What is an OBGYN Hospitalist? An OBGYN Hospitalist (OBH) is a board certified OBGYN that works only in the hospital providing a number of functions. OBGYN hospitalist duties may include evaluating patients in OB triage or an OB Emergency Department, providing care for MFM patients, performing deliveries, instructing resident physicians, assisting with cesarean sections, providing consultation for Family Medicine physicians and midwives, and caring for high-risk patients transferred from birth centers or other less specialized maternal care centers. Emergency and high-risk events an OB/GYN encounters occasionally in their practice become regular events for the OB/GYN hospitalist who responds either to manage or assist all high-risk and emergent situations on L&D. A successful OBH program assures high-quality care, best practices and serves as a safety net for the unit. Each program is tailored to the program’s needs. Obstetric providers are highly appreciative of these programs, which provide high-quality and safe patient care. OBH programs demonstrate lower c-section rates and increased revenue generation. Programs have succeeded in minimizing adverse outcomes including sentinel events through a comprehensive safety program. An integral part of these programs is the ever-present OB hospitalist who helps support best practices and consultative guidelines, models effective communication and assists with education of other care providers.
