The National Sporting Library & Museum’s 6th Annual Polo Classic, to be held Sunday, September 11, 2016, will be both classy and memorable. It is an honor to chair this premier fundraiser for the National Sporting Library & Museum which celebrates its mission – preserving, promoting, and sharing the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports – and to be part of this world class event. For 2016, we are thrilled to hold the event, for the first time ever, at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia. Great Meadow is recognized as an important equestrian sporting center in the United States. Home to many events throughout its season, Great Meadow hosts the highly regarded International Gold Cup, and, later this year, will host the first ever Fédération Equestre Internationale Nations Cup Eventing competition held outside Europe. That event will be the final outing for the US Eventing Team before going to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. At this venue, we can expand the event and preserve the intimacy of viewing top-flight polo on the edge of the playing field. Two matches, each four-chukker affairs, will be played on the Sheila C. Johnson Grass Polo Field, set in truly gorgeous rolling Virginia countryside. Patrons will enjoy a fine, seated luncheon and superb viewing from the Founders’ Pavilion, and tailgaters will savor fieldside positions along the boards. The 6th Annual Polo Classic will share the rich equestrian legacy of the two organizations and burnish The Classic’s credentials in the world of polo. I hope you consider becoming a sponsor for such an elegant and worthy endeavor. Wishing you the very best, Juliana E. May Chair, NSLM 6th Annual Polo Classic

NSLM HISTORY, MEMBERSHIP, & COLLECTIONS
6th Annual PoloClassic Sunday, September 11, 2016
T
he National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and sharing the literature, art, and culture of equestrian, angling, and field sports. This mission has served to guide the NSLM since its foundation in 1954 by George L. Ohrstrom, Sr. and Alexander Mackay-Smith. A research Library and fine art Museum, the NSLM sits on an idyllic campus in Middleburg, Virginia. From this lovely spot in the heart of Virginia’s hunt country, the NSLM brings the tradition of turf and field sports to its members and visitors via compelling programs, events, and exhibitions. The mission of the NSLM is
supported through members who enjoy a rich program of benefits, in addition to keeping the history and culture of sporting pursuits alive for future generations. Member benefits include free admission to Museum exhibitions, invitations to NSLM events like exhibition openings and book
signings, lectures, and hands-on workshops, and a subscription to the NSLM quarterly newsletter. Special tours with staff give members an inside look at the Library’s unique collections, and the Museum’s loan exhibitions and permanent art collection.

SIDE-BY-SIDE
with Gun & Dog
Side-by-Side with Gun & Dog, on view September 25, 2015 March 20, 2016 at the NSLM, explores the quintessential relationship between gunning enthusiasts and gun dogs in eighteenth- through twentieth-century British, European, and American portraits and landscapes. This ambitious loan exhibition organized by the NSLM brings together over forty paintings and sculpture from public and private collections by such important artists as: Benjamin Marshall, Richard Ansdell, Thomas Hewes Hinckley, Charles Olivier de Penne, William Tylee Ranney, Arthur Burdett Frost, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, and Percival Rosseau.
Above: Benjamin Marshall (British, 1767-1835) Portrait of a Sportsman, Possibly Richard Prince, 1825/6, oil on canvas, 40 x 34 inches, Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection Right: George Haugh (British, 1777-1818) The Countess of Effingham with Gun and Shooting Dogs, 1787, oil on canvas 17 Âź x 15 inches, Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection
The works represent many changes over time. Among these differences are: nationalities, participants, dog breeds, conformation (the shape or structure of an animal), firearms technology, game laws, types of game, the landscape, and artistic styles. The exhibition explores these changes, but at the same time reinforces the foundation of the sport - the rapport between the human figure and the canine which remains a constant throughout.

T
he National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) will hold its 6th Annual Polo Classic at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia on Sunday, September 11, 2016. Great Meadow has been home to the renowned Virginia Gold Cup race since 1985 and has quickly developed into a world-class equestrian center; hosting the first Nations Cup of Eventing ever held in America. This summer, the Nations Cup event is the final outing of the Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team before competing at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 200-acre site is also host to steeplechasing, Twilight Polo, and many other equestrian and community activities. The grounds contain four ponds, an open air stadium, The Sheila C. Johnson Grass Polo Field, and space for public and private events and activities. Thirty years ago, news executive and philanthropist Arthur W. “Nick” Arundel stood in front of failed
Fleming Farm, then a bankrupt dairy farm, slated for sale. What he saw was more than a permanent home for The Virginia Gold Cup, which had recently lost its host site in Warrenton to subdivision development. He had a far larger vision. Arundel wanted to create a park dedicated to the preservation of open space and the potential to show others why that was so important. After purchasing the land, and garnering the support of like-minded friends, Arundel established the Great Meadow Foundation which owns and operates Great Meadow. He saw a stage on which Virginia’s finest resources could be showcased and a calendar full of events for all who embrace the great outdoors. It would begin with The Virginia Gold Cup and grow from there. To learn more about Great Meadow, visit GreatMeadow. org.
