOs, except they have circular connec-
tors, so objects like wheels can actually be put into motion. They come in all sorts of kits from robots to racers. “In décor, one of CarsonDellosa’s newer patterns called Boho Birds (10) sells well. The pattern is featured on borders, certificates, temporary tattoos, plan books and more. “Impulse items that sell well are the Sharpie Minis (11), which are attached to a keychain. We have them in all different colors, and their low price point makes them popular among kids for back to school.”

BAT members refuse to accept assessments, tests and evaluations created and imposed by corporate driven entities that have contempt for authentic teaching and learning.” Among the group’s goals are “to reduce or eliminate the use of high stakes testing, increase teacher autonomy in the classroom and work to include teacher and family voices in legislative decision-making processes that affect students.” To accomplish those goals, BAT will conduct telephone calls, e-mails and letter-writing campaigns. Everyone’s Talking about the Baddass Teacher Association In early July, after the meeting of the National Teachers Association in Atlanta, blogs were buzzing about a new organization, the Badass Teacher Association. The group formed in June, and within just a few weeks had more than 22,000 members. It was founded by Mark Naison, a professor at Fordham University; parent activist Priscilla Sanstead; and New York teacher Marla Kilfoyle. Naison writes: “Badass Teachers Association was created to give voice to every teacher who refuses to be blamed for the failure of our society to erase poverty and inequality

Financial Education Needs a Makeover “Financial literacy” is being neglected in high schools, according to a study from the Center for Financial Literacy at Champlain College. Using national data, the center recently graded all 50 states on their efforts to produce financially literate high school graduates. Only seven states received an “A” for their literacy programs, compared to 22 that received a “D” or “F,” according to The Washington Post. “We would not allow a young person to get in the driver’s seat of a car without requiring a driver’s education,” reads the introduction to the study, “and yet we allow our youth to enter the complex financial world often without any related education. An uneducated individual armed with a credit card, a student loan and access to a mortgage can be nearly as dangerous to themselves and their community as a person with no training behind the wheel of a car.” Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia all received an “A.” Those states mandate that students are assessed as part of a required personal finance course, or on personal finance topics taught as part of another mandatory course. “B” was given to states that require personal finance be taught as part of another course, but with no assessment. If the study of personal finance was not required for graduation, the state received a “D.” “F” was awarded when there were too few requirements on the topic. “Too many financial literacy programs waste time on impractical or outdated financial instruments, such as paper tax forms, bank reconciliations and handmade budgets,” writes Joe Duran from Moneythink, a financial education and entrepreneurship training company. In a Huffington Post article, Duran points out that 90 percent of Americans use professionals or computer software to complete their taxes, 13 percent balance their

Certificate or College Degree? Thanks to the growing price of college and the declining prospects for folks who have a high-school diploma only, more people are considering certification rather than a degree. In fact, certificate programs – in fields that range from cosmetology to aircraft mechanics – are the fastestgrowing segment of higher education, “drawing younger and older students alike,” says an article in The Wall Street Journal. “From 2001 to 2011, the number of certificates of one year or less awarded by public community colleges more than doubled to about 249,000 from about 106,000 according to the American Association of Community Colleges,” it says. Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce reports that certificates cost $6,780 on average for one year at a public community college, and $19,635 at a forprofit college. The downside of certificates, however, is credibility. “Programs that are too short can leave students paying for a dead-end piece of paper; too specific, and the industry might not need the skill set; too general, and the earning potential may plateau,” says the article. The upside is that certificates are motivating more people to pursue higher education, and helping many find success in a career. At Harper College in Chicago, reports WSJ, more than 80 percent of people who earned certificates in 2012 have jobs, and approximately 50 percent of them are working in their chosen track. 28 EducationalDealerMagazine.com — September 2013
“I look at one-year certificates as a gateway to a career,” said the college’s President, Ken Ender. “They absolutely need to be augmented by more training and more credentials. But it is a gateway that makes sense for lots of people.”
The Importance of Spatial Skills “A gift for spatial reasoning may be a greater predictor of future creativity or innovation than math or verbal skills, particularly in math, science, and related fields,” reads an article from The New York Times. It refers to a recent study conducted by the journal Psychological Science which suggests that standardized tests should focus more on spatial ability. Researchers from Vanderbilt University examined the professional success of two groups of people: those who scored in the top 0.5 percent on the SAT 30 years ago when they were 13, and students who had taken the Differential Aptitude Test at the same time. The DAT measures spatial skills, or “the ability to visualize and manipulate two and three-dimensional objects.” Children who did well on the SAT were high achievers in adulthood, but those who did well on the spatial relations test had an even higher correlation with success. This study indicates that highperformance science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is not just related to math ability. It also means that students with high spatial reasoning abilities probably receive little guidance in school and underachieve as a result. “Evidence has been mounting over several decades that spatial ability gives us something that we don’t capture with traditional measures used in educational selection,” said David Lubinski, a psychologist at Vanderbilt and lead author of the study. “We could be losing some modern-day Edisons and Fords,” he told the Times. Teachers Get
Morewith I
Today’s Décor by Tina Manzer
In the early 1970s, when I was a little girl who liked to draw, I had a job creating bulletin board decorations every summer for my mother’s fourth-grade classroom. One of her long walls was cork almost floor to ceiling, so preparing for back-to-school took me a long time. Charlie Brown and Snoopy were everyone’s favorite characters then. “Peanuts” remained our theme for many years. I don’t think bulletin board sets had appeared on the scene yet. If they had, the teachers in Romulus, New York, didn’t know about them or couldn’t afford them. So every July, my mom would hand me rolls of butcher paper and markers, and nag me until I got drawing. She paid me $3. Teachers today may have to fork over a little bit more for bulletin board decorations, but compared to what my mother had to settle for, they get way more: great colors and likenesses, rugged long-lasting materials for repeated use, a variety of scenes, and instant gratification – they can walk into a store and walk out with readyto-go décor! Best of all, there is a slew of licensed characters to choose from, including my old friends from “Peanuts” and another personal favorite, Dr. Seuss. “Teachers used to be able to create a lot of their own products, but now they are as time crunched as everyone else,” notes Rebecca Rogers-Kreig, marketing and sales manager for the school division of Eureka/Paper Magic. “Plus, where teachers used to look for single items, now they are looking for total solutions and much more sophisticated designs.” Her company has been an innovator in those “solutions” and designs since 1986. It holds licensing rights to both “Peanuts” and Dr. Seuss, and many other popular themes including Suzy’s Zoo, HASBRO games, professional and college sports teams, and more. “They continue to be our strongest and best sellers, but over the last year we have introduced very focused, colorful and updated themes including sports, fish and super heroes,” said Rogers-Kreig in a recent interview. “The art is more modern and stylized with comic book and silhouette looks, and computer-generated images. They resonate with this generation of students and, probably more important, this generation of teachers.” The gold star originator Back in 1974, The Eureka Specialty Print Company of Scranton, Pennsylvania, produced, among other things, Christmas Seals – stamps sold during the holidays to raise funds for charitable causes – and gummed “Gold Star” stickers. The company was purchased that year by what later became known as the Paper Magic Group, and grew by adding other decorated seals and seasonal décor to its product offerings. “After 60-plus years we have held pretty steady to that mix of décor, stickers, rewards and incentives,” Rogers-Kreig tells us. “In more recent years we have added manipulatives and practice products. “Eureka is focused on bringing characters and design to decorative and learning products that help teachers and students connect, and make learning fun and impactful,” she elaborates. “If our products can catch a student’s attention with great design, and it helps the teacher convey the message (continued on page 36)

The face-to-face interactions and feedback we receive is so valuable when we determine how we go to market with our products. “With our extensive and supportive sales rep organization, we are able to play a part in vendor days, training seminars and regional trade shows,” she explained, when we asked about her company’s outreach. “We do special projects that help store owners understand our products better, and offer tips on how to upsell them. We provide photo ops for store openings and more.” The company’s most recent initiative is providing retailers with digital images of its products’ themes. With the help of a flat-screen TV, stores can display the images to showcase much more than what retailers can fit on a wall. My mother just wouldn’t believe it.

400 W Knowlton Rd Media, PA 19063 610-364-3200 Fax: 610-364-3201 skyboarderaser.com In 1955, Oliver Odhner began development of an eraser that would clean blackboards and leave no haze. You did not have to clean/wash the chalkboard at the end of the day because the Sky Board Eraser kept it clean with every use. It worked just as well on whiteboards. Recently, the manufacturing of the Sky Board Eraser was moved to a modern building with production handled by Maguire Products, a major manufacturer of equipment for the plastic industry. Modern production, offices and services will allow us to initially double our previous capacity.
