WELCOME National Trust of Australia (NSW) This year we pay tribute to Journeys, whether they be individual stories of migration, walkabout, exploration, travel or community celebration of heritage and culture. They come together to showcase our diversity and reflect the stories of our multicultural society.

Thank you for joining the National Trust of Australia (NSW) on a journey through the regions of NSW. Now in its 34th year, The National Trust Heritage Festival is a celebration of the individuals and communities who have contributed to the makeup and definition of who we are as a nation.

The Trust celebrates heritage, history and the environment, and this festival mirrors our interest in and curiosity about our past and the passions of our members. The Trust’s own journey was started in New South Wales by Annie Wyatt in 1945. Devastated by the development rampages that were destroying native bushland and built heritage alike, Mrs Wyatt galvanised community support leading to a community venture which became the National Trust. In the early days the Trust saved cultural icons in Macquarie Street, while preventing the razing of suburbs including The Rocks, Glebe and Paddington. Later successes included saving the Queen Victoria Building, and the Maritime Services Building that now houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. Campaigns to protect all kinds of heritage at risk continue today, as does our commitment to raising awareness of the value of heritage through education.

The National Trust Heritage Festival is celebrated annually Australia-wide.

The Festival and our National Trust properties can trace their journeys in the development of Australia’s environmental and historical sensibility.

A highlight of the Festival is our annual National Trust Heritage Awards, recognised as a leading event in encouraging and rewarding excellence in heritage conservation and education.

We welcome Norfolk Island to this year’s celebration with events that tour the World Heritage listed Kingston & Arthur’s Vale Historic Area and the KAVHA Research Centre, enabling the public to discover their ancestors and early explorers of the area.

This year the festival will be exciting, enriching and engaging - I hope you will participate in and enjoy some of what we have on offer, including the Bushrangers in Majors Creek, Silent Film Festival, National Motoring Heritage Day, Sorry Day and Reconciliation week events, ICOMOS’s International Day of Monuments and Sites, and the start of the Centenary of Gallipoli events.

The National Trust gratefully acknowledges the support of The Heritage Branch of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage whose continued support since the Festival’s initiation has enabled it to flourish and to present some 2,500 events to over one million visitors over the years.

The Trust also thanks communities across NSW for their creativity and enthusiasm in supporting the longest running community festival in this state.

Anne Frank’s Diary is one of the 10 most read books in the world and has been translated into 70 languages since it was first published in 1947. The diary was the keeper of Anne’s thoughts while she was in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in 1942. The exhibition features over 200 images from the Frank family photo albums and quotations from the diary.

OPEN DAY - Visitors will be able to go aboard and look over this beautifully restored tall ship - the barque James Craig. She was launched in Sunderland UK in 1874. James Craig, is one of the finest 19th century working square riggers in the world today - having been rescued from her watery grave on Recherche Bay in Tasmania in 1973.

Since then hundreds of volunteers have spent thousands of working days in her superb restoration. Other ships in Sydney Heritage Fleet’s operational centenarians include the 1902 steam launch Lady Hopetoun, the 1902 steam tug Waratah, and many more. This wonderful ship needs to be seen to be believed.............. All Welcome!!

Balnaves Award-winner Jada Alberts has been a quiet, steady presence around the country for a good few years now – acting, writing, making. She is one of a growing group of young Indigenous artists who have looked to each other as much as they have to their elders, and her play emerges from the gathering voices of this new generation. Leah Purcell directs this very alert, very human play about how many other people it takes for each of us to live.

PERFORMANCE - Even today in the age of satellite navigation and advanced communication the voyages of Matthew Flinders would not be undertaken by the faint hearted. When Matthew Flinders arrived in Sydney the coastline was largely unexplored. In 1796 Flinders set about exploring the coastline firstly around Sydney in a tiny open boat called “Tom Thumb.” He followed this by circumnavigating Tasmania and charting the entire coastline of Australia. Paul Brunton, Senior Curator at the Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales will take us on a remarkable journey spanning the 20 year career of Matthew Flinders, navigator.

WORKSHOP - After the journey of Lawson, Blaxland and Wentworth over the Blue Mountains in 1813, Governor Macquarie recalled his trusted surveyor, George William Evans, from Tasmania to survey the new route and to explore and survey the plains beyond. This richly illustrated talk explores the strengths and weaknesses of Evans in the context of his career in Australia and evaluates the significance of his journey to the Bathurst Plains.

WANDERLUST: BILL BROWN

NEW WA UTH S O EXHIBITION - Bill Brown is one of the most respected figures in Australian visual arts. A precocious talent in the sixties and seventies, Brown achieved a sophistication, depth and distinctive voice until progressively retreating as an exhibiting artist in the 1980s. However, his reputation grew as an teacher whose influence as a mentor inspired a generation of younger artists. The exhibition celebrates his contribution in a career spanning over forty years. Works from public galleries and private collections will be presented in this first ever survey of his considerable oeuvre. The exhibition is supported by the NSW Government through Arts NSW.

EXHIBITION/DISPLAY - The Exhibition shows the conversion of the heritage buildings built in 1864 by Ebenezer Vickery to War Memorial Hospital up to today, 150 years later. Waverley Cemetery had its first funeral in 1877 and the exhibition follows the changes made. Lastly, the Exhibition features the Mary Immaculate Church in Victoria Street, Waverley. This Exhibition is held in conjunction with Waverley Council’s Heritage and Urban Design awards on display in the Library’s atrium gallery during April.

WALKING TOUR - Meeting at the Birrell Street entrance to War Memorial Hospital, the tour will explore the grounds and visit the Chapel and Vickery building. Built in 1864 by Ebenezer Vickery, the family home and other houses were offered as a gift for hospital purposes in 1919. The hospital role has changed from an Acute General and Obstetric Hospital to a Geriatric and Rehabilitation Hospital today.

GREEK SCHOLAR, SIR CHARLES NICHOLSON DAY AT LINDESAY

FESTIVAL - Celebration of Sir Charles Nicholson’s life at Lindesay. When Sydney University was founded in the 1850s Sir Charles Nicholson gave most of his large collection of Greek, Roman and Egyptian artefacts to the University, which then set up the Nicholson Museum. At 2pm there will be a lecture on Nicholson’s life and illustrations of some of the artefacts that he collected. A display of Greek dancing will follow and a Greek themed morning and afternoon tea will be available. Tours of the house will also be available from 11am.

WALKING TOUR - In 1785 Lapérouse was appointed by Louis XVI to lead a scientific expedition to rival the Pacific discoveries of James Cook. On the 26th January 1788 the expedition landed on the northern shore of Botany Bay. After 6 weeks on the La Perouse headland they left on the final stage of the journey back to France and were never sighted again. The Lapérouse Museum and monuments commemorate this epic journey. Join the Friends of the Lapérouse Museum for a walk and talk about the expedition followed by morning tea on the verandah of the historic Cable Station.

National Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance held on May 26 each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.

Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.

As with National Sorry Day, the NSDC works to support & encourage schools and community groups across the country each year to plan and hold their own Anniversary of the Apology events, whilst holding events itself normally in Canberra and Sydney.

As the first significant date of the year in the school calendar, the Anniversary of the Apology offers a positive and solid platform from which lessons regarding this difficult aspect of Australia’s history can be launched.

As part of its sesquicentenary. This church is the work of Edmund Blacket, whose architecture in our city, suburbs and country set much of the architectural character of its day. The first part of the celebration is an evening guided tour with the architect Hector Abrahams, who has published on Blacket and conserved his buildings. St Marys was a complete commission, for it included the design of the furniture and fittings, tiles, organ case and window glass. The tour includes special lights to illuminate the interior character of the church. The tour will address the character of the church in its time and its meaning as a place of public worship.

EXHIBITION/DISPLAY - Boats and boating have always been important to Balmain. The 1970s shores of Snails Bay and Birchgrove were lined with boat-related industries from Morrison and Sinclair, Nicholson Brothers Ferries, lighterages, medium and small boat builders. Many Balmain people caught the ferry to work and to town and spent the weekend sailing. EXHIBITION/DISPLAY - In 1916, a young man from Willoughby volunteered to serve on the battlefields of Northern France. Frank Channon enlisted as a gunner with a trench mortar battalion, often at the front line.

The exhibition focuses on one man’s journey from Willoughby to the battlefields of France and Belgium. Injured on the battlefields, he arrived home to play an active part in the Willoughby community and as alderman and was involved in the establishment the Garden of Remembrance. Frank brought back mementos from his experiences which include personal photographs, postcards, guidebooks and his diary all donated by his family.

North Sydney’s waterfront has long been an essential point of connection for north side settlers. Enterprising boatmen began rowing people and cargo across the harbour from the early 1800s, and by the mid-19th century boatsheds, workshops and wharves characterised the lower north shore. By the end of the 20th century, however, such industry had been largely displaced, as waterfront property came to be highly-prized for private residences and public space. This exhibition tells the story of North Sydney’s foreshore development, from a working waterfront, bustling with boatbuilders, coal lumpers, timber merchants and gas workers, to a residential and recreational harbourside.

Join us for the showing of this classic 1966 comedy, which tells the story of Nino Culotta, an Italian immigrant fresh off the boat. Nino attempts to understand and assimilate with working class Sydneysiders, overcoming difficulties of Australian slang and 1960s culture to find mateship – and love.

The afternoon will include a tour of the old Coal Loader bunkering facility, where passenger vessels were bunkered on arrival into Sydney Harbour for much of the 20th century. Refreshments provided.

Mary MacKillop Place Museum and the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph Archive hold rare examples of liturgical embroidery and outstanding examples of vestments made in France and brought to Australia. The exhibition shows examples of handwork created by the Sisters for the embellishment of the Chapel as an act of religious devotion. It is one of the very few surviving public buildings of its size dating from the early colonial period. Now fully restored as a public exhibition space and home for the Whitlam Institute, the building is open for the public to enjoy.

The choice is yours - you can simply wander and enjoy the building and exhibitions, or register for a tour of the Female Orphan School run by local company Past Time Tours. This tour will take you on a journey around this historic building as you explore the stories of some of the children who lived here.

WALKING TOUR - The Blue Gum Loop is an easy 3.5km (1.5 to 2 hrs) family oriented circuit walk that follows the majestic Williams River. The walk offers the chance to explore regenerating riverside forests, subtropical rainforest, massive Sydney blue gums, cascading creeks and peaceful river pools. Local volunteer guides will provide walkers with a unique experience, providing an explanation about features along the walk including local flora and fauna. A special feature of the April walks will be more detailed information about the history of the Upper Williams including stories about timber getters, sawmills, bushrangers, farmers and the iconic Barrington Guest House. EXHIBITION/DISPLAY - The White family were one of the leading pastoralist families in the Armidale area from the mid nineteenth century. Their homestead Saumarez is now a National Trust property. They had a significant involvement in many local organisations and institutions, from schools, to the university and fire brigade. This exhibition combines art works, photographs and objects that reflect the lives of the Whites and their relationship with Armidale and the local community. Materials in the exhibition are sourced from NERAM, Saumarez Homestead, UNE Heritage Centre and Regional Archives Booloominbah, Hunter River Lancers Museum and Armidale Folk Museum.

EXHIBITION/DISPLAY - Enjoy a visit to the Tenterfield School of Arts Museum and find something NEW: Portrait of Sir Henry Parkes, crafted onto a metal printer’s block for use in the production of unissued banknotes planned for issue in the 1950s.Also two unissued bank notes prepared in the 1950’s featuring Sir Henry Parkes (1815-1896). His portrait appeared later on the $5 polymer bank note issued to commemorate the Centenary of Federation in 2001.

The Douglas Vale Historic Vineyard is producing a limited release of wines from the original “Isabella” grape and other selected varieties. Tours and wine tasting are available on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

SELF GUIDED TOUR - In her life Miss Traill curated her treasures as a kind of lived-in Museum, honouring her maternal Kite and Lee ancestors, important early pastoralists of the Bathurst area The volunteer guides lead guests room to room. The house never had a formal front door, so important guests simply stepped onto the front verandah and straight through the French windows into the large drawing room. Each room is brimming with carefully displayed pieces ranging back to the beginning of Australian settlement. There are great stories in everything, from the simplest looking side table to the personal items on Ida’s dressing table.

The Scottish baronial mansion Abercrombie House resonates with local history and is one of Bathurst’s treasures. The smaller but no less significant Miss Traill’s House was built in 1845 and today provides an accurate record of the life of a pioneer family. Although Chifley Home where the former prime minister and his wife Elizabeth lived was built in the late 1800s it remains a time capsule of the 1940s. A Historic Homes Pass purchased from Bathurst Visitor Information Centre offers entry to these homes at a discounted rate.

OPEN DAY - “Burnima” homestead was completed in 1896, it is of a Gothic victorian style two story mansion, bus groups or individuals can book to have a guided tour through the homestead highlighting the working operations of the homestead and the ghost stories. The homestead retains some of the original furniture and photos. Visitors are encouraged to take a turn about the gardens and out buildings housing period horse drawn carriages and old farming implements, then relax in the gift shop/tea room which has a panoramic view of the valleys, hills and river. Visitors will take a journey back to 1890.

EXHIBITION/DISPLAY - In 1797 the ship “Sydney Cove” was wrecked on Preservation Island in Bass Strait.

Seventeen survivors took the ship’s longboat towards Sydney but this was also wrecked and the men cast ashore near Lakes Entrance. The men were forced to walk northwards along the coast in an endeavour to reach Sydney. Two months later, after enduring many hardships along the way, only 3 men arrived in Wattamolla Bay where a fishing boat took them to Sydney Cove. Two hundred years later this remarkable journey was reenacted by the Scouts. See whole story at the Old School Museum from 12 April.

WALKING TOUR - The walk from Mt York to Hartley, down part of the road constructed by William Cox and his band of convicts in 1814 -15, is one of the few remaining remnants of the original road, which has much to see to remind us of the brilliant job that was done. We are conducting this walk on two dates to enable all those who were disappointed last year due to the bushfires, to experience the walk. Amongst our attendees this year, are a group of 19 direct descendants of Cox himself.

EXHIBITION/DISPLAY - The display is in many rooms of the heritage sandstone railway station, which is still in use. Last year an area, with arresting graphic designs, was devoted to the story of the crossing of the Blue Mountains. The farming implements of the early settlers show the difficulty of those times. A kitchen room with utensils used in the last century is a nostalgic display for many people, as is the laundry and dairy section.

Some gowns from the mid C19 and later are on show with underwear, accessories and christening gowns. A display of colourful birds from New Guinea amazes all.

CELEBRATION/LAUNCH - The creation of a western road across the Blue Mountains as far as Bathurst was the work of two Hawkesbury neighbours, the surveyor George William Evans and the magistrate and entrepreneur William Cox. But the area around Windsor and Richmond also saw a significant interest in establishing a route north to the Hunter and this in turn was linked to the creation of Archibald Bell’s western Line of Road in 1823.

The lecture will relate the journeys of, in particular, Evans, Cox, Howe and Bell in relation to the expansion of Hawkesbury horizons in the decade after 1813.

A presentation telling the story of the town’s 35 volunteers who completed the arduous journey of marching to Sydney gathering recruits for WWI along the way. They arrived in Sydney greeted by thousands with Sydney town decorated for their arrival. The 1987 subsequent re-enactment march also drew huge crowds on their arrival in Sydney, and with the 100th Anniversary Commemoration Services in 2015 the planning for another re-enactment in March is well underway.

Until the first renactment march the Coo-ee Story was almost lost, but today our town benefits enormously from tourists who know us as the Coo-ee Town.

The 1926 Pontiac began its journey as a shiny new sedan, one of the first of a shiny new name and make. It came all the way from the USA to the dusty Far West of New South Wales. First as the family car of the Riches, then cut down to a work ute, it travelled thousands of Outback miles. Many years and much hard work later, it was retired. “The Old Ponty” was loved by four generations of the Riches family. Venetia Rowe, great-granddaughter of the original owner, donated the Pontiac (her childhood cubby house) to the Great Cobar Heritage Centre. Visitors to the Heritage Centre can see the Old Ponty with photos and stories of its fascinating life around Wanaaring, Wilcannia, Bourke, Cobar and beyond.

Australian Convict Sites inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2010

Isolated on this small Island in the South Pacific, the Kingston & Arthur’s Vale Historic Site is one of 11 historic sites that together form the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property. Visitors can admire the elegant Georgian buildings which contrast dramatically with the extensive remains of the prison complex, set in an idyllic landscape. K.A.V.H.A. is an outstanding example of a British convict system settlement. Norfolk Island’s fascinating history includes mysterious Polynesian seafarers, pioneering First Fleeter’s, victims and villains of the brutal Penal Settlement and the Pitcairners of ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’ fame.

Norfolk Island Museum reveals to you our island’s amazing, multi-layered stories. Located in four buildings in Kingston, we help you explore our turbulent past as well as today’s living culture. Walking (approx. 1 km) at a comfortable pace will be involved, including across grassed or unpaved areas. Limit of 30 adults.

This heritage-listed nursery was part of a larger nursery and arboretum comprising Weston park and Westbourne Woods. Join special tours through the nursery and enjoy displays, activities and refreshment in the park adjoining the nursery. For many Canberrans their first contact was through the Free Plant Issue Scheme, which began in 1930. This had the effect of controlling the species planted, resulting in a unified plant palette in the city and preserving the ‘Garden City’ concept.

WALKING TOUR - Established in 1962, the ANU Classics Museum is one of Canberra’s cultural gems. The collection spans the Mediterranean and beyond. The objects are beautifully displayed since the Museum’s refurbishment. They range from fine Roman glass tableware and jewellery, ancient pots dating back 5,000 years, beautiful glossy Greek vases, Greek coins from the time of Cleopatra and Roman coins depicting Julius Caesar, to domestic ware and interior decor from Pompeiian villas destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius. The tour of the Museum will be followed by afternoon tea.

Viewed in its present day context, as a cross-border precinct at the junction of the Molonglo and Queanbeyan Rivers, they provide insight into the transition between the region’s colonial and federal eras and the links between Canberra and Queanbeyan in that transition. Join Dr Karen Williams for the walk and a visit to the Robertsons’ House, the only known construction workers’ ‘humpy’ in the ACT, or just visit the Robertsons’ House.

They provided urgently needed accommodation for building workers and their families who came to get Canberra up and running in the post WWII days. It will include pre fabs in their original form or where redevelopment has preserved the outside form. The author of the book, Homes for the Workers - the History of the Narrabundah Pre Fabs, Alan Foskett, will lead the walk which will finish at a café at Narrabundah shops.

WALKING TOUR - Yankee Hat indigenous rock art site is located within the Gudgenby Valley of Namadgi National Park in a complex of boulders situated at the foot of Yankee Hat Mountain. Carbon dating of the campsite deposits in the Yankee Hat rock shelter show that Aboriginal people began using the shelter more than 800 years ago. However, evidence from nearby archaeological sites suggest that people were camping in the area, and presumably painting, as long as 3,700 years ago. Participants will meet at the Namadgi Visitors Centre where carpooling arrangements will be made for the drive to the commencement of the walk.

Advice will be taken from Park rangers if weather is inclement.
