Contributors 08 Esther Austin Welcome to the 6th edition of National Nubian News and can I take this opportunity to thank you all for the support you have shown to date. Since September 2010, my team and I have been beavering away in our various locations, working on bringing you informative information. In this issue, we have extended our reach by incorporating news from the Diaspora in the African and European regions. We also will be featuring more positive stories which we hope will inspire others to achieve their goals, even when faced with constant hurdles. With our continued efforts to establish a tangible infrastructure of communication, we are looking for a number of individuals who can help us grow into a reputable network. We would welcome help from those who have experience in creating websites, we are also looking for reporters from all areas and individuals who have experience in fundraising. Wise Women Awards

The bible makes it clear that women who fear God are to be praised, and there’s no doubt that there are many women within the Christian community and beyond who are making strides within their chosen ministries and business endeavours, who fail to get the acknowledgment and respect they deserve for the work that they do. With this fact in mind, Wisdom for Women International has joined forces with Keep The Faith magazine to hold the 7th Wise Women Awards to give honour to and recognise the contribution and achievements of women who, as stated in Proverbs 31, ‘fear the Lord’. GAINS FROM GAMBIA The Gambia is an investor’s paradise with all the key business requirements: a stable peaceful country, a booming economy based on a liberated business environment with zero red tape and untapped opportunities in many sectors of the economy; all key requisites for any budding business. The business registration and start-up process is streamlined and by nature fast tracked to avoid lengthy delays in getting your enterprise off the ground. For over three decades, our beautiful country The Gambia has played host to well in excess of two million tourists from all over the world. I am glad to say the vast majority of our guests have revisited the smiling coast several times and made lifetime friends amongst our people. A substantial number have relocated to The Gambia and a lot of visitors have been so impressed that they have returned to invest in The Gambian tourism sector. The Gambia remains an unspoilt tropical paradise despite the development that has been happening. We have carefully blended our modern tourism infrastructure with our national and traditional resources to create a unique tourism product not found in many places in the world. The tourism sector is still in its infancy with room for expansion and innovation. There is scope for investments in exclusive accommodation, exquisite lodges and leisure centres, as well as operate river cruise boats. The river Gambia is one of the most navigable waterways in Africa and it offers great opportunities for sport fishing and cruising. your investment in the shortest possible time. We therefore invite potential investors to come and see what we have on offer. You will always fine The Gambian people with their spontaneous smile, most friendly and helpful. The two most important factors that determine where foreign investors put their money are a stable political climate, which is a prerequisite for any business activity, and a functioning and vibrant economy which makes it possible to earn returns on any investment. Both these factors, and many more conducive and reassuring elements, are what The Gambia has to offer all investors both foreign and local. The Gambia has for more than three decades existed as an oasis of peace in the sub-region. In addition to its pleasant sub-tropical weather, the country offers a peaceful political climate firmly pegged on a multiparty system of Government, the rule of law and an independent judiciary. A thriving economy operating on sound free market and international financial principles together with an attractive incentive regime, have created numerous opportunities for investment. A unique sense of hospitality and openness among the local people provides a natural reassurance to the foreign investor. The guide is specially designed to highlight the enormous investment opportunities that exist in the tourism industry. Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Gambian economy and since all the pointers show further growth, it is necessary to guide the investors who are bound to come.

National Nubian News NNN

On the 18th of January 1981, a fire started in house party in New Cross Road, South East London which would eventually claim 14 lives. Widely thought to have been a racially motivated attack, the testimony of many of the survivors and more recent advances in forensic technology have suggested otherwise, but the impact at the time and the nature of the police, political and media reaction, regardless of the cause, were to create a deep and to my mind a still unhealed rift between the community and the powers that be. There was a huge outcry at the disinterested police response and the lack of any reaction from the UK Government, which led to a massive public demonstration. Thirty years on, a Blue plaque was unveiled in a ceremony on the site. The poem which follows formed part of this ceremony.

Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council Presents Business Seminars to Boost Local Enterprises With many businesses (large and small) struggling to secure the funding that they need to expand, Sandwell MBC have organised a series of commercial finance and business seminars with expert and seasoned guest speakers:

New X By Mark ‘Mr T’ Thompson The skyline’s changed, but you know I wonder How much has changed for those living under SE14’s ash-grey January clouds, Once swelled by a black plume as charred as hate And shrouded further still by a police response inappropriate and late?

It was supposed to be a night of great celebration, Not one to create a date of shame for a city and a nation. 14 passed over, many feel as the result of one bigot’s action, 30 years have passed since seems we will get no satisfaction Or justice for the potential that was stolen by fire on a cold winters night, Let’s hope any perpetrator is not hidden from Karma’s ire and all seeing light. You may ask “What was the reaction from the voices of the establishment?” Well, with indifferent apathy ‘our government’ Let it pass without acknowledgement. Despite the size and the gravity of this tragedy We saw no timely messages of goodwill or sympathy Let alone a visit from a significant dignitary. But, although with Babylon’s old bill Many in this locality and nationally were still so obviously angry Despite the headlines to the contrary, Twenty thousand plus of us went up and demonstrated peacefully. Those who lost their lives here, had galvanised a community – together. Although many scars even now, are carried inside, Memories of this, with pride, we shall pass down forever. Sure the skyline has changed but you know I do wonder, Just how much has changed for those living under SE14’s ash-grey January clouds, Which were once swelled by a black plume as charred as hate, And shrouded further still by a police response, as inappropriate as it was late?

Nigeria to partner with Brazil in tackling its ailing power sector Nigeria has expressed its readiness to partner with Brazil and the private sector to develop hydro-power projects to address its energy problems. Nigeria’s Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who was visiting Brazil, said “Nigeria and Brazil had established an energy commission aimed at addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges”. “As you know, we also have this Nigeria-Brazil Energy Commission and that we will be looking forward to possible meeting with organs that are already planning to discuss the development of the Mambilla Hydro-power and other hydro-power projects in Nigeria as well as the development of the gas sector. According to him, a special adviser on energy had been appointed by the Nigerian government to specifically handle the issue of power. He said a delegation of Nigerians, selected from the office of the Special Adviser on Energy at the Ministry of Power, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Presidency, would be meeting with the Brazilian authorities to discuss the way forward for the Nigerian power sector. “Power is our major priority, although our stage is that we are still at the level of planning to have adequate power generation, which here in Brazil you have already gone beyond,” he said. He noted the achievements of the Brazilian government in the area of self-sufficiency in energy generation. “You already have your energy, the major thing is to be able to distribute it to the less privileged, the areas that could not get this energy, which is slightly over 10 million people,” Sambo added. He, however, expressed optimism that with the huge investment being made by Nigeria in the energy sector, the country would soon record an appreciable level of energy generation and distribution for speedy socioeconomic transformation of its economy. Speaking earlier, the coordinator of the ‘Light for All’ programme in Brazil, Mr Paulo Cerqueira, said that less than 10 percent of Brazil’s population of 191 million was without steady electricity supply. He said that with the introduction of the ‘Light for All’ programme, more than 125,000 families had returned to the rural areas, 391,000 people were gainfully employed and 2.4 million families enjoyed improved quality of life. Cerqueira said that Brazilians could not remember the last time they experienced interruption in electricity supply.

conference on ICTsupported learning Nairobi, Kenya. eLearning Africa has launched the Scholarship Trust EAST, a not for profit organisation designed to enhance knowledge sharing and to promote awareness of the benefits of technology-assisted learning and training across Africa. eLearning Africa is the largest pan-African conference on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for Development, Education and Training. EAST builds on the previous eLearning Africa bursary programme. It offers scholarships to lowincome, disadvantaged education professionals to help them take advantage of the networks, resources and conferences of eLearning Africa. Participation in Africa’s premier eLearning event will ensure that educators, practitioners and researchers across the continent become part of the innovation process, enabling them to pass on useful knowledge to their own communities. “eLearning Africa gave me the much appreciated opportunity to network and to disseminate the information I had gathered, allowing me to gauge our development against regional and international parameters,” said Karen Ferreira-Meyers from the University of Swaziland, who participated in eLearning Africa in Lusaka in May 2010 through a bursary programme. “With one of the largest populations of young people in the world, education is at the heart of Africa’s future. eLearning and access to information are vital,” says Rebecca Stromeyer, eLearning Africa organiser and founder of the EAST organisation. “EAST will help to raise awareness of the benefits of technology-enhanced learning on the continent and contribute to the development of new initiatives.” “History has it that eLearning Africa has been a success,” says Charles Senkondo, Executive Director of the Tanzania Global Development Learning Centre (TGDLN), who is involved in organising eLearing Africa 2011 in Tanzania. “Since its inception in 2006, the conference has constantly built up and linked a worldwide network of decision-makers from governments and administrations with education practitioners from public and private education institutions, industry and important partners in development cooperation. It is this unique community of practice which enables us to spread the benefits of ICT-enhanced education across the African continent.” EAST seeks the assistance and partnership of like-minded foundations, corporations and international organisations for the following programmes: The Practitioners Scholarship Programme, The Expert Scholarship Programme, The Mentorship Programme and The Africa eContent Awards. The comparison was not lost on me. Many youth who join gangs refer to themselves as ‘soldiers’. Those involved in gangs in Jamaica or Sierra Leone or others countries where there is profound poverty and political instability, are sometimes genuine paid up members of the military. Gang membership can literally save lives, when favours are traded in blood. But, in non life-threatening situations why are so many UK youth still signing up to gangland culture? There’s already been acres written about this and days of debate have raged and sadly, tears continue to be shed at the loss of young lives. Potential and promise snuffed out. On a reflective day, whatever lure of the gang is to the impressionable mind, I think ‘Gangsline’ is a force for good, especially if in small baby steps, the mindset of gang culture begins the process of deconstruction. http://www.facebook.com/pages/ Gangsline/155239217850509 ‘In a gang… want to leave but can’t call gangsline free on 0800 032 9538 where advisors are waiting to help!!’ Background Information: Gangsline is a confidential telephone helpline service totally dedicated to supporting gang members, victims of gang violence, communities and families whose lives have been affected by gang culture. The helpline is manned by trained volunteer counsellors who specialise in gang culture and its effects. It offers practical advice and support. Gangsline is part of the Helping Hand Trust.

BEING POSITIVE

WHAT’S IT REALLY ALL ABOUT?

Esther Austin The acquisition and striving towards the art of being positive seems to be something that is liberally and casually verbalised in the grandest scheme of attaining a sense of purity. “Hail the white halo cometh to sit upon thine head oh one of positivity”. Everyone wants to be positive. It’s become a bit of a buzz word. You hear comments thrown casually to the wind ‘I’m positive. It really is about being positive. I’m always positive.” Hmmmmm….isn’t this when alarm bells start to ring and the big troll comes out of his tower to wag his big finger at you, shaking his head – or would that be Jiminy Cricket from the animation Pinocchio, who becomes your own personal conscience telling you that somewhere along the line, this whole idea of constantly being positive is not quite how it works? The idea of being positive to many people seems to be about always looking externally on the ball, in touch with the self. To always be in an upbeat mood, smiling from ear to ear regardless of what dramas prevail or challenges present themselves. Being positive is having that sense of ‘here I am’ even when the sun has gone to sleep and the thunder is roaring and the raining is running down the back of your neck and you want to let off steam, but you have to

8

hold it together because you are ‘positive’. Positive is smiling in the face of danger and turning the other cheek, and then the other cheek when life ticks you off so much that a mere mortal would scream abuse or throw a punch. Being positive is having that attitude that nothing bothers me, still with THAT smile adorned on your face as if it was set in stone. Yet often times, behind closed doors and when the world is not privy to looking into the windows of your soul and when your smile disappears and all that positivity is drowned in a flood of tears and a sadness sweeps over your heart like a flood, then the truth about trying to remain and sustain this ‘positive stance’ surfaces like a sore. Life is not about being positive and pretending that it is one hunkey dorey ride into the sunset of forever skipping on a road paved with gold. Don’t forget the cracks in between the pavements. Now don’t get me wrong, being positive is a good start, a very good start. The platform upon which we can build many of the other and sometimes more important attributes that mould us into more rounded individuals. To be self-aware is one of those attributes. Being positive can become a dangerous catch phrase or slogan to keep the world at bay and to also to keep the reality of what is really going on inside of us, tucked away. Yet on occasion one must question, what happens to emotions that may arise i.e fear, sadness, loneliness, frustration and even anger? Where do we hide them whilst still convincing ourselves that ‘we are positive?’ Being self-aware, having a level of consciousness of where we are at any one moment in time is more crucial than being positive adding to that having an attitude of gratitude. I feel that positivity therefore builds from these places. Being present to this very moment is one of the best antidotes to enhance and enrich being positive and the key point here is that it keeps life real. Remember there is darkness and light, the ying and the yang, hot and cold. Everything has an opposite which therefore sustains balance.

NNN News February 2011 • nationalnubiannews@yahoo.com

Being self-aware empowers us to realise that at times as ‘positive’ as we may want to feel, or behave or be, sometimes we just don’t feel in that place and you know what, it’s ok. Take for example a see-saw. The extremes of being on a see-saw is that one minute you can be sitting on top of the world, looking over at an expanse of real time and the next you could be sitting at the very base of the earth itself, looking up. In a split second you have experienced an extreme of two polars. Now bring the see saw more into alignment where you have a balance of two people sitting at each end, with very gentle movements and you get a nice balance. This is the way life works. If you operate too much at one end of the spectrum, then the only other way to balance that out would be to experience the other extreme end of the spectrum. Yet if you take things easy and be more mindful of the space in between the two extremes you then afford to strike a balance. Being ‘positive’ all the time has the danger of denying us from experiencing the true realities of life. It is more about having a certain mindset to identify how you are feeling at any given moment in time and allowing yourself to experience and acknowledge the feeling and emotion and then having the awareness to then do something about it if you so choose. By denying how we feel at any given moment is to deny a huge part of our personal growth. We all need to experience and understand everything that life throws at us, as much as we can and in that vein this therefore allows us to make more informed choices and decisions about our lives and more importantly we get to know who we are better and how we operate. So next time you blurt out how positive you are, take a moment and have a think about what you are really saying. Go easy on yourself. If you have what you might classify as an ‘off day’ its ok, it really is. You just got to remember that you don’t need to stay there and when you make a decision like this that is when you are being positive, because of your awareness of self.

Telecel Zimbabwe launches mobile

Africa only region with air travel growth in November: IATA

wallet service Telecel have launched a service which enables customers to use their phones as a mobile wallet. The move means subscribers can open virtual banking accounts without the need to provide payslips or proof of earnings. This can be done at minimal cost compared to opening a conventional bank account. This new service in Zimbabwe allows customers to withdraw or deposit money at local partner stores, using their mobile phone as a means of recording transactions. Anywhere there is a bank, supermarket, store or post office that is a partner of Telecel, subscribers will be able to make use of the service.

African carriers were the only region to show an increase in growth rates from October (12.6%) to November (16.4%), according to the International Air Transport Association. The region’s carriers moved 11% more travellers in November than they did at the pre-recession peak in early 2008.

“With this service, your bank is your phone. It goes with you wherever you go” a Telecel spokesperson said.

The association report also revealed that international air travel level was now 4% above the prerecession peak of early 2008. It said all regions, except Africa, reported a slowing in year-on-year growth rates from October to November.

In addition to instant money transactions, customers will also be able to transfer and send money, purchase shopping online or make balance enquiries from wherever they are.

In freight demand, IATA said November’s year-on-year growth of 5.4% showed a significant shift from the 14.5% recorded in October. This, it said, was exaggerated by the exceptionally strong performance in November 2009.

Telecel claim that the service will benefit those in remote areas the most, as they will no longer need to travel to the city for their banking requirements. Subscribers will also receive confirmations of transactions by text message. “There will be no need for people in rural areas to travel to the city or growth point to withdraw money. Once they have received an SMS confirmation that money has been deposited into their virtual account, they can visit the nearest farmer, supermarket, post office or non-governmental organisation that is in partnership with Telecel to collect their cash,” the spokesperson said.

In absolute terms, the association said there was a 1.1% fall in freight volumes from October to November with all regions, bar Africa, showing dramatic drops in year-on-year growth rates from October to November. IATA however said the slower growth did not necessarily signal a negative trend. It pointed out that even with the decline in November, passenger and freight traffic were still expanding at annualised rates of between 5-6% which was in line with the industry’s historical growth trend. Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO, said: “The industry is shifting gears in the recovery cycle. Growth is slowing towards normal historical levels in the 5-6% range. Relative weakness in developed markets is being offset by the momentum of economic expansion in developing markets.” “We see a strong end to 2010 that boosted the year’s profit forecast to $15.1 billion. Slowing traffic growth is in line with our projections for a reduced profit of $9.1 billion in 2011. That’s a 1.5% margin. More hard work will be needed in the New Year to achieve sustainable levels of profitability.”

Gianpietro Bordignon, WFP Egypt Representative and Country Director “Research has demonstrated that the right food at the right time, especially in early childhood, ensures good development and has a long reach into early and later years. “In fact, kindergarten age is a prime time to invest in the mental and physical development of children. The snack distributed is fortified with all the necessary vitamins and iron, addressing around 25 percent of the child’s nutritional daily needs,” he added.

retention of children in kindergarten classes. Mohammed Kafafi,Vice Chairman and CEO, Banque Du Caire, said the project would contribute to the well-being and health of very young children, while encouraging them to go to school at an early age. “We are very proud to be the first bank in Egypt to respond and contribute to this noble and great cause,” he said. Recently, Egypt’s Minister of International Cooperation, Fayza Aboul Naga, a strong advocate of school meals, had requested WFP to assist the Egyptian Government in the design of a new public-private partnership to enhance school feeding activities nationwide. She also suggested banking sector leaders could pioneer this new initiative. The project supports the Government’s efforts to improve the quality of education by 2015, in line with the international targets laid out in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. Each year, on average, WFP feeds more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries.

The project is also expected to encourage enrolment, attendance and

600,000 public sector job loss – that was the headline I read on the BBC online news site in June 2010. I have friends and family who work with and for the public sector and everyone is worried. I am not surprised because a public sector job is a wonderful relationship to be in.You are totally looked after, all your training needs are met and just about everything you want to attend outside of work can be added to your public spending expenses for your department. When you find yourself in a relationship where everything is taken care of how do you manage your life when the relationship ends? One of the biggest things that public sector employees are going to have to learn how to manage is their professional and personal development. Many people use redundancy as a time to launch their own business and they jump in with both feet without really planning or thinking through what it is they want to do. For many, they have no idea what they want to do, being forced to leave a job through redundancy after 20 or more years can be a heart breaking ordeal and for people in their late 40s and early 50s the job market is more cruel than it is kind. These 600,00 public sector job losses are to happen over 6 years – which gives people plenty of time to get ready in the unfortunate event of their job being part of those that are “lost” – but how many will have the foresight to plan ahead and think about their next move? Being made redundant can be something to fear or something to plan for and look forward to because with most things in life we have choices. If you work for the public sector I want to urge you to begin thinking now about your future. Hopefully there will be schemes set up to help people through the transition because the public sector is great for supporting its staff in that way, but don’t wait for that. It is time to re-learn self reliance and put your future in your own (and Gods) hands. Start thinking about other options and what’s available to you, don’t wait for life to dictate what happens next, take some steps towards making it happen, open up to what your intentions will be for yourself over the next 12-24 months. Allow some space for the miraculous to happen – amazing synchronicities happen when you set intentions for your life.

The Battle for Barking First Floor the Malthouse Studios 62-76 Abbey Road Barking IG117BT Filmed, directed and produced by Laura Fairrie, The Battle for Barking records a historic moment in British political history through the microcosm of one constituency. As it charts the rise and fall of the BNP, it also gives an extraordinary insight into the workings of the “BNP family”, and into the working class disillusionment with Labour that fuelled their campaign. The film is an honest, moving and humorous portrait of the people of Barking – and shows why, even as a troubled and divided community, they still chose to say “no” to the BNP.

Music on the night will be supplied by Phonix Sound, EJ tha DJ outta Jamrockradio.com plus a VERY special guest selector to be confirmed.

Enrico Miguel Thomas meets Esther Austin

Once in a while a story hits our news stands reaffirming to us the tenacity and strength of the human soul. Stories which serve to remind us of the huge potential, we as human beings have to conquer and rise above what is often insurmountable challenges. As spiritual beings living a physical experience, these challenges serve and test our spiritual growth. How we deal with life’s challenges often mould us into who we become. Dr Wayne Dyer once said something along the lines of “When we change the way we look at things, things around us change.” Enrico Thomas, one of New York’s best emerging artists, is one such incredible human being who has triumphed. Art literally saved his life. His biological father was very abusive and when Enrico was only three years old he scalded him with boiling water disfiguring his face and leaving him in a coma. At the age of eight as an escape, Enrico began drawing. He then ran away from home as a teenager to live in a shelter. He later earned a scholarship to the Pratt Institute. Enrico fought his way back from an existence which almost destroyed him and is now successfully known as “The Subway Artist of New York”. Enrico uses the actual New York City Subway map as his drawing paper, resulting in a most interesting collaboration of his signature architectural style with the abstract quality of the subway map. Esther: Enrico you have an incredible story to share with the world. What has made you the person you are today? Enrico: There is an African proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child.” So many people have helped me along my journey and have shown me love. The love and patience of all these people, such as mentors, counsellors, friends, etc broke through the darkness of my early life and helped me to love and accept myself just the way I am. Esther:What is art to you, what does it do to your soul and where does your inspiration come from? Enrico: Art is a force that comes from a higher source. It uses our bodies and minds to channel the beauty that is all around, below, and above us. Art takes me away from the gravity of the world and allows me to soar above earthly problems. It helps me forget my problems. I think we are all good at something and if we open ourselves up to receive the gifts that the universe gives to us so freely and unconditionally, there is nothing that can limit us. Beauty is all around us and it is this omnipotent beauty that inspires me to create the beautiful subway and architectural

drawings that I am known for. If we open our eyes we can see much more than we think we can. Esther:Who do you become when you are absorbed in your work and how does your work make you feel? Enrico: When I do my work I become an artist first and foremost. I lose the identity of being a survivor of horrendous child battery and this is why doing my work is so important to me. I create a new identity as a proud artist. When I finish my drawings and paintings I feel so proud of myself and my spirit is elevated in an indescribable way. I guess I feel like Gene Kelly when he’s dancing and singing in the rain. Esther:You have triumphed over many adversities. What kept you going when the going got tough and the tough got going? Enrico: What has kept me going through all the adversities and challenges in my life is a fundamental instinct within to stay alive. To choose life over death. I have definitely felt the ‘breath of death’ on my face especially when I was in a coma at age three. I think that is why I choose the hardest materials to work with (sharpies and extremely fragile subway maps) and have worked in the most terrible conditions (windy and unsanitary subway platforms and thirty degree weather). There is something about being on the brink of death that motivates the human soul to do things it never imagined possible. Esther:Working on the underground you must meet the most amazing and eclectic group of people, how has this underground network influenced your life and work? Enrico: One of the most fundamental lessons everyone is trying to learn on this earth plane is that we are all connected. It is so easy to believe otherwise but when I draw and paint, I meet so many interesting people through my work. People from different countries of all nationalities as well as local people. They encourage me and tell me that my drawings are good which gives me encouragement. I’ve always said and will continue to say that my favourite audience are the little children. It makes me so happy to know that I have inspired them when they ask me questions about art. I tell them that it won’t always be easy to be an artist but when you keep going even when you are tired and keep drawing anyway, it is these moments that will make the most difference in your life.

“A Plaque is Not Enough” Plaques around London usually commemorate the lives of somebody important. But the tribute here, marks the lost potential of fourteen young people in an inferno. Is this enough? Marie-Eloise Hurley reports for NNN.

“When I was first involved with the New Cross Fire Families no one wanted to mark the site of the fire as it was just too painful. 30 years on I’m glad it has been possible to erect the blue plaque. Now everyone who passes will have the chance to remember the tragic events and future generations will have a catalyst to understanding history and the struggle for justice and overcoming racism”. “It is a fitting tribute to the 14 young black people who died”, insisted Joan Ruddock MP. It reinforces less satisfactory symbolism about the tragedy in Lewisham such as floral tributes in Lewisham Town Hall and Nicola Hopwood’s stained glass window. The fire broke out during a birthday party in the early hours of the morning at 439 New Cross Road on January 18, 1981. In total, 13 young people were killed, with another victim taking his own life 18 months later. Police indifference about the loss of African Caribbean life thirty years ago, translated to a bungled initial inquest into the cause of the fire. Community relations were already strained. The people’s day of action saw 22,000 people march from Fordham Park, Deptford to Hyde Park in the greatest demonstration of its kind the country had seen. Britain soon erupted in a sea of protests, made famous with the Brixton Riots in 1981. Up to three hundred people listened to survivors, grieving relatives, the Mayor of Lewisham, and spokespersons for the Metropolitan police and London fire brigade witnessed the unveiling of the plaque, thirty years on. An invited party then gathered for a reception at Goldsmiths College to witness two Lewisham school pupils pick up bursary

cheques of £11,365 each to study at the university, in living remembrance of the tragedy. Speaking at the plaque unveiling, George Francis, Chair of the New Cross Parents Committee, Sandra Ruddock, and Jenny Berbeck invigorated the cold porch of No. 439 with their heated reflections. Jak Beula, Chair of the Nubian Jak Community Trust said: “The New Cross Fire Plaque, coming on the 30th anniversary of the tragedy, is a timely reminder of the resilience shown by the families and a community who lost so many young lives who did not get the chance to fulfil their potential. It is hoped that the plaque will serve as a permanent reminder to the world that they will never be forgotten”. Organiser, Jak Beula, played a master of ceremonies role, which involved mediating between angry cries of racist allegations dating back to the first Metropolitan police inquest into the murder. George Francis – Spokesperson on behalf of the New Cross Fire Families said: “On behalf of the all the families, I am happy to acknowledge the plaque which is being placed on the house, and pleased that it will serve as a memorial of what happened to our loved ones back in 1981”. Joan Ruddock MP for Lewisham and Islington North said:

“After the fire, I have learnt to live life fully”.

“It’s impossible to fill in the forensic gaps left by the first police enquiry into the New Cross Fire. However, eventually, in response to complaints, the police took their subsequent inquest to the high courts. Some of the evidence missed in the first enquiry will never be redeemed’’.

“Lots of organisations have jumped on the bandwagon of our suffering and received support. But thirty years on, survivors haven’t event received counselling”.

“I saw how the Deputy Coroner provided every forensic facility and courtesy to the families when the case was reopened in 2004. The families would have preferred a verdict of unlawful killing, However, the quality of the evidence from some of the witnesses and the fact that some witnesses made themselves unavailable, left no other verdict possible or reasonable”, reflects retired Chief Inspector of Police, David Michael. Michael supported families of the New Cross Fire victims at the 2nd inquest into the fire and says, “Even as a strong friend of the Family Campaign, I could see that it would become an open verdict”. Since 1981 much has changed. The fire contributed to anti-racism protests around the country, notably in Brixton that April. This led to change and the rise of local services. Survivor, Wayne Haynes, asked later that evening, “What about the 56 of us who live? We have never even had counselling and many cannot move on”. “Many of us have suffered in silence for years; others can’t sleep trying to cope with the physical pain and mental trauma that resulted from this tragedy”, continues Haynes, who suffered fractures his pelvis in 157 places and recalls the feeling when his skin dripped away like sweat in the blaze. Mr Haynes continued: “Although the fire itself was not a racist attack, everything else that went along with the fire was racist, the enquiry; the whole thing, the way they treated the kids, the parents - it was all racist after that, the fire wasn’t racist but we need justice and it starts from here.” “I still can’t walk properly, I’m on crutches and still have treatment. I was seventeen years old and playing semi-professional football when I was caught in the fire. I’ll never be the same again”. “A blue plaque is not good enough”, argues Haynes “The plaque doesn’t close the door on the fourteen people who have died, or say anything at all for the 56 survivors”.

This year Mark Ali and Ahmed Patrick-Lalljee became the latest to benefit from the New Cross Bursary scheme. In total, ten have received cheques for £11,365 each to study at Goldsmiths College in remembrance of the New Cross Fire victims. It’s hoped the value of the award rises to cover the rise in fees to £27,000 over three years so its legacy lives on. Haynes reacts: “I have just been made aware of the New Cross Bursary and I commend Lewisham Council for supporting local young people in this way but what about the lives of survivors? I would like to see something personal like a trust for disabled young people being led by the New Cross Fire victims”. Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said: “The tragedy of the New Cross Fire must never be forgotten and at this time, we are remembering the loss of those young people and all the potential they would have offered our community. “The bursary scheme, the plaque at the site of the fire and the memorial service are all significant ways that will ensure we continue to remember.” “I think the bursary was important to the parents and meant the memory of their children lives on. It was also very moving to see their thoughts about their child, plus their blessing and positivity to the people who had gained the bursary”, says Manoj Kerai who attended the bursary event. There have been massive changes in the thirty years since the tragedy. Practical measures that make the loss far less likely today include the standardisation of flame-retardant furniture and rise of smoke alarms and fire escape drills for residential homes, fitted without charge by the London fire Brigade. Fire Fighter Micky Nicholas was the FBU member who spoke at the plaque unveiling as an official union rep explains: “We performed the guard of honour on the day. It is a fitting tribute to the fourteen who lost their lives in fire as it is a rare tribute usually reserved for our colleagues. We were showing real honour to the victims who perished here”. “It was important to us as black fire fighters that we performed the passing of arms ceremony outside to acknowledge the people who lost nationalnubiannews@yahoo.com

their lives in the fire at 439 New Cross Road”. Micky believes the sign is “absolutely fitting”. It shows “those who lost their lives are always in our hearts and minds”. This plaque hardly matches the wound of indifference that has burned the heart of our African Caribbean community. We will not be indifferent and neither should London at large.
